The sun still hid its warmth below the horizon when Stu left the cottage and headed toward the main house. He hadn’t slept enough, but he wanted some things from his room. And because Alden was visiting, he preferred to give up a small amount of rest in exchange for avoiding many of the family members who were currently in their beds.

One problem with doing anything unusual in such a large household was that answering everyone’s curiosity could be a day’s labor. Knowing a human was physically present among them filled his relatives with questions.

Some of them were actually warnings and criticism wearing the skin of questions. Those were bad. It was hard not to be overwhelmed when someone he loved said something he thought was ignorant and wrong-hearted.

Mostly, thankfully, the things they asked weren’t like that.

Was the human comfortable in this or that way? Had Stu chosen new clothes for him, or was that his own idea? What did he think of the Rapport, of wizards, of Artonans, knights, flatseed candy, toilets, the ryeh-b’t, and contract magic?

Was Stu going to make sure he had a nice job with someone trustworthy? Maybe the lab at DawnStep? Maybe a crafter of potions in one of the Rapports?

What did the two of them even talk about when they were alone together?

Stu wasn’t upset by questions like those. Much. If someone else had come home with an alien they wanted to befriend, he imagined he would have been curious, too.

But he’d come to realize that every question was basically about the same thing, whether the asker meant well or not.

Alden is very different from you and us. Here’s one way and another and another.

The differences were present, but Stu was used to being very different from everyone he’d ever wanted to be friends with. And their similarities were so many he marveled at them. When it was only the two of them spending time together, a lot more was going on than one of them being a wizard and the other being an Avowed. Stu had occasionally been surprised when Alden brought that point into whatever they were doing.

And some of the differences between their species were fun to discover and laugh about, now that they knew each other better.

Alden really needed to quit eating things without checking what they were first, though.

He’s thoughtful. And brave. He is compassionate. And he demands much of himself. He likes my company. He made a video flapping his arms to tease me about gokoratches. He shares rolls made of a bark spice called cinnamon and tells me about making them with his mother when he was young.

These things were so treasurable, and so much more important than Alden being from another planet, that Stu didn’t want all the questions about differences to intrude on him when they’d woven friendship peacefully last night.

He did want his learning cushion and clean school clothes, though, so he slipped into the house and hurried for his room. He fetched everything, released some fresh beetles into Other Alden’s room, then went down the hall to make sure that Emban hadn’t come back.

Her whole squad was supposed sleeping over at one member’s house in Root. Hopefully they were listening to advice from their elders while they made new plans for next year. A suggestion that they welcome a knight from the second Rapport had left Emban looking lost when she heard it, even though it was an expected idea and not entirely related to Ryada-bess taking time away from them.

She’s still gone, he thought as he approached her door and carefully reached out, looking for her presence.

If Stu had been born here under the tree that all his siblings had been born under, and if he’d taken his first steps in these halls instead of by that river, would he have been more compatible with Emban?

Who might he have grown closer to after declaring, and what would it be like to go to them, very soon now, and ask them to watch him cast his last spell as an unbound wizard?

This is the kind of wondering you do when you’ve hung upside down for too long.

A child of Jeneth and Iella born under this tree would simply be someone who wasn’t him.

And there was a chance he’d be invited to witness some last spells from old schoolmates this weekend. Asay, Meer, and a couple of others were going to do that with one another after they left the Welcome End celebration. It was one of those things Stu had tried to tell himself he didn’t want to find out about, even though he’d kept his ears open for information every time he’d been over at the school caring for the bokabv.

He wanted them to invite him. It wouldn’t take too long, so even if Alden was over it would be fine for Stu to go. And Asay would surely invite Quinyeth, so…they might remember another person who they believed should be a votary.

The dining room was empty when he passed through it. All the personal closets had been dealt with, and the annual evaluation and repair project had moved downstairs to the supply library.

Stu planned to fetch a bitter tea that he thought might taste like coffee, based on Alden’s description of that human drink. As soon as he entered the kitchen, he saw that someone else had been here. They weren’t around now, but they’d pulled out the cured sebaba haunch that had been stored at the back of the cold pantry for years.

Why would they do a thing like this?  The haunch was bigger than Stu was. It had a chunk taken from it, and it hung from a carving loop. I guess we’re eating sebaba meat for the next few days.

“Your enthusiasm shouldn’t be that low when you haven’t even braved your first bite,” someone said.

“Jozz! You’re home!”

The kitchen wasn’t empty after all. Stu had just missed the man standing at the counter a few steps away, pinching small pieces from the meat on his plate and dragging each one through sap sauce.

“Hello, Sina Stu. Don’t blame me too much for the sebaba. Veln told Kofa we liked it and were just saving it for a special occasion, so now Kofa thinks it’s an appropriate Welcome End gift. He sent me a message asking me to take it to the Rapport school or DawnStep with his well-wishes. My oaths as a knight prevent me from doing that to people who are about to face first binding. We’ll have to end the beast ourselves.”

“How is it?”

“I can taste why our ancestors only hunted them as a last resort.”

Jozz’s smile was a familiar one. His facial features were so much like their father’s and like Sina’s, who’d been his full sister by blood in addition to love and only a year younger. Stu had once regretted that he didn’t look more like them. He still did at times, but getting older had made it a less frequent thought.

“Your subtlety spell is excellent,” Stu said. “I didn’t know you were here, and now that you’ve called my notice, it seems that all is normal.”

“I’m glad to hear that. It would be embarrassing for someone who just requested a test for the third illusion symbol to be caught by a sleepy little brother who wasn’t even trying.”

“The third already! Congratulations, Jozz.”

With a third symbol of illusion on his coat, he’d have completed the practical requirements to graduate from the university. It was later than he would have finished if he hadn’t become a knight but very quickly considering how much time he’d spent away over the past years.

“Don’t be too excited for me. I’ve put off every useless requirement I could, and now I have to spend the next half a year attending classes I don’t like before I earn the diploma.”

The next half year. He’s planning to be home for a while then. Stu focused on him, reaching out to sense him.

“You’re home because you need to bind again,” he said.

“Yes. I’m not slowing down even a little. I’ve told myself how I feel about that, but I just don’t listen. Also, poke me when you do that. How am I supposed to say hello when I don’t know you’ve drawn close?”

Jozz, like many members of their family, was an existence who wasn’t naturally aware of anything going on beyond his own spot. He had to make a deliberate effort to perceive the nonphysical world around him. It was the opposite of Stu’s own sensitivity, which sometimes led him to limit his perception.

This difference had resulted in a family training period years ago, after Stu had begun to feel at home at the siblinghold. No tiny whispers of greeting from him toward people who couldn’t hear those, and no authority embraces from them that struck him out of nowhere. The ones who were mutually unable to recognize a subtle approach were used to pouncing on each other like that.

Stu embraced his brother’s existence. Jozz nodded and returned it.

They weren’t very good together in this way. They hadn’t been since Sina had died. Stu didn’t want to know why. He did want to be as comfortable with this brother’s authority as he once had been. He thought Jozz felt the same because he never pulled away first.

“That was a pounce,” he told Jozz when he withdrew.

“I can tell when I’m watching for it, you know,” Jozz said. He hadn’t stopped eating.

“How was Goldbush?” Stu asked.

Jozz grunted. “Festering.”

“You didn’t clear your patch?”  He was surprised, but he tried not to sound like he was.

Goldbush had been one of the main planets young knights were sent to for the past three years. Jozz had been certain when he’d left home for this latest trip that he’d be able to see the corrupted patch he’d been assigned to two years ago finally stabilized.

“We were so close. We were talking about finishing early and showing up to surprise the squads clearing another area. Someone must have become complacent and let a bad one slip through.”

“I’m sorry that happened.”

“It’s fine. The next group will get to enjoy seeing it finished. Unless our elders really are sabotaging us on purpose because it’s such a convenient training world. I met someone who actually thought that.”

“At least you’re home in time for Father’s call. He’ll be so happy to hear about your third symbol.”

“I’d better not fail the exam.”

“You wouldn’t have asked for the exam if you thought you might fail.”

Jozz liked to be over prepared.

“Enough about my school. Am I keeping you from yours? Are you well at LeafSong these days?” His pink eyes were looking at the uniform and the learning cushion.

