Rapport I’s time wasn’t very different from Anesidora’s on that Wednesday, so Alden arrived at the school not long after nightfall. He appeared in the educational summonarium, with its map of the building, the arrivals board overhead, and the descriptions written on the floor beside the summoning areas.

The student benches along the wall of windows were empty, but Rel-art’h stood in front of them. The knight was in a gray uniform, his long black hair kept out of his face by the two jeweled clips he’d worn every time Alden had seen him so far.

“Hn’tyon Rel-art’h.”

Rel had given him permission to use casual address when they were both at the siblinghold, but not elsewhere. Alden thought the formal came more naturally in his case anyway. He’d almost worn one of his pezyvas, like social armor, but since the reason he was here tonight was to spend time with a big, drooly bisonvark he’d left both vests in the suitcase the Artonan was now looking at.

“Thank you for thinking of me before sending the bokabv back. Bokabvs.”

“You’re the reason I acquired them. The students have enjoyed having the mother animal on the grounds, and every year group took turns observing the new life today. Many have benefited. Do you need to carry your bags with you, or would you prefer to leave them here?”

“I’ll carry them.”

One of them likes me, and the other has my learning cushion in it.

“Do you want food or a drink?”

“No. I’ve brought some with me for later.”

“Will something else assist you with your study?”

Alden was reminded of the string of questions and instructions this man had hit him with before he left for his first visit to see Yenu-pezth. “I can’t think of anything else I need.”

Rel-art’h looked him over like he was trying to find something to fix, then said, “Come with me.”

Alden knew the way, but he wasn’t going to tell a knight how to host him. They left the summonarium and followed the same route he’d taken with Stuart on his previous two trips. This was a school night instead of a weekend, and there were students out in the large courtyard at the back of the main building. Three of them were standing with their arms outstretched toward each other, forming a triangle shape as they looked up at a fourth who was rising swiftly into the air.

That’s Quinyeth.

She was in a casual tunic instead of her votary garb, and her pale hair was down…although, down was technically up right now since it was leading the way into the sky like it had gotten the lift from the spell before the rest of her. She waved at a couple of people watching from the upper floors of the student house as she passed. There were lanterns in the courtyard, but she was swiftly moving beyond the reach of their light.

Rel-art’h paused to watch the students. Or he paused to watch Alden watching the students; Alden wasn’t sure which of them had stopped first.

Isn’t she going too high? Of course if she was, Rel-art’h would say something instead of letting her fall to her death. Right?

Alden wondered if she’d shared her honey or if she was keeping it beside her vanilla candle.

“She’s very high,” he said finally.

“Yes, they’ve done the spell well.”

Okay. It’s only me who’s worried about her going splat.

They left before the students noticed them, and they started down the long staircase set into the steep terrain, the steps ahead of them glowing to light their way and then fading behind them.

“Were you worried the students here would open your bag if you left it behind? Normally, I would defend their manners, but it’s so obviously from another world and so interestingly repaired that I think a few of the more curious ones might have been unable to resist if they found it. None of them would have damaged your belongings or the learning cushion my brother gave you, though.”

Alden stopped. Does he have x-ray vision? Did he read my mind? Oh shit, he does do something telepathic. What if…?

Rel-art’h looked back. “Are you coming?”

“Yes.” It wasn’t a confident yes, but his feet started moving again. “How do you…my learning cushion is in my bag. How did you know that?”

I use my learning cushion to study things that aren’t spell books. I don’t even know what spell books are. Science. Engaging with the Unexpected. Intro to Other Worlds. Boring, ordinary classes—

“Evul was teasing Stu about having a second human over every time you come, since the luggage is so large. He told us you take the cushion with you everywhere. Rather proudly.”

“Oh!” Thank you, God. I’m not good enough to avoid thinking wizard thoughts while I’m talking about my wizard cushion. “I don’t carry it everywhere, but I have been carrying it anywhere I think I might have plenty of time to study.”

“I’m glad you value my brother’s gift. I hope you also value the amount of time he finds to spend with you. I thought I was going to have to travel to LeafSong and use <<a kind of spell-resistant glue>> to stick him to his own cushion. He wanted to skip this evening’s special lecture when he found out you were coming here.”

Alden had texted Stuart to let him know Rel-art’h had invited him. “I do value his time. Very much.”

Did he bring it up because he had the impression that Alden didn’t?

“It is not my intention to suggest you do not.”

And now I’m back to thinking he’s reading my mind!

[Hello? You’d tell me if all my secrets were flowing directly into Rel-art’h’s head, wouldn’t you?]

The text he sent to no one received a single word in reply: [Haha.]

She’s laughing at me. That means…I’m safe?

Laughing at his worries, about this at least, would be out of character.

“In the coming years, Stu will be busier. Once he’s settled onto his path, your lives will <<diverge>> more. That was my meaning.”

“They’re already so different nobody takes either of us seriously when we say we’re friends. Soon-friends.”

Rel-art’h’s steps slowed. “I believe most members of our family now understand that Stu’s wanting of a friendship with you is very serious to him. If they also have concerns about the difficulties of such a friendship, those are their feelings to manage. Not something you or my brother should consider much.”

Alden was surprised to hear him say that. He’d assumed Rel-art’h would be someone who thought a wizard and Avowed being friends was too impractical. He’d been the one to ask Stuart about whether he’d had Alden swear to Privacy of the House…which didn’t mean anything, now that Alden reconsidered it, except that Rel-art’h was someone used to making sure others had their business in order, and he was familiar enough with Stuart to know he might not have treated the human visitor the way everyone else thought he should have.

He isn’t exactly saying he approves, though. More like, don’t worry about what’s going on in other peoples’ heads when you’ve got your own thing happening. Maybe?

Alden liked that advice, so he was going to take it that way.

“It’s unfortunate you overheard some of our parents discussing the relationship you two are developing as if it might exist for their advantage.”

