I think I speak for everyone when I say “we’ve missed you so much!!” And my question is, as per usual, Sonic related; have you seen Sonic Superstars and what do you think of the art style??

DaphneBlue

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Long time fan and lurker here, first time question asker. You mention in this video the idea that shorter runtimes in this medium mean you can pack more punch into the time you DO have, and i was wondering if you structured your script here intentionally in a similar way? I felt like I was absorbing a very dense amount of information, just to see that I was only 4 minutes in at the time. Love it! Thanks.

Creamer

yay, I love your videos so much. I was really noticing how your style has evolved. I’m wondering how you feel you’re creativity and inspiration has changed? after writing so much about media do you feel like you experience art differently?

BansheeNeet

Hi Hazel, excited to be able to be in one of these question threads after finally signing up for your Patreon a a couple weeks ago. My question is, how familiar are you with the band Shinsei Kamattechan? I really love their first two albums and would recommend them to anyone, and I wondering if you’ve already listened to them and if so what are your thoughts on them, positive or negative? Also the OP they did for the Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko is insanely good, one of my favorites of all time despite never watching the show because it looks mid. Love all your work, and thanks for all you do!

e u

My favorite tokusatsu girl was the one based off of the underground NY rapper big yokle. Why did you not include her?

Estrella Moon

Hi Alyssa and Hazel. I visited Seattle and forks earlier this year with my husband and we fell in love with the vibes of Washington. I am not sure if maybe the drastic change in scenery made me blind to bigger issues that I might have missed. Would you guys recommend someone move to Seattle? For reference we currently live in Iowa and have wanted out for a long time. This place sucks. - Much love John Deere girl

Rex

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Love your stuff!! As someone who does a lot of creation and consumption (of media and whatnot) online, do you have any tips on how to consume online/digital media in a way that is meaningful? I really want to get into and watch a lot of the things you talk about as well as a bunch of other stuff, but it can be kinda intimidating with just the sheer amount of time it’ll take and possibility take away with other activities, as well as the fear that it wont be worth the time spent consuming it, either the fear I’ll dislike it, or that it wont have any lasting impact on me. (Not really from a critical perspective but rather just a Stuff Enjoyer one haha) Sorry for the long paragraph and sorry if i sound condescending, wish you all the best!

Shout to Super Sentai's Miss America.

Hello Hazel and Alyssa, I just wanted to let hazel know that I’ve been going to Dennys every week ever since I tried it out after watching that video she made on Dennys in anime, I’m an absolute Dennys ghoul now Also I’m trying to learn guitar and it’s difficult

ItsRileyMe

Yo, yo! Since robo-girls were mentioned, it's my turn to proselytize All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku. I was wondering if you two have seen the original OVAs. If you haven't they're great! Got an empty headed big sister robot cat-girl, a deranged girl boss milf, and a set of Team Rocket coded, lesbain, office ladies. Nuku Nuku is designed with less than the minimum to look the part as a robot girl, but still good. Also, nice ham-ham sheets!

a bit of viscera

All the nods to films that appeared in Best of the Worst videos made me so happy and weirdly proud. Especially when you unironically used the “shoot the rodeo” term. Obviously I’ve gotta ask, what’s the best Best of the Worst feature film? (The correct answer is Stone Cold with Brian Bosworth).

newbanZo

My question was going to be what happened to NSFW boat, as I'd noticed it wasnt showing up in more recent stuff, but all is right with the world the boat is back baybeeeeeeee. Shout out to my brain for being unable to think of an interesting question about any topic at all, but spending many hours thinking about a 5 second boat gag

Rex

i’m also learning guitar!! you got this :D

Namo

Hi Hazel, I’ve always wondered how do you manage to do research on topics that require reading/understanding things in a different language? Do you use a translator?