Stu hadn’t seen Jozz since Alden started coming for visits. And Alden…

The painting. He’ll be excited to meet him.

“I’ve got time before I have to go,” Stu said. “I was going to contemplate in the streamview cottage and have first meal with my soon-friend. Alden stays there when he’s visiting. He’s my guest. Did you hear everything about that? And Jozz, he’ll be pleased to meet you because he was moved by your—”

“The human boy Aunt Alis honored and spent a favor for?” Jozz set the pinch of meat he’d taken back down. “He’s here now?”

“Yes,” Stu said. “And I’m weaving a friendship with him that I hope will last for our lifetimes. He’d like to meet you. I think he admires you.”

Jozz made a short hiss. It was only a sound of mild disapproval, but it struck Stu somewhere in his stomach and sent an ache of warning through him before the next blow.

“An alien who’s contractually obligated to serve wizards can’t be your friend. Not the kind of friend you want, at least. He’s not your peer.” Jozz shook his head. “You’re avoiding your actual peers, or being avoided by them, because they can’t agree with you. And you’re avoiding friendship with the people you’ve met at LeafSong because you can’t agree with them. I know it must be hard, Stu, but it will pass. And when it does, you’ll regret having tattooed yourself with someone who won’t even understand…are you running away?”

“This is walking,” Stu said, keeping a shrill out of his voice.

“Oh, rot. Stu! I’m just trying to advise you!”

“Try listening instead of advising next time! Wouldn’t that be a unique experiment!?”

Stu. I’ll listen. The human—”

“Alden!”

“Alden…that makes me think of your other Alden, which is weird. Please turn around, and don’t make me chase you like I’m a child. Alden admires me? Why? I’m sure I admire him, too, if you and Aunt Alis do. That doesn’t mean I think you should be lifelong friends of the dearest sort, but of course, I’d be happy to meet him.”

Stu rounded on him.

“No!” He said it very shrilly. How shitty. “You can’t meet him!”

Jozz sighed. “I want to meet—”

“He’s my guest. You can’t. You can’t go to streamview cottage, and you can’t have a bite of cinnamon roll made by a Ryeh-b’t who imbues food with pleasurable magic. You can’t interrupt Alden’s studies and his preparations for Yenu-pezth, and you aren’t allowed to enjoy his company and hear how deeply he has considered your painting in the top library. Because he will sit there sincerely admiring your sacrifices, and you will sit there thinking about how odd I am for having him over. He…he deserves better than that.”

Stu stalked away.

“Don’t you think your response to this is too much?” Jozz called.

“I do not! Don’t bother my friend!”

“My little brothers are so cute.” As soon as Stu was outside, Evul stepped into the kitchen. “I regret not being around all the time when you were growing up. I’ll make up for the lost years by giving you loving lies now.”

“Let’s not so early in the morning.”

“My love for you lasts all day.” She hopped up to squat on the counter beside his plate.

“Are your feet clean?”

“They have the clean soil of our Mother world between their toes. Here we go with the love! You didn’t just hurt Baby Stu’s feelings by telling him something everyone else in the house has already tried to force on him until he screamed them down. He will forgive you quickly without expecting an apology. He doesn’t like Human Alden more than you right now. He will gladly share whatever food-drugs they’re playing with in their cottage. And telling adolescents they can’t have contract tattoos with their favorite fellow adolescents always works.” Her pink eyes held his. “Well..are you comforted?”

“Not at all.”

“I must need practice.”

Jozz cast one eye in the direction their youngest sibling had gone. “Is he all right?”

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot over the past few weeks,” Evul said. “He likes me.”

“Well done.”

“He talks to me. Or he did. I think he’s getting tired.”

“What does that mean?” Jozz asked.

“Just that he’s getting tired. We’ve all been fighting him for a long time. If he were a demon, I’d have listed him for capture so that his stamina could be studied.”

“Don’t call our family members demons. It’s obscene.”

“I said if. Your squads must go lighter on the jokes than mine do if you aren’t calling each other demons regularly. Our brother seems to be slowly wearing out. And maybe everyone else sees that as an opportunity, but I’ve realized that I don’t know what happens when Stu gets tired of fighting. We’ve never been here before, and I don’t think I like it. It’s all so far away from where it’s supposed to be. I was going to find you and tell you to let him have some air. I heard you came home late last night. I should have found you then, before you were mean to him.”

Jozz frowned. “He’ll be fine…I didn’t say anything new to him. Apparently.”

“You’re closer to his age. That makes whatever you say louder.” She lifted a hand and placed it on his shoulder. “Which is why, after hearing that your mission ended in failure and that you go soon to your torment, he responded by telling you that you were unworthy of speaking to Human Alden. Don’t you dare let your breath fall upon the cottage where he studies human things!”

“I did notice a certain harshness uncommon among votaries… ”

“He and Alden attempted to have someone beheaded a few days ago.”

“What?”

“A wizard made a nuisance of himself while Emban was trying to have fun with her squadmates at a Here-to-There. Stu and Alden fixed the problems the nuisance had caused, tucked all the knights safely back in the Rapport, and then went directly to an executioner to demand an aggressive response. Veln thought Stu would spend a week immersing himself in legal processes and considering options, thus gaining confidence as a young wizard and a votary. But Stu had Alden watching the nuisance wizard for crimes all along, and so as soon as he nuisanced, they had plenty of evidence and they dragged him to the nearest person with a ring of death. Veln seems surprised…but proud.”

“Something about this story sounds untrue,” Jozz said slowly. “But I don’t know enough to argue with you.”

“Watch your back. They’re thirsty for blood.”

Thanks for the chapter.

Thanks for the chapter

ImNotHere

thanks for the chapter

cafenacet

Who names their kid Jozz??

Dryxal

Evul's great. Especially that final paragraph which is technically correct in all the right ways.

Nyroe

Joss stepped on a landmine, that's for sure. I wonder how quickly the family's tune would change if they knew just how special and unique Alden is. Did Joss know about Alden's experience on Thegund and still give his spiel? Or was it more of a gut reaction based on the rumors circulating the family?

Faiir

I'm not sure how much of Evul's description of the events is trolling and how much is a real outsider perspective, but just the fact that the situation could be interpreted completely differently from an average Artonan's perspective makes it interesting.

Julkur

Evul is evil... I mean great! “Watch your back. They’re thirsty for blood.”

Drakenclaw

Evul so cute. Best character. Thanks for the chapter. Her list of things that were definitely true was incredible. You need some decarbonization cream to cure those burns.

Xurican

Thanks for the chapter! It ended too soon and now I'm sad I have to wait for the next

Curious Toast

Tis true, their bloodthirst knows no bounds!

Robert Smart

Wow. Loving lies used as a club for jozz’s head and heart.

Julkur

Although Stuart stormed of being upset, the Evul Jozz interaction took the spike of emphatic displeasure out of the chapter. I hope Jozz feels sorry and contemplates his words and unworthiness to breath the same air as the Human

Guus van der Borg

“Something about this story sounds untrue,” Jozz said slowly. “But I don’t know enough to argue with you.” Probably the best response to trolling siblings. Don't trust a word they say! :)

Jack Sprat

Evul is so great.

Willow

Such a good sibling moment at the end. Made me giggle

Andrew Tobin

Evul is fantastic and tricksy.

WhisperOfLife

The "he deserves better" parallel with last chapter... 🥹

ImNotHere

[I’ll make up for the lost years by giving you loving lies now.”] ... “My love for you lasts all day.”] Evul has some GLaDOS vibes

Guus van der Borg

"Our brother seems to be slowly wearing out. And maybe everyone else sees that as an opportunity, but I’ve realized that I don’t know what happens when Stu gets tired of fighting." Yeah, the end of fighting is not always surrender or relenting. Sometimes it's going out in a blaze of glory. To end the metaphor there. If you push your views onto another until they break, the relationship WILL suffer, one way or another. I stand by the fact that sometimes it IS necessary for a parent, or concerned loved one, to do so. This might even be one of them, because they are convinced that Stu will die. But you have to expect that it will damage the relationship. Only do it if the other's well-being is more important to you than your relationship with them. Which, again, is most likely the case in this situation. I don't think there's actually a good answer here. All of this drama is from a point of love, and all are thinking they are doing the best they can, and none of them are entirely wrong. It's just a bad situation.

