THE DARK KNIGHT (2008) FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION - WATCH ALONG

Comments

Ryan Liechty

OMG easily one of the best and my favorite superhero films ever with a legendary performance from Heath Ledger, cannot wait to watch this with you guys!!

Marc Galanin

Yes I was hoping you were continue this trilogy, heath was a great joker one of the best I'd say.

Melissa Creel

YAAS!! I have been waiting for this. Heath Ledger is unbelievable. This movie really left an impact on me.. Alfred's line "Some men, just want to watch the world burn" is so scary and haunting. And the end is just a gut punch. You really feel this movie. Absolutely amazing. So glad you have watched this.

cindygrape

It's been quite a while I've watched the trilogy! Actually I think I rewatched the first two just before seeing the 3rd in the theatres in 2013 and I haven't watched them since. Despite Nolan being my favorite director I haven't revisited these like his other movies! Loved watching Batman Begins with you and I'm so excited to revisit this masterpiece again with you! P.S. I commented about the games on the Batman Begins full length video and an update: Arkham Asylum stands the test of time, it's still 10/10 no notes!!

Yes! This is my favorite movie. It's been my number one for a long time. Not only because Heath Ledger gave what I believe to be one of the greatest villain performances of all time, up there with Hannibal Lecter which y'all saw not too long ago. It was also sadly one of his last performances because he passed away shortly after this movie released. I think that this movie is one of the best examples of how to use archetypes in storytelling. I've heard that storytelling is like mathematics but for describing the complexity of the human soul. Just as mathematics is a tool that allows us to describe and understand the universe, storytelling is a tool that allows us to understand the complexity of human emotions and spirit. In reality, archetypes are not how humans work, but they are a distilled representation of an aspect of the human experience. The stories that stick with us are those that distill the complexity of the human soul into archetypes which we can understand: Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, most fairy tales. This manages to build complex characters but to build them around an archetype: Batman representing order and the Joker representing chaos. One of the things that I love about the representation of the Joker in this movie is that he doesn't actually have an origin. He tells two stories about how he got his scars and both of them are different and it's clear that he's just making it up. Contrast that with Batman who has a very clearly defined origin which is a core part of his character. Denise hit the nail on the head when she described him as a hurricane. He's less of a person and more of a force of nature. You can tell he's intelligent, but his goal is nothing more than chaos for its own sake. I can hear you guys speculating about his background throughout the movie, but that is the human impulse towards order taking over. We want there to be a reason. The idea that there is no reason to it is what unsettles us the most. "Nobody panics when things go according to plan." Remember he's not a monster, he's just ahead of the curve. All things tend toward chaos, order is the unnatural state of things and all of our lives are spent trying to make some order out of the chaos. Anyways, I'm glad y'all continued with the series. The Dark Knight Rises is good, but I think it's the weakest of the series. I think it does provide a good capstone to the trilogy though and wraps up some loose ends in a satisfying way. I hope you guys have some horror movies planned for spooky season!

I absolutely love this movie. Great writing, great acting, great action scenes with practical effects, great story with real moral issues that makes us relate to the characters. And ofc amazing soundtrack. 👌 Heath Ledger is incredible, it's like Ari said at the beginning, we don't even see the actor, all we see is Joker. Now, you should finish the trilogy, just to close the story ☺️

Maxxwell Denton

Now as said before you really should watch the 3rd film. Not just to finish off the trilogy but for the musical dance number alone. Who knew Christian Bale could do such high kicks?

RabidMango

I very rarely suggest movies 'cause I don't think my preference supersedes anyone else's. But portions of this movie were inspired by Michael Mann's "Heat." It stars Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino, Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd, Natalie Portman, Tom Sizemore and more. Almost universally agreed as some of if not the very best heist scenes ever put on film. I'd love to see your reaction to that.