“You know about that!”

Rel-art’h sighed. “Stu warned me not to join in plots against you when I spoke to him this afternoon. So I asked him why he thought there were any plots against you.”

That’s one way to handle it, Stuart. Just directly tell any family member that’s going to spend more than a couple of minutes alone with me that you suspect them of plotting.

“I would ask you to excuse the one who suggested the idea, but I can’t think of any reason why you should.”

“I’m not sure which of your parents suggested using me to change Stu’s mind,” Alden said cautiously. “I didn’t recognize their voice. But I understand they’re all trying to take care of him in their way.”

“Their way shouldn’t involve a young guest, an alien, or a person whose healing we’ve helped to arrange. And it was Aymeg who wanted to manipulate you, according to Stu. He has likely been persuaded toward more moderate behavior by the others since then.”

Rel-art’h paused on the next step and pointed up at the sky. The night was clear and full of stars.

“Does your culture observe stars as constellations? I’ve heard humans do.”

Alden stopped beside him. “We do. I know how to identify some on Earth. As individual pictures, though. Not a skystory.”

“One of the skystories from this part of the world starts with that red star. It’s the first spark of fire made by the first wizard. She’s on her hands and knees beside it. And from there, the story is told in this shape.” His finger wove through the air. “About how she almost burned her home forest down and had to learn to be careful with her power. And then, starting from over there is the second story, about how she persuades the people of the forest to trust her again so that she can help them with her magic. I’ll send them to you. If you’re visiting us, you may enjoy learning to read our sky.”

“Do you think Stu can persuade your family to trust him? If he keeps trying.”

The man’s brows rose, and he regarded Alden until Alden found himself resisting an urge to drop his gaze.

“I was trying to guide you away from the realm of our family’s togetherlife by changing the subject. I didn’t expect you to hear a metaphor in my description of the second story.”

“Sorry. It sounded like…” Alden did look away. “The bokabvs are over there. I’ll just head in that direction.”

“Stu speaks as though he has no doubts, doesn’t he?”

Alden turned back to find Rel’s expression a little sadder.

“I don’t think he has any,” said Alden.

“You haven’t known him very long. Or you see only half his truth. He has no doubts about what he wants, but he does doubt his ability to face it. It might be our fault. He built strength while we weren’t watching. Perhaps it was real, and it was enough. But when he showed it to us for the first time, we told him it wasn’t. And he hasn’t been without doubt since then. No matter how much he refuses to acknowledge it.”

“Then why are you all still…why don’t you support him now?”

Anger was stirring. He tamped it down.

“He’ll die.” Rel-art’h didn’t say it with any anger of his own. “You ask questions you can’t understand the answers to. I give them to you because it’s all right if you repeat them to Stu. It doesn’t matter that it was the people he trusts the most who weakened his confidence. What matters is that it is weakened, and we can’t repair it for him. A loving lie is too fragile a <<patch>> for this, now that he’s heard the truth. He has to find some way to shed his own doubt while enduring ours. If he can’t do that, and he chooses to go to his first binding anyway…that’s the outcome we must prevent.”

Alden’s heart was starting to race.

“You’re upset?”

“He deserves better,” Alden said.

Rel-art’h smiled faintly. “I’m afraid to ask whether you mean he deserves better circumstances or better relatives. Whichever it is, it’s fine for the one he weaves friendship with to think it. But don’t gnaw on it now. Let me turn your attention toward what you’ve come to see. The average lifespan of a bokabv is eighteen Artonan years. The calf will be mature when he’s around a year and a half old. In most herds…”

The lecture was more effective at taking the edge off Alden’s mood than he would have expected, even though most of it was information he’d already learned.

A few minutes later, they were both standing at the edge of the grass patch Stuart had grown for the animals. The interesting stick had been removed. Rel-art’h said it was bad for the calf and might make him bond improperly with his mother. Instead, waist-high wooden panels had been set up to keep the little bokabv in, which would also keep his mother where she belonged even if she was large enough to jump them.

Another instructor had cast a spell to concentrate the moon and starlight that fell on this area, solely for Alden’s benefit. And a knight was explaining animal behavior to him so that he could safely enter the temporary pasture if he wanted.

Bokabvs were active whenever they felt like it, not taking Artonan days and nights into consideration. They were both lively right now. Alden was having a hard time catching more than a partial view of the calf since he was under his mother, and they were standing in a mostly untrampled and uneaten area.

She’d coated her offspring throughly with her bioluminescent saliva. He was a glowy little guy.

“How long can I spend here?” Alden asked.

Turning his thoughts from what Rel had said about Stuart to bisonvarks wasn’t going to be an immediate shift.

“The herd keeper expects them to be sent back tomorrow morning. If you think you need more time than that for your mind healing, I can arrange for you to meet another animal.”

Alden shook his head. “No. That’s plenty of time.”

“I’ll be in my office for a while,” said the knight. “You should call if you have any questions or needs. Use the summonarium to travel to the siblinghold when you’re ready.”

“I will. I appreciate the efforts you’ve made for me. Before you go…I do have a question. About demons. I already know, I think, but I wanted to ask anyway.”

Rel-art’h nodded. “Ask.”

“They should be treated the way a person would treat any other living creature, shouldn’t they? An equally dangerous one.” Alden took a breath. “They can feel pain, they can struggle for their lives, and they can be afraid. Some of them. I know they’re not all the same. But if it’s like that, and you treat them like something less…real…because of the chaos…that’s not right.”

“You’ve asked me a question that’s best answered by yourself,” Rel-art’h said after a moment. “I have killed few demons. My skill is for communication and assisting others. I have felt empathy for the things I’ve killed. Others who kill more sometimes protect themselves by feeling less. I understand them, too.”

I see. It’s personal and situational. “That makes sense.”

“Call if you want anything.”