A Free Skeleton

Huh, so knights can also go to wizard college and get wizard diplomas. That makes sense but I don't think we'd seen it before.

Augs Lau

The moon rabbit has an insidious and terrible fangs!

Eva

I love Emban! Finally moving to Stu's corner a little. So much information on Stu's pov. I need to reread! Excellent Soup

Charlie

Of course, the irony is that Jozz is actually quite correct about the avowed-wizard relationship being an issue, given Alden's worries about being honest with Stu. He has too much difficulty trusting Stu to be able to become lifelong friends atm.

Josiah Greenwood

Hey, so I'd die for Stu. Just. Y'know. If he ever needs it, I'm prepared.

Anthony Lutz

I wonder what the average Artonans authority sensetivity is, how much worry has Alden put to keeping Himself still when in the presense of other wizards when they may not have been able to sense him because they were not expecting anything to be found. Lind is obviously high sensetivity, since she felt his targetless authority fistbump from a long distance.

Gregory

Frankly Alden would probably prefer people think he was specifically told to watch the wizard, because it gives an excuse for why he remembered extremely specific auriad movements based on a brief glance through a window.

WannaBeATree

I agree with that and would like to add another point. If you break a character like that, they will very likely change. It is possible that the new character might not be one, that you would have fought so hard to save in the first place. Having changed the things you wanted to preserve in the first place.

Amber Gregory

What an epic alternative view chapter. Stu and Alden are so good at treasuring each other. I know knights are really busy and all, but I'm disappointed that his family haven't investigated this friendship before coming to their conclusions (except maybe Emban). Seems like it would be obvious to anyone who *looked with both eyes* that they have a relationship worth the weaving. I hope Jozz is going to make it his business (though I guess he's going to have a head full of bees soon)

Thomas Todd

I wonder if they can see the danger of wearing Stu out, because while it might make it easier to convince him, if it doesn't then surely him going into his first binding in that mindset just makes it more dangerous

Gregory

Well, except for “Stu had Alden watching…”. But yeah the rest is accurate, minus all context.

T N

Wow, right in the feels... Avowed are really treated like forever-children who could never be possibly on same level as Artonans. Sure the power imbalance is there, but it's insulting to imply that it could not be circumvented through negotiations and boundaries. It really just shows once again how socially stratified their society is and how they see absolutely no problem with that.

Gregory

The thing is a) Alden can’t tell the difference and b) the Artonan he has chosen to hang out with the most is extremely sensitive.

Gregory

Poor Stu. The argument “everyone who should be your friend doesn’t want to be so you should abandon the person who does want to be” is a really pathetic one, and I’m not sure Jozz is going to figure that out.

Karim Saadi

You go Stu! His family is making him hoarse by forcing too many yells into and out of him.

Guus van der Borg

Her pink eyes held his. “Well..are you comforted?” “Not at all.” “I must need practice.” Yes Evul, practise on all your friends and siblings, I'm sure they'll appreciate it! :)

Saaski

🤣😂🤣😂😅😅😅 Gotta love Evul

zombie

The last two chapters seem to prepare for the fact that Stuart is at his breaking point. It feels like he is about to do something extreme: leave his home to have some distance between him and the family that drives him insane or even do something irrevocable like affixing.

Cole

That was my favorite chapter in a while, really stood out as great character writing

zombie

Note how every single member of the household assumes that Stuart's and Alden's relationship is an abnormality that will not last. None of them believe that Stuart has good reasons and things in common with Alden, so they don't bother asking or listening. It shows a fundamental disrespect not only to Alden, but also to Stuart's wisdom and taste in people. After all, Alden doesn't give a rat's ass what these people think about him and how they underestimate him. Alden has already earned the respect of Alis and Esherdi - so he cares little for opinion of strangers who don't have the foggiest idea who he is as a person. But Stuart... he wants to be believed and listened to, yet he is invisible to them. Only Alden sees him as he is.

ImNotHere

[are you running away?” “This is walking,”] Stu, ennemy of figurative speech N.B.: @Sleyca I noticed after pasting the text that there is an extra comma after walking.

puppy0cam

I'm starting to think Stu is going to eventually be driven to a point where he chooses to cut contact with the majority of his family. As Evul said, he is getting tired of fight. And when he does, he will choose flight.

Krae Z Hand

"don't you dare let your breath fall upon the house where he studies human things" Damn, that's a threat and a half! That's as terrifying as the bloodthirst.

Zenty

Amazing chapter. Really loving that we're getting more Stu POVs.

Winter Holiday

The relative social expectations are similar to military officer/enlisted division. Officers and enlisted are not to be friends in the same chain of command to avoid having the officer favor their friend by saving them and sending others to die.

PatienceHoney

I think the common knight college is Dawnstep, where Emban goes. Several of us compared it to going to West Point while Leafsong is more like Yale.

puppy0cam

Imagine Stu deciding he needs space from his family and decides to live on Earth for a while. The call Alden would have to make to Lesedi Saleh. "hey principal Saleh. I have an extraordinarily peculiar request."

WannaBeATree

I'd cut them some slack. Similar things might have happened dozens of times in the past and had the same conclusion. (in the household) The closest comparison would be a concerned parent trying to convince their daughter/son to cut contact with their current boyfriend/girlfriend and their group, because they can see signs that it won't end well. (crime/drugs/etc.) It does not help that Stu reacts similarly to such a teenager.

Rodmin

This is such a good chapter! It mostly happens with chapters that include Stu that I have to instantly reread the chapter because I like it so much!

WannaBeATree

It really sounded like arguments a person makes who never thought about them, but only repeated what they have heard. True contemplation is exhausting though. I've heard/read somewhere that if a person answers you within 5s, then they - biologically speaking - could not have thought about what you said. The only thing they can realistically do in that time is retrieve information from memory. While it is possible that they have actually thought about the topic in the past and remember/speak their own(past) thoughts, it is much more likely that they repeat the thoughts of other people that they remembered. So if you ever talk to someone and they pause for more than a few seconds before answering, you know their answer is original and not a copy-paste from something in their memory! Sadly, if you do it yourself, it might come of as weird, since you break the flow of the conversation. I guess one could try saying: "That is interesting, let me think about it" first?

rhekke

That is accurate, according to the historical record, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".

zombie

You made me realize I see three ways this arc can end: 3. Bad ending: Stu affixes right now 2. Normal ending: Stu goes to live elsewhere in Artonan space (weird uncle?) 1. Funny ending: Stu transfers to Aldens school for a few months

Glitter Rabbit (C)

Evul's loving lies are such a cool highlight of the chapter

Kemlion

Lol Evul

WannaBeATree

A relationship worth weaving "right now". I don't fault them. Most, if not all of their arguments seem to be centered on the future, because all of them seem to believe that Stu's future will be so lastly different, that he humself could not predict it. To BIND himself now, before the greater binding(knighthood) might seems foolish to them, considering Stu will have (in their view) more and better options for binding in the future, if he makes it. From where I stand, I could see them feeling that the friendship vow could increase his chances of the innitial affixation success, but reduce his chances of staying alive afterwards with each subsequent one, due to all those valid arguments. And those arguments ARE valid. I feel like too many people ignore that and focus on their feelings "right now". None of the household know what we know about Alden. For them, it is a guy who chose the rabbit class, developed a hero complex and has such high expectations of himself, that he needs mindhealing to not run into an early death. They try to 'make' Stu healthy and see him pursuing a person that would encourage Stu to be 'unhealthy'. What I actually find strange is how little Stu seems to be trusted by his family, considering how proper and excelent he always is. Maybe they think of him as a plant, that needs protection from harsh sunlight to properly grow?

Mortch

This was just so very good, thanks Sleyca 😊

Jazehiah

“I can taste why our ancestors only hunted them as a last resort.”  That bad, huh?

Terrestrial_Biped

I don't think it's "not allowed to be friends" but "can't be friends". Gorgon had a line way back when about how two people can't possibly be friends when one person cannot represent themselves as they truly are and the other could not understand even if told.

Pete

The argument is more similar to arguments about dating in a hierarchy then children.

Robert Mullins

I suspect Stu's first trip to earth is imminent and will be done via preservation by Alden on his return home.

