Stopped it, thought Alden.

His mood swung all the way to excitement. For a second, the problem felt small enough to be solved by the speed and strength of his shield, as if having whipped the pig into position between flying fist and detestable face would earn him a victory notice.

Then, the next second jerked him back down into the havoc. Details burst into focus. The man who’d attacked Bash-nor shot toward the ceiling of the tent. He was roaring, arms and legs swinging, one foot slamming into the support frame so hard part of it bent and came loose.

Levitated.

Lute must have thrown himself backward away from the danger because he was now on the outside of their group, mouth open. He was holding his hands out like he intended to do something, but they weren’t actually moving.

Mrs. Nancy shouted, “No, Graham. No! Calm down!” And she threw a knitted glove up at the flailing man. It hit his back softly and landed on the grass just as softly, a merry yellow on green.

Drusi-otta stood behind Mrs. Nancy, holding the wand that was levitating Graham. The votary’s umpteen necklaces were still in motion, as if she’d just stopped after a sudden move. She was glaring at Zeridee, who was now on that side of the sales table, too, sprawled on the ground and staring up at Graham in horror.

There was a lot of shouting from within their group and some from beyond it. In the background, everywhere Alden looked, Anesidorans were frozen in place, backing away, or grabbing their kids. He saw one woman turn and run.

“Get this absurdity away from my face!”

Bash-nor’s high-pitched demand brought Alden’s attention to his own body. His right arm was fully extended. The pig’s tail was gripped in between two fingers.

His mouth was open. Maybe he’d been about to shout a warning? He shut it.

Barely made it, he realized. If I was any slower…. Way to go, reflexes.

The ambassador’s nose was almost touching the pig’s rounded belly.

“It’s a shield,” Alden explained, pulling the cotton candy creature back toward himself. “I was shielding you from that punch.”

In those first moments after the incident, he felt no anger, and he no longer had any intention of making Bash-nor look bad. He read the ambassador’s outrage about his pig shield as confusion because confusion made more sense to him than outrage. An Avowed had just leaped a table and taken a swing. People were scared. This was all terrible, and if Bash-nor was yelling about absurdity it seemed like a natural reaction to the whole messy picture they were standing in.

“I didn’t want you to get hurt,” Alden said. “And the pig is the only thing I have. You’re all right, aren’t you?”

“If a wizard needs your assistance, they will summon you properly,” Bash-nor hissed.

“But there wasn’t any time for that. That man was coming at you fast. And what if he was a high rank? You could have died.” Alden frowned. “I don’t want you to die.”

Just be fired. Because you’re a huge jackass. “If a wizard needs your assistance….” “Do not ignore a wizard when they speak to you….”

That’s right. I was mad. I am mad. Is this piece of work really complaining that I helped him?!

“Besides. I can’t be summoned right now. I’m on leave.” Alden’s mouth hadn’t quite caught up with the reality of the situation or his swiftly shifting emotions.

What just happened?

Why?

“Please. Please forgive him, Grand Senator. Please forgive him, Ambassador. Wizard.” Mrs. Nancy’s voice trembled as she addressed the last word to Drusi-otta. “Graham lost his fiancée. In the floods. He hasn’t been well. He hasn’t been all right since it happened.”

Above her, the man stopped flailing. He hung there, arms and legs limp. If Alden couldn’t see him turning his head, he would have thought Drusi-otta had knocked him out.

This was so unnecessary.

Servin-ith was trying to talk him down.

Everyone saw the guy was losing it. Even if we didn’t realize he’d jump straight to physical violence, we saw he wasn’t okay. Bash-nor couldn’t spare a speck of effort to say, ‘Yes, your loved one was very brave. Sorry for your loss’?

Now Mrs. Nancy was begging Bash-nor for forgiveness. And Servin-ith…where was she? She’d been right beside Alden when it all went wrong, and now she wasn’t here. He looked around again and spotted her approaching. From behind the group.

