There is definitely some complexity around the Fishman situation, maybe bookmark that for around 500 episodes or so XD

Oden

For me, this is the arc that made me fall in love with onepiece Such a good arc

The scene where Nami asks Luffy to help her is probably one of the most emotional scenes in anime for me, makes me cry every time. It also shows more of Luffy’s character. He doesn’t really care about anything going on on the island or that Nami told him to leave a couple of times already but as soon as she asked for his help, he didn’t hesitate for a moment. Even when arriving at Arlong Park, he still has no clue who Arlong even is, hence his question, “Which one of you is Arlong?!” after busting the wall. Regarding Zoro having a lot of cool/dramatic moments. There’s a running gag among fans that he’s the “secret” main character of the show because of that. His following is almost as big as Luffy’s.

Nami's breakdown is a perfect example of how much passion and emotion the japanese voice actors put into the voice acting. It sounds as if the voice actress put real emotions and pain from her own life into it. I had a theory I shared with the japanese girlfriend of my friend why that could be and she approved of it. In Japan they don't express their emotions in day to day life so freely like in Germany for example. Here it's normal when someone voices their anger in public for the train arriving late (happens A LOT). In Japan they seem to be more conformist and repress the direct expression of emotions, so that means that pressure builds up. Meaning when you have a build up of a lot of authentic emotions and finally get a space to express them, like voice acting, you put your heart into it, cause there's no other space to express them so freely!

Nami's voice actress has been killing it this whole arc. Luffy's behavior in this arc is quite interesting too, and it actually says a lot about his character. It goes against the norms where the hot-blooded protagonist would immediately help their friend, no questions asked, usually after being told about their sad past and the injustice they faced. However, Luffy doesn't care about the past or backstories. Which is why he disregarded hearing about Nami's. At first glance it seems callous but it makes sense when you consider Luffy's personality. Luffy's talent is recognizing good-hearted people. Once he confirms that he'll stand by your side no matter what. He knows their heart is pure. If that is the case, their backstory or past doesn't matter. He knows standing by those people is always the good path to take, hence the whys are not relevant to him. He trusts them, they're hurt, and they need his help. That's all he requires. The other norm that he goes against is that he doesn't help after Nami was being dismissive towards him. Not because he was slighted but because his philosophy is that he doesn't force or impose his will on good-hearted people. He won't help the unwilling. A big theme in another show (Monogatari) is that you're the only one who can save yourself, no one else can do it for you. The moment Nami makes her wishes clear and requests for help Luffy does it without a doubt in his mind. Nami: "You don't know anything!" Luffy: "No, I don't." (implied: What happened in the past doesn't matter to me. You're hurting right now.) Nami: "I already told you to go away!" Luffy: "Yeah, you did." (implied: The same way you have the right to refuse my help, I have the right to stay here for as long as I want. I know you're hurting, and I know you need help. I'll stay here so that you know I'm ready to help whenever.)

Seeing the scene with Luffy getting thrown into the water again made me realize that I can't take it seriously and the writing kinda pisses me off. Luffy could smash the stone walls with his bare fists and even put his feet into the ground, he even made that a powerful statement towards Arlong, but he can't punch the ground and get out?! I wish the author would have thought of something that makes more sense, it kinda seems stupid and not even in a Luffy kinda sense, it's not even following Luffy's logic. Like Luffy being all serious and breaking through a wall, declaring he's going to beat up Arlong and then the next moment he's like: "Oh, I can't, I'm stuck." I mean it's cool and it served the point Oda wanted to make that Luffy is saying he can't live without help but it should have been something where he really needed help, not just a forced circumstance for the plot to make a point the author had in mind. Does anybody else get that feeling?

btw its "gum-gum" not "rubber rubber"

I just wish Gen rallied the village to murder all of those weak marines before bothering with a crazy strong arlong. Sure it would make the setup for the final conflict a bit more iffy but they absolutely needed a killing. Also I've heard the sad OST/theme so many times at this point that its completely pavlovian. So unfair Post-edit: yeah.. Oda likes dishing out damage to absolutely everyone. Pretty much every major fighter is an absolute tank in this show so it'll take some getting used to with how much everyone gets to near death frequently

Not really no, mostly coz One Piece is not the most logical thing ever. Most mangas arn't, heck most fiction isn't. You'd see this in many places where something introduced earlier is woven into the show/book. I don't see it from a super analytical point, or let stuff like that bother me, it is a show were people have superpowers by eating a fruit after all. Not to mention, this was really early stages of the writing, and tho Luffy's character is not one that changes the most, you could see Oda's writing evolve, but even then you would see stuff specifically written to prove a point. There are things that do bother me about the writing of Luffy in very specific one liners but theres like 2 or 3 of those in the whole entirety of the show, but this is not one of them.

Nami getting the straw hat is so good. There’s been an ongoing theme of people’s treasures throughout this saga. It’s easy to assume Nami’s was actual treasure until we see how quickly she was willing to restart her 100 million collection. Her real treasure was her village. Luffy giving her the hat is an exchange of treasures: protect mine while I go protect yours.

Gsbr Hilm.

you guys should switch to one pace, they cut all the padding and filer of the show, they also sometimes do major art fixes, it will make the show more enjoyable and it wll save you time.

Derpin

Zoro is my personal favorite. He has so many cool moments.

Hi Wes and Steph, I loved the volume level of the last episode, it really felt more even with your voice level and wasn't too quiet or too loud. I would love if you guys could try a batch with the episodes at that volume level, as the sound for One Piece can be quite low comparatively. Don't know if anyone else agrees with me, but I wanted to let y'all know 😊 Unless that was just the mixing of that one episode 😅

R

also, yall may already know this but these eps are technically eps 36-41 in the og anime, since one pace is ahead so lower ep count. im sure it doesnt matter but it may be confusing to some seeing eps “28-31” and seeing the climax of arlong park instead of the end of baratie 😂

V

Been waiting for this episode, favorite from the arc (ep 28)

Renegade

I love how there's always a peanut gallery to go :O when the crew beats people up

100% agree. I just had this conversation with a friend the other day: A lot of protagonists, especially shounen protagonists, have a savior complex (as well as a martyr complex). They'll go out of their way to save you even if you don't ask... Especially if you don't ask. Possibly even at their own detriment. Luffy doesn't. There's probably a lot of apathy in there, but also it's about his trust in his friends. If you don't need/want his help, he's not going to force it on you. Tell him to sit out of a fight, he will. But ask him for help and he'll show up. And woe to those that made Luffy's friends ask for that help...

Michael H

Oh damn! Didn’t know that, thanks. I figured I’d wait till they finished Arlong Park to dive in so held off on watching lol

Please add this video to the one piece kollection ^^ I thought you skipped a few eps because it wasnt in there! :)