Sébastien Kingsbury

Evul is such a fun character. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the family take on Alden changes when the secret is finally out though

Poiuy

I cannot believe I ended up laughing at the end of that chapter…

Aspiring Moth

I need Evul and Big Snake in the same room. that would be a conversation for the ages

PatienceHoney

*** ...What did he think of the Rapport, of wizards, of Artonans, knights, flatseed candy, toilets, the ryeh-b’t, and contract magic? *** Toilets? Umm... is this something a human should have strong opinions on? If so I need to up mine to something beyond, "I like when they work, are super clean, and appropriately private."

Glitter Rabbit (C)

I mean...if the USA and anesidora have not adopted bidets in the soup timeline, yeah...maybe. super clean and hygienic alien toilets would fascinate me.

Lyssur

I get the impression that most of the family see Alden as an eccentricity, and don't mind Stu spending some time with him, but feel that he has isolated himself from future votaries, knights, and wizards due to it. So while Alden as a person is admirable- Alis-art'h went through a lot of effort for him for a reason- as knights/votaries they can't see how one can form a close equal relationship with an Avowed, where by contract, knowledge, society, and power, there is a huge inbalance of power. It didn't seem that Jozz and others warning Stu about the impracticality a lifelong friendship tattoo would bring as necessarily being against their current friendship- only that it is unlikely to last as Stu's position changes, and obviously, a friendship contract might be too much. Esh-erdi and Lind-otta seemed to think that the friendship was also likely not to last through life challenges. But they didn't speak out against the formal friendship, and I can't recall if Alden ever mentioned weaving a friendship to them, or if they are assuming that there is no formality to it (sorry, too many chapters to check!). There is some impression that the family thinks Stu is not trying very hard to make connections with future votaries/knights/wizards, which feels very unfair. Though in this case it was someone who had been away for three years saying so- I hope that family members Stu interacts more regularly with are more sensitive to Stu than that. I wonder what the family's reaction would be if Stu tried to make friends with a member of the common class? Probably not that different.

Hallow

Thank you for the chapter! I love seeing more art'h perspectives. Also I feel so bad for Stu, he was so excited to share something with his brother and his brother reacted so badly. Also, there's so much going on when you consider that Alden has so much in common with Stu that they're not aware of. I really want the reveal to happen, I mean it'd suck for Alden probably but like, I'm genuinely getting so worried for Stu honestly, like I'm afraid that something bad will happen if he doesn't have at least one person he can rely on. Like idk what Stu acting out would even look like honestly, like would he impulsively bring forward his affixation? probably not? but just the thought that something bad could happen...

JJ Hunter

Multiple Stu POV chapters! What riches. One starts to realize just how unusual Ryada-bess was in taking Stu and Alden as they presented themselves, and listening and asking questions instead of immediately advising. I am glad Evul is paying attention to how worn Stu is getting. My heart aches for "Stu was used to being very different from everyone he’d ever wanted to be friends with"; in some ways, Stu is used to being the alien one in every group he joins. How restful to spend time with someone who accepts him just as he is, who has been through a highly unusual experience of his own and understands how hard it can be to try to (re)integrate afterwards.

Francis

"You can’t interrupt Alden’s studies and his preparations for Yenu-pezth, and you aren’t allowed to enjoy his company and hear how deeply he has considered your painting in the top library. Because he will sit there sincerely admiring your sacrifices, and you will sit there thinking about how odd I am for having him over. He…he deserves better than that.” I just suddenly shed a tear when I read this

Enkelados

So the arths generally don't have a good long range magic sense. Is that why they can grow so powerful? Because this muted sense their bindings aren't as painful as for others? And because Stu is the opposite they think he can't handle it?

Maren True

I so want Evul and Aimee Velra to meet. I feel like they would instantly hit it off. The universe isn't ready . . .

Aspiring Moth

Another point towards the Stu goes to earth arc theory we've been throwing around. The Christmas holiday starts soon, and so the apartment will only have Lute and Alden in it. I'm sure Haoyu won't mind Stu borrowing his bed

Lyssur

Evul's take of the Here-to-There events with Olget were very, very interesting. So going to the executioner was an extreme response- ha, if Olget had gotten caught by any other wizard, he probably would have been much better off. And Alden is given very little free agency in this accounting of events- I wonder if this is some xenophobia or just past experience as leading Avowed talking. Well, if they assume Alden is going around being managed by Stu like that, no wonder they assume that they can't be real friends. Though part of it is probably that she is assuming that Alden went to be support for Stu, while Alden took it to mean to be as close to a votary as possible as an Avowed to be. And he was successful at it. So low expectations, and not enough info as to what transcurred, I suppose. And confirmation that the family was hoping Stu would appreciate being a votary on the trip. Funnily enough, if anything, I think Stu feels more secure in his choice that being a votary is not for him, though he could be very successful at it. Alden is the one between the two of them who would have become a votary instead of a knight had he the option (it's almost exactly what he described a support hero to be). But he doesn't. Alden solved so many problems and was so attuned to making the experience as perfect for everyone as possible. He did get lots of time helping people and working with Stu without the hated celebrity aspect, which bodes well for him getting closer to Stu and choosing to join him in fighting chaos.

Zenty

I don't think he would need to borrow anyone's bed. He can just do his usual floating burrito magic beside Alden's bed.

ghostb1tch

I… that was so good!!! I love Stu chapters. holy fucjggjf I honestly don’t know how many more times I can leave comments that say some version of “this feels like too far, they are fully pushing him away” in regard to his family. I am firmly with Evul on this one—I am quite certain that Stu’s exhaustion with them is about at its breaking point. When only the human takes him seriously and does not belittle him and did not only support him as long as he wanted to be a wizard and did not keep him out of extremely important Artonan traditions that they decided he did not get a choice in—obviously Alden was not there for these things, but Stu’s thoughts about this painted the picture well. He shares so much with Alden—Alden does not see him as “weak” or “broken”, he sees him as a peer. And Stu’s family have fully lost his trust and not even considered it important enough to earn it back. Now he knows that even if he capitulates and chooses not to affix, his family does not and will not and never did see him as healed and capable. I think them not even trying to repair things is what sucks the most. They really do not see Stu’s trust in them as something important; they don’t believe it weighs enough for them to try.

Flying Goat

Blood makes for excellent soup.

jose sanchez

I love the final sentence. Applause for Evul 👏 👏

Jack Slash

Stu chapter Stu chapter! Love all the little differences of expressions and thoughts he has. This was a really good chapter.

Ers20

Food-drugs, contract tattoos, and beheadings! These crazy teenagers.

JennP

He doesn't. Even after Evul told him all that his response was "he'll be fine."

Tauwetter

Reading the chapter, I am reminded of Alden’s time at leafsong. He contemplated the power dynamics of wizards and avowed and was sometimes uncomfortable with them. While I believe Stu and Alden can overcome that, I understand the families concern and I am not sure it would be possible if Alden was a normal avowed. However, the way they go about expressing their concern is super counterproductive…

zetorian

Honestly, I could 100% see him bringing forward the affixation and then fleeing to earth. Its often very shocking just how far 'rule follower' types like Stu will go when they finally decide that following the rules isn't helpful.

PeasOfCrab

It’s great! Thanks! Yet another long chapter in one of the more difficult voices for you to write. Congrats on this success!

Elle

I have found proof Artonans aren't like humans in this chapter: “But I don’t know enough to argue with you.”

Baines

oh this chapter is amazing, that ending lmao

Jeff Wells

Yeah the key sticking point is that Stu as a Knight would have both the power and potentially the duty to send his best friend to his death at some point in the right against Chaos. That would always be sitting in the background of the friendship and it's a heavy thing to deal with.

Janny

It makes sense. Stu’s family is looking at this friendship from the perspective that Stu will become a wizard/votary whereas it seems knights have more leniency on making alien friends. They all still think Stu won’t become a knight so they’re looking at it from a different perspective.

Jason Harpster

Just a thought...... The whole deal with the binding hurting is that you stuck your magic in a blender, had it pureed so it fits the spell perfectly, and now it hurts when you bump the edges of the spell. So what happens if you actually learn the spell perfectly? Like legit learn it perfectly...no cheating? The bindings are all masterworks of wizard shut-ins...neet basically....who devoted their entire lives to the spell they made. So it is something that can be learned.

