Yes! Mind meld with the space kitty!

Derek Walker

Damn, I really want a Dean perspective chapter now.

Corwin

Oh the chanting class will be good to give Kai a way to hide some more talent

jeremiah banner

I love when they make him squirm lol

Sébastien Kingsbury

I like that the dead called him out on hiding his abilities. Its a really annoying trope sometimes

David

It's funny how much the dean enjoys hearing Kai's lies with his truth telling ring

Stephen Pearson

Ha, busted:-) Thanks for the chapter!

Most other students would probably be too afraid of shredding their hands when imperfectly displacing something out of them... his mana control is simply that much better than theirs.

Trevayne

Thanks for the chapter. Kai is funny. He is clearly much better than all the other students in the class but he can't interpret their reactions. He thinks they are appalled by his lousy performance, but they are actually shocked at how much he can do. Maybe he will realize it before the end of the class. I wonder if Professor Astarelle is going to give him the opportunity to take the final and get credit for the course. If that happens, Kai is faced with the choice of continuing to take a class where all he is learning are basics of how Raelion teaches the fundamentals of space magic or he gets the added notoriety of being the only first year who managed to place out of space magic. At a guess, that would be right up there with his first place in the trials.

Brett

I thought it’d be funny if the dean brought out his bird artifact during the testing and told kai to cast something quickly/efficiently and that after he’d be asking him if he did his utmost to meet the instructions requested of him. Maybe for a future private session…

BLead Irish ambassador

I like that the dean (doesn’t seem) to be an ass. I would love him to be dedicated to his job. He doesn’t have to be a mentor. Just not corrupt or an antagonist. Too many stories go that route.

Brett

What are the chances of the dean tricking Kai (and Hobbes) with an exercise that Hobbes can do really easily but Kai dances around then Hobbes blinks into the room, makes does the exercise then blinks out… Or the dean giving a fake explanation for how to do something but Kai is trying to solve it so hard that Hobbes gives him the answer and Kai does it then the dean makes Kai walk through how he did it but Kai cannot answer because he realizes too late that the deans instructions would never have worked so the dean is totally on to him.

Reodude

Agreed. I dont want it to feel like everything is too easy for Kai (e.g. everyone is exactly who he needs and gives him exactly what he needs) but a Dean who's actually professional and cares about duty of care to his students would be great

Thomas Adams

Deans having fun baiting him because he seems to have realized he doesn't know what's normal on top the fact he's holding back

Larc

I wish Kai would learn his scuffed attempts to lie or appear low-key without any skills to help have no chance of working on green/blues. This entire chapter was just an inner monologue with no purpose, since as readers we more or less knew his attempts at hiding his skill would fail. Hopefully from here on he's a bit more thought-out in how he presents himself. Maybe he can ask Thornwyn for some advice.

Apep

He knew that Kai was lying. He has two truth artifacts. The bird and a hidden one. The hidden one is probably no so easy to fool.

Thomas Adams

I think the most important thing we got was the dean's attitude towards Kai's bad acting. Then there's more reinforcement that he's still mostly clueless about what's "normal" and also expectedly well past that point himself. Which would hopefully lead him to start to realize he's gotta interact with people more. While this might be optimistic, if it does change his mind, it is nice that it's a scene rather than a sentence.

Some Guy

Thanks for the chapter

When the Dean was interviewing Kai, Kai told the Dean that he picked parallax eye because he had some talent in space magic, or something like it. The Dean registered this as truth but thought that Kai had very little talent in space magic, and him getting the parallax eye would be a waste. It is logical to think this way because the vast majority of space magic students are not any good at space magic. But it was actually the opposite, Kai has a lot of talent with space magic, therefore, I think the Dean is happy that the parallax eye was not wasted on someone with mediocre space magic talent.

Balerion1891

Totally. Bet ya that last test would have been enough place Kai out of the Fundamentals class all together. Ruining his deams of being low-key.

Balerion1891

I have a feeling that if he would have completed that last task he would have tested out of the fundamentals class.

Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. JOLENE! 🎵

samwise

Has Matt can start with general relativity space time warping as a concept and go from there!

Austin

Wonder if kai will ever learn to make storage items like his ring. It's gotta involve space magic right? Otherwise they'd be a lot more common

Gorane

Great chapter, I liked the tension. I think perhaps the hint by the dean was too strong in the end and it couls have been a stronger reveal later on that he caught onto kai to such an extenr but it is fine

Gorane

I think a cool addition would be to give him a weird magical social skill unlock - "masked incantation", "deceptive casting" or "veil of false effort". A skill that basically allows you to convincingly make casting seem easier or hard than it really is to you.

WhiteWall

Monday chapter?
