[Note: This came out longer than I expected, but still on the short side. I'm not going to swear I can get by without a second skip day this month, but as long as we don't have another chapter that I'm fighting with in the middle of the night on posting day, I'm going to try for it.

I hope the end of your week is excellent.]

Lexi came back to the apartment on Sunday afternoon. Thanks to the magic of Bromelimas, and Kon being undeniably alive and well, he wasn’t in a bad mood.

He was insufferable about having completed all of his homework while Haoyu and Alden were moaning about theirs, and later that evening while they were decorating the tree, he did grill Alden on what had happened. But it seemed like he was more worried Kon might have embarrassed himself than been endangered. Considering the pictures and videos Kon had been sharing with friends since he got back, that made sense. Talking to a sweecha, dancing along with the sand images at the train station, and trying every beverage he could think of in his new cup—he looked like someone whose biggest problem was going to be his body’s inability to handle the amount of liquid he was pouring into it.

“A summoning like that is great,” Lexi said after Alden had finally satisfied him with enough answers.

They were sitting on the floor in the living room with a bunch of craft supplies provided by Lute. Last year’s Brutal Ring Christmas Special was playing on their rarely-used television. Haoyu had declared the watching of it an official Bromelimas tradition. He said he was sure Instructor Waker was going to be one of this year’s surprise guests in the holiday matches because he’d overheard him saying, “Ho-ho howdy! I’ll jingle your bells!” to himself.

That was in keeping with the tone of the Christmas show.

“I think that kind of summoning sounds perfect, too,” said Haoyu. “I’m a tiny bit jealous you asked Kon instead of me.”

“I’m sorry. The next time a wizard’s wand breaks, I’ll tell them to call you. To fix it. With your Boxing Gloves.”

“On second thought…don’t do that.”

“You sure?”

Haoyu laughed. When he wasn’t commenting on what was happening on tv, he was making an ornament out of a toilet paper tube. He said the origami instructions Alden was following were too confining for his creativity.

Lexi had been trying for ages to use Writher to cut a single snowflake out of a piece of paper.

“Dream trip for a lot of people,” Lute said. “No wonder Kon’s thrilled. Go fix something. It takes minutes, then they let you hang out and go shopping with a friend.”

He was showing off his ridiculous Chainerness by being better at Alden’s chosen project than Alden himself. It was annoying to watch him glance once at a pattern on his interface and then produce three paper polar bears before the Brutal Ring announcer could finish introducing the next contenders.

So Alden was going for a T. rex. Every Bromelimas tree needed a T. rex.

“I think I’m relieved now that Kon’s done one,” said Lexi. “That doesn’t make sense because this one doesn’t have anything to do with whatever other wizards might want from him in the future. And it probably doesn’t make sense for me to worry in the first place. He gave up on his original plan and picked what has to be a much safer Adjuster path for anything other than hero work.”

“You should worry more about what wizards will ask you to do,” Lute said. “You went for an evil whip.”

“I know. My mom points that out every time I complain about Kon changing his whole plan at the absolute last second. Sometimes I think he flies around like a fart in a room full of Sky Shapers just to stress me out.”

Writher left a scorched spot on his snowflake cut, and he hastily set the whip aside.

“Anyway, this was a good one for him. Tell me the truth, though. Did he ask for an enchanted cup only he can use instead of normal, practical argold?” Lexi was looking at Alden.

The T. rex almost lost a leg.

“I have no comment on Kon’s business,” Alden said. “You must ask the man himself.”

In truth, he had no comment because he wasn’t sure if Kon was brushing aside this question when others asked. The more honest answer—that the trip wasn’t considered an official summoning—would have been fine to give, in Alden’s opinion. But wasn’t there a chance Kon was letting everyone assume it had counted as an official one…because he was trying to obscure the truth about being unsummonable?

Alden needed to ask exactly what Kon had told others. And what Mehdi knew from hearing just Kon’s side of the conversation right before he’d been teleported.

Shortly after the Brutal Ring special ended, the Bromelimas tree was finished. They had an argument over which of them had done best while they placed extra origami polar bears all over the apartment.

Haoyu was trying to win by pointing out that his bromeliad was what made it a Bromelimas tree in the first place.

Alden thought the dinosaurs and ryeh-b’ts attacking toilet paper roll Nautilus Needle were the obvious choice.

Lute was advocating for quantity of ornaments contributed.

And Lexi was pretending he was too mature to care.

While Alden lined up polar bears on the living room windowsill, he spotted someone in a black hoodie leaving the girls’ building. She wasn’t facing him, but he thought it was Maricel. He almost texted her, then stopped himself.

A couple of abrupt responses to his last messages, a couple of times when they’d passed on campus and she’d seemed to be actively not noticing him…

“Is Maricel still in the news a lot?” he asked. “I haven’t been keeping up with everything.”

Haoyu was putting a bear in the freezer. “Not as much on Anesidora, but I heard she’s doing some call-ins for programs in other countries. And EarthBox has her on their wraparound screen now. The one that celebrates Ground Shapers making a difference? It’s awesome. She’s the only teenager on it, and she’s twenty meters tall. Vandy said they pulled her out of class for the photoshoot.”

So she’s got a lot on her plate, lots of people vying for her attention, and a lot on her mind.

Those were good enough reasons. He suspected they weren’t the main reason, though. There was tension in him knowing that her new model globie status was built on such an edited version of events that it was almost a lie. Only a little tension for him, but presumably it was more for her.

Whatever’s up, she clearly isn’t eager to talk to me. And she hasn’t mentioned my name in the press or anything like I was worried about. So…ball’s in her court.

They’d have gym together again next month if she didn’t choose Elites.

Gym.

“No duels this week,” he said, placing the last bear in its herd.  Pack? Bear group. “Not one-on-ones anyway. Foxbolt told me.”

“Good,” said Haoyu.

“Good,” Lexi agreed. “There are a few people who really… ”

“I never have duels,” said Lute. “Instead, I have sense.”

“It sounded like Foxbolt thought we’d do them in one more class before the end of term, though.” Alden walked over to look at the tree again.

“All bros must help mist the bromeliad without getting the paper ornaments wet,” Haoyu said from the other side. “Tradition number eleven.”

Alden smiled. “I didn’t consider that.”