Teleportation?

He hadn’t seen her disappear, but he assumed some object in her possession could allow for it. Or as a Grand Senator it might be as easy as ordering the System to relocate her immediately.

The irony of that, when the start of all this had been a request for more emergency teleportation.

This man has just put a fist through his own life.

Many things were hitting Alden at once. Like the tiny demon bugs of his nightmares, a whole storm of little pains struck him as he stepped back, making way for the Grand Senator.

Graham wore a jade hoop in one ear. Alden could see it now, with the guy’s hair hanging toward the ground. He knew what it felt like to fumble with the backing of that earring, trying to figure out how to take it from a dead woman’s cold ear without ripping the lobe.

I could have just ripped it out. She was dead, and I’m sure her body got pulverized by the next wave. It’s really impractical that I tried to be careful. Next time…

A kind grandmother who had invited him into her home was trying not to cry. Her mouth strained against itself. Her chin wrinkled.

I’d better not go to her house for Christmas dinner. I’d better make sure to tell her I won’t, so that she won’t have to worry I’ll show up. I don’t want to ruin a good thing for other people.

Lute was lowering his hands. He was trying to catch Alden’s eyes. Establishing that they were in this together.

That’s a comfort. Thanks, Lute. But you look really scared. Sorry about this.

The sounds were different now. Music and the microphone for the globie ceremony happening at the Christmas tree were suddenly coming through loud and clear because there weren’t as many voices in this area.

I liked the Christmas market. It felt like human magic.

Servin-ith looked alert. Serious. Both of her pink eyes were flitting around.

“Please,” Mrs. Nancy whispered. “I’m so sorry.”

“You did nothing wrong, and you can’t speak for another person,” Bash-nor said. He almost sounded nice. Alden was sure he was trying to sound nice. But there was something else to it. Nerves, perhaps.

Servin-ith couldn’t be pleased right now.

Nobody’s pleased right now.

“Grand Senator,” said Bash-nor, giving Servin-ith a tiny bow, “if I might make a recommendation—”

“Ambassador,” Alden interrupted, giving Bash-nor a very deep bow of his own. “I…”

I don’t know what I’m going to say, but I don’t want to hear your recommendation. I want you to have to shut up.

I want you out of my Christmas market.

Off my planet.

“I…am so sorry I tried to shield you.”

I have to add something to that so it doesn’t sound like I wish he’d gotten pummeled.

“I don’t know why it made you angry,” said Alden. “But I apologize.”

“Why are you speaking right now? The Grand Senator—”

I am a stupid child.

“Because you yelled at me,” said Alden, still in the lowest bow of his life. He couldn’t see anyone’s face. He watched a blade of grass, crushed by his shoe, straightening slowly.

He wasn’t as nervous as he imagined he should be. He wasn’t sure what to call his feelings now that he’d bowed and started a conversation he couldn’t envision the end of.

“I didn’t yell.” Bash-nor sounded exasperated. “Don’t—”

“You spoke in a harsh tone. I thought you were mad about the pig.”

“I have my own personal enchantments for protection. I did not require help from a young Ryeh-b’t. Now, be silent and—”

“I hear you,” said Alden. “But it didn’t occur to me that you were prepared. I could tell you didn’t understand that that man, Graham, was upset. So I thought you wouldn’t be ready to defend yourself.”

This is all I can think of.

It isn’t that great.

But I guess it was my final bump.

“I’m very able to tell when people are upset,” said Bash-nor.

Oh? Isn’t he lining himself up for another one?

A new voice took the shot before Alden could. “One would think that was an important skill for an ambassador to have, wouldn’t they?”

Esh-erdi!

Alden wanted to look, but he had the impression that some of the people around him were bowing to acknowledge Esh-erdi’s, and presumably Lind-otta’s, arrival. Whether he ought to come out of his deep apology bow only to do a “Hello, you are a knight” bow was too much to figure out.