Shane

Respecc to the unregistered Hazel cam going analog! I am a total know-nothing about A/V technology, and I was wondering how you put yourself on that old Panasonic TV. Did you video tape yourself first and then play the hard copy tape on a vhs player and then just dub the audio later on? P.S. the "I'm smoking my 'x' weed today" jokes forces me to ask: how much weed do ya'll smoke week by week? Not to make a competition out of it but I've been known to take mary jane to the smoke zone pretty frequently myself hugs and blunt puffs -Shane

Isla van der vliet

Hi! First question here haha. When discussing things for videos or maybe more when giving recommendations to others, how do you kind of factor in or address nostalgia? I always struggle with either kind of ignoring that aspect and overselling something or telling them too much about how nostalgia affects it and downplaying the work? (Also my names a bit tricky, it'd pronounced like the word Island without the nd)

scump smallbrain

Hi hazel what the Fuck is "Penis Busters 2" it returned literally zero results on google. Also seeing the robot cover band was a transcendent experience and I will never be able to thank you enough

PlatonPizza3000

Hey hazel, good to see you back glad you mentionned Talking Head, i've seen it in july and it's always a blast to see Shigeru Chiba's acting as a main character. I was pleasantly surprised that most actors in Oshii's early live action movies were VA in urusei yatsura (Talking Head even have future Luffy and Orochimaru VA) What do you think of these movies (Panzer cops etc...) and this very specific Oshii humor ? (haven't seen the fast food one btw) This mixture of absurd and loud humor and social satire seem to be present since UY but i don't see it being discussed very often. (PS : also glad you mentionned the cutie honey live action)

OmenMachine

Hi Hazel & Alyssa, You are tasked with character design for a new Eiyu Club film. What does your new gynoid girl look like?

E.J Smith

Hello! Though I guess this is regularly discussed on your channel, what is one of the funniest/most chaotic ways you tangentially discovered a piece of media? Also what are Wander's favorite toys? :3

Kai Vee

Hi Hazel! Just want to ask how you're doing? How is Seattle, how you holding up, you eating okay, etc. Gramma questions.

Marie Emari

Hi Hazel and Alyssa and Wander! Hope yall are handling the heat ok! All the footage from Mermaid in a Manhole reminded me I still gotta finish the rest of the Guinea Pig series, and maybe check out the American ones. What's your favorite Japanese horror movie?

Kitty ( The cursed existence of financial instability ) fo

Hello you both of you! I am elated to see a new video from you. Where would you recommend I look for these films? I know of a youtube channel but where else can I enjoy these films with ladies dressed up as robots? Also, where did you get the idea to film your talking head scenes on television? Is there an inspiration for it? Also : unrelated but after seeing all of the Channel Awesome movies, do you think they follow the same charm because they are so badly made or does the back story ruin it for you? I know that Spoony has done bad things and mistreated people but his acting in the first movie remains a rent-free moment in my brain and I missed you watching that one.

Kylee

if you had to choose just one, which of the films would you recommend someone dip into! this was such a fun video and i loved how much research you put into it. another 11/10 video

ItsJustMe

Hey there, first-time question-asker First off, the God Knows clip has left me both dazed and enamored, I absolutely adore it. In the realm of music and rabbit holes (but slightly off-topic), I saw that you were working on soundtracking. Has writing music for an ost sent you down a rabbit hole of analyzing how other composers write music for osts/listening to new music? In my own experience, I find that writing music for a piece of art that calls for something specific can sometimes be more difficult than pulling from current inspirations/personal emotions for your own music. Thank you :)

glaaassshaaark

Hello Hazel and Alyssa! I'm sure you must have already been asked some iteration of this question at some point already, but it's been on my mind a lot lately so I hope you don't mind answering it again. As a fairly new teacher I've found my free time rapidly diminishing, and it's left me reflecting on how I spend the time I have. I generally like to think of myself as someone who values a broad, varied media diet, and in the past I've made efforts to seek out new cool stuff on a semi-regular basis. However, as real life comes out of the woodwork to kick my teeth in, I find myself gravitating more and more toward comfort media, to a concerning degree. Recently I've been doing a lot of rewatching, replaying, and re-listening to stuff I already know I like, and generally only really seeking out new stuff from creators I already know I like. Genuinely new media just feels like way too much of a risk. If I put time and effort into scouting out something interesting and it sucks, I've wasted a night and possibly even some money as well. As a busy person who also takes a deliberate approach to media consumption, how do you balance the need to not let your interests stagnate with the need to ensure that whatever free time you have isn't wasted? Thanks, and btw this most recent video might be your best yet! Easily my favorite thing I've put in my head in the last 2 months at least.

