Am I the only one who doesn't think the Doshi had anything to do with the child version? We only see her as a child after leaving the castle. Since we learned this episode that both partners have to consent I seriously doubt they were ever intending to keep her small.

there is a frame in the episode when she is explaining that she fled from horai with the doshi surrounding her as a child so I think yes they did. I will say tho its less disgusting to me since I dont think the doshi and the tensen really know morality when it comes to ages so they prolly dont think anything of it that shes a child. obviously its still horrible

Wow. This episode cleared up alot. The history, the means. and their objective.

My theory on why Mei is more moral, and also why Rien kept her alive is that she must be the more feminine representative and Rien the masculine. In certain types of paganism, wiccae, and animistic belief systems, we have the concept of divine masculine and divine feminine, where there has to be a balance of the 2 that goes beyond male and female. Feminine is what gives life, nurturing, and gentleness, while masculine is the war mongering, aggressive, and protective energy. (I say paganism, but actually most religions follow the core concept, like in Adam and Eve, or originally Lilith from Abrahamic/Christian beliefs) I think Rien and the Tensen needed Mei for their process more importantly than just "training," so they couldn't just kill her, and she is what is supposed to keep Rien balanced. Didn't Hoko say at some point that the whole island's energy/Tao was going haywire? I would hazard a guess that it's because Rien is making it go haywire by throwing off the balance of it all, starting with killing too many people, then imprisoning and disempowering Mei. I think they're supposed to work in tandem as like a mother and father to the other Tensen, not one dominating over the others. I mean, it's not exactly a wild guess, considering they demonstrate this a LOT through the show like with Gabi and Sagiri balancing each other, Nurugai and Tenza ect. I think they also show the reverse in Kunoichi-chica and glasses-Asaemon (brain ran out of RAM for names lol) where glasses is more feminine energy, being emotional and kind, gentle and idealistic, and kunoichi-chica being more practical, jaded, and aggressive (where she's more straightforward and blunt, and he's shy and passive) demonstrating that it's not just about gender and sex norms, but a more cosmic balance. So ya, I'm not exactly throwing out any new ideas, but just trying to organize the info we've been given as to why Mei is so important. Oh, and we also see it represented in father-daughter dynamics with Hoko and Mei, I almost forgot to add. So we're kinda seeing all the forms of this cosmic balance that points to what might be a solution or thematic ending to the story 🤔

Taoism (Daoism) is the governing philosophy of Hell's Paradise, as they explained last season. Maintaining a balance between opposing concepts is vital for using Tao, ying and yang, black and white, male and female, etc.