“I did,” said Lute. “I just assumed four Avowed should be able to figure out how to water a plant successfully.”

“This is seriously the best Christmas tree I’ve seen,” said Alden, reaching for the first paper star he’d placed on it and bringing it closer to the front. Since I was really young.

On Monday, at the end of Engaging with the Unexpected, he told Instructor Marion he wasn’t going to share his Thegund experience for credit next quarter. He felt like he could do it now, but not without coming to resent certain class members more than they deserved.

“I’ve sent an application to the volunteer department at the healing hospital,” he said to Boe when they talked that afternoon. “If they say yes, I’ll make that my project.”

A couple of minutes later, when Alden tried to jump from that topic to the one they’d set aside on Saturday night, Boe performed a verbal dodge.

I’ll pretend I didn’t notice it.

What Boe was going to do in the future, and why he was even thinking of living in a city where other high ranks could run into him on the street, didn’t seem to have easy answers for him.

And so far this year, he had been to Alden’s funeral, jumped in and out of catspace multiple times, punched through a brick wall, and ended up naked in a rainforest during an evacuation he didn’t know was happening.

He deserves some time to deal.

“You’d like the inward path,” Alden said. “The healer can use it to make your thoughts clearer and give you enough distance to look at them. And there’s this weight on your mind that calms you down, and…it encourages you to find the things that are actually true for you and that actually matter to you. The weight’s heavy, so the bullshit in my head can’t lift it. Only the real stuff gets through. So I find out what the real stuff is.”

“That sounds…”

Alden smiled and nodded at him.

“…fucking terrifying.”

“No! I mean, it was at first. But it’s been so good for me already!”

“I can tell. I think.”

“Wow, that was hesitant.”

“Maybe I’d like it if I was alone with it,” Boe said. “Not with someone else there listening to my real stuff. I’m glad it works for you. It was…nice…of your friend to introduce you to the healer.”

“I bet you could like him, too, if you tried. He’d probably enjoy talking to you if you ever wanted.”

The conversation paused there.

Alden had a moment with the taco bowl he was eating at his desk. He was trying to make it last for as long as he could stand. Natalie had sent seven nutritious meals and a tub of extra guacamole over by drone. Cinnamon rolls to follow.

[So they’re wizards with skills. The generals or knights or whatever translation is best,] Boe sent. [They’re…sort of like you. In that way.]

[In that way,] Alden agreed.

[Stuart’s one of them?]

[Going to be in the future. Probably.]

He had time to take a few more slow bites before Boe said anything else.

[You can’t be thinking of telling him. What if he tells others?]

[He really might. He has oaths to uphold. That’s why I haven’t told him.]

Boe looked pale.

[I’ve got a long time to think.] Seven or eight months was less time than he’d wanted. [Don’t look so freaked out. I know I’m still settling in. I know how extreme the consequences of telling anyone could be for me. And right now I really value control of my own life more than ever before.]

[You told me.]

Alden winced. [While I had a breakdown. Sorry about that again. You’re you, though. Of course I told you.]

[I’m glad you told me,] Boe typed. [But I’m not sure you should have.]

Alden stared at him.

[I’m now a major weak point for you. I have no intention of betraying you, but I screamed at Jeremy and accidentally outed myself as an Avowed to him a few months ago. And I never, ever planned to do that. Think about that…and figure out how to do the secrecy contract when you can.]

******

On Tuesday, Alden made Liam Long’s year by asking him for a favor. He hoped Liam believed him when he said this would not be a regular occurrence.

He also practiced spells that afternoon, tried to pick up a puddle correctly with Haoyu’s help, and received a call from the volunteer coordinator at the hospital.

He told Stuart about all of it on a video call that lasted for over an hour.

“The project for Instructor Marion’s class is supposed to be something outside of our comfort zone,” he said. “I honestly don’t think helping out there will be for me, but that’s why I wanted to give some of my time to it. I want to see what it’s like to work in a House of Healing. Maybe just because of my mother. It feels like it might be part of my choosing season.”

“I’ll contemplate that,” Stuart said.

“Is my volunteer work really worth your contemplation?”

“Yes.”

Alden thought about it. “That’s nice to know. Healer Yenu sent me a message. We decided to meet on Thursday. You don’t have to come with me if you’re busy.”

“I’d like to go and use the inward path myself,” said Stuart. “I look forward to seeing you.”

“Great! Me too.”

******

On Wednesday, the bokabv mother had her calf.

To Alden’s shock, Rel-art’h called and asked if he wanted to see the new life before both animals were sent back to join their herd. Since Stuart had told him Alden needed a bokabv for mind healing, he was taking it seriously.

The Rapport school teacher also took Alden’s class schedule more seriously than Alden did and insisted on knowing exactly when he’d be done with every last instructor before selecting a time for his teleport.

So Alden attended all his classes, including gym, then rushed to his room. He packed his suitcase and went back to Artona I a little earlier than he’d planned.

EVENING SOUP!!!???!??!!!

WhisperOfLife

Early chapter?! Thank you for the boon!

Glitter Rabbit (C)

*squints eyes* that's a lot of days passing in a single chapter. What is Sleyca brewing in the sour cauldron of her mind?

Jason Harpster

How many superheros does it take to water a plant.....the world may never know!

Sinnohan

Evening Soup!!!!

Jeremy Goldberg

I wonder if Ryada showed Rel-arth Alden’s letter. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was involved in trying to help her.

Jim

Thank you! Oh man, missed opportunity to see Rel-art'h General #! Is Alden still visiting the siblinghold over the weekend?

PeasOfCrab

Thanks for the early chapter.

Gaffer

An unlooked-for treasure! So how many knights have Alden’s number now/have called him? Quiet rabbit, my butt. Hmmm, perhaps these could be a series of short chapters named Gulp I, II, III to match narrative style with the title ala Hopping/Flashes (and Kon’s Kup)

Robert Mullins

Need to stop and catch my breath. 4 soup days in one chapter got me all out of sorts.

Chris Phillips

I don’t remember Liam Long and the favors he does

J Reynolds

Amazing early souptastic bounty!

Robert Mullins

He's the owner of tiny snake, Alden met him in his dungeon during the waves arc.

Elli

Oooo the tease! What favor did Alden ask of Liam Long? Help training? Fear conditioning? Fun tease!

Elle

chapter!

