THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (2002) FULL LENGTH MOVIE REACTION - WATCH ALONG

Comments

robert babcock

Loved watching along. Looking forward to the finale! :D And the books are different enough that they are a great story all on their own. You'll notice the "industry vs nature" theme all through out, Tolkien was a naturalist.

BlueVitriol .

Lotr HAS to be a masterclass in visual story telling and storytelling in general. Peter Jackson did such an amazing job condensing 1137 pages into these films. I love the zoom in on the "knowing looks" too (sorry don't know how to spell your names). I also cannot think of a better original soundtrack either!

Lucas

This has been said but these movies and rewatching them so many years later are still so perfect it's not even funny...LOTR trilogy is truly what you would call lightning in a bottle- it can't be reproduced twice- it truly was what happens when absolutely amazing source material comes into the hands of the best director for the job in the perfect time at the perfect location with the most perfect script and the most perfect cast and performance from every single person.....There's one a single thing you could change without taking away from it...All can talk about Helm's Deep which is to this day one of if not the best action sequence yet I'm a real sucker for the slower scenes in this movie that truly do a lot to expand some of our characters especially Aragorn....The amount of characterization and the INCREDIBLE wholesome romance story and feeling they managed to build with just a few scenes is so great and this movie is the perfect stepping stone to augment the scale and the scope of the story into the wider universe of the war of the Ring....The third entry is simply reaching levels of epicness hard to comprehend and that the word 'epic' is thrown around a lot but when I think of EPICNESS I think LOTR Return of the King lol cannot wait for it! Because you're absolutely right...this whole thing is setting the table for the conclusion and third movie is really the emotional payoff and i'm always a mess by the end of the journey anytime I watch these...

All of our Patreon videos are watch along format meaning you need your own copy to sync up. This is also stated before you sign up.

Here we go! I'm gonna sit and watch it now :) Can't wait to get my feet up and get started on it!

MotoDork

Putting the full movie on the screen with audio would likely violate copyright.

Eshwar Tangirala

Tolkein is considered the father of fantasy, he is one of the gods of authors. Peter Jackson and the books were very accurate to the lore, had to condense and change a few things for movie format, but the messages are there. In fact, the entire universe consitsts of 3 different ages, and like 8 different books, and the entire LOTR story is probably less than 10 percent of the whole world!

TheMediaKnights

Yep! Definitely not protected by fair use and highly illegal since it is considered piracy at that point.

I highly suggest you check out the making of videos after the movies. It's hours and hours of pure filmmaking gold. Some fun production tidbits: - John Rhys-Davies aka Gimli also voices Treebeard - They couldn't get enough men who could ride horses for the riders of Rohan, so most of them are women with fake beards :D - The miniatures (or big-atures) in these movies are amazing. IMO still beats all the CGI they use in movies nowadays. - All the aerial shots were done with helicopters of course, no drones existed yet. Can't even imagine the amount of flight hours it took. Worth it, though. - It still amazes me how fluently they "shrunk" all the hobbits and Gimli with camera tricks and by using doubles. You don't even think about it, but basically every shot they have different sized races in is an effects / trick shot one way or another. They had small doubles for hobbits and Gimli but also tall doubles for men in other shots. Shout-out to those unsung doubles. Just amazing.

Every time he sees any part of this movie, my dad talks about how one local reviewer for the newspaper here when this movie first came out apparently wrote: "This is a movie that starts without backstory and ends without resolution. A terrible example of storytelling."