Brandon Steele

> Ryada-bess taking time away from them. She’s still gone. What is this referring to?

Joey T.

It took hours for Stu to perform his spell for Alden. Affixing will bind his authority into the shape of the spell & make it automatic. Different facets of the spell become available as the skill strengthens.

Dax

Evul, living up to her namesake, even if just a little xD

Guus van der Borg

"Jozz, like many members of their family, was an existence who wasn’t naturally aware of anything going on beyond his own spot. He had to make a deliberate effort to perceive the nonphysical world around him" I wonder how much this says about Alden's 'talent' level. Alden can sense beyond his 'spot'. He's done it many times by now. And we know he's more talented at authority control than Kibby. And we know Stu is both very sensitive and a very talented wizard. Is sensitivity linked to general wizards talent? I doubt it is in a simple way, since the other Arth's are apparently excellent wizards. But I still wonder. Is Alden actually exceptionally talented even amongst Artonans? And if so, in what ways? And how much of it is due to being Gorgon's successor? (Tangential rant) I always wondered how much of Alden's authority Gorgon actually sacrificed. Would Alden be an A rank, or even an S rank if he didn't become Gorgon's successor? Pointless wondering, but I do like to think about it.

LordJJJ

I can't wait for Stu and the rest of the Rapport to find out Alden understands Knight's sacrifice better than any alien or avowed because he can feel his own authority himself and is his own budding wizard. My bet is when Alden needs to bind his authority again, it somehow it gets out. Wasn't the estimation that it would be around Christmas time? That he needed to bind his free authority again? 🥲 I wonder if it will coincide with Stu's choosing day / binding day

burlindw

They're beautifully condescending too. Loving Lies are explicitly something adults tell children so that the children don't need to face harsh realities. Evul basically told him to his face that she thought he was childish and incapable of handling the truth.

Jim

The entire family is so concerned about the inequity of the friendship. What struck me today is the inequity is there it's just not the way the family perceives it. Alden is a few oaths and a quick wardrobe access away from being a Knight of the Mother (affixation tested and Mother approved) where as Stu still needs some of those oaths and to affix and survive. The family will never convince Stu to change his mind about affixing or his friendship, but if he did decide not to affix, Alden would be the more powerful/respected in the relationship and it would be unequal. I hope when Alden finally becomes a Knight they will approve more of him, just hope it's not too late that a ton of damage was done to their relationships with Stu. If they really did damage the relationship so much maybe the next siblinghold would be on earth.

J Reynolds

Some time in June-August 2041 is the time Mother thought Alden would have to next affix.

David

In a way, the rite was a kind of pre-affixation. Alden’s authority was sacrificed to give him the potential to become a prodigious wizard. It’s as though he has a hidden Skill that doesn’t agitate his free authority. It’s a real shame Mother couldn’t come to terms with Gorgon’s species. That rite has incredible implications for the chaos struggle

Chas Becht

That ending was incredible. Evul is the best.

Michael Hubbard

Ryada needed to go and get some kind of knight counseling after everyone found out she was having doubts about her Affixation and concealing them from those around her.

J Reynolds

Who else is getting the vibe that Artonans are basically treating Avowed as dogs? Not as a pejorative. Like literal dogs. A well-trained dog can be a super useful tool: seeing-eye and other service dogs do stuff that vastly extends their owner's capability. A dog like that is one that you love and respect. For what it is. You don't expect one to carry out a conversation with you, or have opinions about Shakespeare, or differential calculus. The dog is not, and cannot be, your equal. If we run into somebody who truly expects people to treat their 'furbabies' as if they were their actual children, we shake our heads and think unkind thoughts about their crap judgement.

Matt DiMeo

Art’h family is bad at authority sensing. Remember when the primary had to hold Alden’s hands? I wonder if they are unusually successful at becoming knights because of this.

chumponimys

"He said it very shrilly. How shitty." Stu internalizing English curses enough to use them in his internal monologue is perfection

Anthony Lutz

Alden being not being a votary is not because he doesn't want to be supportive, its he cannot be one. One of the primary roles of a votary is the ability to cast spells on behalf of their knight to meet social oblgations. Alden cannot meet this for 2 reason, hes a kindergarten wizard, and hes got bound authority which makes him incapable of performing the task even if he was not ignorant of spellcasting.

Eddie

Do people think that this build up is leading up to Alden spilling his secret to Stu before their affixations? I was thinking that the date of Alden's confession seems to have been signposted for when Stu affixes, but delivering such a shock to Stu right before affixation might not be the best idea. If Alden confesses now, Stu would have enough time to stew on the revelation beforehand, and maybe that knowledge would help calm his uncertainty.

Charlie

New theory: Unique type avowed are those who, like stu if they had an authority sense, would be highly sensitive to the nonphysical world around them and would not have to strain to perceive it.

Peter M

The ending was amazing and I really enjoy the other viewpoints. This story is building to something spectacular and what a ride to that point. So emotional, love all the world building and however it plays out is going to be amazing!! 😍😍

VioletSummit

It does track with their magic-based caste system, you could even extend it to say that they treat their own mundane citizens the same way, beloved but simple creatures who deserve affection and protection but are still definitively less than. Really, the entire Here-to-There was essentially just the plot of The Aristocrats, with an old lady leaving half her fortune to her favorite pets instead of her lazy son.

Francis

Yes, they might believe that he will die, and therefore want to protect him, but that is the whole problem. They do not trust his judgement or his strength. And that is a really shitty thing to hear from family.

Francis

Normies will never understand how difficult it is for a weirdo to find a true friend. Stu's family will never even think that Alden might be the only one Stu CAN befriend, but it might actually be true

Clint

Seems plausible — but also another reason to think Stu will be less successful as a knight, which is scary.

Francis

I just realised now that Jozz automatically grouped Stu with the "votaries". He isn't close to seeing him as a potential knight. Imagine the day Stu says he is going to the Welcome End party and some family members realise it is actually happening. They are going to do some drastic shit. I think sooner rather than later, Jeneth is going to have to come and give his household a good scolding.

BeepBoop

That is probably the case. Initially, he didn't even put himself on a time limit to make a decision. Then, he quickly crept the time limit closer. Furthermore, one can procrastinate by waiting to do something until the due date approaches, but Alden is a serious enough person that I think he would berate himself if he waits until then. I would understand if he did because he wrapped up so much of his emotional struggles in it, but I also think it is possible that Alden might end up taking it even more seriously because of that. There is a chance that this means that Alden spirals, but from Alden's thoughts we have been privy to and his recent discussion about Stu with Boe it seems likely that Alden is becoming more comfortable over time in a way that would make it easier for him to share whilst also seeing more benefits (in terms of solidifying his Stu friendship and Stu having knowledge which could help him make other good decisions) that might overcome the risks (especially when Alden has become increasingly aware of the inevitability of the reveal of what is really going on with him practically no matter what life choices he makes as seen in some other scenes, which changes the calculation).

Andrew Simpson

Evul is such a shit starter, I love it. Also very insightful and witty.

jayson

Poor Stu. He sneaks into his own house to avoid questions that hint at Alden's differences and instead he's pounced upon by Jozz.

jayson

I enjoy the parallel to the last chapter where Alden was telling Rel that Stu deserves better and here we have Stu reciprocating with Jozz.

Lola

I find it interesting that Stu was uncomfortable with touching his brother’s authority, due to some sort of incompatibility. I wonder how he felt when touching Alden’s authority? Didn’t that one knight call his authority charming? I wonder if Mother knew this when she encouraged Alden to befriend Stu?

Protected

Stu is tired of fighting - Is this foreshadowing? What will Stu do when he's had enough of his family's antagonism? I suspect a possibility - if at all feasible - is that he'll try to affix without their approval or knowledge. Alden's wizardness is revealed when he saves Stu's life by steadying him through the process.

Started this novel last week. Now I'm here, and I'm sad.