Gregory

I can understand why Alden doesn't want to share his experience with the class. He'd have to edit out a lot of parts that were very important to him, and some people in that class can be real jerks. The upside is he would share some of the troubles he had, which would help with the people who see only the benefit and not the cost, but still, probably not worth it. I suspect that working in a hospital and dealing with superpowered injuries will include a lot more Unexpected than Alden is currently expecting. It is an excellent fit for his skill, but the amount of medical work he did at Leafsong sounded quite trivial overall. Stuart's leg was the most dramatic and things can get a lot worse than that.

David

“ I know how extreme the consequences of telling anyone could be for me.” I really don’t think you do, Alden! Let alone what it means for the rest of humanity. I don’t think anyone does. The only one who might is Mother, and her thought process is literally incomprehensible. You should still do it, though. For science.

Jim

That we know, only Emban and Evul, and now Rel. Possibly Lind and Esh. He's going for the Art'h collection. Hopefully someday Alis and Jeneth. But he also has calls to and from a number of wizards. Orlon-mom, Healer Yenu, Joe, Zeridee as well as writing to the squad.

Matt

I've made toilet roll ornaments before. They come out great!

WhisperOfLife

Edit suggestions: >[In that way,] Alden agreed. Probably remove the comma or put it after the bracket? I think this is trying to imitate quotation grammar, but since it's a text message it feels off.

Ploddingpanda

Thanks for the chapter! Wow, speeding from Sunday to Wednesday in one chapter!

Christine

Very nice. A slice of life chapter with slow character/plot development sprinkled in. Alden is finally getting confronted with how different his view of friendship and trust is from Boe's. Boe has steeped in paranoia for long that he doesn't trust anyone with secrets if he can help it and thinks Alden should be the same. Meanwhile, Alden is focused on actually healing himself and letting go of his own paranoia because he recognizes that the fear he feels prevents him from moving forward. Alden is choosing caution instead of fear, but that's something Boe cannot understand. As this choice becomes more solidified in Alden's mind, maybe it will embolden him to trust Stu enough to tell him? I think the widening gap between Alden and Boe could provide fertile soil for the growth of Alden and Stu's friendship. Boe is the only friend that Alden's told his secret too, and it's clear that they understand each other less than Alden thought.

Lystic

Two. One to message Njeri and invite her over, share some magical Bromelimas guacamole, and ask her to carefully mist the tree.

Dax

This one did feel a little more bulletpointy at the end than usual

Amber Gregory

It was a boys chapter and I loved it. I loved being annoyed at Lute because he's good at crafts and music. I loved Lexi caring about his younger brother. I loved Haoyu being a little jealous. I just love Boe and Stu. I feel like I'm permanently bleeding a little for Boe and Alden who have to work out everything by themselves, with no parents to love and protect them. I need Boe to be ok but I can't see any path for that right now. I love the seriousness Stu applies to all his thinking and how good that is for Alden, who has serious decisions to make too. I am scared for all of them for the next time Sleyca's evil author streak decides to show up and do terrible things to them.

PeasOfCrab

Alright, here's my bold prediction. Stu is not gonna be there. He's either taking care of studies or votary duties and potentially doesn't even know Alden's visiting Rapport I. There's gonna be a thematic connection between the baby calf and how it's being loved/protected and how Stu's parents/siblings feel about him, which connects back to Herdcreatures. And it's during this time that they try to bring Alden on to their side in order to dissuade Stu.

KB

Where is Alden storing the 7 Natalie Choir meals? Is it a communal fridge? How do we trust that Lute will not eat the magic food?

KB

I mean, Lute wouldn't eat the food on purpose. He would just think, "One pinch won't hurt," but we know how it would go from there.

DAK

Brutal Ring Christmas Special. Oh yeah. It just warms my heart to see that alternate universe magical 2040 is still reaping the glorious benefits of high quality exported American culture!

Robert Mullins

Readers: "Whelp, affixation is 8 months away in story. Calculating trajectory puts that at 83K years until it gets written. I hope Sleyca has good writing genes so her descendents can continue the story." Sleyca:*frowns.* Sleyca:*Glances at notes for 3 chapter mini arc of Big Snake and Ghosten eating BBQ for 20 minutes and sighs.* ..... 2 weeks later..... Readers: "wow, 3 days in one chapter? I don't know if I can handle this. Think of all the things we just missed. What about Gym?" Sleyca:*Flips Table*

Llainway

Thanks for the chapter!

MWF

The landscaped areas of the parking lot of my workplace were populated by baby killdeer birds last summer and now Mama and Papa killdeer just got back so I think there will be more chicks this year too. They're such cute little things, like puffballs with legs power walking all over the place. I guess my point being that im having a weird moment of feeling very in tune with Alden. He gets to see a baby bokabv soon and I get to see baby killdeer soon (fingers crossed).

MWF

Also it's kinda interesting that Marciel seems to be taking the road not traveled with capitalizing on media presence as a ticket home. I hope that works out for her, but if she's avoiding Alden despite him probably being her closest friend on campus I'm going to guess not. To borrow and mangle a quote "sometimes the mental walls we build to keep things out are the only things holding us up" and that seems like a bad strategy for someone who desperately needs emotional support.

Doug Wills

I don't feel there really is much of a widening gap between Alden and Boe, nor should it be necessary for Alden and Stu's friendship to grow. Certainly they differ in regard to secrets, but they've been talking more lately, discussing important things together, and approaching things that are difficult for Boe. That doesn't imply a widening or distancing between them. At some point Alden will likely be insistent in some way or another. That may go poorly, or he may get through to Boe in that regard. It feels like some kind of argument/conflict is bound to happen, but knowing Alden he'll be very insistent on fixing anything than he will take it as space he can use to replace Boe. And as much as Boe is super crazy paranoid, he's largely been fairly honest with Alden about things. They have plenty to talk about, but I really hate the viewpoint that some gap in one important friendship should make room for another. I think that's fairly counter to both real life experience and the way this story has handled almost anything.

Terrestrial_Biped

Maybe something from Liam's sister? Tina Long is and Adjuster who can pair items. She made a low-bandwidth magic communication device by pairing scratch cards so a message scratched on one could be read on the other, and comms with her brothers by pairing earrings. Not sure what that'd do for Alden, but maybe to make some kind of gift for Stu?

