This is dumb and random, but I hope so much that the other guy they're hanging out with is B74. That's the guy who was turning into a (very rude) crazy person trying to navigate the class trades back when Alden was first selected. Last we heard, B74 had Morph and was still trying to trade up to something better. Alden ghosted him mostly on accident. I hope island life has let B74 calm down and act like a human again, regardless.

I think it is an excellent event for him to attend, though. Rabbits get summoned a LOT, and the chapter started with him wondering about how an avowed should be toward their summoner. I don't know another class that would be more able to help him figure out how that usually goes.

Natalie still wants Alden on her squad! I'm having more feelings than I expected about this given the recent Emban and Ryada resonances. If Emban (or Ryada) calls up Alden in the middle of her night to talk some time, I hope he tells her about the Pita of Delay - it was such a funny moment even as it was also so very relatable. You can see how much it's helping Natalie now to have that sign of how much Alden cares and also panicked in the moment; it makes some room for laughter with her friends among the more tender aches.

Sleyca's ability to write characters is always amazing to me. Take Natalie making the fowl-foul suggestion, which Alden immediately picked up on as being unsually harsh from Emilijia. It's a little bit petty, a little bit mean. A sign that she's still harbouring some anger/annoyance/sadness over what happened with Alden. But it's also so minor that we can recognise that its not that bad. It's a joke with a little bit of a sharp edge to it. It would have been easy to write Natalie as breaking down with sadness or absolutely rational. But its the ability to capture the paradox of being a teenager, where she is somewhere between "mature adult" and "petty child", that astounds me.

And he was just becoming aware that the stretchy pants he had on beneath the robe were way too interested in stretching now that they were saturated, and they were not nearly interested enough in doing their job as a pair of pants. It was a wonder he’d kept them at all. At least his messenger bag had stayed with him. " It would be pretty amazing if, while getting tossed around underwater and losing hold of Zeridee, Alden managed to nonetheless keep his bag from getting swept away. I think the bag helped out. Through everything they've been through together, their bond is probably already stronger than that of the average casual wizard who has owned such a bag for many years without relying on it to survive life-threatening situations.

I like that this question is being emphasized again, and I hope that we get to see Alden make multiple passes at the answer or maybe see events that help him form his ideas into an answer. His answer might be more significant than just how Artonan Knighrs summon Avowed and have them spend their lives... How will Knight Alden decide to summon an Avowed and in what situation will Knight Alden ask them to spend their lives? At least assuming if/when Alden reveals his Wizardry he is a Knight not just a special Avowed. If he is a Knight does that free him from the chains of being summoned like a normal Avowed? Does it offer the possibility of Humans getting to be equals with Artonans and not their lessers while still getting to retain a contract?

I really need to read more carefully. I got so confused during the flashback to Alden’s room while he was waiting for his clothes to dry. At first, I was like “oh, he’s back in his room now? When did that happen?” Then I went back and found the clause “when Alden made it back to the dorm” and thought it meant when Alden made it back to the dorm from the laundry room. Then a little later he was suddenly back in the laundry room and I realized he’d been there the whole time.

Magic items are almost exclusively handcrafted, aren't they? Even Wrightmade gear needs to be enchanted by an avowed. Even something as mass-produced as a nessi card needs to be enchanted by a person. Humans don't quite seem to get that. They're used to mass-produced goods. It might not occur to the majority of them just how much work goes into making a quality enchanted item. They just go "shiny rare item!" It makes me wonder who's responsible for making all the "lesser" enchanted goods, like smart-bandages. Maybe that's what wizards of Olget's caliber do with their time.

