Hello, Hazel. This [segment of time]'s video gave me a healthy dose of flashbacks of my obsession with the sketchbook style art of Pokemon. I didn't have a close relationship to my Japanese grandmother due to complicated family issues and looking back, the art style of the early settings gave me a look into what I imagined was "the old country" I wasn't given access to or info about. Personal comments aside, do you have a similar attachment to the music from the games or a connection to the music and aesthetic? Thanks for the hyperspecific trains of thought allowing my transfer to other hyperspecific trains of thought.

a bit of viscera

SoulSilver was the first video game I ever owned, alongside Platinum and New Super Mario Bros. I’ve never beat it, but I’ve tried to get through it at many points over my entire life. Recently, I beat this old, probably bootleg cartridge of Pokémon Gold, but for whatever reason, the game doesn’t save after beating the Elite Four, so I could never do the Kanto portion of the game. Oh well, may I please pet the cat? Also, I feel bad for bringing it up solely because the video was about Pokémon, but what’s the extent of your relationship with Shin Megami Tensei?

Vaalan Hei

are there any environments/areas/places you'd like to see rendered inside pokemon? or maybe even some that were already displayed in pokemon games but could have been done a lot better in another generation's style? Wonderful video that made me have a big smile on my face : )

DaphneBlue

Hello again you two! Hope you’re well! In a past q&a you mentioned that you guys have a “carnal” relationship with Taco Bell lmao. Maybe this has been asked already but is it too personal a question to ask what each of your orders are? As a fellow Black Bean Quesarito enjoyer I was heartbroken when they took it off the menu. Also, thanks Hazel for introducing me to Popcatcher. That record fucks so hard oh my god.

Nemesismess

Hey! I noticed you have some Japanese versions of some games. Is there a benefit for having both? Also shoutout to those Palm Pals you got, too cute.

Maverick

Hey Hazel/Alyssa/Wander, great video and congrats Hazel on the smiling broadly EP(the cover art also whips the film canister leg wrap is really cool)! First off, in relation to the game boy idling car moment, did either of you also imagine Sonic/shadow running along the highway when you were on long road trips? I was also curious if there were other snow locales/3D diorama locations that immediately jump to your mind in terms of spaces you feel you could just “live in”. I immediately think about the ps2 Katamari games, both the house you roll up in Damacy with the first appearance of lonely rolling star and the snow level in We Heart Katamari where you can just roll a snowball with no time limit that I often returned to whenever we had snow days. I think my greatest memories of Pokémon are held in gens IV and V. I’d grown up with the show (it was how I osmosed Hoenn having still never really played Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald), had a similar too young moment to remember playing GBC Silver outside of managing to raise a typhlosion that I used to one shot Lugia, but Platinum and Soul Silver live as my definitive first steps to being a fan of the franchise. The ability to actually go to Kanto blew my mind, it felt like returning to a hometown after moving somewhere else and realizing time still passed even if you weren’t there to internalize it, and Frosslass was also a staple in my teams going forward for both practicality and my first real appreciation of Pokémon designs outside of “looks cool/strong.” Also as a Brooklynite I have to shoutout Unova, the implementation of a soundtrack everywhere really blew my mind as I was exploring music through being in the school band and the decision to make you use all new Pokémon until post game was a great way to make the world feel like something wholly other and new. Hope y’all have a good one!

Hello! As a child left alone for far too long with a DS, I have my fair share of chilling spots in the sinnoh and unova regions. Mainly, the little isolated segment in the middle of the sinnoh underground where you can only get from celestic town, and the shaymin side route in victory road stand out the most, though. To give you a glimpse into my childhood mental insanity, I watched the two gen 4 pokemon movies, giratina and the sky warrior, and rise of darkrai, many many times. I checked them out from my local library, and would just watch them over and over again. I became particularly transfixed on the idea that if you completed some set of extremely arcane steps, you could go, in the video game, to alamos town, from the movie. I have no idea where I got this idea in my head from, but I spent a very long time both in and out of bounds with an action replay trying to solve a completely fabricated puzzle (I also played the platinum in a weird way where I would repeatedly beat then reset my save, and then just play the game again. Everytime I would catch a pokemon I had already used on a previous playthrough, I would name it nickname and then its generation. I used a crowbat almost every playthrough, each time raising the number by one. The last one was named CrowbarXVI, to indicate it was the twenty sixth playthough I had used a crowbat named crowbar. Yes I played platinum around 30 times, I was a weird, lonely child.) Likewise, there's a scene on a train in the shaymin movie that I was also very certain I could somehow access. I rewatched the second of these, Giratina and the Sky Warrior, like, two years ago to see how it held up. It was predictably sort of grating, but the locales stood out in it as very familiar. I feel like there's always been something kind of stand out strange about the pokemon movies, how they are very polished, but to me always felt really separate from western animation, giving them a unique feeling. Rise of darkrai's setting is really bizarre, being this whole pathologic-clockwork german spire city that felt so strange and out of place. They're weird movies. Sorry for the essay, actual question, now. What are your top 5 (or just general favorite) fool's gold pokemon?