Matt V

“He’ll be fine…I didn’t say anything new to him. Apparently.” So the logic is, everyone else has been harassing him, so what's one more harassment? Your little bro just blew up at you, my dude. Did he seem fine? Because it seems like he's at the end of his tether, and considering what's at stake, you'd think his family would be a little more concerned about that. The family seems to be pushing and pushing, waiting for Stu to crack, and Evul sounds like she's the only one concerned about what Stu cracking actually means for him. He left knight/votary school and went to Leafsong to get away from his peers who pushed him too far. I think we may be about to see him leave the siblinghold to get away from his family who is pushing him too far. Considering Stu seems to have only one friend at the moment, that doesn't leave him with many places to run to. I'd love a Stu on Earth arc, but I can't even imagine the ramifications that will have on Anesidoran society. Imagine the boon to Alden's classmates getting tips and help from Stu on understanding and developing their powers. Never mind the political ramifications.

Ian T Hathaway

The way you play yoyo with my heart is mean-mean. I go from almost crying over Stu to giggling and kicking my feet for Evul. It can't be healthy, Sleyca!

KB

Wow! You were speed reading to be here so soon!

KB

Yes! I love her more every time we see her

KB

I LOVED this chapter! Thank you so much, Sleyca! I need Evul to deliver more loving lies to people who deserve them.

KB

"The differences were present, but Stu was used to being very different from everyone he’d ever wanted to be friends with. And their similarities were so many he marveled at them." Just you wait, Stu! Even more similarities are coming :)

Neal Mayne

I don't think it was something real that made it uncomfortable but emotional he said it had been like that since Sina died. I'd imagine it's like getting a hug from someone who you used to be closer to and now the contact feels a little awkward.

Neal Mayne

Alis is going to get back and see how the family has been treating Stu for being friends with the avowed that she personally approved of. She's going to put people in their place.

WannaBeATree

They think about the future, Stu thinks about the present. Usually life changes once one becomes an adult with responsibilities. I think Stu's family believes that the responsibilities will have them drift apart. Thinking about it, Alden is currently enjoying his vacation time. This will not alway stay the same. How will their friendship develope with Alden being summoned? How will it go with Stu joining in the fight against demons? It is also not like they can test it out right now, before deciding. Maybe comparable with a new couple deciding do live together or go on vacation together? Lots of unexpected friction can come up. Or like marrying within a couple months of knowing each other. Though Alden's secret tattoo skills will bail him out here.

Neal Mayne

I wonder if personality has any bearing on authority sensitivity, because if so it would make sense a family that has a hard time being aware outside of their own existence would have a hard time understanding someone else's view point which is a part of what Stu's dealing with a loving family that can't understand Stu's unique position.

Dalton C Vieira

Thank you, Sleyca. You bring so much joy to my life.

C. Adkins

YO! Amazing chapter! I am loving these interactions and I noticed something interesting. A few chapters ago, we had Stu think “ryeh-b’ts . . . Had teeth and claws as well.” In this chapter, we have “they are thirsty for blood.” And we’ve seen so many “yell in the throat” chapters. Like guys, Sleyca, I am loving these little reminders that there’s some fight in our favorite rabbit. God I can’t wait for Sunday’s!

C. Adkins

Right? But also, if there was a video of Stu and Alden standing on the balcony, stating they will not unsay what was said, and Stu’s comment about his mother, I bet it would 100000% look like they were expecting heads to roll

Gorane

Im quite surprised to hear that Evul is this much older than Stu. I had gotten the vibe of 2-3 years older sister but if he is significantly older ("I wasnt around for you growing up) than the brother that is alresdy 3-6 years older than Stu then in human terms evul would be around 25-30 while Stu is 17

Nedardo

Evul is the same generation as Rel. It came up a few chapters ago, and Stu explained that it was understandable to think that she was much younger than she is.

C. Adkins

I’m so ready for ,“I am the first human Son of the Mother. My name is Hn’tyon Alden the Ryeh-b’t. Nice to finally meet you”

Antony

I'm starting to wonder whether Stu will end up as Alden's votary.

Chloe

I always wonder whether Kiv'bee would want to

Zachary Sloan

While it's obviously good that Stu is more open-minded than most of his family, it does seem like he's deliberately avoiding thinking about the differences between the two of them (which seems like it's important if they want to truly get to know each other and build a lasting relationship).

Chloe

Could be a chicken or the egg scenario too, if your authority sense was weaker, it led to you being less aware/understanding of others and shaped a lot of who you were

Jazehiah

So, Stu hasn't felt up Alden's authority because he wants to be polite and not ping people he "knows" can't sense and respond properly. ... I can't help but feel I could have phrased that better.

Yohann DG

Evul is my favorite character after Alden. More Evul, please, moooaaare ! Thank you for the chapter, Sleyca, it's always wonderful !

Blorcyn

This was incredible and so so so so fun. That is all. No longer comment from me this week, it would only say my first sentence less well.

Taylor Young

"Watch your back. They're thirsty for blood." That's S-tier trolling and S-tier writing.

Mag1cM

It's kind of interesting how the family put all the credit for the Olget situation on Stu (kinda obvious that they would) even though fixing the problem and providing the evidence against Olget was basically all Alden. And knowing Stuart he would have made a point to his family about how much it was all Alden.

A Free Skeleton

Yeah, even Evul can't give Alden any credit for agency. She doesn't think that differently from the rest of the siblinghold, she's just more strategic.

I think that when Alden shares his secret, he should get Stu to find out what happened to the previous non-Artonan wizards, and how they were treated while they were around. I mean, if even one human in 10M can develop an Authority sense, that's still a million human wizards. That's more than the population of Cyprus and a bunch of other countries IRL. You'd think that this would be enough for a human magic tradition to occur. I would think that another species could do the same. And yet they aren't there anymore. Worrying.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

I'm one of many people trying to articulate exactly why the way Stu's family is behaving feels so egregious, despite coming from a supposed "good place." If they believe Stu's chosen friendship has insurmountable difficulties, it's time to try to understand why he nonetheless finds it more surmountable and more worthwhile when compared to pursuing friendships with the people they wish he would be compatible with. This is like, family and friendship 101. When someone is doing something you don't understand, either try to understand or let it go. Listen with the benefit of the doubt that it's possible they understand their own lives and their own thoughts better than you do looking from outside. Maybe what they need is other options or more information or support, maybe they actually lack common sense on the matter, but you lose nothing by listening first except for a chance to demonstrate your ignorance. Evul, and now Emban, seem to understand that Stu's friendship with Alden isn't an indication that Stu has no understanding of the difficulties, it's an indication that Alden is worth the difficulties to Stu. Others have acted as if, if Stu would just put in the effort, he could make friends. But Stu is clearly willing to put in the effort. The effort he puts into this difficult alien friendship shows that the problem with his other friendships isn't about Stu's unwillingness to try, as if he were a stubborn child refusing to cooperate or be open to other people out of lack of maturity. Evul was trying to argue Stu out of knighthood when we first met her, but she's had her say and understands that repetition isn't helpful, it's pushing. She's chosen to have the relationship she can with Stu as he is, however long that lasts. Any of his family who truly believe he will die should be treasuring the time they have left, not still trying to argue why they're right. Sometimes it seems people really would be better off if they changed to someone they aren't. Olget we can treat like a child in need of instruction, because of the real harm his selfishness has caused. He needed to have some choices made for him, because he tried to take choices from others. Joe and Hazel deserve restrictions for the same reason. It's not an insult to Joe to say we want him to grow and change to be a better Joe. But Stu's family's problem with Stu seems to be that he's... too Stu. They want to control a choice that everyone else is allowed to make with the same amount of knowledge and preparation he has, because they think he's too Stu to be allowed it. They think he could make more appropriate friends if he would just be a little less Stu about it. They want him to change into someone who does what they want him to, not grow into someone who is an even better Stu. Is there actually something wrong with Stu being so Stu, to the point that his choices need to be controlled as if he'd done something wrong like a bad wizard or a child in need of instruction? Half his family is clearly saying "Yes. Be someone else, it's for your own good." It's not a wrong sentiment in every situation. An executioner can say that to an Oglet. An Alden can say that to a Hazel. For a family relationship where someone's just choosing their own life without imposing anything on anyone? I think many of us recognize it as the kind of thing that can end that family relationship. The death of a thousand cuts feels so real.

