i played "guess what beverage is in these cute penguin bottles" with some people who hadnt seen the video and it was very funny, thank you

NIACO

i love the look of your room in these videos, the posters and prints on the walls are super striking. besides the ones that're framed, do you do anything to protect most of the items you hang on your wall? are they just taped up there?

LizardQueen 27

I'm curious what your process is when you find sources in another language. In the past I think you've said something about your dyslexia causing issues when reading Japanese text so I was wondering if you just try to brute force those texts with some tool or get help from someone you know who can read it.

DaphneBlue

Hi Hazel! Loved the video as always. Maybe you’ve been asked something like this before, but I’m genuinely wondering how you find all of the interesting and cool things you cover. You’ve talked before about being adept at using search engines to more efficiently and effectively find information. But how do you even catch wind of some of this stuff? A lot of the things I know about that I consider cool or niche or hip are either hand me downs from watching your videos, or being directly told about them some other way. You certainly give the impression, whether intentionally or not that you’re deep in the coal mines, hunting for this stuff. Sorry to talk your ear off! Hope you’re well!

After researching for this video, do you have a sense WHY the Japanese beer penguin mascots are... ostensibly American? "Mike" fights in a fictionalized Vietnam War and travels the American countryside seems like a strange stretch for a Japanese brand mascot! Also, I think only the black parts are their eyes; the girl penguins' eyelashes are only on the black dot even if they have the white face marking? Like that comic of Sonic taking off his goggles

Music gear questions: what kinda drum vsts do you use and what kinda settings do you like running on the line 6 pod (if you still use it)?

Been a Patron for a while but never asked a Q in these threads before. Have any kind of creepy, kind of questionable mascot characters besides Clo and the Penguins stolen your heart? I really appreciate this video for reexamining things about Shiawase Monogatari and the Penguins themselves which I took at face value. Like, “this was funded by Suntory, but where’s the Suntory beer? Huh, that’s kinda weird I guess.” And the aughts “penguin boom”—I have so many Zillenial friends whose favorite animals are/have once been penguins! It all makes sense now (Also, I want you to know how self-conscious and mortified I felt after you guesstimated a sizable chunk of the audience learned what a copywriter is at the age of 12 because of an obsession with the Mother games. I am in that sizable chunk)

sorry if this is a weird question, its probably google-able but i dont know how to word the search lol. basically i just wanted to know how u got the subtitle text in the video to have that "low quality"/pixilated look. i love emulating the vhs anime subtitles look but just putting yellow text with black boarder isn't enough and how u have it in the video is exactly how i like it. its probably just a font but if its not and there is a technique, that what i would like to know. ty

Hiya Hazel, I had been anticipating this one as I happened to ask about this film in a Q&A a while back, and heard that it was on the watch list for the Scarecrow streamathon. Sad to say I was stuck at work until after the viewing was long finished, so I had no idea how that played out. Impressive to see how circular the rabbit hole was this time around. Silly question, but what do you think Sonic's go to Pokemon team would be? Maybe just a hypothetical fave if a full team is too much thinkin' Cheers P.S. I am not responisible for Tom Green

Emily Loves Cookies

Hi Hazel! I couldn't help but notice the Kyoko Okazaki works on your shelf (I have a good eye for catching her stuff haha)! Her manga means a lot to me and this is just a simple silly question but what's your favorite work by her? Personally a big Helter Skelter fan. Great video btw!!!! :D

Quinn W

Heya Hazel! I just ordered up a Touched or been touched by tape and I was just curious if you have plans to release any physicals from your current project! I would love more Hazel drip if it were to drop. The video rocks btw! Cheers

SpaceCowboy

What’s the Christmas song you always dread hearing when December hits?

SoftGel

Hey Hazel, i imagine you get asked this almost every q&a so forgive the assumed redundancy but, what is your favorite part of the production process for your videos? It has always fascinated me how in depth you go with each niche piece of media you find, especially with this video in particular! (I was specifically amazed about how the Moscow Olympics played some type of role in this story)

Simon Gunther

How did you first get into alternative music? were you listening to third wave emo as a tween like a lot of us? are you and mae actually sisters?

BanichkaMen

During your research, which was the weirdest piece of penguin merchandise you found, both official and "bootleg", also out of all the copycat penguin mascots, which was the most scuffed?