Booger

If you could choose between having a pokemon of your choice be real and also your pet/friend, OR bringing an actual pet of yours from the past back to life, which would you pick? (I just came up with this hypothetical and now I'm having an existential crisis realizing that all of the pokemon I like are jerks that would make horrible pets)

SkiddyBones

love the new video, I also love the gen 2 Sugimori art. Gen 2 is just the best, best remakes, best manga arc (although my teenage brain loved the gen 3 love story) and best music. My favorite spot in HeartGold is the National Park. I played the mini games in that area so much as a kid. For my question, what’s the ideal Custom first route Pokémon lineup for you? 3-4 Pokémon that could appear in the first route of the game, usually with one flying type and one normal type.

ItsJustMe

Hey there :), I find it compelling that even though I have primarily experienced Pokemon through my periphery (picking quite a few up games and getting distracted mid-way through, similar to your experience in the video), it has regardless created meaningful moments throughout my life. One moment in particular was when I was briefly enrolled in a Catholic school and I had initially felt completely foreign to that environment. However, Pokemon card collecting acted as the medium in which I began to connect with those around me. Its subsequent banning, although heartbreaking, only served to further those bonds due to our collective angst. It's acted as a significant way to connect with others, even though I haven't fully completed a game. Are there any other series that you have experienced primarily through your periphery that have nonetheless created lasting impacts on you?

Shellsews

Hi! Wonderful video, your videos are always an inspiration, I keep telling myself I'll start making videos about video games and the connections I feel to them, do you have any advice for getting over that mental block and just start creating? Another question is which city/town in pokemon would you want to live in?

ItsRileyMe

Not a q, but the mention of Hollywood Video reminded me of how my sister and I regularly stopped by to rent the same copy of Battle Revolution. When the place went out of business, we stopped by the clearance sale, but missed snagging that copy. Tho, we did get the copy of Klonoa for the Wii we never finished. My sister later mailed it to the Game Grumps for them to never play

Soda Boi

Hello Hazel and Alyssa! First off I wanna say, as someone who grew up in southwest America, I completely agree that snow always felt this magical and faraway scenery that I would never get to experience because I live in the dessert, so experiencing it through games and shows was always euphoric. Question: After modding my 3DS last week, I finally started my journey of playing all the mainline Pokemon games I never played. What would you say I can and can not look forward to as I play through them. I've started Crystal already. And quick side question: What model cameras were you showing off in your bag? Great job on the new EP btw! I love it!

Alexandria Cina-Bernard

Hello! I love the video and your new music! A few years back I got Pokemon silver and blue from a local half price books, and of course the batteries were dead. I ended up de-soldering the batteries and soldering in some new ones, and I also fixed my friends copy of Pokemon red too. Have you considered replacing the batteries of your Gameboy pokemon games? Its fine if you don't have the time, energy, or desire to do that repair, but I thought it was pretty fun to do myself 🙂

Tom

Hey, sorry to hear that you are having trouble sleeping but have you tried the new Pokemon Sleep app? https://www.pokemon.com/us/app/pokemon-sleep/ A few years ago I did a software testing contract for tPCI. And there is some wild stuff on that pokemon.com. I was probably the least poké-pilled of the bunch; but it was my crash course into everything Pokémon and pokemon.com became a favorite Pokémon place for me personally (and I had a great time working that contract). If you dig around on the site you can definitely find some fun Pokémon ephemera. (and you can watch the first 4 seasons of Pokémon). P.S. Be on the look out for Pokémon themed stencils for Halloween pumpkin carving (I hope they are still doing those).

Malachy

This was lovely, bought the Scarlet DLC after because I can't wait to hang out in a little japanese countryside on my dinobike buddy. My Question real quick though have you watched any of the anime outside of when you were a kid? Will always prosthelytize Sun and Moon more than the game it made me fall in love with Alohla, one of my favourite slice of life anime up there with Non Non Biyori.