This was a confusingly time-jumpy chapter for me too. We had a maybe-week-ahead-but-not-sure Informant on Saturday AM watching a clip show of the girls chatting about Alden on the Friday previous. Then we caught up with Alden in the laundry room on Saturday evening (but it isn’t obvious if this is now off camera for the Informant on that same Saturday, or a week previous to his Saturday AM). And the dorm jump as you mentioned (though the girls are also heading back to his room with him pre-party too after this chapter) Alden implied to the girls that he got back earlier laundry-Saturday, but the Kon’s cup scene already was shown on the clip last chapter. So maybe Kon arrived in the AM or Friday evening and the trial delayed Alden to Saturday afternoon? I generally got confused which of this was Informant viewed. And the order bouncing from Sat evening to Sat AM’s Informant watching a clip from Friday after a clip of Kon from even earlier Saturday followed by laundry before talking about eventually heading to start prepping for the party. Did I get that right? A few quick clarifying edits would help folks like me, unless it’s obvious to y’all. I suspect the perspective/time jumping was intentional - keeping with the “Hopping” theme as “Flashes” did - but the confusion probably isn’t. My personal read: I think only the Kon’s cup and Rabbit gossip were Informant viewed? And it’s being watched by InfoPops on the same Saturday the morning before the party, so the laundry/cheese-basil wasn’t part of the recording but back in the main narrative. But if so that’s a short boring high school gossip clip following a pretty benign Kon-cup-clip for that to be the number 1 most entertaining Anesidora Saturday morning cartoon. If the Saturday evening laundry (or presumably the subsequent party) is Informant-viewed he’s watching a week later. And so far what we’ve seen from his PoV is IMO not worthy of Informant attention, as much as we soup-stans like it. So it feels like he’s building up to watching the party itself. So is more juicy clip coming next chapter, or are we done with the Informant POV for a while? Folks who read smart-good feel free to say “yo dummy here’s the real sitch”

Alden got rid of his competition with a smile and a single sentence.(Kon) “I think sky traffic control is going to *love* it when I ask.” That focus on the word *love* might have been his subconcious. He is always noticing what Natalie is wearing, though that might just be the Appeal stat in action. Natalie still liking Wobble Gobble, telling Alden she still got feeling for him, without realising it. Event is at Nautilus Needle; Putting Wobble Gobble on the christmas tree; Propping him up... I might be seeing things, but it could also be the girls helping prop up Alden on the Event. Also: Were the girls already at the event, noticed Alden wasn't there and went back to get him? They got their ears at the door presumably. The hero always arrives late, something something...

But he's definitely not watching Alden do laundry as part of the "Alden Thorn" episode of *Elias's Saturday Morning Show,* since Alden is doing that in the evening. It's a thought, but in this case, they've just been very busy sorting out their situation since their apartment got destroyed. And they've probably got prep for the dance company's big Lunar New Year show. Lexi intended to visit them almost every weekend after he started school in Apex and enjoys looking after his little sister, so he's strongly positioned to be the babysitter whenever they need one on a Saturday.

I once read a study about belief/religion/groups where scientist tried to figure out if they could predict the spread of a group (i think? it was a long while back). The interesting part and which I remember, was that personal sacrifice in the name of the belief indicated a stronger belonging to the group. I am not sure I remember the causality arrows though. Anyway, one part of the study focused on public showing of the belief, via wearing of symbols or special cloths, which can be interpreted as a personal sacrifice. So it is very interesting that the rabbits-only party gives out rabbit ears for entry. It implies that they need this show of belonging to strengthen their group identity. Now, why would they need to strengthen it? I can't imagine adjusters or brutes doing something like that. I think we are severely underestimating the mobbing of rabbits, if they feel the need to indoctrinate new rabbits, even with the hostilities against them, that we've already seen. And sure, this does not seem like an evil cult, but the general tactic of manipulation/steering is subtly visible. And if rabbits feel the need to strengthen their group identity (against pressure of an outside (other classes) force?) then what is happening with SWAYS, which we have barely interacted with? I think there must be A LOT going on there, if rabbits are already a bit cultish. Probably similar thing with uniques. Very interested to learn more.

Hadiza makes for an interesting case study here. She is a B-Rank Rabbit, with a usefull skill. Yet she does not wear the ears and was the most distressed about Natalie's financial state. I think she could turn into a wildcard or become the story's hidden focus for character growth for the comming event, as someone who is on the threshhold of the rabbit-identity.

I am glad that Natalie seems to have accepted that Alden doesn't want a romantic relationship (even if she still likes him a bit). Not just because I think Alden doesn't really have time or the mental headspace for it right now- but because she needs someone who can focus on her. She is incredibly busy, and likely to get more so, and should enjoy her life, ideally with someone who is not busy. Especially since with her talent, she needs to focus on having all the experiences- the more she <i>lives</i>, the better her cooking gets. Can you imagine 'in love' cake?