Chas Becht

"Lute was advocating for quantity of ornaments contributed." Feels slightly off. Maybe "..advocating for the idea that quantity of ornaments contributed."

Robert Mullins

Nah, he was advocating for quantity of ornaments contributed as the ranking used to determine who did the best job on the tree.

Christine

Thats because the time skips in this story have become increasingly rare since Alden made it back from Thegund. Sleyca's trying to let time pass! Let her have it without complaint. We'll make it to the new year in-story someday, maybe before the end of next year irl!

Christine

I just realized Stu said that he would contemplate Alden volunteering in a hospital right after the chapter where Stu was contemplating Alden's involuntary drugged up experience at the hospital at Lifesong University... hopefully Stu's contemplations lead him to the realization that Alden is not overly traumatized by Stu's mishnen incident!

Christine

Anesidora privilege: taking only the best parts from each country's holiday traditions

Casey

The T-rex is my favorite!!! I like to imagine it is the "star" of the tree! I laughed so hard at that :)

Gaffer

JennP

Uh-oh. Is Rel-Arth gonna... express his displeasure with Alden over that thing Alden said...?

JennP

Don't irritate Sleyca. What if she adds another skip day?

Robert Mullins

Time for the glorious return of English language specialist Quinyeth-Wit?

GWJ

I wonder if Rel-Art’h is making an opportunity to convince Alden to join the Stuart For Votary club

Alex Scriber

I really like how time advanced this chapter. Thank you!

Memoryofgold

If this were a more typical fantasy/sci-fi about an alien empire arriving on Earth, Boe would totally be right about his fears.

Lyssur

A busy chapter events-wise! Lexi's getting used to Alden's... eccentricities. He didn't even blink when considering that Kon was allowed to wander on Artona I with Alden supervising. He's such a good roommate. I wonder if the favor from Liam has something to do with the secrecy contract. Just the juxtaposition of the scenes. We have Boe asking for Alden to figure it out as soon as possible, so.... I am just really curious for him to figure it out- a return of the gremlin, Boe and Alden's secrets more secure, more about U-types and Boe's past- as well as maybe more future more contracts! So many possibilities. Maricel is uncomfortable to think about- by setting her up as the model globie now Anesidoran media darling, she is being so alienated from her peers. Especially sad since she was fitting in well before, and making friends. I bet she goes to Elites. She's been wanting to get powerful to take back control of her life, and now she has less control than ever, with feeling more in the spotlight and wanting to hide. I guess since Stu has his Evul tablet (and is being a votary), he has more time to chat. We're going to see the bokabv again! Alden thinks it funny that Rel-art'h is taking Stu's comment that the bokabv is important for his healing seriously... but, it is? It's helped him a lot- I bet seeing mama bokabv (and baby) will help him even more, as contrast to his dreams.

ghostb1tch

Alden having all of these invitations and wizards reaching out to him makes me think about Elias watching Kon badly lie about how unimportant Alden’s Artonan friends are lol I’m almost excited for when Elias does figure it out, because as much as Elias has a lot of sway on Earth, Alden’s friends are /much/ more important in the context of the broader universe. I lowkey hope he gets a lil freaked out when he figures it out. I was thinking about how if this were a planned series vs. a serial webnovel, there might be an estimated amount of “books” or something, but because if how this is written/released, I’m pretty sure any timeline is uhh, flexible? I’m not upset about that but I do have a fear (born from years of reading) that eventually Sleyca (if you’re reading this you’re amazing and I love this story so much) will get tired of writing it and will drop it, and we might never know about Gorgon’s history, or understand more about chaos, or see a conclusion to Boe’s current character path, or see more of the broader universe, etc. I’m not upset about the lace things are going at, though—I absolutely love slice of life with a good mixture of introspection, relationship and character development, the good angsty stretches and the long periods of fluff and world building in between. I guess if it doesn’t get finished, I’ll still be happy for having read it and enjoyed such a colorful and fascinating universe. 💚🩵💛

Matt V

Did Alden remember to pick up honey for Quinyeth? She will be so disappointed if he forgets. She may lose her love of humanity - or at least of this one human.

Matt V

Anyone remember where we are on the timeline? Is the upcoming weekend his originally scheduled stay at the Rapport? I assume that's still happening, but given that he's already formally met the family not sure if there will be anything of significance - maybe more Emban/Blithe/Ryada interaction? Before that, though, anyone else think the invite from Rel is sus? Something tells me Stu was deliberately not informed, and Rel is hoping to steal an opportunity to talk to Alden without him around. My money is on this teleport taking him directly to the Rapport school instead of the art'h siblinghold. And Rel will shortly be singing the praises of life as a votary to what he is hoping is an impressionable ryeh-b’t. Cue polite devastation rabbit.

Robert Mullins

Yes, today is Wednesday in soup, Thursday is next Healer meeting that was just scheduled, and the weekend is the original rapport trip date, which will still be happening but with an altered itenerary. The only thing we know will happen is Stu explaining the meaning behind the symbol on his journals/clothes

Andrew Tobin

Awesome addition as always heart-emoji.gif I do think if you can take the day of rest, and bank the chapter for when you may need another, you should go ahead and do so. It's within rules for the contact with the readers and banking extra chapters for rainy days sounds good.

C. Adkins

Everyone asked for a time skip haha this might’ve been the longest one in a hundred chapters

ThoMiCroN

Alden should offer Stuart these figure toys of Earth animals. It would be a great way to teach him about Earth.

Overwhoot

Rel is sneaky, is the problem. Alden is so excited to engage with mind healing in a normal way and see Stuart, and then Rel is going to make delicate, and then less delicate insinuations that Alden needs to convince Stu to abandon his path. It's going to be continually heartbreaking to see how little Stu's family thinks of him. Or perhaps, how much they are willing to sacrifice, even if that sacrifice is Stu's happiness.

