I think one of the better thing OPLA did was that Oda the person who wrote the story has also heavily involved in a lot of the stuff like casting as well as notes on scripts and script drafts and that they didn't do any changes without first asking for Oda's permission. I think that's why even though they change stuff to condense the story it still feels like One Piece. I've heard some people not like it as much since it's not a one to one of the anime but I think it's cool we see parts we haven't seen like Zoro fighting Mr. 7

I’m pretty sure the live action is just another adaptation of the manga, not the anime. That’s why all the costumes worn by the actors are from covers of the manga. Also some scenes that were not in the anime but are from the manga are in the live action. I just remembered the insane thirst tweets and TikTok clips of live action Zoro & Buggy when it aired, that was a wild time

IIRC none of the characters in the live action wear sandals because it would be dangerous to have them doing all those physical stunts in open-toed shoes. Luffy's sandals staying on during all his fights is probably like the third most unrealistic thing about the anime lol.

The main complaints that I’ve seen about the live action are about plot divergence/differences from things in the anime, and I have two things to say, which have probably already been said but I’m still going to say them lol: 1) absolutely everything was run by Oda,, no changes were made without his expression permission, and honestly some could have even been made via his decision 2) the live action is an adaptation of the manga, not the anime. Some things were censored for broadcast (like Luffy and how he got his scar), so they’ll be handled differently here to stay true to what was originally written It’s a given that the translation from anime/manga to live action means that some things don’t come through, and one of the showrunners did say that in order to help the show feel more grounded/realistic (bc I love this show so much but it is OUT there), they either changed some things (luffy not flying into the base) or just didn’t include them (sanji’s eyebrow and usopp’s nose). In cases like these, there are a ton of subtle nods to the things they couldn’t bring in, for the express purpose of letting fans know they remembered/cared. The heart and soul of the story is present even when it’s not a one to one, but everyone in and behind this show do so much to get it as close as possible if not actually accomplishing it.

Also some other thoughts hehe oops: - Zoro’s actor, Mackenyu, is the son of the legend himself, Sonny Chiba, and he is a GOD at fighting and stunt work. I love the fight choreography in this show, but it doesn’t even come close to what he’s capable of, especially because he’s got so much more experience compared to most everyone else. Some of the teams he’s worked with in the past are working on season two, and I am so. ex. cited. - Majority of the sets, including some you wouldn’t expect, are completely practical, and they only get better. The filming was done in South Africa to use ships already built for other productions, which helps to ground such an unrealistic world and make it feel more real. - There are songs from the original anime in this show, but the original soundtrack that Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli have composed is absolutely masterful and help build up some of the iconic moments in this live action to really help bring the umph factor for new viewers and also help fans of the anime immerse themselves. I understand all media is subjective and people can have their opinions, but the soundtrack for this show is something I will gladly die defending. It is AMAZING

It is worth noting that there were certain things oda denied but they pestered him for it for months until he gave in out of pressure lol. Lots of things were outside of Oda’s control so it’s disingenuous to portray that everything was how he wanted it, with these kinds of projects you have to compromise so every aspect of the show isn’t necessarily something he was pleased with, there’s multiple people in charge of the show from the film industry so oda just puts his foot down only when something too important is off the right direction.

I enjoyed the live action a lot because of the changes they made, the manga/anime is obviously better but, I think it turned out pretty well because everything was supervised by oda. the direction in some parts could’ve been better (in my opinion), but it’s still very enjoyable!! and I love the way some characters are treated here, I like helmeppo way more in the LA than the anime ngl lol I’m so excited!! the first 2 eps were directed by the same person (Marc Jobst*), and I love the way ep 2 is structured🕺

Technically the anime is also an adaptation of the manga, as is the live action. It's not fair to compare all of them because they're such different mediums, but I think the opla did a good job of rewriting the sequence of events so that the main plot is still depicted under 8 episodes. Also, I think the casting is great. If you watch some of their bts footage the actors are so much like their characters in real life

Just to be clear, although the live action is decent at adapting the source material there’s a lot of inconsistencies that opposes Oda’s writing on the mechanics of the world, character stuff and lore, like for example how water effects devil fruits users in this version. So please don’t consider any of the information/content you get from this live action as canon to the continuity/content of the anime/manga.