Here is my experience with this movie, and trilogy. I am a long time fan of Batman, he's always been one of my favorite superheros. Joker has always been one of my all time favorite villains. I loved Tim Burton's Batman, I even liked Batman Forever. Original cartoons. I didn't get to see them often, nor the animated films. Only got to see The Killing Joke. I loved Jack Nicholson's take on the Joker. He was a great villain. Joker I always felt though wasn't being portrayed in the way I thought he should. Pure chaos. Don't get me wrong. Jack's interpretation was one of my favorites but I did always feel it was not quite where I'd like the portrayal to be. Batman & Robin really let me down overall. Wasn't a fan of it. When Batman Begins came out, I was sooo happy after seeing that movie I cried during the credits and said - they resurrected Batman. Seeing that joker card at the end made me soooo excited for how they would portray Joker. Cut to later when they finally announce the casting and it's Heath Ledger. Now I'll be honest, when I first heard he was cast I wasn't excited. I was like "Wait what? They cast him? That will never work." But I was like oh well, and didn't have high hopes for the sequal to Batman Begins. Later I'm re-watching "10 Things I Hate About You" - which if you haven't seen I highly recommend it-A very fun little teen Rom-com. There is a scene in that film though when I got to it, it made me rethink my feelings about Heath (RIP) being cast as Joker. Suddently I was very interested to see what he would bring to the role. Then they released the first images of Joker for The Dark Knight. I was ecstatic! I took one look at those images and was instantly in love with this character. You look at them and you can just see the chaos in that makeup. I was sooo dang excited. And then I saw the movie and it blew me away! He was everything I wanted in Joker and more. This movie is by far one of my all time favorite films. Not just comic book movie but in general. I love this film. This was a fun fun fun time. So happy to come back to this movie with y'all. It's in this re-watch that something occurred to me. So I couldn't quite finger it before, but Gordon says 5 dead- two of them cops. I always wondered who the other cop was and it's not until now that I realized there may be a darker moment in this. Unless I am wrong or missed something, cause Harvey said Ramirez gets to live to fight another day, less I heard wrong. Then just knocks her out. I'm thinking when she came to, that the guilt got to her and she took her own life. Would that be accurate?

Eddy Lheat-99

One of greatest not only comic movies but movies in General. Heath ledger truly gives a chilling performance and the way Batman can’t intimidate him is so cool to see the complexity of the joker and why he in my mind psychology wise is Batman greatest foe

Eddy Lheat-99

But I think the Dark Knight rises gets a bad rap and is a strong finish to this trilogy

Helion

So about Joker's lip licking. That was because when they started shooting the movie, the glue they used to stick the prosthetics wasn't holding properly. This is why Ledger had to keep licking his fake lip to force it back into place. They were probably able to fix that, but the little mishap, managed to add to his character. Ledger isolated himself for 2 or 3 months to prepare for this role. He literally became a creep. And when he showcased a little performance to one of his friends, the dude got chills down his spine. And blowing up that hospital... THAT DETONATION WAS UNINTENTIONALLY DELAYED. AND HE JUST IMPROVISED!

A great trilogy, 2nd only to Lord of the Rings. Heath Ledger is legendary n the Joker role. Once you are finished with this trilogy and you are interested in delving into the Alfred back story, why not give the amazon series Pennyworth a go. It takes you right back to to Alfreds origins and how he got involved with the Waynes and is a great series.

Dee

D-Nice! Your hair looks so good, I love it! I'm not the biggest batman fan, but Heath is my favorite Joker and his passing still stings💔

Luis Ramirez

What i love is that joker knew batman was gonna go for rachel and gave him in purpose the address to dent and create the last piece of the puzzle like joker said all it took was a little push and the anarchy that comes with it

Luis Ramirez

Heath ledger not only is the best joker he created a bar that can never be reach and nolan just made it once again where its just a complete masterpiece