KrasserBub

Heyo Hazel & Alyssa! Amazing video as always! I dont know if yall already did, but over the last videos i saw a few of Hazles tattoos in some Live Action bits, so i think it would be cool if yall could talk a bit about the tattoos you have and what they mean to you (if thats a comfortable topic of course) . I think tattoos are such a facinating art medium and its always so interesting to learn what made somebody want to have a particular design as a part of their body. Hope yall are having a great day :)

Soda Boi

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Another fantastic video, I love learning about niche sub-cultures within sub-cultures. My question is: do you know of any productions with the same style of low budget hero/action film but from north America? I agree that you can really feel the heart that goes into the work with low budget productions like this, and reminds me of MST3K and Mega64s DBZ in 5 minutes series

Bob in Hiding

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! I really liked the video, its always amazing to learn about a whole part of media I had no knowledge about. I just gotta know since you mentioned Megaman Battle Network, what is your favorite Battle Network game? And what would be your favorite Navi design? Thanks so much! Hope you have a great day and keep just making whatever you want to cause its always been great!

Vivifrombackhome

Hiya! I was wondering what mic you use and what helps you do the “YouTube voice” I’m working on a video rn and really struggling to get a conversational cadence. Also what toku monster is your fav thank you!!!

mag

Your videos are always so in-depth! How do you find/keep track of all your sources?

Zane

I could just imagine the look, sitting in front of the screen thinking "Whoa, that's rad, there has to be more" on this one. I'm placing a bet that Terriermon is #1, but other than that what do you think are some of the cutest/best anime mascot characters? (Can be from Games too, Alyssa's opinion is also super welcome if she'd like to say)

logan

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Not sure if this has been asked before, but I was wondering if you had any experience with the Archie Comics Sonic Comics and if so what your thoughts are? That universe holds a special skung-shaped place in my heart, it’s batshit insane.

Em

No question, just a thanks for plugging Scarecrow Video. I've never heard of them, and I'll be in Seattle soon. Need to check them out.

D3ZTRUCT0

Hey Hazel and Alyssa, hope you're doing well! A really well done video. With this video I thought it was cool you tried some new things and I was sort of wondering do you both have any big passion project you've always wanted to do? Like if you had an unlimited budget what would you make? A movie? Something music related? Also, related bonus question, what's your favorite artistic medium to work in? Best wishes to the both of you!

meggy

hi hazel, alyssa, and your beautiful baby boy, hope all of you are doing well, firstly loved the video, especially the david lynch joke, it’s my favorite joke of yours. i’m sure you’ve gotten this question before, but do you ever find something you would want to talk about but just can’t find ways to work it into a topic you can discuss? wishing only the best for you all, stay cool!

Kay Vekos

Stone Cold!! That's an all-timer. Surviving Edged Weapons might be my fav just because of the huge pop it got from the RLM boys

Kay Vekos

Hi Alyssa & Hazel, Is there an album cover or movie poster or any other media poster that you just hate looking at, including if you like the thing? Or has a title ever ruined a piece of media you might have otherwise liked or almost prevented you from engaging with it in the first place?

Elijah Sadiky

Hi Alyssa, Hazel, and Wander <3 I appreciated all the footage of wander in the last video, he's such a good cat. Anyways I was wondering if y'all had any thoughts on like good beginner VNs? I played through DDLC and had a fun time, but outside of that and like a bit of Fate/Stay night, which my friend got me to start, I have no idea what to look for I guess? Any suggestions would be appreciated at the very least. Also, second, unrelated question but did you guys ever end up reading more Homestuck? I'm a bit curious about Hazel's reaction towards some of the trolls and the things they get up to.

Seth Peacock

Stunning video as to be expected, and the Super Monkey Ball 2 Laundry Machine theme had me jumping up to go "that's it, that one of the under-sung GOATs of chill VGM!" Speaking of being pulled out of the immersion but appreciating the connection with the creators: Have you ever unexpectedly run into a creator of something you like and gotten a peek "behind the scenes?" Or just an interaction that you didn't expect? I was somewhat mortified upon asking in a discord for a way to speed up the text fade-in (which I called "unplayable") on a visual novel when the dev theirself PM'd me, noted we were both in the Ren'Py discord, and gave me a screenshot of the line of code to edit. Same for softlocking myself in the 'secret room' of The Longing after the full 400-day playtime and having the dev offer to take my save file and manually edit me out, so I could finish the game. I figure obscure-media-appreciators, but especially VN devs like Alyssa, might have similar stories.