Vivifrombackhome

Hiya! Great video as always. I have also been going through soulsilver again and I was able to import a pokewalker from kanagawa which made me feel pretty cool plus it came with Pokémon stationary, very cute. Anyway I was wondering which player character trainer has your favourite design and which npc trainer is your fav. (Hope the wordings Ok on this) Thank you! And Alyssa’s Rika photo collection is so real

KrasserBub

Hey yall, loved the Video! Since youre maybe planning on doing a sequel of this video, did you or are you planning to play the Pokemon Ranger Games? They have such a cozy vibe, trails of light especcially. Take care :)

Turbo Queer

this is a definite favorite of mine. I screamed in joy at the rustboro music in the beginning! I feel so called out with this video. great job! It's an amazing video

Isla van der vliet

Hi there! Interesting video, and loved all the mae shoutouts as a fan of hers too haha. The question is, (for either of you) what counts are some guilty pleasures for you in media? And what sets it apart from other things you like that makes it "guilty"? Thanks again for the vid and hope you have a lovely day

PlatonPizza3000

Random question but have you ever seen Nobuhiko Obayashi's movies ? I adore "The little girl who conquered time" there's so much to love in it and i'm impatient to watch hausu wich came to cinema in france recently but...only in Paris so

Shane

Question for any/all. I always appreciate the anti-cop jabs y'all make in your streams and the occasional commentary on life under capitalism being shitty. Without prying too much, what radicalized/ shaped your perspective?

Mark Mazuelos

Hi names Mark! And I have to thank you Hazel for reactivating my Pokémon neurons, really needed this video after some tough stuffthis weekl. Also, loved that you and Mae had fun playing a bit of Pokémon fools gold on my little shitty Vizio fridge tv! I guess my question is, back when you played pokemon gold/silver/crystal yadayadayada, what team of pokemon do you always find yourself unconsciously putting together through all of your playthroughs? Jumpluff is as precious to me as mareep is to you, got the plushie to prove it.

Kai Vee

Loved the video, it was great to hear so many warm memories of Pokémon. I have so many too, it reminded me of many of them. You touched on places in this video obvs, but do you have any favorite characters? I wouldn't say characters are strong parts of the games, but any that have stood out to you, even just design wise?

Ivan Batchelor

As someone who's currently trying to complete the gen II pokedex on my battery-replaced carts, I enjoyed this a lot, as Kanto and Johto were where I spent much of my childhood. What's your favourite music from the series? (I did sing along to the Ecruteak theme when that popped up...)

Kitty ( The cursed existence of financial instability ) fo

Hello Hazel and Alyssa. Say thanks to Mae for watching the channel awesome movies on stream, it was good nostalgia . As someone who has never played a pokemon game but would like to ,which game would you recommend that i play? Did you ever watch the og anime that played on 4kids?

Kyle J Javelli

Great video, loved how breezy and personal it was. My personal favorite poke-spot is Ecruteak City because it reminds me of taking the ferry to some of the outlying islands near Seattle. My question is this: Your video got me thinking about how games use nostalgia to enhance their themes and gameplay. Not just retro throwbacks but things like feeling homesick in Earthbound, the tutorial in Kingdom Hearts 2, the calm upshifted remix of older music in Pokemon Gold and Silver, etc. What are some examples that stand out to you and what do video games do as a medium that make them better suited at making you feel nostalgic?

Riley

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Just moved away to university and while I wait for my classes to begin I‘ve been finding lots of time in the day to just relax and watch your vids while doing some menial tasks. You’re picks for the gen 3 and gen 4 games especially were super awesome and I’d go as far as to say that route 113 from the gen 3 games is my fav if not second fav route in the entire series of mainline Pokémon games (route 120 also freaking rules. I love absol.). Was wondering if either of you have had any experience with the Pokemon ranger series of games? Although my memory may be lacking I feel like a lot of the spaces in that series feel really fleshed out for what was really just kind of a DS offshoot of a series. Also, smiling broadly EP wwas so so awesome and I’m real excited for more music under that alias in the future!

Deso's Prophet

This video was pretty fun. My first pokemon game was also emerald, and I still to this day haven't beaten it, even though I have the still functioning original cartridge and an analogue pocket. My question is if you've played any other GBA games and if so, what are a few of your favorites?

Fickle Harpy

You inspired me to replace the batteries in my two Pokéwalkers! I bought Heart Gold on release day in Japan (because it was released on my birthday.) Great video! I had no idea about all the bizarre bootleg games.

Hymncat

Despite not having any nostalgic connection to the games, the town built on a bridge with NPCs adding instruments to the music in bw2 was so heartwarming to me, especially under the bridge. Most of my own personal smoke spots are just places I've found wandering around the places I've lived- a secluded patio with a sundial at the center, interesting and inexplicable architecture, a forest path leading to a tunnel covered in graffiti, etc. Without doxxing yourself, what are some of you favorite real life smoke spots?