Alden waited until the knight was on the stairs again before he climbed over the fencing and took his seat on the ground. Approaching would make the mother bokabv nervous, but Rel-art’h had said the calf was curious and would eventually come over to see a newcomer on its own if they weren’t too loud and active.

With grass higher than his head, Alden couldn’t see much. He waited, listening to the soft bleating noise the mother was making, almost like she was muttering to her baby, and the occasional thump of the heavy animal taking a step.

The night smelled like grass and funky herdcreature. Alden waited almost half an hour for acknowledgment, but he had a lot on his mind, and it didn’t feel so long. And the acknowledgment, when it came, was brilliant.

A baby bokabv barreled out of the grass right in front of him, waving its snout like, “Wow! Company!” It smashed into him clumsily, then retreated like he was a scary monster who’d somehow forced it to fall all over him. It returned a minute later, only a tiny bit less excited than it had been on its first approach and ran back and forth in front of him, glowing blue with fresh slobber from its mother. It had generously wiped some of that on Alden’s chest when it hit him.

The little animal seemed to be about forty pounds of leg, snout, and enthusiasm. It ran at Alden again and then away before coming back, like it wanted him to play chase.

“I’m not going to do that,” he said, laughing. “Maybe there will be friends for you when you meet your herd tomorrow.”

The calf stopped and stared at him for a few seconds, as if the sound of his voice needed thinking about, and then it went right back to being thrilled it was alive.

Eventually, the mother bokabv came over to see what was occupying her calf, and since Alden had been instructed not to distress her in any way, he held perfectly still while she got him back for dodging her tongue on his last visit.

“You have a real baby now. Lick him. Look at him! He needs yo—yuck. Okay. Okay, this is fine. It’s probably…you have an unlimited supply of drool, don’t you?”

She left him alone when the calf came over for a drink, and he made a slow escape back over the fence.

“You two aren’t ever going to end up like that thing in my dreams,” he said after watching them for a while longer. “You’re not allowed to. You only get to be normal, happy bokabvs. Because I said so.”

He found the red star in the sky.

Because I want it. Because I feel like screaming it at the universe until the universe listens.

Maybe it wasn’t strange that wizards could do magic. Maybe it was strange that everyone else couldn’t.

Right now, Alden almost believed he could cast protection over these two simple, peaceful lives just by flinging his authority at reality and demanding that it be so.

He headed for the stairs instead, still hauling his suitcase. When he reached the school, the students had all gone in for the night, but Stuart was popping out of the door of the summonarium like he was in a hurry to get somewhere.

He halted at the sight of Alden, and his mouth opened.

“I’ve been visiting the bokabvs,” Alden said, when Stuart failed to speak.

“I would have known that even if no one told me.”

“Is it because my hair is sticking straight up and glowing?”

“That’s one reason.”

“Do you want to see them, too? The baby’s very glad to be here. It’s nice.”

Later, in the cottage that looked out over the stream full of zansees, Alden lathered his hair and rinsed it five times before it finally stopped feeling slimy.

When he got out of the bathroom, Stuart was sitting on the floor by the table, ready for their midnight snack.

“I thought I’d never get that stuff out of my hair. Sorry it took so long.” Alden plopped down onto the cushion across the table from him.

“I want this yellow thing first.”

“That’s pineapple salsa. And you may taste everything in whatever order you like. Let me name them all for you.” Alden plucked a corn chip out of the separate bag they were stored in. “Tortilla chip.”

“Tortilla chip,” said Stuart.

“It’s salty and crunchy.” Alden pointed the chip at the meal prep container in front of them. “Pineapple salsa. Guacamole. Beans—don’t send one through the walls with your spell. They’re smoky and spicy. I don’t know if you like spicy. And this is nacho cheese, but it’s not really cheese. She makes it out of a bunch of different things. And this beautiful sweet bread over here is our cinnamon roll.”

“Cinnamon roll.” Stuart leaned over it. “It smells good.”

“It is good. It is.”

Alden’s mouth was watering. Stuart was watching the tortilla chip with great interest.

“I brought enough for us to do this twice,” Alden said. “Once tonight and once in the morning.”

He grinned. “If we damage the pleasure centers in our brain, like someone once suggested eating too much Cook of the Moment food might do to me… it’s fine. Because we’re both going to see Healer Yenu tomorrow. She can just repair us.”

Stuart returned his smile. “That’s a good plan.”

“Isn’t it? Come on. Let’s eat.”

Tidbits & References:

Bisonvark — Bison + aardvark. Bokabvs have a head that closely resembles an aardvark's.

Quinyeth — Has a vanilla candle made from the wax of a bee. She’s a young votary and a current student at the Rapport school, just old enough to access the top library. Most people her age haven’t finished their choosing seasons, but Quinyeth dove right in and said she’d be a votary because she wants to support Asay-tor, who plans to become a knight soon.

Votary Garb — worn for votary activities, not for regular classes at the school.

Aymeg -- Not previously named. One of the Primary's spouses.

"Wow! Company!" -- I can confirm that this is what the baby bokabv thought when it saw a human sitting there.

zansees -- the shiny water bugs in the stream, can be caught in jars to provide a nightlight

It was interesting to hear Rel's thoughts on Stu's situation. I found his perspective enlightening, but I think it's a flawed perspective. He's acting as if any doubt equates to automatic failure, but that's very obviously not true. Granted, everyone's reactions have certainly not helped matters. You can argue they've reduced Stu's chances. But it's this doubling down more than anything that's doing the most damage in my opinion. Rel seems to be arguing that they need to double down because they already introduced the doubt and they can't close Pandora's box again. While it's true they can't undo the hurt they caused Stu, they can certainly make it up to him. They can treat him like an adult, listen to him, and work with him to rebuild the trust that's been broken. That they are all refusing to do so is only making things worse. It's like they're using their previous bad behavior as their excuse for their continued bad behavior.

Thanks Sleyca!!

