GODZILLA (1998) FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION - WATCH ALONG

Comments

Mike

To really understand this movie you have to understand the time frame it came out. It was intended to be a truly distinct franchise, an American take on Godzilla, something would not be confused with the Toho/Japanese version. They also wanted it to look real, the MAJOR complaint about the old 60s & 70s movies was how fake they looked. They wanted this to look like a reptile & not a guy in a suit. However it failed to really capture the general audience and the Godzilla fans rejected the design. I personally always liked it, but I like realism.

I remember when I was a young lad I took the bus to go see this movie lol and the sound track was awesome they even had a video for on MTV with P Diddy 😂

Jack Burton

Why did you guys even watch this? No hate, just curious how this came up. I don't remember this being in a poll.

Gary Giaimo

So check out the movie Cloverfield, per a request you made mid-watch.

Depending on which research you look at, Komodo dragon bites are venomous. Some say poisonous because their saliva is full of bacteria and it makes their bite extremely infectous. Basically anything they bite dies of gangrene. But some research now says they use venom to kill.

I watched this film in the theater when I was in junior high school and was sorely disappointed. I was checked out by the time the obvious Jurassic Park velociraptor baby Godzilla rip-offs were hopping around. Tried to rewatch this a few years back and didn’t get 5 minutes in.

Legit, I've learned sooo much about filming movies and different perspectives from listening to your commentary. Not only that but it's super funny too. I think this movie came out a dumpster fire. It had so much wasted potential, and how much it relied on CGI was it's ultimate downfall. It could have been great!

It wasn't on a poll, but sometimes reactors make Executive decisions to watch what they would like to watch, I'm cool with it as long as it's not all the time, there's some reaction channels that just upload whatever whenever without polls or asking there followers for suggestions or anything and those I refuse to subscribe to lol but once in a while I don't mind

Basically as I mentioned in the beginning of the video. I was going down the rabbit hole and watched a few of the original Godzilla films. So we wanted to check out the modern takes since “Minus One” came out and we’ve been hearing great things about it. Never expected this experience however 😂

TheMediaKnights

I just don’t see the logic in taking the name and not utilizing much if any of the source material. Why didn’t they just call it something else? I appreciate the effort in modernizing the character but a modernization shouldn’t completely erase the character.

TheMediaKnights

Thank you! So glad you’ve been enjoying these and you get to take away something from it. Before we even get to the CGI, which to be fair looked ok during certain sequences and during others it seemed like they ran out of money 😂 We need to have a good story/script.

TheMediaKnights

That was the same point when I (Ari) logged off. The blatant attempt to recreate Jurassic Park and its success without any of the wonder/adventure that made those films work. They could’ve done something different here!

Joey Cintron

LOL I totally agree!!! 100%. I feel like they had something, but the execution fell short. I watched a lot of Godzilla documentaries leading up to me going to see Godzilla Minus One. This 1998 reboot has always kind of been the redheaded stepchild of the franchise. 😆

Lol well like I said, you really have to have been there in 1998. Tho that's really what the majority of ppl have always said since the movie came out. Ppl were still riding high on Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs in that movie blew everyone away. Prior to that dinosaurs were mostly stop motion. That created a desire to use CGI for Godzilla, who a great many adults in the 80s and 90s viewed as a dinosaur. My parents to this day think Godzilla is a T-Rex. The studio wanted something that looked "real" like the dinosaura in JP. They wanted something distinctly American, that they wouldn't have get confused with the classic. That classic at the time was VERY much considered to be hokey and cheap and only for kids. It came on TBS Saturday mornings and was looked at as silly by most adults. They wanted a serious, believable, American Godzilla. Its a great example of failing by giving ppl exactly what the focus groups said they wanted

All I remember from this movie is that it's always raining and half the cast of The Simpsons make a cameo. Maybe it's better that way. Thank you for watching it so I don't have to.

This movie is my go-to example to show that the screenplay that started a project is sometimes wildly different from what makes it to the screen. The original script for this was written by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio who are most famous these days for writing the Pirates of the Caribbean movies (also OG Aladdin, Shrek, The Mask of Zorro... they're great writers.) Terry wrote an article that mentions the experience here http://www.wordplayer.com/columns/wp55.Time.Risk.html. The TL;DR is that Jan De Bont (best known for Speed and Twister) was originally set to direct but was removed from the project along with Ted & Terry, and then Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich (hot off of Independence Day) replaced him and tossed the original script and rewrote it in about 3 weeks, and the mess they wrote is what made it to the screen. You can read a summary of what happened at the link below, then click Script at the bottom of the page to read the original script they wrote which I wish had made it to the screen because it's far better than what we got. "Yes, we worked on it, but our script got thrown out. We got story credit because they kept some basic elements -- but in our draft, Godzilla fought a second monster, and kicked his ass. We realized that Godzilla was the hero, and even if people were afraid of him in the beginning, they wanted to root for him in the end." http://www.wordplayer.com/archives/GODZILLA.intro.html

I've always liked this movie. I may be one of the few who does really like it for what it is. I would disagree with the writing out the romantic part, and I'm not even fond of romantic elements in movies. But I think having the romantic connection gives a more emotional connection to the characters. I would agree Nick shouldn't get back with her, but I also wouldn't write out the romantic connection as it would make her betrayal less effective, and a bit to on the nose. I felt she had a decent arch with her initial trying to make it as a big reporter motive and then comimg around to being the one that gave him the credit of proving his nesting theory. Animal was one of my favorite characters. As far as lore goes, I mean what else could there be? We know how it came to be. They explained it with the opening testing, Nick also provided some additional insite about how this creature came to be. Nuclear radiation mutated an iguana into a kaiju sized creature that is also born pregnant and could easily replace humans as the dominant species of the planet if allowed to continue living. What more explination could there possibly be? While I would agree I would hate for him to half to be killed, the reality is, there would be no way to contain this species anywhere. If they're compelled to travel this distance to lay eggs, they are going to get out of where ever they were relocated and once the young are grown and start reproducing the population will grow exponentially. The only real gripe I had with the film actually was not doing a thorough check of the garden after the adult was taken care of to ensure there are no more eggs. Nick with his science background should have considerred that animals that lay lots of eggs do so for a reason. It ensures that no matter what at least one or a few will make it. I anticipated this ending before they even went back to the garden at the end. Fun reaction though. I hadn't seen this in a while and was a fun watch.

I recently watched Godzilla Minus One in the cinema and it was a very good movie. It was reminiscent of the first Godzilla movie. In this recent movie it's very much about the human element. The original (Japanese) Godzilla was in part dealing with the aftermath of the nuclear bombing by the USA. Nowadays most Godzilla movies from the USA are just special effects spectacles without any soul or good writing. But Godzilla Minus One brings it back to the strengths of the original. Highly recommended.

Those NYC sewers are Ginormous . Ohhh how I despise this flick as a Godzilla flick. One instance that bugged me was Godzilla running from the military and the bridge scene. SMH

20:40 yes, that was a VHS tape in that camera