James Forrest

Well that was brilliant, I thoroughly enjoyed that all the way through and once again you two were great watching companions. Three and a half hours and it went by like lightning. Few things; I always forget until I see this film how brilliant the character of Theoden is. To give you some context - and it's there in little moments like the "the day has gone down in the west" speech, which is beautiful and one of my favourite passages from the book - he has always believed himself to be inferior to his forebears who did heroic deeds and fought wars and are considered great men by the histories ... he sees himself as a king leading a realm in decline, and in some ways as a failure. In the book, Faramir does not take Sam and Frodo to Osgiliath. In what I think is one of the more controversial changes to the story, he rejects immediately any temptation from the darkness, saying of the ring "I would not take this thing if I found it lying by the road." But Pippa Boyens, who wrote the script, always believed that would break the audience immersion as regards the ring's terrible draw, she actually thought it undercut the whole idea they'd been building to. I actually love the way Faramir's arc is well thought out and it plays wonderfully in the film, and in particular because it gives us Sam's wonderful speech about the stories filled with hope. Still, I am uneasy with the change in some ways because, of course, Gandalf turns down the ring, Galadriel refuses it and it never crosses Aragorn's mind for one moment to wield it, all realising it would destroy them ... and so it's not a stretch that Faramir, who is a different sort of man from his brother, would do the same. I can't complain too much about the change because, as I say, it plays out magnificently in the film. But I am properly miffed (although, again, not to the extent that it spoiled anything) by making Saruman the puppet of Sauron. There are hints in the film, but only hints, that Saruman cannot actually be trusted at all and that he intends to become Sauron rather than serve him ... this is why he wants the ring taken directly to him and it's the reason, in the books, that is why his uruk-hai and the orcs of Mordor fight each other on the road with Merry and Pippin. Saruman's treachery is actually out there and open in the book, and his scheme much deeper. (He actually hoped at one point to acquire the lore to create his own version of the ring.) The two towers of the book are not, as in the movie, Isengard and Barad Dur, but the two cities of Minas Tirith and Minus Morgul ... they will have starring roles in the third film of course, and you'll understand that better. That's not so big a change. The one hint in the book that Saruman may be doing Sauron's bidding without even realising it is, in fact, my favourite passage of the whole novel, and provided me with an analogy I've used again and again in my own writing about football and politics ... and here it is; "A strong place and wonderful was Isengard, and long it had been beautiful; and there great lords had dwelt, the wardens of Gondor upon the West, and wise men that watched the stars. But Saruman had slowly shaped it to his shifting purposes, and made it better, as he thought, being deceived–for all those arts and subtle devises for which he forsook his former wisdom, and which fondly he imagined were his own, came but from Mordor; so that what he made was naught, only a little copy, a child’s model or a slave’s flattery, of that vast fortress, armoury, prison, furnace of great power, Barad-dûr, the Dark Tower, which suffered no rival, and laughed at flattery, biding its time, secure in its pride and its immeasurable strength." To me that's one of the greatest passages ever written. It's evocative, brilliant, beautiful, harsh and terrible. You look around at politics, especially, and you can see that same delusion everywhere ... it's a magical piece of prose. Tolkein, of course, was a wonderful environmentalist and in Treebeard and the Ents he found one of the themes of the book and which was echoed beautifully in the film, the destruction of the natural world and the revenge of nature itself. Sobering to think of it in a modern context. And the dialogue ... God, Tolkein could write a line, right? It's deep, it's poetic, it's literary ... where did modern writers lose the talent to pull that off? He was a professor, of course, and a great friend of CS Lewis ... maybe you need to be to write with that sort of lyricism! Everything about the movie was wonderful. I remember seeing it for the first time in something like dread; I was scared to death that after having pulled off his wonderful act of world building that Jackson might drop the ball when it came to the big set piece moments. I needn't have been concerned. He killed it. He absolutely did. A stunning spectacle and one of the great battle scenes in all of film. (Only Braveheart, Zulu and a couple of others do it better. He actually moddeled the Battle of Helms Deep on Zulu; if you haven't seen that you simply must, it's tremendous and still packs a punch.) There were some standout performances amongst the newcomers to the cast, but as good as they all were it's Bernard Hill's portrayal of Theoden which is the best. Hill is one of the "noble" British actors who has done so much sterling work in his career that it's no wonder he can embody such a complex character as this and carry it off. His career best, actually, is a show which has legendry status here in Britain but will probably be nearly unheard of in The States, which is a huge pity; it's called Boys From The Black Stuff, an urban drama about growing up poor in the Thatcherite 80's ... it's astounding. If you ever get a chance to see it don't hesitate. It'll break you hearts though. His performance as Yozzer Hughes is off-the-charts phenomenal. Of course, nobody can talk about the movie without talking about Gollum and Andy Serkis who was the "body double" for all the CGI shots and who also did the voice has become so synonimous with the role that he is the narrator of all three parts of the Rings trilogy on Kindle and The Hobbit as well, and listening to them is a pure pleasure. He wasn't actually being hired to do more than provide the voice but he got so into character that Jackson used all his mannerisms and facial expressions in putting Gollum together and he ended up one of the key members of the production. Gollum is still, even years on, the hands down greatest CGI character ever developed and put on screen. The genius, the talent, it took to pull that off is mindblowing. I watch it to this day and still constantly have to remind myself that we're not watching an actual living creature; seeing Gollum in the film for the first time was, I think, when I realised Jackson was going to pull it off after all, that this was going to be a classic. And it was. Such a pleasure to watch it with you two fine people, and I cannot wait to do the third part, because it's another huge expansion of this world again. Everything is just scaled up and up and up for the finale, it's really an extraordinary cinematic and storytelling achievement.

