I wonder if Kai's team lost? Maybe someone stole his flag as he was fighting? That would be a knock to his confidence. He probably needs one.

Heraclitus

Agreed. Kai's arrogance was a pretty in our face this chapter. I would be surprised if there wasn't some consequence to him not taking this seriously.

Thomas Adams

There's the reason for the exaggerated rumors of a crazed, bloodthirsty battle maniac...he's just a normal battle maniac with more experience than someone his age should probably have.

Some Guy

Thanks for the chapter

Adunn

The rumors are too much imo. Nobody cares about other people that much.

This has got me thinking, Elves are also equally "conditionally strong" as Sirens. Where if they get even close to nature you run the fuck away, Kai isn't even a specialised nature mage yet can attack with such overwhelming force.

Brett

It doesn’t make sense for Kai to have missed people from the group sneaking past or hiding from him.

Brett

Nothing until the very end hints that KAI was out manoeuvred or tricked in any way shape, fashion or form. To me, I would read into it that Kai is unhappy, and they are glad that they didn’t get eliminated while losing, and that they didn’t fail in their task.

Heraclitus

Why? He's not all knowing or all powerful. He's been tricked and caught off guard before. He literally notes that his opponents having lower rankings doesn't mean they aren't powerful or skilled. And then he straight up falls for a trap due to his arrogance, boredom, and desire to show off. Not to mention that there are near infinite amount of unique skills, techniques, and magics out there, and any one of them, combined with Kai's sloppy attitude and actions this chapter, that could very well led to someone sneaking by without him noticing.

Heraclitus

I assume that's just a common type of thing. You don't fight a water mage in the ocean. Or a lightning mage in a storm. An earth mage underground. Etc.

Joey Metzger

Fun chappie! Flynn is really taking this all seriously, I hope their group gets ranked high! I’m sure they all will think back on their memories of working as a group in school fondly. It would be cool if the top groups faced groups from other years, though I know the school doesn’t mix much.

Nana

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I really hope Kai's team loses at least a few major combats. If not here then sometime soon. The entire time he's been at school he's gotten win after win after win. Yes he's worked hard for his gains, but as of now, no one has presented a realistic challenge at the school apart from Rain, some teachers and his own ego. An actual loss that forces him to rethink his strategy and curb some of the ego is perfect for character growth. Yeah, haughty spoiled nobles will absolutely get steamrolled by someone of Kai's talent, but I'd expect true scions of families to be incredibly focused, to network and to quietly build their foundations before using every tool at their disposal to eventually crush their opponents (including Kai) when it matters. As of now, Kai has done -hilariously- little to understand the abilities of his peers or keep an eye out for folks who are purposely pulling punches. Plus, narratively, it's just more interesting to see a character overcome genuine struggles and face complex "villains."

Brett

I don’t think it would/should happen until they are competing with people who have real combat experience. Real life and death situations not curated, safe ones. When they can compete with 3rd years + above.

Thanks for the chapter.