J

Rel’s opinion is probably a mixture of records/experience and theorizing. Like: given how important confidence was for him and his siblings in their affixations he’s greatly worried about Stuart. Also him saying “He’ll die” seems to be his matter of fact / definitive way of speaking.

Jess

You know, it's not too late to rename Hopping to 'Bunny Bash' and make this a pure alliteration mini-arc. (This is the kind of very important thought I have when I stay up too late waiting for a chapter.)

orion

So Mother is an author surogate for how adorable she finds Alden?

ImNotHere

Stu deserves better but we get the best that can be Thanks for the chapter

LadyLark

Bad Parenting always gets me. Probably because I have my own issues so it’s harder on me. Though it does bring up the fact that I find most people with issues don’t talk it. I don’t know about others but for me it’s because every situation is different. What Stu deals with isn’t what Alden deals with or Boe. So it makes it really hard to converse about it. I do hope that they do talk about it though.

sebsebs

The bokabvs are so cute!! "Maybe it wasn’t strange that wizards could do magic. Maybe it was strange that everyone else couldn’t." hit me right in the meowmeow It's a monday morning and I want to magic work away

MooMoo195

I do hope Alden decides sooner than later to come clean to stuart, not because I want him to rush his decision, but so they can talk it out unrushed, rather than it be some last minute stressor right before he goes through his own binding.

WannaBeATree

I dunno. I've read about people being cheated on in a relationship having difficulties not to see 'signs' everywhere from then on, if the relationship continues. Assuming affixation hits even harder, it makes sense to not even try repairing the damage. On one hand, the damage might discourage Stu to affix and on the other, even if he affixes, he would suddenly start seeing 'signs' that undermine his confidense. Showing Stu support might help him 'right now', but might kill him later. I could see logical arguments to do it both ways. Not sure what ends up being better. I'd trust the alien group with hundreds of years of experience and a system god more than my own thoughts, but I also know that there is only a human author behind the story.

WannaBeATree

I wonder whether Stu's votary obligations will kick in, upon tasting the cinnamon roll and he'll feel obligated to ask Alden to share a roll with Emban. Also if Emban will decide to share hers with Ryada.

Lady Kyhira Tenti

Alden and Stu'art are so cute together. The little/big moments of thinking about each other. Them sharing nachos and awesome dessert they just seem like regular kids that's been friends for awhile not aliens

WannaBeATree

I now have the image of Alden as a glittering/glowing unicorn, coming out of a forest towards a lone cabbin in the woods, under moonlight. With Stu seeing him upon exiting and beeing transfixed by the sight.

Pete Magnuson

> The interesting stick had been removed. Rel-art’h said it was bad for the calf and might make him bond improperly with his mother. Instead, waist-high wooden panels had been set up to keep the little bokabv in, which would also keep his mother where she belonged even if she was large enough to jump them. I have no idea if this was meant to be metaphorical or just descriptive, but I can't help but read the stick as a reference to Stu's mother situation and the learned helpless as a reference to Rel's concern about Stu's self confidence Guess it's a good sign that I want to, and very well could, dig this story apart like a high school English class assignment

Gregory

Absolutely fascinating question from Alden. I guess it came from his dreams of a demonic bokabv, but it is a little odd since the only demons he’s ever really encountered were the little bugs, who were extremely ephemeral no matter how you treated them. There’s also the case we know of a wizard in the consulate who made deals with demons, which says some of them can communicate and they honor deals (to at least some degree).

WannaBeATree

Work will just adjust to feel like work again. :/ The current system is balanced to be optimal right before people's breaking point so as to maximise productivity. Magic won't change that.

Jeff Petkau

I think it was mostly prompted by the way Ryada carefully folded the kooba skins. Alden told her he'd realized a weakness in his own compassion when he watched her do that.

WannaBeATree

I do hope that they keep a snack for Healer Yenu in reserve. Deliberately damaging themselves to make more work for her is not nice. (even if it was a joke) Like throwing trash away in in the open, just because you know someone's job is to pick it up. If you are gonna do it, at least make it up somehow.

Baines

he did say his skill involved ‘communication’

Terrestrial_Biped

Apropos of nothing, guys, but I'm psyched Alden is gonna volunteer at the hospital. I've been hoping for/looking forward to that for ages.

Terrestrial_Biped

I suspect it's more a straightforward "we don't give mind-altering chemicals to younglings with developing brains" thing.

Armo

Awwww, Stu is so happy! That means I’m also left with a smile on my face :)

Glitter Rabbit (C)

Mother inflicts terrible pain on Alden. Sleyca inflects terrible pain on Alden. Yeah, I can see it

Winter Holiday

I think Stu may have just noticed Alden communicating with his authority. Secret might be out already.

Jess

It's not a joke about something that could actually happen. If having two of Natalie's meals in a row caused psychological damage, Alden would have been lost to hedonism halfway through intake.

Kemlion

Tftc!!!! So good, I hope the mother and baby stay safe forever and live happy lives

Catherine

"...None of them would have damaged your belongings or the learning cushion my brother gave you, though.” But would they have been able to resist the food? 🤔 methinks not

another wonderful chapter, thank you sleyca

Luminescent bokabv calves are adorable!

Solarnis

I loved the imagery of the students' spell, like a reverse alien abduction. Beam her up!

happypotamus, The Bearer of All Bananas

Rel-art'h was so kind and thoughtful in his own reserved and proper way. Given his duties, I hope that he sometimes manages to find joy in life. Commenters on the previous chapter who thought that he'd plot against Stu via Alden should feel shame. Although you're in good company: Stu should feel shame too. I love that Alden now feels psychologically safe enough at the Rapport to get covered in slobber. It does seem good for his healing - creating a positive, unusual sensory experience with the bokabvs to contrast with the experience in his dreams. This is going to make an adorable scene in the Netflix adaptation.