“Grand Senator, I offer my help with representatives of the local law,” said Esh-erdi. “We’ve met some of them. They handle things differently than we do.”

“And I offer my help with the young ones,” said Lind-otta. “Shall I take them from your care?”

“She means you.” A hand grabbed the back of Alden’s shirt and pulled him upright. Esh-erdi’s thick brows were raised. “You can apologize for risking your safety for Bash-nor’s sake later if someone wants you to.”

Alden wasn’t sure what to make of that. Was Esh-erdi mad? Was he not?

He glanced toward Servin-ith to see if she was mad or not.

“I’m sorry our time together was cut short in this way,” said the senator. “But I think Hn’tyon Lind-otta would be better company than me for now. It was a pleasure to meet you, dear. And you, Lute! Thank you for showing me your favorite places.”

They were dismissed that swiftly, and there was nothing to do but go.

Alden felt like he was leaving behind unfinished business as he and Lute followed Lind-otta, but no matter how he looked at it, none of what came next should involve him. He was worried about what was going to happen—or not happen—to Zeridee, Graham, and Bash-nor. But he wasn’t an Artonan wizard or one of the festival security people who were now converging on the area. And before the three of them had made it far down the row, a police officer wearing the Sway symbol on both her uniform and her interface tag rushed past them without glancing their way. The Brute from the High Council appeared a minute later, and he did look for a moment in their direction, giving Lind-otta a nod and then continuing on toward the scene of the incident.

If Lind-otta hadn’t taken us it would only have been a minute or two before some other authority figure pointed out that we should go.

At best, he and Lute were witnesses, but there were more important witnesses to be had. Not to mention recordings.

“Is it all right for us to just leave like this?” Lute asked hesitantly. “General…Hn’tyon Lind-otta?”

He feels it too. They’d been lighting matches to apply a little heat to Bash-nor, but fire had suddenly leaped up around a third person they hadn’t been aware was waiting for an excuse to explode.

“Did we annoy the ambassador too much?” Alden murmured.

“You can speak at regular volume if you want,” Lind-otta said. “No one will hear us, and we’re visually distorted. Of course it’s all right for you two to leave, Lute. Not only all right, but best. You have worked hard and accomplished what you set out to do. Now your presence would only put your success at risk.”

She dropped back a pace so that she could walk between the two of them instead of out in front. Her coat was seafoam today, the same color as Esh-erdi’s auriad.

Lind-otta had a smile that was more soothing than mischievous, and her facial features were quite different from her partner’s—a smaller nose, wider set eyes. They really didn’t look much alike, but for a moment, Alden was struck by her Eshness. As if he might easily mistake one of them for the other.

Is it just because I learned more about what they are to each other from Stuart? Or is it a real part of what they are?

She was watching him.

“That wasn’t the kind of success I wanted,” he said. “A man tried to hit Bash-nor, and considering how hard his fist struck my shield, it might be fair to say he tried to kill Bash-nor. If I’d known something like that would happen— ”

“It’s not our fault,” Lute said. “Nobody could have predicted that.”

“But if… ”

If I’d done something different.

“Taking responsibility for everything is only a little better than taking responsibility for nothing,” said Lind-otta. “You will be able to act more effectively when you learn to accurately assess your own importance in a situation. You are like my Esh when he was younger, I think—too inclined to see flaws in yourself whenever something around you goes wrong. Waiting for him to understand this was a very time consuming process, and I am old. So I’ll have less patience with you and tell you clearly that blaming yourself for that man attacking Bash-nor is absurd.”

Am I doing that? Maybe.

“What will happen to him?” Alden asked. “Graham.”

“Servin-ith will want to show our care for Earth’s Avowed by ensuring that he receives treatment for his grief and rage before engaging in some kind of service in a visible location. She is unlikely to give in to any requests from the Anesidoran government that the Avowed be punished according to your own laws instead of ours, so the most likely outcome, based on my understanding of your government’s tendencies, is that the man will serve the sentence Servin-ith finds fitting, and then when she is done with him, he’ll return here and serve the one Anesidora prefers.”