Elle

Alden being asked how to justify summoning avowed straight to death, probably ties close to those conversations too, "He doesn’t mean to hurt them, but he does. And they do not mean to reveal that he still seems broken to them. But they do." The fact a random wizard could summon Alden to his death, no wonder Stu decided Wizards need to be held to higher standards.

denatured

I don't think Mother called them wizards, did she? I thought she said knights. It's possible the other Avowed knights weren't actually wizards, just very strong skill-users who swore the right oaths. The current requirements include and authority sense, but it seems the way knights are organized and treated has been through many changes. And the original Avowed skills were for fighting chaos alongside knights. Maybe some of them got promoted.

Sky23

OMG he's so protective of Alden! Literally screaming at anyone who suggests Alden is less than him. Never have I shipped anything more than I shipped these two. It's simultaneously so deep that it makes me think about love in ways I never have before and also the most heartwarming adorable dynamic ever.

Insomniac

Does Stu have an especially sensitive authority sense, or does affixation dull it? The latter raises some interesting question while adding further to the plight of the highest onus. If they have dulled authority senses, then Lind-Otta sensing Alden's undirected tap is very impressive. For one, or both, of them. I find it both funny and sad how his own family doesn't realize that the more they fight him, the more they alienate him from them, the more they drive Stu into Alden's arms. Even funnier is that he isn't keeping Alden away from his family so much as that nearly all the art'h's are simply unworthy to of meeting him. It is a rare privilege to be allowed in his presence. Jozz really did step in it though. "Everyone around you disagrees with you, but it will pass" sounds an awful lot like "you'll eventually just given in/up", which is an impressively shitty thing to say. Honestly can't wait for the day when Alden's secret is revealed. Stu is going to have an eternal "I told you so" to hang over their heads. It does make me wonder if Stu finally reaching his limit will be the catalyst for Alden telling him, or even outing himself. He'd probably jump in to build Stu up even if it came at great personal cost. Our silly rabbit simply can't help himself. Evul is growing to challenge the spot for my favorite character. She's been a hoot from the moment she was first introduced and hasn't led up since.

Matt V

“An alien who’s contractually obligated to serve wizards can’t be your friend. Not the kind of friend you want, at least. He’s not your peer. You’re avoiding your actual peers, or being avoided by them, because they can’t agree with you. And you’re avoiding friendship with the people you’ve met at LeafSong because you can’t agree with them." Stu, you've tried making friends with your actual peers and that failed miserably. Then you tried to make friends with the next closest peers you could manage and that also failed. Your family has also chosen to isolate you. But you're not supposed to keep looking for someone who will accept you as you are! Clearly this is a sign that you should change who you are at a fundamental level to better fit into the box that we've all made for you. Then we'll like you just fine! This attitude does further clarify how Artonans view avowed. They are servants and nothing more. When news eventually comes out about Alden, a lot of Artonans are going to be faced with the harsh truth that they're not quite as special as they all seem to think they are. The only real difference is that Artonans are born with an extra sense. If they can find a safe way to give humans that sense without sandblasting them with chaos, that'll really shake things up.

Matt V

This also makes me wonder whether all of Stu's peers independently came to the same conclusion about his decision to become a knight. Or were they influenced? If it comes out that his family pushed his peers into refusing to acknowledge his choice, that's really going to push Stu over the edge.

Joel Wells

I love how Stu’s reaction to anyone who has anything negative to say about Alden is to declare they aren’t allowed to meet him. Like it’s the worst punishment he can bestow upon them.

Matt DiMeo

Evul is my third favorite artonan.

MWF

True. All the ones who do get the honor are ultimately charmed despite themselves.

BelligerentGnu

Fuck yes, Stuart and Evul.

Stuart Brown

Interesting that Stu has had to stop making subtle authority greetings because his family is insensitive to them; I doubt this would be a problem with Alden.

BeepBoop

I do think that in some important ways Stu thinks less about this naturally than his family or Alden (let alone Boe) do. He does think about it, whenever Alden brings up something under this category he gives it much thought. He is likely adapting his friendship contract brainstorming around these matters in the ways his mind summons them as important. Yet, there do seem to be gaps. Perhaps when Alden eventually shares his secret with Stu this will push them closer and also push for even more productive consideration of how they can weave a friendship in their difference circumstances?

Alex Scriber

I… don’t remember who Veln is. Are they one of the parents?

MWF

Ok but in some alternate universe ruled by comedy Stuart could just summon Esh-erdi and say "Ok so repeat that one more time, so we're all on the same page." I can't even imagine what Esh would do but somehow I don't think "politely agree" would be it.

Aspiring Moth

yes, we met so many at once to the point that we don't know much about them other than Olorn. Veln is one of the other named parents though, some don't even have a name

Wait a minute. If the food drug can actually damage the pleasure centers in the brain, then what about Natalie's roommates? We even got a comment from Emilija how pathetic others are for not being able to take a meal. Already building a resistance. Are they at risk? If Artonans hand out dangerous skills like they handle common sense dangerous objects, it could be a problem that will creep up.

Aspiring Moth

okay adding to my earlier idea. the apartment is going to be empty except for lute and Alden for the Christmas period. what if both Stu and Boe get smuggled to anesidora and stay in the dorm? by means of teleporting with a preserved person sized suitcase, and hitching a ride with a cat respectively. Lute is hardly the sort to complain over an unregistered when he himself wants to live off the island, and he isn't scared of wizards either. Alden has been wanting Boe to give Stu a chance, and they did talk about him sending the cat back. this is the perfect opportunity for the world's weirdest sitcom apartment scenario

Aspiring Moth

Boe just needs a way to end his catspace adventures on a schedule. Maybe Stu could help with that

Gaffer

Stu’s family is gonna make him asphyxiate before he affixiates

Julkur

If I understood it correctly, Nat's skill doesn't break the pleasure center un the brain. It was only an argument some brought up to make Alden share his food

Stuart Brown

One of the reasons I enjoyed this chapter so much was because it explicates further a situation I thought I understood. This chapter shows that ALL of Stuart's recent decisions weigh down his interactions with his family. We readers know that Alden's qualities make both of these points of argument moot, and we can see that whether and how Alden confides in Stu will be highly consequential for his future. Finally, this chapter makes Emban's choice to invite Alden to the Here-To-There more of a statement.

Shawn

You know what really scares me? I'm reminded how when I was about 15-17 my parents kept trying to guide my future and I was sooo OFFENDED every time they brought up that playing trumpet professionally wasn't a viable, comfortable experience; dancing around the fact that I was good but I wasn't exceptional. How much of an uncomfortable truth is Stu choosing to ignore here?

Shawn

hmmm? I'm not sure we have any reason to believe that. The only things I can really think of him feeling outside of himself are : Esh and Lind's happiness, Chaos (which presses upon him so may not count), the communal casting... which is inherently communal.

JennP

I agree. I read it 3 times. Loved it every time

denatured

Ugh just think of all the Anesidoran teenagers who automatically become adults when they affix. So many young people making life-altering decisions without a fully formed frontal lobe.

foldedcorners

It is interesting that readers tend to ignore the advice from Stu’s family, because it’s not purely altruistic. Like, these are the most experienced knights in the universe and they’re telling him if he affixes he will die. Stu and Alden, while mature, are also moody teenagers. They’re unsure of themselves and their place in the universe and that’s not a good kind space to be in when choosing a life altering decision. We’ve had a lot of dialogue in a lot of chapters about Alden’s internal debates and yet still people push for him to move on to the next step in knighthood

Frozen

Its interesting that especially in the last few chapters Sleyca has repeatedly brought up the idea of authority embraces, and now we know Stuart has particularly sensitive authority. Does Stu notice Alden moving at some point? Is the authority embrace a meaningful or transformative moment in an upcoming chapter? I feel like this part of the story is begging for a timeskip (gasp!), so I'm curious what, if anything, these latest chapters may be leading to. Also, I feel ike its easy to forget (as I think many of the in-story characters do) how f***** the relationship between avowed and the wizards are. Thinking about Kon, I know how I would feel about having a lifetime employer that I would have no choice in that was trying to make sure no other employers ever even talked to me, and could potentially compel me to act if I refuse. Its not exactly slavery since there are theoretically rules and customs protecting them, but its at the very least migrant workers relying on wizards having morals and caring about their image (which we've already seen they often don't). I think its impressive Sleyca is obviously aware of this, but weaves it seamlessly into the story, and how people have kindof just gotten used to the idea, and are dazzled by having powers.