Sawyer

hi alyssa and hazel! have either of you watched the 2007 ova ICE? i just finished watching it with my girlfriend as i'm typing this and i feel like i've been flashbanged by weird yuri and one of the central plot points being called the "twin tower"

GenerallyBananas

Absolutely nothing to do with the video, but since you've talked in the past about meals you lived off while strapped for cash, I wondered if you had any other recommendations for dirt cheap meals you hadn't already discussed

ollie

Hey alyssa and hazel! What a freakin vid. I feel lucky to be alive and in love with cool shit after watching your stuff. thank you for highlighting scarecrow video too. if theres anyone thats gotten me more excited about film its been you, and i hope i can check your curation over there someday. the battle network shoutout hit so hard too. that shit was ahead of its damn time. i love alternative representations of the internet. Kelly Kwang's issue of Frontier that youth in decline published is a personal fav in that area. I think youd like it! My question is, how did you learn to master your own music? Did you master this upcoming release as well? Cant wait to hear your new music!

Tom

What do you think would be the most interesting heroine tokusatsu to get ‘the power rangers treatment’ and are there any film makers or actors you would want to see involved in it? For anyone who doesn't know; Power Rangers was based on a tokusatu (the Super Sentai series Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger) that got 'adapted' for the states, where the non-costume scenes were reshot with American actors and other scenes were dubbed. The plots of the episodes were changed during adaptation. P.S. I'm going to ban Sam Raimi as a choice since he has basically already made a heroine tokusatsu with Xena: Warrior Princess

they should make larger fruits

i know sengoku turb has been shown/mentioned offhand a couple times on your channel, do you have any particular thoughts about it? ive been brute forcing my way through with an english guide, i think its a very interesting little anomaly and really love it

Andy Currie

I absolutely love when you show your shelves/organization/collections on video. Do you have any particular aesthetic inspiration for how it's all arranged? Any favorite curated collections online? I'm a fan of backlog_chan and backlog_kun on Instagram

Callum

Hello! I was wondering what some of your favourite shot on digital films are overall? And what are some of your favourites just for the way that they look (ie not great films as such, but are aesthetically great)? Side note: when writing this I googled the abbreviation SOD to see if anyone uses it to mean “shot on digital” and it turns out it is actually an abbreviated name of one of the largest Japanese porn companies. The more you know ✨ Thanks!

lastrealyearner

Hey y'all, loved the vid as always :3 ! I was happy to see that the tokusatsu scene was still alive since it feels like tight-knit communities like that are getting less common since the internet is making way more people more surface-level fans of more things. If you don't disagree with that do you think there is a strong future for more niche shit like this when it feels like fandom is getting more samey?

The Blue Quartz Dragon

Hi Wander! And Hazel plus Alyssa I guess. I don't have much to comment about the tokusatsu topic cause I'm not well versed in that. At all. But I did have a few questions, one about the music in a past video. In the return of Lucky Star video, there's this one song at the very end that's listed as ??? Is it an upcoming Hazel original? If so, I'm excited! The other question is what are y'all's thoughts on Made in Abyss. I love the art and world building (shout-out to my boy Kevin Penkin) but the author putting his own... Preferences makes me really uncomfortable. If you're not ok with answering that, then thoughts on cooking manga/anime? My favorites are Campfire Cooking and Dungeon Meshi (shout out to Girls' Last Tour for that potato scene) So sorry for the long question! Hope y'all have a good one

Ryland Austin

Hope y'all are well! Quick and hopefully easy question: What happened to the Grell video?

quantum.

hello hazel and alyssa! have you ever looked into tokusatsu outside of japan? one i am intensely familiar with is zaido: the space sheriff which briefly aired in the philippines around 2008 (i think it was an kind-of official spinoff of space sheriff shaider). i didn't realize how deep this rabbithole could go until i watched your video, and thank you for briefly reawakening my obsession over power rangers lol

Hymncat

As very online people (non pejorative), any advice on cultivating social media to make it not a miserable experience? I've found so many favorite pieces of media and artists through it but idk if the good outweighs the bad anymore.

