THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS & SNAKES FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION - Watch Along

Comments

Mister Lou

Awesome! I couldn't wait to see your reaction to this! Sorta like you I read the books, but only the trilogy and only after I already seen the movies a hundred times. and after reading the books, I watched the movies again but along with you two on here. but I also made the decision to watch this movie and THEN read the book for the same reasons. I like that we get to see the lake that Katniss and her dad went, where he taught her how to fish, hunt and pick out herbs that are edible. I only know that because of the books. an important detail for Catching Fire because that explains how she, besides Finnick, who grew up in a water district, knows how to swim. Also that weird little faceless baby creature that wiggled after Snow tapped on the glass looked like a baby version of those faceless mutts that killed Finnick. Even if this movie's absolute crap compared to the book, I still really enjoyed it of not for just the Easter eggs alone.

I so enjoyed watching this with y'all! I'm finishing the book now (on Part III) and love how they portrayed his character. In general, I think it causes us all to reason with our views of good/evil. It's found in the songs and in much of the dialogue that you both commented on. Dr. Gaul represents a view that endorsed being a predator rather than be hunted, Lucy Gray represented doing everything to stay on the right side of the line, believing in the good nature of people. I tend to think folks are motivated by survival. The difference is how he began to rationalize his decisions to survive when he wasn't in danger. The kid Bobbin in the arena was down, and he kept swinging, so there were little glimpses throughout where he kept crossing the line and it wasn't a survival need. From reading the book, it's clear he doesn't trust the capital either, so it seems he went more to Dr. Gaul's view that he would rather be the "victor" than prey. I'm honestly glad Lucy Gray's character got to get away as a mystery - there is no way he would have stayed in 12 so I don't think he really loved her, i think it was more obsession and convenience. I think he cared but his motivation to get back to capital at all costs never wavered. Regarding the snake bite, I don't think it was poisonous or certainly not why his mouth was bleeding. In Mockingjay, Finnick shares that Snow poisons people and would drink from their cups so they would not get suspicious - and that is why he bled, because the antidotes didn't always work. I think the arena in this game inspired the cornocopia in the future games - this is just my hunch and I don't know if it is ever described in the books. I'm writing alot but it was such a joy to watch again with y'all because y'all picked up on more themes than I did which is always fun!