Cannon in epsiode 4 of the anime/manga chapter 1 when luffy eats the fruit, we see shanks’ reaction. He wasn’t angry, just freaking out and only seemed to care about luffy losing the ability to swim for the rest of his life and tells him so.

I enjoyed the live action but obviously the anime is waaaaay better for me. One thing I hated that they didn't include is how zoro was on board with luffy after beating axehand, there's a line zoro says to luffy in the anime after luffy gets him his swords that I think set the tone for their relationship and character relationships are so important in OP and important to the actions those characters make in the story , but yeah after finishing the live action I just took it for what it is, hated that zoro was not on board after this thooo, its so important to me.

I watched the live action when it came out and enjoyed it. But I still haven't watched much of the anime so I know it's different for people that are big fans of the anime first. It's not going to be exactly like the anime or manga caus things have to be changed to fit the live action format. I think people just need to treat it as a separate thing to enjoy it for what it is

I know it's hard to not compare it to anime (Which is amazing in its own right), but a live action is a vastly different format so of course things are going to be different. They changed a lot of stuff to appeal to people who haven’t seen the anime. It also makes it a little more interesting for people who’ve seen the anime so I don’t really mind it as long as you go in looking to have fun and see a different interpretation of the story. Ofc it’s gonna be different it’s live action with only a handful of episodes compared to the 100s of episodes of the anime. It was never gonna be completely accurate it’s just a different adaptation of the show. If you keep that in mind then you can enjoy the show for what it is. I thought this was gonna be trash like I never thought they could make a live action one piece work but they surprised me and this is really good and Oda is overseeing it. Their best decision. Just remember the live action is not exactly accurate to the anime. For example, Garp being there for the execution doesn't happen at all. To save time because its a live action, they cut or added scenes. However for a live action, this is a very good adaption to an anime. I think this is the best live action adaption I have seen so far from an anime. I hope you guys enjoy it and have a fun watching it! My favorite character in here is Buggy!

Sorry but that scene were they break the bottles is so lame. Same in the anime but worse since he gets a drink poured on him. Same when Luffy and Zoro get actually assaulted on Jaya. I don't even understand the lesson here. Turn the other cheek? The series constantly praises standing up against injustice, never bowing your head, never giving up your pride or dreams. Yet here, Oda is essentially saying it’s okay to let someone humiliate and hit you because the “fight isn’t worth it.” I get they can take them. I can take a 3 year old but I'm still not going to let them break things, pour drinks on my head and slap me around. At the very least I'd set boundaries and tell them to stop. At least a 3 year old has the excuse of not knowing better. These are grown men. Shanks and Luffy preach freedom and pride, yet here they quietly endure abuse. He's not shrugging off a rude word. There’s a difference between ignoring petty insults and tolerating outright assault.

Live action on Netflix was the first time I have heard about One Piece. I had never seen anime before, and honestly, I was very skeptical. Then, I really enjoyed the Netflix show, and I couldn't wait for the next season. At that moment, I decided to try the anime. Now I'm caught up, and One Piece is my favorite series.

Whilst a bit extreme, yes, i guess to make the message even more in your face I understood it as it's not worth your time retaliating or clapping back to people that will never change their ways (and most likely oppose to yours). They chose not to give them attention by responding nor leaving. This doesn't go against the freedom they preach but it's more about standing for their ideals (in Zoro's case is more about loyalty to his captain). Shanks does not care and was teaching Luffy not to lose control at the minimum someone disrespects him, but only fight for what actually matters (friends or dreams). I never took it as Oda saying it's fine to be humilliated because the fight is not worth it but to choose the moments you decide it's worth to fight or not, it's up to you, you got control over that and therefore your freedom of choice. In this case Shanks and Luffy chose that.

i don't understand when people say they hate this live action like yeah it's obviously not gonna be as perfect as the source material, but come on. you can see how much effort is put into casting, set, costumes, filming, editing, directing to make it as much as possible similar to the anime, the actors studying the characters, even oda himself helping with everything and filling up the holes with things we didn't get in the anime and manga, but still making it canon. like to me it's impossible to hate this. it's just warms my heart idk

Fun fact, Garp’s actor was actually in House of the dragon season 2, he was Alicent’s main kingsguard member. He was in multiple episodes and gradually had more screen time as the season progressed, he was the one with Alicent when during her camping escape in the forest. This was after the live action aired aswell

It’s definitely not canon, but yeah the production side of the show is really good, besides maybe a lot of those close up shots haha. The bad part is the writing imo. In terms of them adapting the manga material, not because they cut stuff out but due to the way they wrote the scenes they kept in and added.