Grandin

Hi Hazel and Alyssa!!! Your video on tokusatsu is finally what convinced me to be your patron; I'm a hardcore toku fan devoted even to local heroes so it was insane to see you point out a robot girl I recognize via retweets from a local hero I follow. (I'm also so glad you mentioned Hibiki cuz it's a very odd man out for Kamen Rider but so darling to me.) On that note, have you explored the local hero scene? I think it could be a really fun rabbit hole to fall down, because it still goes even deeper AND its very active.

h peets

hello hazel and alyssa! have you read any good books lately? i always love hearing your book recommendations

Sophia

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! I love the video like always. I love your section about Scarecrow! I used to live in Seattle and I loved going there with friends. I semi recently moved to Orange County, and I know it’s been a couple years since you guys have lived there, but is there anywhere like scarecrow down here? I miss being able to find anime dvds, or really any dvd, close to me. Where would you guys go for the anime dvd hookup down here?

Serswuu

Alyssa and Hazel! Long time listener, first time caller here, I was wondering if you both had any music playlists on either YouTube or Spotify you could share? I really dig the stuff you guys enjoy so either that or even just a list of recommendations from your tastebuds would be nice :]

Serswuu

Hi Alyssa and Hazel! I was rewatching the FLCL Q&A and was curious as to what Hazel meant by that podcast she was on being “gone”? I’d really like to find it to get more recommendations for music she likes so I’m wondering if it was archived anywhere, or if she meant it was completely scrubbed?

HazelYT

ill also answer in the q&a but i meant gone in the "absent from my current life" sense. theyre all still up and on the 2nd channel.

Wigglebutt

Ah okay! I’m not sure how I overlooked that but thank you for answering anyways :]

alice

hi hi,, lovely video as always! I'm just curious how you choose which songs to use for each video? cause I feel like they always fit the chill and cozy vibe of your videos so well, and I'm just wondering if you like put a lot of thought into that

Toby Ray Serrano

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! So cool you made a video about toku. Did either of you grow up watching Power Rangers? Also, do you have any interest in monster tokusatsu, like Godzilla?

sunfishdreamworld

hi hazel! hi alyssa! this is my first time ever subscribing to someone on patreon! i really loved the scarecrow segment in the tokusatsu girls video... i wish i had something even remotely similar near me, but i live in a small, rinky-dink town surrounded by other small towns surrounded by even more small towns... so i wanted to ask if you have any advice for finding online communities based around "niche" interests? is it something that you have to "trial-and-error" to figure out? i always daydream about watching weird anime and other stuff with people, but i feel like the internet is so big that i don't even know where i should look! sorry if it's weird for asking! another question i have is awhile ago in your weird game and anime fansites video, (i think) you mentioned coding your own site. is that something you continued doing? if so, how often? if not, was it something you found fun and would you do it again? i'm just curious since i keep picking up and dropping my own site. i don't know much and my progress has been really slow, but it's a lot of fun! i love sorting the sites on neocities by "old" "tagged: anime" and just scrolling through them... p.s., i've been watching your pangya streams for the first time, and i just got to the part when alyssa lost her progress on the agni face dress because of the server crashing... that was so devastating!!!

sunfishdreamworld

sorry for asking another question, i was just wondering if either of you have played or seen any of the mysims games? if not, i'm not sure if it's something that would interest you. i thought about some characters you might like! for alyssa, beebee is a character with pink hair and bunny ears! you might also like yuki (she refers to herself in the third person and bites people). for hazel, DJ candy runs her own nightclub and has a cute design! there's also makoto, who is secretly a robot girl, but everyone knows that she's a robot!

A General Mess

Not sure really whether this is the right place or question for this, but is there any chance, if I ask politely, that I could get that edit you have of David Cage's Angriest Dog In The World? Thanks for yer time if not!

Robert Brandin

Not a question but after spending an hour searching private trackers and getting ready to put out a bounty I randomly typed the correct thing into google to find the kind uploader who put Miracle Bunny on the internet archive just a few months ago: https://archive.org/details/miraclebunny

Elias Rosner

Hope I'm not too late! How was the filming for this video on that camcorder? Any particular challenges you didn't expect or was it similar enough to your usual setups?

Melissa

Not a question but I was inspired by your video to start translating some of the tokusatsu videos you mentioned into English, and it's been so fun! Thank you for introducing so many people to this incredible genre!
