As a spaniard , this story is based on the spanish family Álvarez Belón . At the time this family was living in Japan and they were on holidays there when that happened. One day , María ( the mum) was taking in a spanish radio programme about their story and one of the Bayona's workers was listening the radio in that moment listened the story and called Bayona ( film's director) he was really interested in the story and decided to call María to ask her if the can record their story on a film . The family was really involved in the process and you can see a lot interviews of María taking about her story ,you can find them in english and in spanish

Such an incredible story built upon a humongous natural disaster. I think another movie you guys might like (that also happened in Thailand) is Ron Howard's film Thirteen Lives (2022). It's also based on true events that happened only about 6 years ago this coming year. A cave rescue.