“At the very least, he’ll get a long ban from family neighborhoods and events,” said Lute. “You can’t do a thing like that in a place like this.”

A place like this, thought Alden, glancing around.

After a short walk, they were already in a part of the market that looked like everything had a few minutes ago. The crowd parted for them and Lind-otta, but it was a normal crowd. And even if their silent, visually distorted presence created a minor interruption, everyone went back to playing and shopping as soon as they’d passed.

“It’s always just one layer deep,” he said.

“What is?”

Lind-otta’s question made Alden realize how odd his comment must have sounded to people who weren’t inside his thoughts.

He recalled the surreality of his first day back at school after his parents had died. Even as a young child, there’d been something so strange about running out the door toward recess with everyone else—peak school day excitement that had been real to him, but thin. Like a fun sticker he knew could be peeled away at any time to reveal something ugly.

“The problems,” he said. “Right now we’re only one layer away from a man who lost his fiancée. And Anesidora’s only one layer away from wherever the worst place on Earth happens to be today. And Earth is one layer away from chaos…I meant something like that. I was just thinking.”

[Lute: Okay?]

Alden was sure he meant, “Are you okay?” based on his furrowed brow.

[Alden: Yeah.]

Better filter myself a little more.

“You are like my Esh in good ways, too,” said Lind-otta. “Stop here, and look at me for a moment.”

Alden stopped walking.

“We enjoyed our trip today.” Her voice was warm, and her gaze was soft.

“I’m glad you did,” said Alden. “I know I interrupted it.”

“We enjoyed the rising of a sun that shines on many imperfections, and when we go on other trips to places that are much darker, we will remember that all of this is, as you put it, only one layer away. You can’t fight every darkness or bask in every light. Accept this, so that you can choose the right battles for yourself and fight them at full strength.”

“How do people know what the right battles are?” he asked.

“How hard was it to earn Alis’s commendation?” she replied.

He swallowed.

“I see. And would you do it again?”

“Yes.”

“Would you endure that same struggle for a different outcome?” She sounded curious. “If it would remove a terrible ambassador from Earth, for example, which might save innocent lives as well over the coming years.”

Lind-otta waited.

Alden made her wait such a long time that Lute started waving at him from behind her.

“I can’t lie to you about it, Hn’tyon Lind-otta,” he said finally, “and I don’t want you to hear the truth.”

“Why?” she asked. “Do you think I have never answered no to such a question? I have many times and will many more. I’m sorry you are ashamed of your answer, but it’s good that you know what your answer is. Not every battle is yours, Alden. I believe you’ll recognize the ones that are when they come.”

She started walking. “You both did well today, regardless of the unexpected outcome. You showed Servin-ith a less <<curated>> Anesidora and a less controlled Bash-nor. Both of which she needed to see. Especially if his temper is that close to the surface. If he can’t be diplomatic with a Grand Senator standing at his shoulder, then I don’t know what circumstances would improve his behavior. Perhaps he’s one of those people who loses all perspective when he’s in a position of power. Esh and I were stunned when he decided to <<nip>> at a man who Servin-ith was trying to calm. Her pride is different than his, but she’s got no less of it.”

“Do you think she’ll fire him?” Alden asked.

“Yes. And astonishingly he doesn’t seem to know it yet. He should have been apologizing to everyone instead of complaining about your efforts to protect him.”

“He did make me regret it.”

“Don’t,” Lind-otta replied. “The amusement Esh felt when he saw you defending Bash-nor with that food toy was delightful. After his initial alarm.”

The pig was still safely preserved under Alden’s arm. It had a happy face. “I think that guy was a mid-rank Brute of some kind. We got in front of him fast.”

“I get half credit since the pig is mine,” Lute said.

