Poor guys can't get over how he can say such smooth lines while at the same time being completely blind

Quyan640

It be funny if while taking to V Kai unlocked a skill like [Dense/Oblivious Flirt].

So what is a "kit"? I even googled but i still don't really understand how it's used here. I did find kit fox but this animal isn't a fox... So still a bit confusing

Alexander Belousov

"kit" is a word for a newborn of certain small species, such as fox, as you correctly noted. But, it is not limited to foxes. I suppose it is appropriate for weasel/stoat also.

Dizzy

That's the entire reason he can be smooth. Otherwise he'd be bumbling idiot too.

Trevayne

Thanks for the chapter and happy Thanksgiving.

Dion Hier

Does someone know the affinities of Flynn and why the kit might be a good fit?

I have to say, I love the story and I’m such a fan of all the characters but I genuinely dislike Flynn. Can the author make him a little less arrogant/smug/wonder child please? It’s a little frustrating seeing how 1. He always gets whatever he wants with little to no effort - somehow he goes from basically a street rat to a spy/informant to #1 in the military academy for freshman. Where is the supposed struggle for non mainlanders? Somehow he’s so smart and cool that he even got the teacher to create a bet he won. 2. He is always right & never wrong - seriously, has Flynn ever been wrong or made a mistake in the books? Even with his family drama, he comes out squeaky clean and perfect. 3. Smoothly handles all human interactions while Kai flounders away at everything (the clueless anime protagonist role is really stupid and frustrating. I get that he didn’t have romantic experience in a previous life but cmon…) 4. No one ever gets one over on Flynn. Ever. And Kai is the butt of all jokes and a doormat when it comes to Flynn. It’s honestly frustrating. 5. Also why the heck does Flynn understand Hobbs. What’s the point of the bond/familiar skill if Flynn can understand him better than even Kai. Because obviously Flynn can right? What can’t he do… I think I would like Flynn’s character if he had some flaws. If he had challenges and failed things. If he struggled. If he made mistakes. If Kai created boundaries around Flynn’s behavior and Flynn actually apologies for his behavior sometimes. Somehow it seems like the author tried to write a book about Kai but gave Flynn so many of his own characteristics that he can’t help making Flynn the perfect character. Again, I say all this as someone who is a fan of the story. Who loves the characters. Loves the magic system. It’s a bloody shame that somehow we have one secondary character who has to be perfect because the author seems to have fallen in love.

I agree with the previous comment. I’m a big fan of the story, this world and the characters. But the benefits being given Flynn’s way are just too much in the context of this world. I like Kai’s friendship with Rain. It is a relationship between equals. With Flynn on the other hand: 1. Kai helped him change his profession to a better one. 2. Kai gave him elixirs that enhanced both his lighting and shadow affinities. 3. Kai is paying for his tuition at the academy. The first two items especially are invaluable and equates a lifetime oath of service if given to someone else. And I just don’t see Flynn actually striving to create something on his own and contribute. He is just benefiting from the people around him. And if he can understand Hobbes, then I just don’t see the point of Kai and Hobbes having a bond either.

Nick P

Completely agree. I’ve nearly dropped the story multiple times and it’s solely because of Flynn until I resist because I like pretty much every other aspect.

noel meehan

High shadow affinity and I think some of his general skills and class is specialised towards stealth

I really like Flynn, and I think some of the complaints about him are overstated. But maybe a Flynn pov chapter would be good? Getting into his thoughts, his insecurities, his doubt. We've seen before that he is really good at hiding those things. But that also makes it so that us as readers don't get to see it most of the time.

Jacob Ogundare

I understand the frustrations with Flynn character, but in this story and even irl I have seen people given every opportunity and squander it and vice-versa, so I am hoping for a side plot where Flynn struggles and grows with all the resources he has been given. Things like aspirations, goals, weaknesses, vices e.t.c we don't rly know much about Flynn other than following Kai.

Jacob Ogundare

Personally I thing Flynn understanding hobbes is in character because he is always perceptive of ppls emotions and actions and my interpretation of this dialogue was since Kai upgraded his bond to be equal now he understands to what extent Flynn understands hobbes but I might have read/interpreted wrong.

The part about Flynn and Hobbes bothers me to no end. Hobbes even calls Flynn his favorite in his POV chapter. There’s genuinely no reason for any of this. Even if he has some great reveal at the end, it’s a waste. Kai and Hobbes have skills named after each other but Flynn is the special one who somehow is so good at anything he can even understand the space cat that Kai couldn’t even touch forever. Also it makes no sense that Flynn can sweet talk Hobbes into liking the new Kit. Hobbes entire thing has been about jealousy and being special. He hated the idea of Kai getting another familiar but 5 seconds and a piece of salmon later, Flynn has convinced Hobbes to look after his kit.