DAK

“Votary Garb — worn for votary activities, not for regular classes at the school.” Mmmhmmm. Because wearing ninja assassin robes to class would be weird…

Lyssur

Another mention of how Stu has repaired Alden's suitcase in a noteworthy way. This makes three- ask Mother or Stu about it, Alden! And his Traveler's bag- every wizard who sees him and his luggage must have so many questions. Or assume he is extremely favored by the art'h family. And humans don't even know. And Alden only knows about the Traveler's bag. He doubted that luggage was drawn to him, but he has *very* interesting luggage that he carries at almost all times, so, yeah, you are your skill, Alden. Always. Even the Earth name adaptation.

JJ Hunter

Rel-art'h smiling faintly at “I’m afraid to ask whether you mean he deserves better circumstances or better relatives" seems very like the Primary, suddenly. I think that's the first Rel smile we've gotten so far; it suits him. I wonder if Rel came away from that conversation with things to contemplate of his own. He clearly came with a set of topics and reassurances he wanted to offer, and their conversation had several turns he wasn't expecting. I like that Rel put some thought into something he could share with Alden (skysongs) that would be both educational and pleasant once they finished talking about the improper behavior of Rel's relatives.

PeasOfCrab

Baby Blue is such a fun little title. I feel like Rel and Stu maybe have a strong affinity/affection for each other given how “proper” they both are.

PeasOfCrab

Rel’s calm melancholy reminds me a little of Bithe.

PatienceHoney

It could make an adorable scene ... for anyone who hasn't read the book. 😉 My head movie was awesome! And nobody could match it!

Aspiring Moth

my initial thought on the title was that it was referring to Alden's auriad, and I thought it might be discovered (blue in colour, baby wizard). I should have thought of the bokabv drool

Drakenclaw

"Because I want it. Because I feel like screaming it at the universe until the universe listens." That honestly sounds like casting spells. XD

Martin Banks

Im constantly impressed by how good the character writing is... Rel first comes across as a stern taskmaster in the Stu memory and then you get more glimpses of him he's really thoughtful and completely reminds me of Stu in his mannerisms, super serious but very contemplative and thoughtful though different enough that you can imagine the older brother thing without them being the same. It's super subtle and great writing just... bravo tbh

Gaming with Bigby

I thought it would be Kibby's Auriad, since her's is a lighter version of Alden's blue one.

JJ Hunter

Heh; Yenu was threatening to stick Stu to the wall, now Rel says he thought he might have to glue Stu to his learning cushion. There is a part of Stu endearingly akin to the baby bokabv galloping forth for joy of company. I love that Alden is just as attached in his own way, and protective of Stu's delight in their time together. I keep coming back to that image of Stu's fistful of homefire strengthening Alden's dimly flickering spark through their clasped hands. Alden's faith in Stu, and his trust in Stu's self-determination, feels like its own burning flame come to bolster Stu's wavering spark.

Kevin Brock

Alden's thoughts on the Bokabvs & chaos make me feel that he's very close to making a choice--or to acknowledging the inevitable choice for himself. Despite what Boe said about Alden's "hero type", I think there are some things Alden just won't let happen. WRT Stuart's doubts, maybe knowing Alden has been through a Hn'tyon's binding once, and is about to again, will give him the extra confidence he needs.

> My skill is for communication and assisting others. Rel-art’h is NOT the person I thought would be the first since Hannah we’ve seen to build around being a support hero/knight

Mark E Bohstedt

I have been thinking for a while that Alden will reveal his magic to Stu before he gets his skill. This chapter solidified that for me.

maledei

> "“He’ll die.” Rel-art’h didn’t say it with any anger of his own. (...)It doesn’t matter that it was the people he trusts the most who weakened his confidence. What matters is that it is weakened, and we can’t repair it for him. A loving lie is too fragile apatch for this, now that he’s heard the truth. He has to find some way to shed his own doubt while enduring ours. If he can’t do that, and he chooses to go to his first binding anyway…that’s the outcome we must prevent.” So the deadline for Alden to come clean to Stu has been set. What better way to shed your doubt then breaking together with your sworn soon friend.

Alex Scriber

Lots of good lines today! Hard to pick a favorite, but this is great. Because I want it. Because I feel like screaming it at the universe until the universe listens. Maybe it wasn’t strange that wizards could do magic. Maybe it was strange that everyone else couldn’t.

People always try to help Alden by offering to carry his luggage, but that would make a luggage carrying skill useless so he insists on carrying it himself. Yes I'm misinterpreting things, but i love it.

Alex Scriber

I think Stu’s mannerisms remind you of Rel (instead of the other way around). Most likely Stu modeled his behavior on the behavior of teachers and adults he thought were good role models, and Rel was one of Stu’s teachers…

PatienceHoney

And I think we saw him use it when Alden superficially looked like he was changing the subject. Rel looked for a moment and then built on his understanding that Alden was interpreting from the skystory.

It's close. The moment I've been waiting for for what feels like ages. They are gonna be knight bros.

Aspiring Moth

yeah, I think this conversation with rel will be on his mind when with healer yenu. he may ask her about knights being obligated by oath to release sensitive information

Jeremy Goldberg

I remember the knight in the painting that caught Alden in the library had his clothes repaired the same way Stu repaired Alden’s suitcase. I wonder if that repair method is super expensive or complicated and is only used by knights in the field. Maybe any Artonan who sees his luggage naturally assumes it has survived some demonic hellscape.