Lind-otta smiled. “Show me something bright in this place,” she said, “and then I’ll leave you to enjoy the day as you were before you decided to help Zeridee-und’h with her battle.”

Alden and Lute sat at the back of the ferry, on the uppermost deck, watching F-city recede through windows so clear that it felt like they were looking through an opening in the side of the boat instead of glass. The seats were just a little too small for Alden’s taste, but they were well cushioned, and they would heat up if you asked them to. The two cases of mover discs he had bought from the Fetunan imports store were serving as footrests. One would be Jeremy’s Christmas present. Alden was going to experiment with the enchantments on the other set until he completely figured them out or destroyed them.

Haoyu’s skateboard had been purchased, and Lute’s gift to him would be the custom paint job on it since the only way to get the store’s art guy to paint a “party badger” design a few days before Christmas had been barter. He’d wanted the cotton candy pig and a picture of Alden holding the pig in front of some of his skateboards to prove it was authentic.

That was how Alden and Lute discovered the incident was rapidly spreading around Anesidora. Lute was currently on the internet, watching whatever was happening to their reputations in real time.

“Are you sure I can’t tell you what I’m reading right now?” he asked almost desperately. “Because— ”

“I’m sure,” Alden said. “I told you not to look.”

“It’s not like most of it is bad. Most of it isn’t really about us. The pig save was funny, and people think we— ”

“Shhh…I’m texting my foreign friend.”

He knew it couldn’t all be good because Emilija had already sent a message suggesting he put her to work tonight deleting rude comments and messages on his Trime account.

[Alden: Stuart, I’ll be back at my dorm soon. It took longer than I thought. I know the time is wrong for you, so if you’re asleep we can talk when you wake up.]

He was debating whether or not to send a message to Boe. Something like, “FYI, that doesn’t count as an act of heroism. It was like that thing that happens when a doctor hits your knee with the little hammer. My arm shot out to intercept that guy on its own.”

I’ll save it for when he hears the news organically, Alden decided. Rushing to tell him about it makes it sound like it was a bigger deal.

“Why do you have self-control?” Lute grumbled.

“It waxes and wanes. I’m sure I’ll have to look and see what everyone is saying about us tomorrow, but the longer I delay, the greater the chances are that someone else does something really bizarre and steals the spotlight.”

“So you admit you’re bizarre.”

“You were right there with me.” And having him there had made it all more doable.

I’m going to have to buy him that giant stuffed pig after all, aren’t I?

Lute swiped away whatever he’d been looking at. “Lind-otta seemed nice.”

“I think she is.”

“That thing you said about layers…”

“I was in a weird mood right after what happened.”

“Me too. The first thing I thought about was how the ambassador could take revenge on that guy…can I tell you the news about him at least?”

“Bash-nor? Sure.”

“He’s gone.”

“That fast?”

“Yeah, that fast. There was no explanation, and they didn’t even let him give a goodbye speech. Servin-ith gave one for him. If I wasn’t in the know, I’d think the guy murdered somebody, and the Artonans were trying to sweep it under the rug. But that thing you said about what’s going on one layer away… ”

“Yes?” Alden asked.

“It was good,” said Lute. “Real. It made me think of Haoyu.”

Oh, thought Alden.

Haoyu’s mom was expected back early Saturday. Sometime tomorrow, he should get a call from her, confirming that she was safe and that she would indeed return on the planned day. This was a tension Haoyu often lived with and rarely mentioned, the same as when his father had been with the battle group at Matadero.

“You’re right. That’s one layer away.”

“I want to go back in time and throw all those die dice I made into the ocean,” said Lute, pressing his combat boots harder against the top of the mover disc case so that it rocked.

“If you get time travel powers when you become a hyperbole, tell me,” said Alden. “But for now— ”

“My ears turn off automatically when you try to jinx me into a hyperbole.”

“But for now,” Alden said more loudly, “let’s just help Haoyu distract himself until she’s back.”