G

I’m tired of this being the excuse for him. Ok so in his pov he has insecurities and issues? That doesn’t mean there is any basis for him to be such a smug and cocky smart mouth who has a rabbits foot shoved up so far his ass, he can literally do no wrong. Look, the author can have his favorite character. He has mentioned before he based certain aspects of Flynn after himself. But he is ruining the story with his characterization of Flynn. Somehow Flynn is so talented that he is the #1 in the martial academy when mainlanders are supposed to be so far ahead of everyone else. Flynn is so smart even he tricked the teachers. He’s so talented that even the douchey mage from the exam thought he’s worth paying attention to. He’s so lucky that when it’s rare for someone to have even one affinity over 50%, he somehow has two (also lightning being more offensive/powerful than everything Kai has except for space). It’s so bloody frustrating.

Flynn hate is astounding here. Reminder to everyone that Kai was about to die during the voice of the ancestors / pirate raid, and Flynn killed his attacker (who was part of his mother’s organization). Flynn actively followed Kai out of the prison and saved his life. If Kai is on a path to be the next Elijah (Blue by 34), he will end up with no companions, and all characters who we’ve seen will fall away like his family. High affinities, maybe they were too high. Other complaints like Kai paying for his tuition (when Kai is extremely wealthy) are comical. Kai could pay his tuition 100x and it wouldn’t outweigh a life debt…

G

You do realize that Kai was in trouble to begin with because Flynn was caught trying to give him info. And then when Kai was caught, he struggled with the thought of letting him go. Kai had to tie him up himself. Regardless of whether Kai will be peerless by the time he reaches blue does not discount the fact that everything else people say about Flynn being a shitty character isn’t true. Because he is the worst written character with the biggest plot armor in the story. Also you severely underestimate how much the author seems to love him. Something tells me Flynn will be high/late stage Green and not far behind Kai into blue. It’s insane that Flynn who had no true training is keeping up with Kai and Valela who basically went through insane training regiments as children. But through sheer wit, charm, arrogance and an overabundance of self love from the author, Flynn has kept up with these two prodigies. It basically invalidates the 5yrs of training Kai had + his struggles in the pocket dimension. Why should anyone struggle if you can keep up with all the front runners without any of their struggles, the only downside being an easy life and being just a couple of years older…

Mohit

I think a stoat would be a great bonded partner for Flynn. It is mischievous yet intelligent and it's not obviously powerful to a casual observer. It also further connects Flynn to Rain. I'm wondering if this is setting up something for the 2 of them down the line. I look forward to it!

Mohit

BTW, I thought the recorded messages were a very sweet idea and helped showcase a familial bond between everybody in Kai's life. Now I wonder if Kea has news to share, or if it will be an even more emotional moment.

David

Wow, not sure why everyone is still so passionate about Flynn. I didn't think his role in this chapter was very significant, but that's all anyone seems to be talking about...

G

I think it was a tipping point. No matter what, Flynn almost always seems to have something special for him. The Kit was completely unnecessary, shows a bit of laziness from the author and favoritism in terms of giving him a special familiar bond as well. On top of Flynn somehow convincing Hobbes to look after the Kit after Hobbes is generally vehemently against other familiars getting special treatment. Not really a Flynn chapter but I think it’s just shows the author can’t help himself.

G

That was nice of Flynn to do Hopefully kea actually has something to say.

Mohit

You know, reading again, and I like the approach of introducing lore around a new character/concept as soon as it is introduced. It helps keep the information organized in your head and can help form an immediate sense of attachment or at least interest.

Mohit

Quick question, what is the calendar year for the current year on Elydes? They referenced things that might have happened centuries ago or they might have happened decades ago.

Samven

I'm surprised about the amount of Flynn hate. It's been established that Flynn is good at keeping his struggles hidden and feels immensely indebted to Kai for all the opportunities he has given him. That he strives to create an environment were Kai can focus on growing without worries has been one of his main character traits since Higharbor.

Just googled “stoat” and OMG the cuteness!!! How did I not know this adorable animal existed??? No wonder people are getting so jealous of Flynn!

Boo

Im not surprised by the Flynn hate. I bet Rain gets a lot too. I’ve noticed in comments on this book and many others on RR that readers get VERY upset whenever they perceive any other character as somehow upstaging the MC. LOL the comments can get particularly upset when another male character gets more female attention than the mc (believe it or not I’ve actually seen some readers threaten to quit series over this).