Julie Ste

Isn’t that the essence of what Envulganwhatever is though? A thoughtful deep merging of understanding of each other to the extent that you can hold each others space in the universe with the result that you can shore each other up. Stu has a strong home fire understanding and was able to shore up Alden. Our hope is they can each do that for the binding, too. And even without that level of deepening, we have the Informant’s image of Alden’s brilliant smile while saying Stuart’s name - even without that level of deepening. That scene reminded me strongly of Esh and Lind on the couch. There is a poem translated a million different ways. The one my high school best friend gave me was loving best friends, but I think the original was intended as a marriage poem. Anyway, I don’t ship Stu and Alden - because I think that a ship is so small a part of the possibilities and the depth of friendship they are weaving can be. The non-marriage translation of this poem is what I think of for it: "Married Love" by Kuan Tao-sheng (1263-1319)

Rel asks "Do you need to carry your bags with you" This just made me think, probably others have commented but it just occurred to me now. Alden was given his messenger bag by Mother, and he takes it everywhere with him, and it's a very special bag. His skill is: Let me carry your luggage. Was mother having fun with him, or could there be something more to it?

Ian T Hathaway

Would kill and die for baby bokabv

*** He grinned. “If we damage the pleasure centers in our brain, like someone once suggested eating too much Cook of the Moment food might do to me… it’s fine. Because we’re both going to see Healer Yenu tomorrow. She can just repair us.” Stuart returned his smile. “That’s a good plan.” “Isn’t it? Come on. Let’s eat.” *** I feel like Alden is making great progress teaching Stu the art of having fun. Stu seems to spend so much of his time in pursuit of perfection that he is just now learning to relax or learning that fun doesn't make him less of a potential knight. This first occurred to me in the last chapter with Stu contemplating his change in attitude towards Alden's initial reaction to Better Alden. Hychetch (sp?) indeed! And it is now confirmed with his playful agreeing that "damaging the pleasure centers" of their brains was a good way to spend the evening.

Why is everyone ignoring the political ramifications of a human wizard existing? Humans WILL try to control him and study him. The Artonans will have no choice but to remove him from Earth for his own protection. Not to mention some Artonans will also want to control and study him. Alden will have little or no say in what will be done to him, depending on who gets to him first. Telling Stu will put all of that burdan on him. Will he be forced to report it for the good of the Tri Planets? Can he keep it a secret without breaking his oaths? Is no one else worried about this? (Besides Boe)

Carnicle

Teaching how to have fun also might very well save Stu's life. I don't remember the exact quote, but in the same way that Alden wants to have something in his life other than duty and suffering, Stu might be picking up a similar perspective. And when it comes binding time, I don't think it's the sense of duty that's going to get you through the pain, or at least not exclusively. I can also imagine that Stu has had an interesting relationship with experiencing in-the-moment happiness; finding another example to guide how to do so in a healthy way is probably great for him too, regardless of his future plans.

Elle

I think in the future having a travel bag that can travel the multiverse to find you with your things is beneficial. Yes Mother is still playing with him.

We know there are sapient demons, there was an Artonan referenced in the story who made a deal with a demon at some point.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

Alden thinking there was an intentional metaphor in Rel-art'hs skystory is clearly meant to be a metaphor for how we think everything in the story is a metaphor. And that Rel-art'h acknowledges that Alden's thoughts are the true and right thoughts of a friend, regardless of what anyone else thinks or whether his metaphor was intentional, is a metaphor for how a death-of-the-author interpretation of metaphors is acceptable when the readers have genuine care and investment in the story. And that Rel-art'hs metaphor was actually written by the author with the intention of being interpreted by Alden as a metaphor, redardless of whether Rel meant it that way, is further evidence that we are meant to read metaphors into everything.

Charlie

If he didn't have the magic sense, then consistently carrying luggage might be a somewhat normal way for someone with his skill to meditate on and deepen his understanding of luggage carrying from a non-magical perspective. From outside appearances, given the strength of his skill, it might seem both like this is what he's doing and that it's working incredibly well.

Jeff Petkau

I came up with this totally unfounded theory on Reddit (which is at the Kon summons chapter) and repeating it here to get people's thoughts on it. Kon's skill is specifically to be a crew member of the Sdyelis Branch, which is traveling to distant dimensions where emergency repairs may be critical and replacement parts unavailable. It is not a safe path at all.

PatienceHoney

I thought and raised that idea in the comments of the Here To There chapter. I think most people who commented didn't think it was likely... but I still believe!

Jared

I was wondering why Alden is seemingly so sure that Stuart will succeed as a knight and that everyone needs to support him. I think it is because if someone with a hard past that almost broke them will fail as a knight, then Alden is doomed himself. He defends Stuart because in many ways they are the same, except Alden already made his “choice” and has to live or die with the consequences. Having to hear Stuart’s family say with such certainty that Stu won’t survive is incredibly personally painful for Alden. Like being told he is doomed.

Bob Smith

This reminds me of what the informant thought the Gloss might have done to get Alden to choose rabbit

BelligerentGnu

I can't help but notice that we are spending fewer and fewer chapters in school life and more and more on Artonans, and I cannot help but find this a hopeful development.

“It doesn’t matter that it was the people he trusts the most who weakened his confidence. What matters is that it is weakened, and we can’t repair it for him.” can’t or won’t? none of them have tried. they’ve just continued to plot and manipulate and drive stu away. the lack of introspection on rel’s part is… par for the course. I still really liked their interaction, tho. and, it’s nice that rel is supportive of them making their own decisions, and thinks using alden for plotting-purposes is wrong. I was not certain before, that alden would tell stu before stu’s first affixation. I’ve seen others in the comments say he was going to with certainty, like it was said somewhere in the story, but I don’t remember that at all. however, given rel’s conviction that without stu throwing off the doubts his family gave him he will die, I think it just became very, very likely that alden will tell him.

Jess

Alden: I can't believe I implied anything could possibly lessen my respect for Rel-art'h, who is both Stu's brother and a knight. Rel-art'h: We broke Stu. Alden: You've failed as family and should feel shame. (Also, I'm looking forward to Alden collecting even more interesting luggage as he deepens his skill. Just sitting and meditating on his nature until people hand him mysterious bags.)

Sky23

I really like this interpretation, and it's the theory I'm going with until proven otherwise. It's so easy to forget with how mature he is that Alden is just a kid and would absolutely have subconscious terrified reactions like this that would majorly shift his opinions, who wouldn't at 16?