Sorry for the ‘hate’ comments yall, but i just cannot for the life of me understand how you look at this as someone who loves the anime and thinks this does it justice or is a good adaptation. The set design and production quality/budget is the only thing good about this. Calling it an “abomination” ignores what it is doing well: introducing One Piece to an audience that wouldn't touch a 1,000 episode anime, while still paying homage to the original. It doesn’t replace the anime but it stands as its own entry point that’s already pulled thousands of new fans into the world you and I both love. The core of the story is intact. Luffy still embodies freedom and optimism. The crew still feels like misfits coming together to chase their dreams. The Arlong Park climax is handled with the same emotional weight as the anime, and moments like Zoro’s loyalty or Nami’s breakdown are treated with respect rather than watered down. What do you want? A one to one adaption? You'll end up with the live action version of Ed like they did in Cowboy Bebop and everyone hated it.

The live action is its own version. been into one piece for years and i think people compare it too much to the anime. The Live action it’s not a carbon copy, it’s its own take/adaptation. You can see the care for it, the comedy lands, the quality’s good with the transactions etc. if you love one piece, you’ll enjoy it more by just taking it for what it is.

You guys finally got round to watching it i remember you watching the trailer and the debate was so funny. Ngl i do have a very hard time loving live actions because i can’t help but the compare to the og media, but i got up to episode 4 of OPLA and i liked it so far, i just forgot to finish it so i’ll watch along too :) Of course so far i have my gripes with it (which i won’t say because of spoilers in the anime) but what it can do as a live action i think it does well and whilst they do take some liberties it’s all to flesh it out as it’s own thing rather than a direct copy. Hopefully you guys (especially Jack I’m curious about his opinion) like the show!

The live action is so much fun. I don’t know why people are calling it mid, when it’s just camp. Plus the live action did wonders with revolutionizing one piece franchise. There’s a whole new audience that started watching the anime after finishing the live action. So let’s put some respect on OPLA!

I grew up watching One Piece and having seen so many versions I was positively surprised by the LA. Honestly, I love the cast and while some scenes are a bit wonky, it's kinda crazy to see how they not only adapted a battle shounen, but an outright crazy and old one at that. Characters that I find okay in the Anime/Manga, like Helmeppo and Buggy, are literally my fav here. And Luffy's actor is so charming. You kinda just have to laugh when he does, like in the Anime. He also has great chemistry, especially with Nami's actress in the first episode. I can't wait for you to see the rest. Though watching the Anime and LA at the same time must be kinda crazy for you. Little side note: The outfits, especially of the crew, are all from the Manga or Color Spreads Oda drew in the past. And things like Morgan capturing Captain Kuro, or Garp going to that Marine Base were also covered in the Manga.

Oda selected the cast himself that's why they're so perfect. Fun Fact the anime VA's do the Japanese dub for the live action as well. I went back and watched some of it in Japanese dub and it was soooooo perfect.

excited for you guys to finally watch the live action! there's lots of mixed reviews abt the live action from long time fans not just in your comments but pretty much everywhere; imo the live action is better than I expected it to be however there are a lot of characterization and dynamic issues within the live action that take away from the original show and change things in a heavier way than casual watchers realize. some call it nit pickey but I think its just as valid to criticize the live action as it is to love it. enjoy it as its own thing and dont expect it to be a perfect adaptation to represent the source material!

These kind of comments are actually kind of weird to me. First, Oda was heavily involved in this so it is what he wanted most likely. Second, it can’t be like the anime because the anime already exists. In other words you never make these 1 to 1. What would be the point? You already have the anime, you can just go back and watch it. The anime itself doesn’t follow the source material perfectly… A third point but not directly related; I don’t think it’s valid to criticize based on the anime since that’s not even the source material. The manga is. And considering Oda changed the direction of his own story, it was never meant to be as big as it is originally, then making small timeline changes in the LA which can’t go as long actually makes sense. As long as the bones are there and characters are right, which I personally think they are, I think it’s fine 🤷🏻‍♂️