Seriously

i can only pray all future mentions of gym class remain this long. most excellent.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

Good noticing! Stuart already has Alden hospital stuff in his contemplations, and this fits right in. I had considered how Alden's mention of his mother might relate to Stuart, and didn't think beyond that to how this project connects to Stuart's previous contemplations. The more we learn about Stuart, the more the idea of "engaging with the unexpected" obviously resonates with him. He has learned that normal bad truths feel unexpected to him (and only him? Or is that normal for all of us?), and he has committed to engaging with them regardless. Hospitals are a place where not everything is most beautiful, and there's a lot to learn regarding facing the reality of pain.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

I'm not biased at all here, but hear me out: You know how Alden using his fundamentally protective skill as, instead, an offensive hero skill, is helping him push the skill and grow it and level fast? And then when he does use it as intended, it's duper super by-my-powers strong? When Writher cuts beautiful snowflake art, it is proof that Writher is the best and strongest. Just sayin. (...Both Lexi and Alden are using their skills in alignment with *themselves*, even when it doesn't seem to fit with what the creator of the skill intended for it. But it's the right choice for them, and leads to better growth for them.)

Jeff Petkau

Ah, but if that happens, Alden will have an opportunity to deploy his ultimate weapon: Devastating Politeness. Rel-arth has no defense against that.

Vancouver

Given that we had two gym classes pass, I'm surprised we didn't hear about what Kon has been saying so Alden can align his story.

puppy0cam

Time for Alden to show off his skills at handling alien kindergartners.

gostsamo

I'd vote that you take a break. I've read this chapter twice and on both occasions it felt much more like a retelling rather than a proper part of the story. If relaxed and unhurried is what lets you expand on these episodes, relax and unhurry yourself.

Robert Mullins

Personally like the chapter as is. Expanding on the scenes here wouldn't really buy us anything and the story will make good use of the skip ahead. There's still plenty of things to cover ahead and there's a difference between stopping to smell the roses and getting lost in the weeds.

Eleeyah

> Seven or eight months was less time than he’d wanted. Huh, do I remember completely wrong, or did Stu not say 10 *days*?

WannaBeATree

Last chapter Sleyca commented, that they'll clear it up for Royal Road release. I was confused about the timeline as well. Glad it was mentioned this chapter. :)

Christopher

“I think that kind of summoning sounds perfect, too,” said Haoyu. “I’m a tiny bit jealous you asked Kon instead of me.” Shouldn’t he be envious instead of jealous? He wants what Kon had, he’s not afraid that Kon is going to take something of his.

WhisperOfLife

Looked at the timeline to check and you're right, it's been the longest one since Ch. 104, almost 150 chapters and 1.7 irl years ago. Although I guess even this wasn't even a timeskip, just recap-style overviews. We're still going strong on the record of every in-story day being covered in a chapter for the past 33 days

Joseph Collins

Hey, you should take a second skip day anyway - if you don't want to use it as a break, then use it as an opportunity to increase your backlog. Make life a little bit easier on yourself.

WannaBeATree

I think the favor from Liam might involve an iron maiden and maybe a bit of drowning ... in spiders. You know, to be a bit uncomfortable. Ich think Alden should have just went to parties instead. :D Probably more uncomfortable than what Liam has in his torture room. Maricel is kinda alienating herself though? At first I didn't understand why Alden decided to not reach out, but I kinda get it now. He can't read minds to decide if Maricel just wants someone to refuse her refusal for help. So he settels for being available, open-minded and let her have space. Not taking any extra burdens himself, but not saying no, when they come at him. This chapter and the stuff Kon shared kinda reminded me of hacking. Do humans try to hack artonan computers and steal data? No way noone has tried, right? Or is there like a magic firewall equivalent, that is 100% foolproof? Could some wrigths go around or punch through it? Is all their data routed through the system? Not sure if the bokabv was some kind of joke or not, if I am honest. It sounds like both an excuse to invite Alden, as well as a potentialy very serious mind healing event.

WannaBeATree

Boe is part of a secret group of people and has powers to know private things about anyone he wishes in his vincinity. He is also very smart. Despite my feelings, I logically know that it would be unwise to dismiss his suggestions, since he knows thing we don't. It is just really hard to keep it in mind.

Guus van der Borg

That distinction between the words is something Simpsons made up. Officially, there's no actual distinction between those two words. So either one works.

Andrew Simpson

Jfc we have 9 months until Alden tells stu? I don't even think it's been 9 months since thegund.

Andrew Simpson

Tbh, I'm surprised we haven't gotten any real updates on gym. I know sleyca doesn't actually like writing action scenes, but I was surprised that we more or less skipped the duels and just got a recap afterwards when Alden was describing stuff.

Jazehiah

Do humans understand the importance of Knights? Neha recognized that "numero quatro" was a big deal, but she didn't seem to know why Alis was important or what the number meant. I don't know that Alden's even thought too hard about it.

WannaBeATree

I think the character are recovered enough to be broken again, personally speaking. ;P I hope Stu finds some new truth for himself, thinking about the things Alden mentioned about his mother and how they affected his wishes and/or feeling. Also his desire to try doing the things, he thinks he dislikes.

Between Nov 2023 and Nov 2024 this story took entirely place in Nov 2040

Lololol, though the same xD didn't have a chance to show off with Stuart's niece

John D Jones

I kind of hope something like that happens. It would give Alden the opening to state "You do realize that by failing to support Stu-art'h in this, you make it more likely that he'll eventually commit suicide by tree, right?"

John D Jones

Alden is a human. Humans "can't" be wizards. Votaries have to be wizards.

I hope we get a classmate pov of the gym locker room so we can hear their thoughts on Alden's weekend. it would probably have to be a flashback at this point, but I'm interested in what they have to say

Who is Liam Long again? What kind of favor would Alden ask him and why would that make Liam's year?

Is it a pack or a herd of bears?

TWO HUNDRED FORTY-FIVE: Bros, a Bromeliad, and Bear Bros

BelligerentGnu

Boe, you are such a fucking drag these days. Alden inches ever closer to sharing, though.

Garrett

I don’t know what a group of bears is actually called, but in my heart, I call it a cuddle. As in, a cuddle of bears. Edit: Apparently, a pack of bears can be called a pack, maul, sloth, or sleuth. The more you know.

Vancouver

Yes! I don't think we need more gym class scenes itself, but locker room talk probably would be very cool and be informative.