“I want to slap a Peace of Mind on him, but he won’t let me.”

“Every time you offer, you’re probably reminding him that he’s stressed. We’ll think of something else.”

I felt myself unexpectedly tearing up when lind had Alden look at her. Thanks for making this story that means so much to me Sleyca

Harmonica Man

It’s funny that Alden doesn’t see how heroic sounding “I saved that guy I didn’t like out of pure reflex” is. I get the feeling Boe isn’t going to agree with his view on it lmao.

Thanks Sleyca!!

Weaponized politeness: intentional edition! Alden just keeps kicking unpleasant people off of Earth without getting dirt on himself. Truly, he is the best janitor.

Awesomepossum15

Glad I couldn't sleep for this, even if it's gonna be hell in 4 hours. But "people think we-".... They think what?! What does the Internet think Sleyca!?!?

FeathersFavoriteNYC

A much better, more mature and realistic ending to the incident that I imagined. With a power display without fanfare, as befits really powerful people. Plus, a great school for Alden and Lute both. Sleyca rocks! My only remark is that we have not yet seen any snow 😉

Informer's info blackout will make Alden appear even more mysterious and intriguing when 500 requests get auto-rejected

Is it wrong that I now picture Bash as Invader Zim? "WHO DID THIS? Who dares to soil my normal boy head with this... PORK COW?"

Guus van der Borg

Esh grabbing Alden by the scruff of the neck like a kitten was the best part to me. Very much enjoyed the idea of that :) "Kitten Alden needs to go now. Gotta keep the kittens safe."

PhoenixPax

I half expected the chapter to begin with a leisurely Boe interlude!

Atati Seven

That was beautiful resolution for complicated situation. "Polite banishment" is really cementing as Alden's actual superpower. Who need to punch enemies when you can just shoo them away.

Terrestrial_Biped

Y'all notice Drusi glaring at Zeridee? Why do you reckon? Explanation 1: Why aren't you casting to improve this situation, I *know* you can. Explanation 2: Why did you put your stupid self in the line of fire, you *know* you can't do anything here.

Lystic

I was ready for the whole tent to come down on top of them and the chaos that would bring.

Gregory

Alden getting the jackass to admit that he knew exactly what he was going to cause was an extremely strong play. If someone takes a swing at your ambassador, that's a problem. If your ambassador encourages someone to take a swing, for personal reasons, that's a very different problem.

Kooikerhondjelover

There was a Gorgon comment there: putting someone in a public place to serve as punishment. Hope we learn about him soon. Alden could ask Esh .

Mundane

I wonder what kind of questions will be raised about just how much power our plucky preserved pig wielding protagonist has when someone calculates the maximum force behind that punch. If any video of the save exists it must look so surreal. Also the reaction speed is eyebrow raising as well. Faster than the official bodyguards. When you are thinking about how you are only one layer away you are more prepared than a boy scout. Great resolution chapter <3

Thank you for the chapter. That was very satisfying. I loved how Lind's view of Alden's actions with the pig came down to Esh being entertained. Now I'm looking forward to Lexi's reaction.

thank you for the amazing chapter, it was delectable!

skinnywhite

Thank you! I loved seeing Alden have a moment with Lind were she was directly addressing his self image, in a more mature and kinder way than Boe did, but about the same core things.

People who annoy Alden sure have a strong tendency to get banished. Two from Earth entirely, one from his apartment. You could even argue, indirectly, he caused one to get banished from their mortal coil. I'm very interested in learning what the internet is saying about him this time, especially if it prompted Emilija to suggest the need for deleting bad comments - though to be fair even the most positive coverage probably still gets those comments because it's the internet and trolls are gonna troll. Still, he's gone viral enough times now that I think any chance of him fading back into obscurity has sailed on him. And the company he's had in each of those videos is only going to make people even more curious about him.

Ploddingpanda

Alden is back with his devastating politeness. It's an art he has mastered.