MotoDork

Theoden is not Eomer's father. He's his uncle.

danzogonzo

I can't find the extended version on my Amazon account 😫😫😫 "WHAAAAAAAH!" #WHOFRAMEDROGERRABBIT! Please tell me that you've seen that movie!?! 🤞🙏🤞🙏🤞🙏 WHO FRAMED ROGER ROBBIT!!!

Reed James

The dumbest thing in this movie is talking about taking a stand at Helm's Deep is dumb. They are outnumbered but have castle walls which are a force multiplier. You could still have the tension of will w e win without making Theoden seem like an idiot for doing the only sound tactical decision they have.

Anna H

I'm so happy and excited to be revisiting these with you! The second-hand joy i get from you both is so infectious, the way you're so immersed and enjoying every second. It takes me right back to the magic of watching for the first time. :)

Casimir

I love seeing y'all's expressions on the major reveals... lol...

Michael G. Munz

The saddest thing about this movie is how Sam and Frodo never got to enjoy that rabbit stew.

Auronix Light

I'm still speechless, this is so amazing. My favourite saga/universe of all time, no doubts, and I get to watch it again with you, guys. 💙 I watch this trilogy once or twice a year, and I was starting to feel like I had to do it when I saw the first one uploaded on your channel 😱 Sometimes it's kinda scary how 'destiny' plays with us, cause I didn't even consider that you could react to it for the first time (at least one of you :P). You've quickly become my top reaction channel, and for me, this treat is beyond awesomeness. Now i'm a producer knight and also a patreon? I HAD TO WATCH THESE FULL LENGTH VIDEOS! These movies carry so many feelings and emotions I can't even explain how wonderful it is for me to watch them with you. You guys have earned and acomplished already a lot, I'm proud and happy for you. Thank you so much for sharing your reactions with the world. See you on the epic grand finale ☺️

Ludus Aurea

Yesss good thing I napped

Presto2222

I absolutely loved watching this along with the two of you. Seeing anyone else discover this world for the first time, is always a great time.

Ludus Aurea

Now you get to understand the Denethor memes. And Gandalf sax.

TheMediaKnights

We are glad to hear you enjoyed! This has been such an incredible ride so far. Can't wait to share the big finale with all of you. Also, I think I'll definitely give the books a read whenever I have some spare time!

TheMediaKnights

Condensing and adapting a story of this scale is not an easy thing to do! Peter Jackson absolutely killed it. Happy to hear you enjoyed watching alongside us. By the way, our names are spelled Ari and Denise 😄

TheMediaKnights

Absolutely agreed with what you said. This film takes it's time and explores all of these characters thoughts, wants and wishes for a better future given us a perspective as to why they are doing what they are doing. Going in knowing they are the good guys is good and all but getting to know their individual motivations is what makes these characters so damn real! The actors embodying these characters with so much love and passion is contagious.

TheMediaKnights

I continue to say it but I'll never get tired of repeating myself. The scale of this world is absolutely mindblowing. And the fact that Peter Jackson was able to give us that sense within a couple of movies is outstanding. This really feels like a lived in world. It feels like it's there when you're not looking and that's what makes these characters and landscapes loved by so many.

TheMediaKnights

The amount of attention to detail that goes into these movies is insane! Can't wait to check out all of the BTS.

TheMediaKnights

Thank you so much for the interesting read! It's curious to see some of the changes they made from book to films. My favorite thing you shared with us however was that amazing passage of the book. How Saruman believes he's being original in a way with his own master plan only to fall slave of the immense power of Mordor and it's evil within. Truly poetic and tragic. I can imagine how scary and nervous you must've felt going to the cinemas to experience this for the first time after watching that first one! Glad they stuck the landing. Also Andy Serkis is a legend! His work with motion capture is some of the best in the business. He's made these characters come to life. So glad he was part of the production team. The battles in this film are still impressive to this day which is a huge compliment to Peter Jackson's and everybody that made it possible. Although I suspect that it's gonna be surpassed by the next entry. This has been a phenomenal experience and getting to share it with all of you has been so wholesome and insightful. Thank you.