Jess

I keep saying, this story is so much fun I forget for long stretches at a time we're dealing with an interstellar colonial system that requires indentured child soldiers as tribute.

MWF

Just because they might be right, doesn't mean they're helping anything. They mean well but that's not the effect they're having on poor Stuart.

Jo

“You’re upset?” Alden: "He deserves better,” Stu: "...and you will sit there thinking about how odd I am for having him over. He…he deserves better than that.” ---------------- I like the symmetry.

Rob

if Gorgon has the ability to grant wishes by eating authority of the wisher, does he maybe have the theoretical power to remove affixations? Is future super Alden being set up to save Kibby from her affixation?

Dr.Pixle

i was going to say maybe save stu incase his affixation goes south as his family fears

Kim Enteiu

Stu, absolutely done with his family. Alden, experienced in smuggling people via teleportation. The Informant extending Alden‘s prize package as he watches the hilarity ensue.

Casey

The Informant is just like... it's probably just best if I let the most important Artonian bond with a human boy. Meanwhile... A certian overly enthusiastic mailbox decides to give them gifts for christmas on his progeninator's behalf. All the lost cool mail goes to them now!

Young Youghurt

I expect Alden to reveal his magic status to Stu as part of an act to express confidence in Stu's choice to become bound/knight. Perhaps even during the binding.

So rereading this chapter before the new one comes out while listening to the Disobedient song from Steven Universe and like, it worked so well with Stu telling his brother off. God tonight is going to be good. I can feel it in my bones.

Faces The Wind

Alden appears to be more sensitive to his own authority than the average Artonan, and that guy was even a knight so its not just the affixation. Interesting.

jg

The utilitarian greatest good metric. Mothers AIness shines when asked her opinion on enforceable morality... You wouldn't like it ...

JJ Hunter

What it is about agreeing, agreement, etc. that's so important to forming friendships for Artonan wizards? Is this another facet of their inclination to forming contracts, and seeking out people who will help them assert their dominion over reality? Is the ability and willingness to provide authority vitamins an important part of how wizard friends help stabilize each other's existence? Humans from Alden's culture usually talk about friendship springing from liking each other, not necessarily agreeing with each other, but we also have the concept of being likeminded. Respect, understanding, trust - all important elements for deepening a friendship and sustaining it. Is openness to hearing each other out and potentially being persuaded as much as persuasive - i.e. being inclined to find agreement together - also important?

JJ Hunter

I keep coming back to how Stu and members of Stu's family keep thinking of their division as a matter of disagreement over Stu's chosen path, whereas Alden named it a matter of trust, asking Rel if he thinks Stu can persuade them to trust Stu again. It feels like the fundamental pain here is not that Stu's family thinks another path would fit him better, but that they aren't respecting his right to choose his own path and they aren't acknowledging his maturing strength; their actions keep trying to cram him back into a box of 'child in need of instruction' rather than soon-adult starting to take on adult responsibilities. Stu was not born under the same birthtree as all his other siblings, but he is a child of the Rapports all the same; he should be free to chose how he will serve, if he chooses to remain in the Rapports and serve, and he should be able to expect his teachers and family and peers to support him in his choice. Why don't they trust Sina Stu to make the best decision for himself? Do they fear Sina didn't, and Stu is trying to be someone other than himself to live for her memory?

Anthony Lutz

I considered that perhaps that aside from natural ability, it could be something to do with the presence of chaos during the formative moments of authority awareness. Stu was conceived in a place of high chaos, and alden was bombarded with no protection from it for months. The average wizard would not experience this, and even when they go into chaos they would be in situations more akin to Alis's travel dome, in a safe space only travelling into the chaos in a more prepared and protected way. I think this would give people far more awareness outside themselves more easily. Edit to add: maybe the chaos component isn't nessesary, just someone else willing to constantly interact with your self. Alis comented that she would be coddling her babies authorities, but feared she might crush them. combined that with the general "dont pounce on others" could mean most artonans are not exposed to enough to give them the natural sense for looking outside themselves.

Sleyca

Anyone checking this space for the next chapter: I expect it to take at least three more hours to revise.

세희

One question, what's the artonan adult age? I know that our 15,16 is about artonan 12,13 but I can't remember the exact age when an artonan becomes a adult.

Rodmin

Does someone know in whixh chaptet Alden saw the painting in the library?

Solarnis

Crackpot theory: Are we going to see Hannah return soon*? *Narrative soon, probably not for a while IRL - Jozz's team was assigned to a patch of chaos for 2 years and have just returned which seems to roughly match the timeline Hannah has been gone - Jozz's views while harsh might come from more personal experience. Was Hannah summoned on their or another team due to the breakout? Was it her who thought the elders were keeping them there on purpose? Was it an outsider's viewpoint? - Chaos Op info is likely restricted to anyone from Earth - Narratively, it'd fit into the whole choosing season as well. Right now, the humans who're close to Alden have no experience with Chaos and those with experience like Big Snake and Haoyu's parents are at an arms length socially. He'd be able to hear from someone closer to his age and who he admires making their voice louder. I think Hannah would initially dissuade but ultimately accept and support Alden in his path which would be a good foil to the Arths as well.

Rodmin

My prediction is also that this will lead Stu to visit earth for a bit. Maybe the healer will recommend it or help Stu to convince his family that it would be good for Stu. Then we could have many nice things: - Stu meeting Alden's friends -Stu interacting with the other Artonans on earth, Esh and Lind, especially Esh wo always seems so hyped when hearing about the blooming friendship between Alden and Stu. Maybe some scene with that diplomat guy who wants avowed to not be fighters, he surely would be extremely stressed meeting Stu or something. - So many cool possible interactions of humans interacting with Stu because it's different to meet an adolescent artonan, a friend of alden, than only seeing those wizards on tv repairing anesidora.

EK

I think 206, its in the herdcreatures chapters.

Anthony Lutz

I think it would depend if which class status your talking about and what adulthood signifies, the lower class would likely have a distinct age of adulthood, but the wizard class seems to weight this depending on the role being filled. Stu and the young knights had a lot of rank importance and were not considered children for the event, its possible that to achieve adulthood as a wizard you need to get your diploma, or just become a hn'tyon or votary. some reference: Stu is "about the same age" as Alden, at 16 years 9 human months, which is 13 artonan years according to Esh when talking to lind about him.

puppy0cam

A thought occurs. Sealing a dimension means to prevent that part of the universe from interacting with the rest of the universe... but could you seal a person?

puppy0cam

it would make sense for dimensional sealing magic to be derived from a magic meant to seal an individual threat that the people of the time wouldn't have had the capability to properly destroy.

Jonathan Price

I think Yipalk corp. took her to put stasis fields on equipment they took from Joe's lab. You know, the trip where they left Kibby behind to die. I can't see her going along with that. Or them putting up with her not going along with that.

payforthat

Stu takes his Votary duties seriously, so I dont think any visit that conflicts with that would happen. Plus their seems to be an intentional barrier for young Artonans interacting with avowed. Even Stu is banned from calling avowed and I cant think of us ever hearing of a young Artonian visiting earth.

Anthony Lutz

keyboard naptime perhaps?

puppy0cam

I would assume so. But I'll give it another hour before I go to sleep.

Joel Wells

I think one of the things that bugs me most about Stu’s family is they “Know” that when it comes to knights, sometimes all it takes is a single word of encouragement or discouragement and that can have a huge impact on whether someone is successful as a knight. By being so pessimistic, and creating doubt in Stu, they are setting him up for failure. I get that they want to persuade him not to do it in the first place. But they have to know on some level the damage they are doing when Stu goes forward with his plans to affix.

Aspiring Moth

from their perspective, he was set up for failure from the beginning. and it's not like they're unreasonable in that assessment. on top of that, his likely inevitable failure will have consequences beyond himself, such as risking the most powerful Knight taking his rest

“The next half year. He’s planning to be home for a while then. Stu focused on him, reaching out to sense him. “You’re home because you need to bind again,” he said.” On 2nd reading, I’m wondering if Stu already knows about Alden and only just waiting for Alden to say it. Not sure if this point has been raised by previous comments.

cloudmire

I do both think so. He'd be able to tell how close Alden is to reaffixing, the affixation is not secret, but authority sense isn't detectable in the same way.
