Happy Wednesday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed The Suicide Squad (2021). My girlfriend & I saw it in IMAX and we both liked it. This one is DEFINITELY my favorite of the two and my favorite aspects of this one are that it's R-Rated, it's directed by James Gunn, it's filmed in IMAX 1.90:1, and it has Sylvester Stallone as the voice of King Shark, especially when he says "Nom Nom". See you on Friday for your March Q&A.

Muuuuuuuuuch better. You gonna watch the 2022 HBO Peacemaker Series, based on John Cena's character of the same name, after this??? Or the animated series; Creature Commandos?? Both are part of James Gunn's new DC Movie cannon. They also continue THIS story... Both written and directed by Gunn as well, with help from Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and co. ... It's all the same actors from this movie reprising their roles going forwards too...Even in animated format... Oh; and nice glasses....

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 I 100% agree. This is my favorite of the "Suicide Squad" movies. Definitely looking forward to watching this one later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

This movie is what we call a spiritual sequel. Some of the characters that appeared in the first movie also have a role here, but you didn’t really need to watch the first one because this movie is kind of its’ own thing. James Gunn has a habit of hiring the same actors across various projects that he works on. For example, you probably wouldn’t recognize him without the blue makeup but Michael Rooker portrayed Yondu in the Guardians movies before portraying Savant. Also, Weasel was portrayed by James’ brother Sean who was also Kraglin. Funny enough in a similar sense, some of the actors who had a role here would go on to appear in the Holiday Special and Volume 3. James also has a habit of making people laugh and pulling at their heartstrings as he has previously proven. With that said, my favorite funny moment was Bloodsport yelling “it’s your mom!!!” Overall, Bloodsport is my favorite character in this film. Why wouldn’t he be? It’s Idris Elba. He was also Heimdall. This movie is the kickstarter to James’s Gunn’s new DC universe. It also paves the way to John Cena’s Peacemaker series. The first season is on HBO Max, and it’s only eight episodes long. The second season will premiere in August, but there’s also another series you would have to watch in between Peacemaker seasons 1 and 2. It’s an adult animated series called Creature Commandos, and the first season is only seven episodes long.

🐤👈🦈 **... bird...** Lol, I love this movie. 😄 P.S. And someone else said it in the comments, but I'll second it - I hope Addie watches Peacemaker later, it's such a good spin-off! (It's one of those shows that's waaaay better than it deserves to be on paper. 🙂)

Not “or”, AND. Peacemaker season 1 would be first. Creature Commandos takes place right after.

This movie made me feel like the new dc movie universe is gonna be in good hands with james Gunn, he unapologetically just loves the most comic book stuff and is able to make them into movies where i actually care about the characters

Doug

P.S. Since Addie wasn’t sure where Sean Gunn showed up as Calendar Man, he’s the guy with a tattoo of the month’s of the year around his bald head making fun of Polka Dot Man in prison. P.S. And yes, without going down the comic book rabbit hole, both Calendar Man and Polka Dot Man are actual villains from Batman comics. I’m pretty sure they also made cameos in the Lego Batman Movie alongside Condiment King and all the other goofy ones.

Loved this reaction and I really hope you'll decide to watch the Peacemaker show!

Oh, no! You didn't watch Birds Of Prey beforehand! I hope you at least watch it on your own offline; it's one of the best DC movies and is one of the few movies with a large, diverse cast women characters who kick ass and take charge, and who also are prtrayed realistically. And it's ridiculously fun and entertaining.

I think what makes this movie work more for me over the 2016 version is the R rating over PG-13. Although I liked both versions, I think this group of characters just excel in a more in a R rated movie compared to something like Superman.

Even if you don't watch it on the channel, Peacemaker is hilarious and full of heart just like this movie so you should enjoy it.

Doug

One main thing I think this movie does much better than the original Suicide Squad is "Showing, not Telling". The original Suicide Squad got bogged down in exposition for the first 30 minutes where they went through and talked about all the backgrounds of all the characters one by one, then talked about how the Squad would work, and so on. This Gunn version, though, gets right into the action right off the bat. It knows we don't need lengthy backstories on all these characters, even though most of them are brand new to the movie goer, instead it delivers a sense who they are in their core from their dialogs with each other and the action that follows. Who needs a 15 minute explanation of where King Shark came from exactly and what his powers exactly are? Everything we need to know about him as a character we learn from watching him do things like trying to read books and being confused over whether he should eat his friends, etc. 😄 So by the time The Suicide Squad does need to deliver some exposition, like what exactly Starro is or why the President dressed Harley up as a princess, it's already got us hooked enough to care. It's telling that The Suicide Squad is just slightly longer in length than the first movie (about ten minutes longer) but the first movie feels like it drags more. It really is a great of example of "Show, not Tell" in practice by comparison.

rely REALLY hope you go back and watch Birds of Prey. It takes place before this so it’d be out of order, but I think you’d REALLY love it. Especially after your reaction to the first Suicide Squad and how you felt about Harley and Joker.