NEKOPHILIA

Honestly my big question is how have accumulated just the amount of stuff to build your room and where

Chouinardigras

As a beer industry worker and a fan of Japanese beer, I thought the Japanese beer history in this was super interesting. Also, I love the Woodland Park Zoo footage! Did you go to WildLanterns? If so, what did you think? I thought it was a slight step down from last year, but still pretty cool. The sleeping bear was amazing, but the cactus man was so dumb. I guess that's what you get when half the show is presented by Taco Time lol. Thank you for another excellent video!

PlatonPizza3000

Hi Hazel! I've been wondering, where did your interest in TV ads come from ? Or rather, what do you find so special about them ? For me (outside of nostalgia), it's probably the time (and cultural) capsule aspect. It's funny thinking about living in a world sourrounded by a certain style of ads that you don't really see anymore.

mag

where do you get the energy to compile and go through a bunch of research readings for your videos? is this energy something you have to "cultivate" or does it just come to you?

ey3556

im sorry if youve awnsered this already, but im a huge fan of your music and im wondering whos the singer on endless summer malaise? i think her voice is just lovely and id like to hear other music shes sung on. ive looked a little, but i dont like digging through people's old tweets just to find one little peice of information.

P. Hotvedt

Hey hazel, lovely video. As a person old enough to be the target audience for a lot of those kids penguin movies in the mid 2000s, this was a really interesting video to me. I was curious to know how many of those silly DreamWorks penguin movies (Surf's Up, Happy Feet, etc.) you watched for the making of this video, if any, and your thoughts on them as a whole (especially the WWE-centric, Vince McMahon produced Surf's Up 2).

Mythic_Simian

Hi, Hazel. Long time listener first time caller. About halfway through the video I noticed the voice of Donkey Kong Streamer turned Illuminaughtii exposer, H Burger Guy. What's it like knowing that you've officially made it as a video essay person that collaborates with who I assume is the face of the genre? Also, I appreciate the collapsible list of sources. The plastic bottles of beer remind me of children's fruit drinks like Belly Washers. Super weird to me.

Felix Lundh

Hi Hazel, First of all, thank you so much for introducing me to some of my favorite anime over the years. Seriously, you're the best. My first, entirely selfish question: you mentioned having played some games on stream for this video. Do you plan on uploading the VODs? Just curious. The second, more important question: are you a fan of Penguin Café Orchestra? If no, what's your favorite bird-band (bands with birds in their title). Mine is Swans, because I like music that makes my skin crawl. Merry Christmas!

MasterShrub

In your interview with Natalie Marlin, you briefly talked about Kiki's Delivery Service. Did you seriously plagiarize letterboxd user nosebleedhaver? I'm going to go check every rateyourmusic review of Scatman's World now, swagjacker. thank you for one of my favorite albums this year and some of my favorite videos

leafbladie

Hey Hazel, just wanted to ask what you actually thought of Club Penguin if you ever played it. And what you think of the death of games that acted as social hubs for younger kids on the internet such as it?

Steve Ray

Howdy, Hazel! I think you've found the original mood that inspired Sofia Coppola's Lost In Translation (2003). Consider the parallels: a wistful couple appreciates each other as they explore a foreign country, though this time it's Americans seeing Japan, and they were brought together by a Suntory ad where Bill Murray wore a tuxedo, like a penguin at a piano. At the end of the hospital scene, Bill is holding a white owl plush in the same cute cartoon style, each of them a reflection of the mascot.

Suppp Apologies for how incredibly meandering the setup for this question will be but I remember in one of your videos thay you kept seeing hisashi eguchi pop up everywhere which got me thinking of sonny boy one of his more recent (i believe? Not sure what else hes worked on recently honestly it came out 3 years ago lmao) stints in character design. Love the anime for a whole lot of very personal reasons but one of the big things that stand out about it for me both then and now was its editing and how "sharp" it is for a lack of better word lmao. Has a strong tendency to hard cut, and linger on things that gives it a strong "thing i found out of nowhere in the middle of the night that Im scared will show something very fucked up out of nowhere" kinda of tension along with everything else going on with it. This along with watching the mononoke movie got me really thinking about editing in terms of anime/ animation generally. Are there any animated movies or shows that have particularly stand out editing. Feel like this particular part of animation gets talked of very little. Also thoughts on fan mvs for your songs? Hope your visit is nice!

Wu Wu Duck

Posted my question to the wrong thread so hear it is again 'Hi, I never really watch your videos only the q&a's and I don't understand the subject matter. I'm a chemistry student doing my masters in gene therapy and it totally burns me out but listening to you bounce ideas off a friend / cohost unscrambles my brain. Would you consider doing casual lets reads of manga with one of your friends? Thanks for the great content.'