You were only going to watch Batman Begins???? I cannot even fathom how you could begin this series without a firm intent to watch such a legendary sequel as this. It's not my personal favorite film or anything, but I saw it in theaters and it blew me away and I still think it's rare masterpiece of cinema. It's like watching Star Wars and not watching Empire after! (And I say that as someone whose favorite SW film is the original) Either way....glad we got you to go for it!! And don't get me wrong, there's some people I wouldn't care if they watched it or not....but y'all have such a deep and nuanced appreciation for the art of filmmaking, I really loved all of your insight about the first one, but all I could think was what was coming next, and wondering what incredible viewpoints you would have of such an amazing film. So again.... thanks!! It really means a lot to know you care about what we want! 😊

Turnt SNACO

It's not terrible by any means. It's just impossible to follow a film like this. People will only see the flaws in it by comparison, the ways in which it ISN'T The Dark Knight.

Qui'Errah Marshall

Loved your guys' reaction! Also interesting is when Batman says to point the gun at the people responsible. And how the coin only lands on tails for Batman, but not for Dent or for Gordon. And for Joker's makeup, apparently when they applied the makeup(especially around his mouth), it would fall apart after 10-15 minutes I think. So to avoid having to reapply it over and over, Ledger opted to licking his lips to keep it on, adding those creepy and interesting micro-expressions. Also yes. Harvey's face is a mix of practical and CGI.

I was waiting and ready for this. I’m happy you listened and watched this. Make sure to go ahead and watch DKR as well. It’s a nice conclusion to the Nolan BM series. Just a few things to go over before i forget. The hospital scene where Joker starts to blow it up. I know how much you both love practical effects. And Denise even mentions that “imagine you get it wrong.” Funny enough, this is actually a blooper from the filming. It was suppose to be nonstop chain reaction explosions until the BIG ONE. When it stopped, Heath was like in his head, “wasnt there supposed to be more?” And starts banging on the detonator, and then BOOM! It was so good, fit the Joker’s personality so well, they kept that take in the final cut… cuz ofc they didnt want to have to rebuild and blow it up again lol. I also loved that you picked up on the handheld for Joker scenes to show the “chaos” around him. Also the bomb that went off at the MCU, that was placed inside the other crazy guy. He had a phone bomb in him and that’s why the Joker wanted to call, to activate the bomb. Like i said, couldnt wait for this one, and now cant wait for the final movie(next week i bet hehe).

I'm one of the 19 people on the planet who saw this movie and didn't like it. This will be my second time ever watching it, so perhaps I'll enjoy it the second time around. It's possible I just wasn't up for it being quite so long in the theater on the day I saw it...

JF Ranger

Was cool watching this great movie again after many years. One of the superheroes movies with the best dialogues I think. After The Watchmen perhaps. I need to watch this one again. Would be a super great fit for this channel now that I think about it.

Duarte Dunn

Easily a 10 out of 10 movie

Andrew Roach

Not the first time watch? You need to indicate Up Front when this is not a first time watch. I have come to really enjoy your reactions but to deceive us in thinking it is a first time watch when it isn't is something a reactor must never ever do as there is a big difference between the two. Saying it at the end is not good enough.

TheMediaKnights

None of the TDK trilogy films were “first time” which we explain in “Batman Begins” and touch back on it on the 3rd one I believe. We watched these when they came out so it’s been a bit. We were under the impression that everyone here would’ve seen Batman Begins first which is why we also say “we weren’t gonna cover it” It's not like we were hiding it, sorry you felt deceived as that was not the intention, instead we wanted to celebrate these films for what they are and share them with you all. Anything with the stamp "Still Good After" on our channel is something we've seen before and are revisiting after many years.

Andrew Roach

Sorry, deceive was too harsh but I did not watch Batman Begins and having watched the entire Dark Knight I really did not notice any signs you had seen it before. It was only at the end a slight remark gave it away. Always be safe and always indicate at the start of each video that it is not a first view if that is the case. Granted many times you may have forgot much and it virtually is a "new" view but it still should be said. Indeed as I continue to watch your collection, which is immensely enjoyable btw, I have noticed a few prior videos where you did just that.

Randy

if you haven't seen A Knight's Tale what are you even doing with your life?