Fabian

Did we ever find out what Gorgon’s first rites were? I believe when Alden tried using Kibby’s blood, Gorgon said he skipped straight to second rites. That means Gorgon must have performed first rites with Alden at some point. I wonder if Alden will finally eat Stuart’s bone before Stuart affixes to gift him more stability.

JJ Hunter

I bet Jeffy would be *very* impressed with Alden's temporary glowing blue Mohawk. I hope Stu saved an image of it.

Watch out, Softly Salty! The new hotness is Drool of the Mother Bokabv. *Winston glares jealously* "He's doing hair sponsorships now??" *Cut to commercial. An abstract closeup of a large bovine tongue dripping with blue drool, filmed at high shutter speed, licks slowly against some hair, framed such that it is unclear who or what the hair belongs to. It cuts to a similar shot from another angle, featuring a different length and color of hair. The voiceover begins in soft moo-like murmers: "So slime. So blue. It glow. Hair do."

Hayden Pech

Man, I’m so excited for Alden and Stu to bond over being knights together. I was so sure the Here-to-There would be the moment! The royal road cliff got me. It’s cool to see all the fan theories and stuff here :)

Stuart Brown

This is now the second time that we've been told that Alden's suitcase (repaired by Stuart after small Alden ripped it up) is something unusual. Porti-loth the healer also reacted to it. Stuart has used some sort of priceless anti-chaos knight repair material to fix Alden's suitcase, and he still hasn't realised.

Anon-Anon

It 100% shows how much of an influence Rel has been on stu imo.

Glitter Rabbit (C)

I keep coming back to this chapter at least once a day. It is so precious. Alden getting angry at th art'h family for not being there for Stu, Alden considering the preciousness of life, and a sleepover with magic health food (next time they need to eat pizza or burgers). It's also kinda ironically funny how this chapter manages to show how Alden might be able to achieve what he wishes for much easier if he revealed his Knight-esque status. It is very clear that Alden cares a lot about protecting others. His hero dream is very much alive, just not the earth version of a hero. He also wants more agency over his life and future. Knighthood might be contradictory to this at a glance but it is likely to offer him more than he knows. He could finally learn magic properly with instructors. Most importantly though, he wouldn't be alone with his worries and pain. I also doubt that baby knights are going into chaos infested areas they aren't suited for. With the safety that is currently in place, knights are more likely to work under extremely controlled conditions for their first several years of service. There are things to be lost, yes. We don't know the political ramifications, and Alden doesn't want to say goodbye to earth. However, his future promises a lot of suffering and earth simply isn't equipped to help him through all that. Alden's current agency seems a lot more like a shield from the inevitable truth. Mother told him as much during their first conversation. Alden still has so much healing to do. Not only form Thegund but also his childhood. Maybe it's good that Alden can pretend to be ignorant of this truth for a little while longer. To us readers, this outcomes is probably pretty clear, but is it to Alden? How much of his ignorance is a choice? How much is fear? Anyway. I basically wrote this comment for my own benefit. I like writing my thoughts down sometimes.

Elli

Regarding the timing of Alden's wizardly reveal, wouldn't that have to be somewhat soon? When he returned to Earth, he had 8 months free of summoning, and a commendation that is going to cause problems when he is next summoned. Does anyone know what the in-story timing is on that 8 months? I think he only has 2-3 months left? That's less than the timing for both his and Stuart's affixations, but seems like it'd be the point that he'd have to make arrangements with the knights if he wishes to avoid being summoned by arrogant wizards who wish to be served drinks at parties by a commended rabbit and laugh about their superiority.

Aspiring Moth

he's been back on earth for around 3.5 months at this point, so he has a decent amount of time left. the summoning exemption will run out when he has a couple of months left before his affixation based on the most recent estimates

Elli

It's so good to see that Alden is continuing to see Healer Yenu.

Goodie

There is that Artonan thing about ‘…striding for perfection’. Such an imperfect suitcase maybe jarring to this concept for them. I like the idea that something so battered and patched up is still used and performs that function well, even if it doesn’t look perfect… Just like Alden and Stu?

Ali Yang

Ever since the concept of the evulgisnas (sp?) was introduced I've always assumed that Alden and Stu would break their authority together like Lind and Esh. And as more and more chapters comes out it does feel inevitable. The question becomes when they would do it.

Nedardo

It definitely increasingly seems like the Mother is matchmaking them pretty hard.

Anon-Anon

Is alden going back to earth next chapter? I'm confused where this and the last chapter have been going tbh. I'll admit ive been very 'lacking of the sleep' this week, so maybe that's on me. Regardless, can't wait for the next chap. Edit: Cheers for the replies.

Itsowkur

I think in the morning he and Stu are going to the inward path (Alden for healing and Stu for contemplating)

Taylor Young

Good chapter. Apropos of nothing, I wonder how Gorgon’s doing. I worry about that guy.

Not_You

Rel-art’h is a cool dude. I really liked how he explained and handled everything. It feels like an important moment that will help Alden come to terms with telling stuart about him affixing like a knight

Goodie

I’m still on the fence about Rel-Art’h and his intentions. His doubts about Stuart becoming a knight I feel will have some influence on Alden. “He’s will die” is a statement hard to ignore. I found Rel’s mention about the Sky Story an interesting call back to Stuart’s actions a few chapters ago where he was ‘on his knees’ contemplating things, and Alden’s linking the story to Stuart’s situation with his F&F on target.