I wonder just how many of Alden's classmates are going to see that footage of him bowing and apologizing for his intervention and see the malice in it. I'm confident that Haoyu and Lexi are going to realize that was him doing his damnedest to get Bash-Nor fired, and probably also Kon, but who else? (Also Stuart, but he isn't Alden's classmate. Yet. Growth mindset!)

Clint

Yay! Woke up way too early, but there is delicious soup. All seems to be going well, but the count-up to Snow continues. And Bash-nor is badly wounded politically, but is still a petty and powerful wizard. I’m remembering the petty and powerful wizard from the here-to-there and wondering what Bash-nor might do in his much-aggrieved state; what wand he might break or what political grenade he might lob. And how it will earn the title of Snow. ❄️🌨️☃️

Their POV: Alden, the B rank Rabbit who argued against and repeatedly interrupted an Ambassador in public and on camera… and won, after two knights intervened on his behalf Winston must be shitting himself

_“What will happen to him?” Alden asked. “Graham.” “Servin-ith will want to show our care for Earth’s Avowed by ensuring that he receives treatment for his grief and rage before engaging in some kind of service in a visible location._ This bit caught my attention. Isn't Gorgon also being made to serve in a public location?

Terrestrial_Biped

I mean, the "alien asskisser/race traitor" card is obviously going to get played. There are gonna be people who look at the fact that Alden defended an asshat Artonan over the fact that he defended a person from bodily harm or that Alden probably substantially mitigated the punishment that will fall on Graham for this.

Terrestrial_Biped

Or, you know, broken. As tends to happen when you punch something much, much harder than your own bones.

>“But for now,” Alden said more loudly, “let’s just help Haoyu distract himself until she’s back.” >“I want to slap a Peace of Mind on him, but he won’t let me.” >“Every time you offer, you’re probably reminding him that he’s stressed. JJ Hunter

I love the subtle implication that Esh put his own protections on Alden that got triggered when Alden threw himself in front of a potentially mortal blow, summoning the knights to make Bash-nor's day Even Worse.

ImNotHere

I would quote Stu on this one : [“If you weren’t exceedingly creative with your guesses then you were probably wrong,”]

WannaBeATree

Not to mention that Boe explicitly told Alden, that if he hears something from the news first, he'll asume it happened a lot more often.

abowden

I guess it wasn't realistic, but I was hoping for a bit more excitement than that. All wrapped up too cleanly and quickly. I guess with the people who were there, or a teleport away, this is about as far as it could have gone. Still, I was hoping for some more drama than just the obvious things Bash-nor was going to say. Still, the aftermath was nice enough, Lute getting even more insight into Alden, and I can't wait for the 'sorry I missed our call, was busy getting the ambassador fired' conversation with Stu. I guess I do like the bitter sweet vibe. he got the ambassador omega ultra fired, yes, but he never wanted a grieving man to get pulled into it and have his life fucked up even further, it's nice that Alden appreciates its not all good.

I wonder if Zeridee took another one of her unobtrusive little side trips over to encourage that upset Anesidoran she didn't know was Graham to go over and tell his story to the Grand Senator? Maybe Drusi-otta was mad because Zeridee had a hand in interfering when Graham was originally keeping himself away from the Artonans knowing he was teetering on his temper's edge.

Clint

Bash-nor really is a terrible diplomat. I’m imagining how a competent ambassador might have commented on how wonderful humans are — Artonans gave them magic powers and they turned it into superheroes. Graham’s fiancée and so many others ran headlong into danger to help others during the unfortunate incident. “Why look, even this child, a rabbit, is training to be a hero, and his first instinct was to protect others, even with this absurd candy toy!”

Anthony Lutz

"I was, and yeah, that fast. There was no explanation, and they didn’t even let him give a goodbye speech. Servin-ith gave one for him. If I wasn’t in the know, I’d think the guy murdered somebody, and the Artonans were trying to sweep it under the rug." Bash-nor getting the assumptions that Hazel should have instead of just fleeing in embarrassment with Aulia giving the goodbye speech.