TheMediaKnights

Regardless Theoden's care for his people and the way he does everything in his power to keep them safe even if they end up losing is inspiring.

TheMediaKnights

Hard not to fall in love with this world. I've caught myself thinking about these films quite a bit. The world is so expansive, the music is simply delightful and the characters...oh the characters. So glad you've been enjoying these alongside us. Thank you for watching!

TheMediaKnights

This one had some twists and turns I definitely was not expecting! What a wild ride. Can't wait to share the rest of the journey 😄

TheMediaKnights

First off thank you for your immense kindness and your support. It truly means the world to us and we wouldn't be here without you guys having our backs. So glad I get to share this experience with the most awesome group of people. You guys are smart and insightful and it's truly a joy we all get to geek out over something that's loved by millions. Now I'm beginning to understand why this story touched so many. Thank you for watching! Can't wait to share the finale with all of you ❤️

TheMediaKnights

Getting to share this amazing journey with all of you has been such a joy! Thank you for watching ❤️

Ludus Aurea

One of the best ones is from that scene where you find out how badly Denethor treats Faramir in two towers . Well overall sone of the best are from two towers. Also there’s the Gandalf sax video and they’re taking the hobbits to Isengard. You’ll see. Peak 2005 internet.

Robert B

Never ever thought LOTR would be my kinda thing but once I'd watched the first one in the cinema I was absolutely hooked for the next cpl years waiting. I do love my trilogies though. First time I've 'synced' up to a reaction vid but really enjoyed it. Thanks man 👏

Grayson Vestel

I'm gonna lose me mind. This reaction is so much better than the general reaction simply because you have someone that has seen but not seen the extended edition; also, with a new viewer. This viewing is golden. also ROTK hurry pleaseeeeeee... also "DiD yOu KnoW ViGgO MorTeNSoN aCtUaLLy BrOKe HiS tOe?" greatest movie lore ever

Melissa Creel

These movies just get better every time I watch them. Your reactions and appreciation of the movies are amazing. Please keep up the stellar work. This one is kind of hard for me to watch when Théoden says no parent should have to bury their child. This came out not long after our young daughter passed away. After all this time it still gets me

Sagitaria

Hi there! I really enjoyed this reaction. It was a little hard to follow since I don't have access to the extended version, but I managed. It was amazing to watch it with you guys. Just some advice for Ari (I hope I'm writing your name correctly and sorry if I didn't) Why Frodo trusted Gollum? Why Aragorn let Grimma go? you need to keep in mind Gandalf's words on the first movie and Denisse's comment about the message of hope in these movies. “Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.” That I find the most important message of these movies and something you see through all of them. Hope to see you soon guys with the great finally. :)

Greg Nelson

There is so much great acting in Two Towers there is one moment I especially like, when Faramir releases Sam and Frodo, the expression in Frodo’s eyes is a haunting blend of relief and dread, as if Frodo half wished the ring WERE taken from him. Elijah Wood shows a lot of subtlety throughout the trilogy.

Donna Castellano

Any chance of a ROTK upload soon? Off on Wednesday and would love to watch with my "friends". 😁😁

Musicman II

How come we can't hear the movie?

Peter Niessen

Is it normal, nothing to see from the Movie after a few minutes? And only to see both of you?

Kaleigh Kaos

It's pretty standard, yeah. You see, there is this thing called a copyright that makes it illegal to present someone else's work for your own profit without a license (quite expensive) from the original creator. So, on an official and legit platform like Patreon, legit and ethical creators give an introductory view under the legal time limits along with a time stamp so that you can view your own copy on DVD, the streaming service of your choice, or whatever way you have a copy. That's not up to them. They're only charging for their own product/service, which is the reaction to the video, not the video itself. I watch in two windows or use the Patreon app on my phone and watch the film on my computer or TV, so there are two screens going. It's like watching a movie with friends when you don't have friends with whom to a movie.

Fanto Sir

I love watching these movies with you guys. Fellowship is my faves movie of all-time but the trilogy is so special too

Ava S

You explained it perfectly because I was confused at first... 😅🤣... it makes sense ..