InariSu_

My first experience with Pokemon was when I was 13 some kid on a school bus showed me that you could emulate GBA games on your iPhone (RIP GBA4iOS) and I was able to play Emerald. Since that day on, I've been pretty obsessed with the entire series. I was wondering which Pokemon game/generation has your favorite soundtrack? I really love the music in the Sinnoh games

Ryan Gatts

your video reminded me that in Y I had preset outfits that I would wear in different towns to match the weather or vibe better! did/do you do anything like that?

Sophia

Hazel!!! I need to tell you how obsessed I am with Smiling Broadly, It’s literally all I’ve been listening to since it came out. I love it so so so so much. I also loved the video! It was so chill and made me think a lot about my favorite hang out places in video games as a kid. Anyway, My question is if Wander was a pokemon what moves would he have?

Marie Emari

Hi Alyssa and Hazel! I absolutely *loved* this video, as someone who would spend tons of time just sorta hanging out in Eterna Forest. The airy flutes and low bass, the way the light shines through the dense canopy, and the little text when you look at the mossy rock, its all so good! When it comes to other games, are there any that come close to having cool spots to chill in, and if so what are your favorite smoke spots in other games?

Melonenstrauch

Hiii Hazel and Alyssa! After lurking for months I finally found a question to ask: Hazel, the background music you use in your videos has repeatedly confirmed your objectively good music taste (Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, Evergrace) and since this video was about video games, what is your favourite game soundtrack made after 2010? Curious about yours too Alyssa! Also I just wanted to say thank you because your video about weird 80's OVAs is what really got me into anime!

logan

Hi Hazel, hi Alyssa! As a fellow roof person I was wondering if you have a particular roof or roof memory that would stick out as a favorite?

bathestyles

Hello! Just wanted to pop in and say I was cackling at the part with all the Rika screenshots.

DaphneBlue

I know asking a second question is bad form but I felt bad asking one that wasn’t even related at all. I’m not the hugest Pokémon fan but I really did enjoy this video. Collaborating with Mae and Thor on this video really made it feel like the labor of love it probably was! Anyway what are your thoughts on Clobbopus? That’s my favorite gen 8 Pokémon.

arseholetep the insufferable

Excellent video as always, I was wondering if there are any videos you'd consider revisiting/ making follow-ups to?

actually a dawg

This is totally off topic and feel free to skip it, but thru a serious of fortunate happenstances and hard work I've amassed a small budget to convert my bands practice space into a diy studio. As someone with a good deal of recording experience was there anything you wished you had really splurged for or gotten the cheapest version of? Or more generally advice you could give for creating a good environment for recording music? Thanks yall

LittenNuggets

Great video as usual, back when Gen 5 came out I used to just chill on Route 10 just to vibe to the music, and when I was really young I used to hang around Ecruteak city, especially at night, just because I love the town and the music. My question is what's your favorite of the Pokemon movies? I am a big Gen 2 fan and I used to bug the hell out of my parents by playing Pokemon the Movie 2000 non-stop. Keep up the great work!

Wabba

Great video! Got a bit of a weird question perhaps, at some point in the Channel Awesome movie stream, you mentioned Horseshoe Finale and its relation to "an obscure podcast", or something like that, don't remember clearly, just want to know, were you talking about the PCP? God I miss those guys.

Seth Peacock

The little Poké Bean islands from son and moon have my heart. There's a lot of little micro-games in Pokemon but that sending my mons out to collect beans felt especially good.

HazelYT

i think if i brought up a podcast it was just me saying i heard about it years after it happened from a podcast mentioning it offhand. its the only video by the guy i've ever seen and its certainly all i feel i need, haha.

Sean Kirkpatrick

My pokémon experience is somewhat limited- I grew up in a family skeptical of video games and I dont think I ever got into the show- I did inexplicably have one of the movies on vhs maybe the 1st one but not sure. This was a chill look into a world I’d like to visit at some point as I fill gaps in my anime knowledge! My question is not related to pokémon (if that’s okay, if not no worries)- I could be misremembering, but I think I heard you refer to gay subtext in From Up in Poppy Hill? Was it maybe a vibe between two of the women boarding in the house? Am I remembering the wrong ghibli film? It’s one of my favorites- it really conveys nostalgia for its time and place in a remarkable way and the story is sweet. Thanks for so many cool insights on the animanga world!