Alden: "So I have an unusual favor to ask, and I know it's going to sound weird but I promise it's important to me for... long-considered personal reasons..." Liam Long: "No problem buddy, I owe ya one. Anything for my best new pal on the 'pex." Alden: "So... do you think you could hold me down and force feed me a rack of ribs? Just a little?" Liam Long: "Oh dope, you want to come to Force Feeding Friday? That's awesome! We do it every other week, so come on by the new torture chamber next week." Alden: *sighs in relief* Liam Long: "...I just forwarded you the calendar invite. Anyway, what was the weird favor you wanted to ask about?"

For my part, Sleyca, I say take a skip day Sunday or Thursday. I say that partly because it's good to maintain a monthly pattern but partly because next week I'll be traveling with limited internet so I won't be able to consume any Soup until maybe Friday or Saturday of next week.

PeasOfCrab

Take the skip day, Sleyca! If you get good work done, you can toss the chapter on the backlog! Build, build, build, backlog! *dancing around the spot the backlog stack grows*

happypotamus, The Bearer of All Bananas

I really think Alden is going to reveal his authority sense to Stu soon (in story time). There's a concept in music of 'structural playing,' meaning to perform with a sense of the whole work (see [1]). Sleyca is a master of the equivalent for fiction. It's clear, in hindsight at least, that each chapter is written with knowledge of where the story's going and has a purpose in telling the story. We're off to Artona I next because that's where the story told so far needs to be, and the story told so far likewise needs Alden to tell Stu. Not necessarily immediately, but in the next few weeks. We give Sleyca a bit of a hard time sometimes for the speed at which in-story time passes, but the plot continues to advance steadily. Sleyca is a masterful writer, but I don't know if even she can keep it interesting for much longer to see Alden continue to learn spells by himself and agonize over whether to tell Stu. So much agonizing has already happened - there just can't be many more paths through the already churned earth. So let's review what's happened recently. We've had the Here-To-There, which was ostensibly about the journey of moving some Artonans from A to B but was, for the purposes of the story, more about Alden's journey in coming to terms with telling Stu about his wizardhood [2]. Although Alden is "There," we've been on Artona I for 20 chapters and need a break, and the in-story characters need to sleep. So we bounce back to Earth, catch up with the Rabbits, resolve a few plot points, and keep alive a few more. But we're still looking ahead to the next arc. In 242, we get a scene reminding us how alike Alden and Stu and, cleverly told via a conversation between Cly and Hannah, dredged up by the Informant. We then see Alden write his thoughtful letters to the Knights. Then we get 244, the first non-flashback chapter told in Stu's perspective. Then we come to this chapter, the final chapter of an interlude between arcs set on Artona I. We check in with roommates, borrow something from Liam's sister so that Stu can communicate to Alden when on Artona I, and sow some seeds about Maricel to set up an arc that will happen in 2029. But we're not going to dwell on Mehdi or gym or Alden dealing his email. We also get a conversation with Boe reminding us of the stakes. I think that I'm supposed to count this conversation as evidence against my hypothesis of Alden telling Stu soon, but I did notice the wording. It would perhaps have been more natural for Alden to provide reassurance to Boe that he's not going to tell Stu soon, but that's not what he says: He instead provides reassurance that he understands the stakes. So Alden is There and next chapter he'll be there on Artona I, and I'm super excited for what happens next. Footnotes ------------ 1. Here's a great video about 'structural playing' in piano, which explains how Yunchan Lim won the Cliburn competition at 18: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhUFLepewgA&t=274s 2. Suggest rereading the Here-to-There arc with the mindset that it's about Alden's journey. I'll get you started: In 219, we see the concern that Alden has with being discovered when Esh and Lind's warm vibes interact with him. Esh says > “I hope they’re mature enough to handle that sincerity. If not, they might rip away each other’s shade leaves without being prepared for all that can be known in harsh light.” 220 reinforces how much Stu cares about Alden. Stu arranging an opportunity for sleep and procures him an inhaler. We learn about < < open—specifically in reference to the ability of a person to welcome another’s authority without distress > >ness and < < charming—specifically in reference to a person’s ability to interact with and influence another’s existence without causing discomfort > >ness, and the positive effects of authority bonding relating to affixation. The chapter title is "A Rare Pairing," which ostensibly refers to Emban and Ryada, but actually is referring to Stu and Alden. In 221, we find out how important friendship is to Artonans, complete with multiple oaths planned by Stuart. Alden muses > "me being able to do magic like a wizard isn't being taken into consideration. He can't take it into consideration because I haven't told him." In 222, we get another failed attempt to tell him > “Stuart, I… ” > > The sentence he’d begun had no sane ending. What? What was he trying to say when there was so much he shouldn’t say? In 223, Alden stresses about getting along with the other knights and we get another failed attempt: > Stuart?” > > “Yes?” > > _Show me the shade spell again sometime_, thought Alden_. Slowly. I couldn’t hear you clearly or see everything you did with your hands._ > > Was he really just going to ask that? > > “Thank you again for the shade,” said Alden. In 224, we get the skill instruction with authority assist. In 225, we find out that the size of Stu's authority is not that far different from Lute's and therefore not that different from his own. Many of the commenters say that Alden has to catch up with Stu, but from my perspective they're about as close as they could have been: it would be weird if Stu was smaller than Lute and it could have been so much worse: Stu is the son of the Primary. Mathematically, you'd expect that the Primary is Primary because he's abnormal in gradient rather than intercept, but soup math is sometimes surprising. Alden continues to agonize: > _It felt good. And it felt good for me._ > > _I liked it. But there’s no way I can reciprocate for now. Let’s leave that…_ > > _For now? Did I really just think that?_ etc. etc. I have to go to bed.

Alden doesn't know it's a sloth of bears? Another failure of the US education system.

