Some Guy

Thanks for the chapter

Kaze

Why is he so obsessed with appearing as mediocre as he can? I get not wanting an extreme amount of attention but in every phase of this arc it seems to be his primary motivation. Feels like a quarter of each chapter is dedicated to his anxiety around the horror of standing out in any and all situations.

Because he's literally traumatized from his time in the forgotten realm? Kai spent years hiding from those stronger than him. Every day desperately avoiding attention just to survive. Those instincts and habits linger. Not to mention, he's lived his entire life as a third class citizen under the yoke of a repressive colonizing empire. He's rightfully terrified of his capabilities being discovered because he's internalized the idea that the nail that stands out gets hammered down. That even if he happens to be the main character of this story, he's essentially powerless in the wider world, let alone the republic, let alone the school. Kai has no reason to think he can flaunt his skills without repercussions. I get why it may come off as frustrating, but it's more than believable considering his history and circumstances. Remember, he's literally hiding under a false identity from the republic's military. Brazenly calling attention would be pretty stupid, all things considered.

Ready for a 1-2 month time skip just to see how fast he’s going to level his skills. Hes basically learned he’s been, relatively speaking, poorly training most of them

Michael Wall

I’d make it 2 or 3 years why waist the attempt if your going to do a time skip…. Make it worth it

LOOKOUT

If kai's fighting style is going to revolve around using the sword in addition to magic. Keeping a "minimum" level of physical activity may not be enough.

David

Seems to me he can utilize a spatial linear distortion as an offensive skill in a fight.

Kris Piskorski

I hope that he'll become a retainer of Blackwoods, at least on paper so he gets some protection in case

Samantha Lane

I want to know how many levels he got in Space Magic from that class!

Gorane

I think you should show how kuch his space magic skill improved by the end, it would be nice t9 have little reminders like that instead of only big-entire-status-at-once

Trevayne

Thanks for the chapter. Good to see that Kai can actually learn things in his Space class. It looks like he is better than all of his classmates in what he can do, but there are a lot of things like linear spatial distortions that he just never thought of. His attunement suggests he can pick them up quickly, but he can appear to fit in better if he sandbags by apparently being slower to acquire them.

Mohit

Yeah, I'm thinking it could work something like Sukuna's severence ability. That could get broken fast.

Mohit

I remember them saying in an earlier chapter someone made a lot of money betting Kai would not be found during the break. I'm willing to bet it was either Flynn or Rain and that it might be revealed next chapter.

Great chapter however I must confess that the whole hiding your powers trope is starting to get a bit repetitive for me. While I understand where he is coming from, he’s just so bad at it that it feels like this serves no purpose. I dont think that his teachers can even guide him properly if he keeps insisting on appearing incompetent. As soon as he is done with the fundamentals (which by his own judgement would take only a couple of months), there will be little point to even taking this class. So I hope he is at least honest with his teachers in the future if only so that they can help him more effectively.

Mohit

The only plausible way I can see him doing that is if he can gain political protection from someone powerful which carries its own set of problems. While Alden seems like a reasonable choice, he may not be making the choices in House Blackwood or it may tie him down in the future. Alternatively, he might get lucky with getting trustworthy teachers.

I'm curious to see if we'll touch upon the nature of his mysterious profession at some point. I'm reminded of the early stages of this story, the idyllic setting of the archipelago and then the encroachment of foreign powers from the mainland, there's this theme that echoes issues about colonialism, power and violence that would be a shame if it disappeared. Like the specificity of his profession being linked to the knowledge system of the Isles is so interesting to me, and then contrast that with the differences in how the mainland approaches magic and knowledge and the guide itself; and then on top of that the differences in culture and religion, like it hasn't really been explored too deeply but there's so much already here that could be played around with. It's a compelling motif, especially in an academy setting where historically these institutions were the ones that reproduced the kind of imperial power that we saw destroy Kai's home. You don't need to be R.F Kuang about it lol but its an interesting dynamic that exists in this story, and has a ton of narrative potential. Seeing Kai level up is super fun though, and its still a great story if its focused on that. Wherever dear author takes this story though, I'm on board, this has been a fun arc so far, I'm looking forward to read the rest!