The Blue Quartz Dragon

Hi Alyssa and Hazel! How's Wander? Anyways, I now understand what you meant by "Absolblogspokemon" style video with this one. Going on a trip way over somewhere, having a wide shot of an open area with 3d or 2d sprites wandering through it, recording without a capture card, THE TV BIT?? Immaculate precision to his style. Stunning video. Also new your new album. Probably some of my favorite songs ever! Anyways! I'm shocked you didn't mention the massive amount of snowy towns and routes in Pokemon. I find them all to be extremely cozy (even if there's a strong Pokemon about to trample me)! Personally my favorite is Circhester. The music is just delicious to pause the game on and have it in the background. That or the new snow town where the ghost/dark type gym leader is in Scarlet/Violet. I actually was able to catch a diamond dust one day!

they should make larger fruits

hi hazel! do you have any general tips for someone trying to compose more dense songs? after i lay down chords + melody + drums i struggle to come up with more variation and layers. love this video by the way, one of my favorites yet!

E.J Smith

Hi Hazel! I noticed in your video for a moment that you have a cow Palm Pal!! I have a strawberry cow, as well as the alien and the axolotl and I can't get over how cute they are! My silly little question is do you have any other Palm Pals (or perhaps other stuffed animal friends) that you're thinking of buying? A more noteworthy question I also have is how do you get media footage for videos? I usually copy the link from YouTube and put it in a website that converts it into an MP4 - I also have been recording my screen using OBS. Is there any way you do it that's perhaps more time effective, or is this pretty much how one goes about this? Anyway, love your videos as always, and I hope you're doing well! 🤗💖💕

sunfishdreamworld

hi again alyssa and hazel! it's been a couple of weeks since i last watched the recent pokemon video, but i remember having a lot of thoughts while watching it. i've never really played any pokemon games before or watched the anime, but i always found it fascinating how HUGE the series was! even in my extremely small school, a lot of kids (who also probably didn't watch the anime or play the games, at least to an extreme extent) would spend recess trading or playing with the cards and talk about their favorite pokemon. i remember i had a friend that had (most likely) bootleg toys of some of the pokemon, including a celebi one that he gave me and i cherished. i don't think i'll ever get *into* pokemon, but it's just really cool how it's always *there* if that makes sense. i also wanted to say to hazel (since i forgot to mention it in the last q&a) that i LOVE your strobe light tattoo! i also love how you use the song in the background for some of your videos. that song really means a lot to me, and the music video is really charming too. i'm really indecisive about tattoos, so i was wondering if it was easy or hard for you to decide on your strobe light tattoo? hope you two are doing well! P.S., i wasn't sure if it was intentional or not, but the latest pokemon video felt very "personal" to me in a way with how hazel included certain videos/pictures. i really liked it! there was something about how you put that video together that made me feel kind of nostalgic

Juan

In a hypothetical Hazel "What's in my Bag" episode, what would be some "expected" and unexpected record picks?

Elias Rosner

Oh God. Pokémon channel! I played that game so much but never seemed to figure out how to "finish" it. Wild. On PC, do you think it scratched the GameCube era itch for that Stardew-esque not quite Animal Crossing cozy feel?

lizzygirl

what music should i play at the cafe i work at to impress/frighten my rather pretentious coworkers

Pixelklubben 64

Hazel, your videos are amazing! I've seen all the ones on Youtube around 4 times each now I think! Questions: So what instruments do you play and the cassettes that you make, are you the writer of those songs? Where do you fin the Japanese singers?

martyb

Smiling Broadly is rad! I’d been enjoying Touched and Connections and Feelings, super happy there’s more coming. Loving all the different guitar textures and chunky bass. Is twitter the only place to go for music updates if they’re not mentioned in a video (which is how i found Smiling Broadly)? I ask because I don’t have twitter and definitely want to stay up to date with musical developments.

Potion Yeller

Been listening to smiling broadly on repeat for the past couple of weeks, puke (106% true speed) is really really good, and I like the musical homage to BP/Coaltar in patterns of behavior, shit rocks. I was wondering what kinda thought process it takes to make lyrics that you like. I've tried to write lyrics and most of the time it feels like inauthentic flowery language or emotionally stunted nonsense. Thank you.

ollie

Hey Hazel & Alyssa y Wander! The shots in this video were so entertaining. All the color palettes and shot framings of your dee-esses just idling blended so well with the in-game footage of the background just vibing. The music choices were choice as hell - as well. This is probably my favorite, im gonna say the word, c o z y video youve made yet. Thank you so so much for all the work you put into these vids. They make me so happy. My questions kind of a boring one. How do you store and recall all the footage, music, memage, and media you hang on to and use? A huge ass NAS? Big ol cloud? In whispers to wander? Anyway, thanks again and have a great day.