Not related to this chapter, but on a (4th) reread of the story, I was noticing that in ch 77, Arjun Thomas tells the evaluators and instructors talking about Alden's CNH application that “He knew what the skill was before he chose it.” Officially, Alden was letting people think he chose Rabbit, had Thegund happen, and then changed his mind about his future and wanted to be a superhero because of Thegund. Arjun probably guessed he knew the skill because he knew Alden wanted to be an Adjuster superhero growing up and wanted to be like Hannah. And his skill is a lot like Hannah's spells. Arjun then says "I don’t know it for a fact, but it would be a shock to me if he’d accidentally acquired a skill with that sort of effect. " And Arjun Thomas was a *Chicago city hero.* If he tried to figure out why a Chicago kid could have ended up with knowledge about a skill no one had ever taken, I wonder if he could guess? Gorgon's existence at the consulate is common knowledge. Not that it's necessarily likely, but I wonder if Arjun might ever think of Gorgon and wonder? Anyway, now I'm just curious how many people realize that Alden being a Rabbit is weird mystery about Alden. Cly Zhao definitely knew Alden's adjuster superhero goals and might have known something about Gorgon from Hannah, though less likely she'd put it together. Maybe she would attribute the Rabbit thing to Hannah being probably-dead, making Alden give up on that dream? Also, on the CNH combat assessment day, Alden tells Kon that he wanted to be an Adjuster "so bad." Kon asks why he's a rabbit, and he sort of gives a non-answer excuse. I don't think it necessarily left Kon wondering bc Kon supplied his own answer, but who knows what could happen to make him wonder again in the future. And who all has Alden told that being a superhero is an old dream that he doesn't know if he still has anymore? Was it just Maricel? (ch 73 - "I did really want it once. The superhero thing. Maybe I will again.”)

JennP

See, a pack or a maul make sense. But a sleuth? And why would we use the name of an animal to describe a group of other animals? Who actually gets to decide these things? (Besides Merrium-Webster)

JennP

I think he's going super villain. Or crotchety hermit shut-in.

Calibri

Fantastic chapter! I hope we get to hear from Kibby soon

Kim Enteiu

This was so cozy; Alden deserved that chapter.

Sleyca, if you post as many chapter a month as you write, you can never build a backlog. Why skip your skip day instead of just building a backlog? You could post every day and twice on Sunday and I would still want to read more than you're outputting. You're that good. So you might as well post less and build some buffer to smooth the road in the future.

Awesomepossum15

I didn't notice on first read, but we went forward a whole 4 days this chapter, from Sunday to Wednesday night. Break neck pace!

PatienceHoney

I've just started reading your comments and it freaking has footnotes!! Dude!! That is so hard core... okay, back to reading!

Ian T Hathaway

Man, Alden is probably teleported more than half of Anesidora combined. Good for him. But Sleyca,,take your skip day! You deserve time off

Jack Slash

This was a fun way to go through several days at once! And feels like a good transition from HtT to whats coming up next. I saw a few comments about taking a skip day, and I agree — I def want more supsupp but a backlog can be good.

Catherine

Hmm so Rel called Alden directly... what's his Knight number?

GWJ

Just realized Rel-art’h is in perfect position to tell the full story of Sina and Stu. If so, that baby glow-in-the-dark rhino had better poop on somebody hilariously to make up for how much that story’s gonna hurt.

Marlkaz

There is at least the reasonable alternative that since his Mom helped at the House of Healing, an Artonan there might have wanted to help him out. That's enough to explain some extra starting knowledge, and Gorgon's Gift is still a secret between him, Gorgon, Kibby (sort of) and Contract.

IvyRose

I'm sorry, many might disagree, but Boe gives me such bad vibes every time he is in the scene. It just does not seem like things are going to turn out well there.

Anon-Anon

Can't wait to find out what he knows. Especially since the system won't let him say anything without making a contract w Alden first. I think he might know something that makes him more angsty than *just* feeling everyones emotions. Or maybe not, that is a pretty big thing and would annoy the crap out of me too. I do wonder if Alden comes out as a knight publicly—at least on artona I—if he'd get privilege that would allow Boe to tell him without a contract. But, it's hard to say how much leeway the system(s) will give him.

Anthony Lutz

We can only hope that Rel does not try to do anything during this trip that deserves diminished respect. If it does, I hope it's in the presence of others and Alden performs a righteous scholarly exit.

Readers elsewhere online: pls update soon! Sleyca's readers: pls skip a posting day!

MWF

I do think on reread that a minor alteration needs to be made to the "He told Stuart about all of it on a video call that lasted for over an hour." sentence. Considering Alden was practicing spells that afternoon, I rather doubt he told Stuart about *all* the things he did that day.

George Cao

I’m interested in what is happening on earth

WannaBeATree

(If I am being overly pessimistic and/or nihilistic) I imagine paying users like having a stake in a business. Being considerate of the business's long-term profitability in exchange for short-term loss is acceptable. Of course there is also the status difference and potential hero worship. Feeling good about being acknowledged or only looked at. Like feeling good about giving a known millionaire a free coffee. Of course none of it is likely a conscious decision by anyone, but most humans are feelers and don't need a reason beyond: "Doing or saying this feels good and I don't care why."

WannaBeATree

!!! Now I will be super dissapointed if it does not happen. :( Damn you! (I am joking ... somewhat. Awesome idea though!)

Rachel Becker

Haha, on Monday he sends his application to the hospital, on Tuesday the volunteer coordinator calls him. They *keen*!

ghostb1tch

sometimes I log on and then get sad that I already read the chapter lol

Guus van der Borg

People are so busy talking about the skip day that none of them noticed Alden told Stuart he can cast spells off-screen! "He also practiced spells that afternoon, tried to pick up a puddle correctly with Haoyu’s help, and received a call from the volunteer coordinator at the hospital. He told Stuart about all of it on a video call that lasted for over an hour." It says it clear as day! (Yes, this is a joke. Still though, grammatically speaking...)

Gaffer

The actual conversation: “…impressions! I was, er, practicing my spell impressions!” “Ah, good idea” Stu said, “only the wisest Avowed can ever cast spells *harder*”

SFGuru

He is going to get so far ahead of Boe if he does this!

Eva

I was thinking about all the secrets Alden has and who knows about them. 1. His system provided double identity. Only Alden and the system know 2. The real name of his Skill, Bearer of all Burdens. Alden and Joe. And Mother 3. Alden is a Wizard. Alden and Kibby and Boe. I don't think he told Jeremy? 4. The commendation was a secret, but that one's out now 5. Who his wizard friend is. Alden knows, and the Artonans know, but nobody on Earth? I know Boe and Jeremy and the roommates know but not who he is exactly? 6. Who gave Alden the traveller bag? Only Alden and Mother know I'm pretty sure I'm overlooking so much! Help me with the list? Correct my mistakes?

Aspiring Moth

3. Mother/the system also know 7. the events regarding the now dead thieves that attacked zeridee. Only Alden and the system know the full truth of him using an auriad spell. the artonans know most of the truth. humans don't know what happened yet

John D Jones

Probably true. Most of Anesidora's population is required to stay on Anesidora.