Aspiring Moth

It just occurred to me that Stu and Lute are around the same size. if Stu somehow managed to sneakily teleport to anesidora, he could borrow Lute's human clothing to go incognito. hoodie and baseball cap or something, people wouldn't notice unless they had a reason to look closer

ImNotHere

[Because I feel like screaming it at the universe until the universe listens] brought me back to Aulia saying that she wants to speak to the universe the way Artonans do. Which bring me to the yell in the throat: what if "a yell in the throat" is a hn'tyon saying, a link to the elder's croak. Bithe is the one who introduced Alden to the phrase. And Ryada bounced back on Alden using it (agreed that Alden does not talk to a lot of Artonans out of the knights so we don't know but still...) For those who like conspiracy theories: The knights know that Alden has an authority sense. Not because of the free authority that he wields but because of his authority in his skill. When you have an authority sense, your *self* is more concsious and active. Mother said that when you have an authority sense, the bound authority fights more against the affixation (wich makes it grow faster). And that's why the hn'tyons know, they recognized the fight against the limitations, the yell against the cage. You can link the yell as a metaphor for the affixation that awaits you. Alden had [a voice raw from screaming] after his first affixation.(still in love with the simplicity of C61) The hn'tyons don't say anything because they wait for Alden to declare himself (and so is Mother). That would also explained the obsession from Esh to know if Alden chose a good skill. He knows that it can be devastating to choose poorly. And linking the reveal to the authority in the skill would allow to limit the person in the know to the knights. Otherwise any wizard would realise that Alden has an authority sense (for exemple: if it was becasue the way his free authority is too still or move a certain way). Wich include Stuart, he understand the process and the danger of affixing. But you need to experience your authority shouting to recognize the yell of someone's else.

J Reynolds

Lute could get on Stuart's shoulders. They could wear a trench coat and pass themselves off as a basketball player!

J Reynolds

He's been in Chicago since (roughly) 2000. He's probably as OK as he can be. I actually think that things are looking up for him a bit. He's got a guy who sends him the occasional CARE packages, and who could eventually reopen an investigation into whatever got Gorgon put in Chicago. (I'm assuming that it was a miscarriage of justice that got him there. #FreeGorgon #GorgonDidNothingWrong

Trek

It’s a bit random, but is anyone else worried about Asay-tor and his upcoming affixation? We’ve only seen little of him, but I sort of got the impression that some of his motivations might be a bit misguided(?), especially based on what he said to Stu (on how Stu has a greater responsibility to not burden his family who cares a lot about him). No matter how loved Stu is, it will never trump the contribution that he can give as a knight (assuming he stays alive of course). It makes me think Asay-tor might have chosen to be a knight because it’s what’s ‘natural’ and expected for someone of his stature, backed up by his cousin saying how no one was surprised he chose it. He also looks up to Rel a lot, which reminds me of some of Alden’s motivations on his skill and becoming a support hero with Hannah, and how it felt so distant once Alden got through Thegund. I don’t think it was detrimental for Alden’s sense of self because his core didn’t really change i.e. being super supportive, but it’s not like it’s guaranteed for Asay-tor.

Person Guy

Esh and other knights placing great value on picking the right skill doesn't really need an explanation. For them and all their friends, it's completely life-defining, so they're used to considering it extremely important. And I'm not sure your theory about needing to be a knight to recognize the difference in authority makes sense. I'd expect at least any wizard with much of any familiarity with knights to be able to recognize the difference between a knight and wizard if that's a thing any Artonans can just see. Though I do think it's plausible that while Alden technically has an authority sense, he's, like, legally blind and just not aware of the sorts of things competent Artonan wizards can see. But remember that the primary needed close proximity to Alden to get a decent look at his authority, so it may be that that kind of internal authority detail just isn't readily detectable.

ghostb1tch

ohhh right I forgot about him but I was very concerned about him when he was introduced (if he is who I am thinking of). I remember thinking, “if anyone should be talked out of their affixation it is him”

PatienceHoney

Where is @puppy0cam and why has no one asked for chapter predictions???

PatienceHoney

Prediction Healer Yenu will want to discuss Alden's thoughts on one of the following: 1. His disgust with himself for having half a moment of doubt if he was able to help Kibby. 2. His season of choosing and what that means. 3. What happened to him when the sinker sender flooded Anesidora.

Drew

Has Alden reaffixed for a 2nd time yet? I can't quite remember. I know he got the warning from Earth's system.

puppy0cam

his second affixation was when he came back from thegund. He hasn't done his third affixation yet.

PhoenixPax

I'm torn, because I want to like Rel, but I’m also annoyed at him. “Oh, we can’t pretend we support him because there’s absolutely no middle ground ANYWHERE between implying he’s going to die every time we interact and lying that we think things are going to be ok. So he needs to do this 100% knowing he’s doing it without our help and support.” It seems like all the family is thinking of Stuart more like a thing to force back into shape than a person. I’m remembering how Stuart’s healer had to kidnap him because the Primary wouldn’t listen that Stuart needed time, rather than psychiatric force. Sounds like the Primary learned his lesson mostly, but the rest of the family still sees him as a child to be bullied into obedience, not an adult (almost adult?) who is allowed to make decisions they don’t like. The message, whether they intend it or not: We only love and support you as far as you obey us. Don’t turn to US for help when you are struggling, we’re the ones who told you not to do it. It’s a great way to produce children who might move away and not come back to visit for the next 25 years. Makes me think of all the many humans who have come out as gay or have stood their ground and married someone with a different skin color or culture. Some of them lost their families over it because they got kicked out. Many others simply left because staying was unbearable.

Alex

To be fair, I believe as soon as he affixes they'll support him fully. After all, once that happens he can't go back anyway. They definitely suck, not supporting him. Must be scary though, because there are real consequences if he can't handle it. Theyre scared he'll literally die (well, take part in ritualised sacrifice anyway) They probably still struggle with Sinas death and they probably thought she was more stable than Stu. I understand why they want to discourage him. Imagine your loved one wanting to do something so risky. Such a big sacrifice, even if they can handle it. Id like to think I'd still be supportive, but I can understand the urge to want to keep them safe and unburdened. Theyre still jerks, Stu is awesome and they should've realized that he's serious and won't be discouraged
