Jedi Mandalore (Dylan)

This film is an Elseworld story which means it's set outside of the mainline DC continuity just like The Batman (2022) for example. This is a whole new Joker with no connection to any past Jokers from movies or shows. James Gunn with his new DCEU as dubbed any film that's set outside of his connected universe as "Elseworld" stories just like the comics. Think of it as alternate Earths with their own history. Jokers Has a Name? So Arthur Fleck name was chosen for a few reasons. "Arthur" was chosen for its regal connotations, as in King Arthur. Arthur harbors some delusions of grandeur and he may or may not be the son of Thomas Wayne, who is Gotham royalty. While "Fleck" was chosen for its lack of significance, as in a "fleck of dust. In the comics Joker has never been called Arthur Fleck the name was created by the director and is a creation of this film. As the Joker is Adapted as an unknown child in this film he could've ended up with any name so it left the door open. In the comics Jokers name has never been revealed but in many renditions such as Batman 89, DC Animated Universe and the alternate timeline of Batman White Knight he has used the name "Jack Napier" but for DC Animated Universe and White Knight along with other media its' not confirmed if this is his actual name. film is very much the idea that anyone could be the Joker with many people theorising that there could be more than one Joker like the Three Joker comic series. I do like the idea that this Joker existed before Batman so in theory if they ever wanted to do this the Bruce Wayne we see in this film could grow up and become Batman only to face a new person who becomes the Joker inspired by the actions of Arthur in this film. My personal favourite Joker is Mark Hamill from the DC Animated Universe and Arkham video games. Jokers Origins: So Joker has had many origins in the comics from being a a man who was involved in a crime in a chemical plant, falls into one of the tanks, and comes out a crazed psychopath to being a failed stand up comedian and family man. Even the Joker himself isn't sure of his actual origins after years of madness he's forgotten which stories were real. This film goes the failed comedian route. What Inspired the Movie: This film is heavily inspired by Batman: The Killing Joke which depicts the Joker as a failed stand-up comedian similar to what we see in this film. The talk show scene seems to be inspired by a scene in The Dark Knight Returns. This film is also heavily inspired by movies like Taxi Driver but more so The King of Comedy starring Robert De Niro who plays Murray in this film. Gotham City: Gotham City is very much inspired by New York City in the 1980s set within the transition period from the late 70s to the early 80s which is why the film looks much more like a 1970s film. It was filmed in Jersey City and is an alright depiction of the city. I prefer it to The Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises but that's not much as those two movies featured a pretty uninteresting Gotham that looked more like Chicago and New York City rather than Gotham City . But nontheless cinematography, colour grading, and overall atmosphere made up for a more tame Gotham along with the 1981 setting. Can't wait till you watch The Batman that movie does justice to Gotham City. Other Great Batman Live Action movies: The Batman (Matt Reeves Universe) - Favourite Modern Batman Batman 89 (Tim Burton Universe) - Best Gotham, Iconic Danny Elfman Music, and aesthetic Batman Returns (Tim Burton Universe) - Amazing Sequel very Tim Burton Batman VS Superman - I guess this counts as a Batman movie. DCEU Batman does not have a stand alone movie. Animated Movies: Mask of the Phantasm (DCAU) - Favourite Batman movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker (DCAU) - Amazing unique setting that you'll love Batman: Under the Red Hood (Comic Adaptation) - Great movie The Dark Knight Returns Part 1 & 2 (Comic Adaptation) - Favourite Adaptation These last two are movies based on the comic books of the same name. While Mask of the Phantasm and Return of the Joker are both set in the DC Animated Universe the universe of Batman Animated Series, Superman Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice league, Static Shock etc. A bunch of amazing 1990s to 2000s cartoons that were set in the same universe. I'm pretty sure the cartoon you mentioned is most likely one of these shows I've mentioned which featured Mark Hamill as the Joker.

It's ok to laugh. You need it watching this movie. Saw this in the theater, it was quiet through the whole movie. This is the 2nd time I've seen it. Beautiful reaction.

I think for the purpose of telling this origin story, Penny did adopt Arthur but not sure if the comics have this particular story line as well. Most of the movies with the joker have different origins stories.

Joaquin Phoenix did win an Oscar for this role as the joker. For best actor.

Heath Ledger's joker is still my favorite. But this movie and Joaquin Phoenix is really incredible.

Still hard to believe that the director of The Hangover also directed this movie. A career-defining performance by Joaquin Phoenix who rightfully deserved every single Best Actor award for that awesome performance. I really enjoyed watching this movie again with u its so good. Heath Ledger is my favorite Joker but this is a close second.

I really like how much empathy you have. and it makes for some great movie reactions

Heath Ledger is the best joker imo. But Jarred Leto did try getting into character by sending Margot Roby a dead rat so idk thats pretty out there.