Lystic

Has Kon leveled up? Did I just miss/forget it? He seems like he should have leveled up. Between breakthroughs, constant skill use whenever he can, and a difficult object like a wand, it feels like he should have leveled up. Do the wizards that sponsor Kon have a growth path set up for him? Did his skill come with a note saying "please do not bind until X authority and then recommend Y" attached to it? Maybe they have a specific use in mind but need his skill to get super strong. Like read a few years into the past strong. And they just want the system to dump as much into the skill as possible at once to make him grow quickly.

J Reynolds

As of Ch. 157, Maricel, Rebecca and Jeffy leveled. That was a couple of in-story weeks ago. Kon (and others) might have leveled since, but if so, they have not been noted in the narrative.

puppy0cam

I wonder what Elias bargained with the triplanets for them to make use of his keys for the submerger investigation. If I were in his place, I think I would have bargained for exclusivity rights for his skill to allow MBF to designate which human avowed are allowed to affix the skill needed to make the keys. Such an agreement would do excellently at locking down the ability for other people to make spy networks as extensive as MBF while also allowing him to contract out the tedious work of crafting the keys.

J Reynolds

Doing some thinking about small-c contracts. Joe is able to enforce his contract with Alden because: "I am an experienced and powerful wizard. And you’re a clueless fifteen-year-old human. If there’s a disconnect between what I think we owe each other and what you think we owe each other, then my authority over the contract will absolutely crush yours like an insect." Makes me think: If Alden were to figure out how to make contracts, his contract with Boe (for example) would only be as binding as Boe wanted it to be. At least at first. Alden's authority is a fraction of Boe's (and other A-ranks, not to mention S-ranks). If the contractee no longer wanted to be bound by the contract, they could override Alden's puny authority. I suspect that as Alden levels (and presumably ranks) up, his ability to enforce contracts will increase.

Aspiring Moth

I imagine the authority sense would make a big difference in any contest. even if Boe is stronger, Alden can consciously take part in any contest of authority. And also, only free authority should matter for this I would think, since bound authority can't do anything except that which it's bound to do

Joe

I know everyone wants the Alden and Stuart auriad reveal scene. However, I really want Alden to reveal his intensity 99.9 profile to an adult that he can confide in. He needs someone other than Mother to talk to. Not even Boe knows about that profile (not that I believe Boe would be the correct person in the first place). Alden has almost no real mentor and instead has various teachers for simple basic training. I want him to be able to talk with an adult and say, 'hey, here's my real profile and what I'm dealing with. What should I be expecting when everyone finds out about this?' Maybe Esh'erdi can be that person. Neha would have been a good choice if they stuck around more. I don't think that Alden will get there with a CNH adult, especially with his last interaction of knowing that they want to abuse his commendation with the wizards. Big Snake might be an exception, but we don't have enough scenes with him yet. His other classes outside of gym time seem largely worthless (which is ironic since CNH's goal is to show that as a strength vs the Elites program). As a side note, I'm waiting for the Matadore room personalization chapter. That would be a fun break from the main story. I also want the follow-up where Alden makes a brooch from his home tree.

JJ Hunter

Next time Alden sees Porti-loth, he will have multiple things to talk about - watching episodes of Kwoo-pak, planning to volunteer in a human version of a house of healing, how much of an impact *would* that ritually boosted wooden chip have on Alden's peers if he were to bury it outside his dorm room... I am really excited for Alden to pursue working in a human house of healing. Getting a better sense of how potions, spells, skills, and human medicines can work together, what the processes are when emergency teleport by Contract may only give seconds' notice before horrible traumas come in needing immediate ER assistance, whether there are any Artonan healers on permanent staff vs additional wizard volunteers in with the relief group, how many other human student volunteers there are, how much of a backlog there still is from triaging through the recent disaster- so much scope for worldbuilding and new characters and chance encounters with characters previously met in very different circumstances! Definitely agree Alden may find more unexpected conundrums requiring care and steady judgement to navigate than he might expect. Hospitals are places where emergencies come to be resolved; they take on the difficult cases and the complex ones. They fight death and ease birth and help the living reach for thriving.

Elli

I'm hoping for Esh'erdi to become a mentor/father figure for Alden, too. That kid needs a responsible adult who can also be lighthearted. And the Elder's Croak scene showed the potential of that dynamic so beautifully.

Jess

I think most of the informant's bargaining went towards keeping his neighborhood/fiefdom. Before he negotiated with the former ambassador, SkySea was abandoning the area and Elias was ignoring the evacuation order. By the time Lind-otta goes to check in a few scenes later, Elias is still working out of his home and the area is being protected by Artonans. I bet he could have gotten more under other circumstances, but being able to divert a bunch of wizards during a major planetary disaster is still an insane power move.

JJ Hunter

I wonder if Rel-art'h, like Lexi with his brother, is relieved that Stu has successfully completed his first major status exercise in a manner he can be proud of. He's got to be worried about Stu, and the whole situation of Stu's isolation from the peers who would normally be relied on to support him; that's got to drive local school teacher and protective big brother Rel up a wall that he's not been able to steer these unfortunate class dynamics into healthier directions. Does Rel see the concerning signs in Stu's classmates' behavior? Quinyeth getting steered to votary so quickly concerns me; who else besides Stu is getting pressured into paths that may not be their heart's choice?

Alex Scriber

Natalie sent Alden’s food by drone instead of going to see him. Seems like she’s still at least a little upset. Or maybe just trying to set boundaries for herself? “Natalie had sent seven nutritious meals and a tub of extra guacamole over by drone.“

Anthony Lutz

It could be just that Boomtown is inconveniently far away from the CNH dorms when you don't have a Nine Edged Son to commute with, with both of them busy organising a delivery time might be a hassle without a drone. Also, it would be a little funny if those 7 meals are all he gets for his 1000 argold win, Alden just sitting in his room eating a $400 taco bowl.

Guus van der Borg

I just realized Alden had Gym 'off-screen' in that second to last sentence. Which is interesting to me, because there was this whole passage about Maricel and how he'd see her at Gym. Are we to take this as 'Maricel was there, but was still avoiding/not talking to him'? As is the status quo?

PhoenixPax
