(Go Go Gadget comment wall!) This is truly beautiful. A highlight of two of the three characters who repeatedly broke all limits of what these stories are and can be. I harped plenty before about how I thought of Mandy's past being a shadow of Vanessa's, and then once we actually saw Mandy's past, "how hers was a shadow of both Vanessa's and Alex's. Now they're finally facing each other for maybe the last time, and we can take it in. Obviously, there's nothing Vanessa can say that can make Mandy have a complete change of heart on the spot. The best she can do is point Mandy to the path of self-improvement instead of self-destruction and leave the rest to her and whoever might keep her on it. And Mandy looks like she knows that she suddenly doesn't know what to think of herself or her life or a lot of things. I still am, at best, guardedly optimistic of how accepting she is of Vanessa's words, even though it looks like they're getting to her. Vanessa just saw her memories, she has no idea what it's like to *be her*, and Mandy knows it. And yet, Vanessa is the only person who's ever seen the truth of her life, and still granted her mercy, even compassion, and still without the forgiveness that she hadn't earned. Even Dylan and Valerie quite likely never knew what their friend/girlfriend had been through, and both before and after she was found by her captors, she probably had plenty of reasons for wanting it that way and then keeping it that way. But hearing Vanessa say so many things I'd been thinking, in her own way, makes my heart overflow not just from enjoying the story so much, but from loving how everything went and how everything is turning out. About how Mandy is much stronger than she gives herself credit for after surviving all that she did and knowing that what "They" were forcing her to do was wrong and it wasn't who or what she wanted to be. About how the flower representing The Mandy Who Was may have wilted and a replanted seed won't be the same flower, in fact it might grow very differently despite coming from that flower, but it's not too late to grow it again. And that she never forgot about what Dylan and Valerie did for her, no matter how bad she got. And then I noticed, those flower petals in the air...they look...awfully familiar, don't they? Something I've found myself thinking about once in a while over the years that feels relevant to now (especially knowing Mandy's past): "You can stop being part of a mistake, starting right now." - Snake to Raiden, Metal Gear Solid 2 What happened to Mandy earlier in her life is going to be with her for the rest of her life. So is what she's done during the comic. Hopefully, so is this. For all the times that Mandy had control of her life wrongfully taken from her, everything that comes next is on her. What comes *after* that is probably going to be very hard, too. But where she goes from there...that's both on her and *up to her*. (If Mandy has anything to say back, and she asks Vanessa for one single extra favor, to tell Dylan and Valerie the truth for her since she won't be able to, I might cry again. Just maybe.)
