You've probably already been told but the Animatrix has episodes that tell the story of how the Kid was freed and of the Osiris's mission, which was brought up at the beginning. There was also a Matrix video game where you played as Niobe and you did the destroy the power station mission. But the Osiris story was done in front of some films as a trailer of sorts for Reloaded. I remember seeing it in the theatre before some movie, I can't remember what it was. That's when I discovered they'd done the Animatrix and it was my doorway into anime. The Wachowskis drew a lot of inspiration from anime, eastern religions and old Kung fu films. I really do recommend getting your hands on the ten disc edition of the trilogy. They have tons of docs about the making of and the philosophy and whatnot around the trilogy. I'm sure you can get a hold of it relatively cheap now, even on Bluray.

Actually from the moment Neo chose to go back in the Matrix and not to rebuild Zion it's something new for the story, like non of the previous 5 iterations did this, and non of them where able to affect the machines in real world.