Melanie Johnson

You pointed out that you were surprised that you had never been aware of Penguin's Memory until somewhat recently. How did you find it? Did someone recommend it to you? and what made it so interesting to you that you wanted to make a video about it pretty immediately rather than, say, something you've had in your mind for longer or media you're more familiar with? Maybe this question seems odd but as someone who has a similar type of patternistic way of thinking I'm interested to hear about the rabbit hole or discussion (if any) that led to you learning about and then obsessing over these funky little flightless birds.

Harpow

Since im sure you get asked this a a lot and have done it for almost every video you make, I still wanna know. What is the easiest and most optimized way to purchase and import the art works and trinkets from japan you demonstrate in the video? (Besides the caloriemate and other snacks since I know asian markets always have those for sale lol)

Zoe Eats Oatmeal

hi hazel hope you had a happy holidays (preempting that this QnA will probably be posted in january). What’s your favorite movie featuring snow? like any scene where it snows, anywhere, at any time. p.s. i hope the reuploading goes well the world needs to know about the beer penguins

Artfulorpheus

Hopefully I'm not too late and this hasn't been asked before, I checked through old Q&A's and didn't see it, but I may have missed it; Have you considered remaking or revisiting some of your old videos? The one of Stop! Hibari-Kun was genuinely important to myself and others in part for bringing awareness to the work, but moreso because of the discussion it sparked around transfeminine presentation and depictions within anime and the complexities of reading that across cultural, linguistic, and temporal boundaries. I just feel like especially in the current climate, that discussion is important but understandably difficult for a video these days too...

Jurei

I remember back during the scarecrow stream when I asked James Roach about raiding the stream, he mentioned you did some work for Homestuck at some point. How did that opportunity come around, what was it like, do you remember what it specifically was for?

oli_d

loved the video! What was it like interviewing oskar? I thought that was very sweet.

ItsRileyMe

A couple things, all unrelated to the subject, though I love those silly beer penguins and thought your take on the film drawing from the same sources as New Hollywood really interesting. I missed your POV on this, so, any albums, eps, or artists on your mind? Loved the recent music stuff out of you, geno, and ivy, all are regular listens for me. Is there any motion of that Pink Film idea? Id defo listen to something about that, despite being someone on the ace/aro spectrum. There is some much genuine heart in erotica that gets paved over, so hearing just about anything about anything unfamiliar to me would be awesome.

Mavish

Have you ever listened to Animal Collective, Hazel? (Others have already asked more interesting questions <3)

Jackson Brogan

really loved the new smiling broadly release! i'm not sure if this has been asked before, but how do you record your guitar? do you use a digital amp sim, or a physical cabinet with a mic setup?

martyb

The new album is excellent! On “close”: is the opening riff meant to be an homage to “God Knows” from Haruhi or am I hearing things? Regardless, does the “God Knows” sequence from Haruhi have any significance to you? (I get a huge dopamine hit whenever I hear it and I barely watched the show other than that scene)

Isra

hi! firstly i just wanted to say that i love the work that you do!! it's super inspiring to me as someone who is interested in a lot of the same areas. it's also really nice to see a fellow trans woman doing so well in this space - it means a lot to me and im sure others. onto the question: looking at your content i feel like broadly your content can be split into videos covering a wide amount of stuff relatively briefly and videos where you dig deep into a particular rabbit-hole. as a preliminary i would be interested if you see this as a valid distinction in your body of work (and if not if theres an alternate taxonomy you'd apply) and then secondly, given my or your taxonomy - what types of videos do you prefer to make?

Sophia

Hi Hazel! I love the video and especially the new album. I’ve been listening to it quite a bit! I am relatively new to the anime scene so I didn’t know who Haruhi was until your tokusatsu video. I was wondering did the research you did for that video inspire you to put the God Knows rift in? Does the research you do for videos frequently inspire your music? Or are they usually isolated from each other?

Josh Graham

Hi hazel! i was wondering what your research process looks like when you’re analyzing the cultural context of a piece of Japanese media. I recently read Pink by Kyoko Okazaki and was really interested in learning about its contemporaries and the general cultural vibe surrounding it but wasn’t sure where to start.

Tom

Wait, did anyone ask if you drank the beer? did you drink the beer?

Steve Ray

Howdy, Poppy! My unsolicited guess is that having Mike brutalize Southeast Asia and then contemplate his deeds and memories in America was a polite way to let the Japanese public contemplate their own deeds and actions in Southeast Asia -- whether performed by their leaders, their institutions, their families, or themselves -- without getting tangled up in controversial details and specifics.