Kahandran

Zeridee's viewpoint of Alden as a clueless child really came back around to bite everyone in the butt. Hopefully she isn't penalized too severely, but based on Drusi-otta's reaction it may not be good. I'm sure Alden will realize the effect this might have on her situation soon. But honestly, who expected such a small flaw from a side character to spiral into a snafu of this scale? I love how this story is most often a result OF the characters, rather than something happening that the cast needs to adapt to

Sébastien Kingsbury

Zeridee is going to think Alden is an even bigger over achiever after this

Terrestrial_Biped

It seems to be pretty standard for the Artonan justice system. Joe was also serving quite publicly as a lecturer. Olget got community service as well.

Kahandran

I think it went about as far as it reasonably could go. Remember how the public reception can be more important than the event itself. I'm sure the drama will be pouring down for chapters to come XD (maybe trickling tho, at times we least expect it)

Dervish

Thanks so much for the chapter. NOW I can get to sleep. I'm so glad to see Bash-nor getting the result most fitting to Artonan senses of justice (and a suggestion about their take on how the grieving husband should be treated). And Lind-otta's clearly got a good idea about how human justice systems will probably respond. And now to get these youngsters out of a situation they're clearly not ready for. I just hope Zeridee doesn't get in too much trouble for making a plan that didn't survive contact with Alden.

JJ Hunter

Besides. You can't summon me, I'm on leave. I'm currently unsummonable. :) is *such* an effective accidental rebuttal to Bash-nor's ingratitude because the reason Alden is currently on leave is for mental health recovery after he earned an extraordinary commendation for Exception Bravery In The Absence Of Obligation. Alden's whole thing is he will help *in the absence of obligation*. Bash-nor complaining about not wanting Alden's help unless he summons him and commands his service is the exact opposite of what most Artonans admire Alden for.

Kahandran

I know how it all happened. Bash'nor is a Winston fan... look at it through this lens and it all makes sense 00

Tarry Higgins

Radish Rabbit, Pink Pig, Parries Punch

The Ox

So Bash-nor gets banished from Earth. I wonder what other punishments he gets for ruining the Grand Senators glad-handing tour? Does he get to keep his summoning rights for Earth? One assumes a wizard senior enough to become Earth ambassador normally has summoning rights to nearly any resource world he wanted. If Grand Senator Servin-ith is in the "Avowed are precious idiot children" camp, which she seems to, would you see the vindictiveness in Bash-nor and protect those delicate little humans from him?

WannaBeATree

Oh noooo!!!! :O ...about telling his story to the Grand Senator... The Grand Senator might try to locate the person who retrieved the items of his wife to help soothe his pain and anger, as a public stunt! :O I hope she finds out the story before she makes that promise to him.

WannaBeATree

Well, to be fair, from a political viewpoint this is a 100% win for the knights. Even it there was some collateral damage.

Keven Leigh

I like the fact that Aiden is comfortable enough to slip with his ability and "sense" how hard his preserved object was hit. And estimate how hard he was hit in the presence of someone who I assume suspects Aiden of being able to use magic

WannaBeATree

I think you'd need to be deemed responsible enough to summon AND knowledgeable enough of the species you try to summon. (like one test for each) If he is going to loose some of his rights, I am not sure if it will be the species or generall ones. I doubt he will lose either. For one, that would be too much of a face slap. For another, the system would not pick someone who is angry at him and/or will piss him off anyway, so there is no real need to remove his rights. Instead of removing his drivers licence, he will be prevented to drive on some roads, so to speak.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Alden's burdering skills have levelled up (again). In the Velras party he reacted, with trepidation. In the hop party he burdered "Must be nice" guy the same way as Winston: stepping over him and not looking back. With a disappointment how such people make the world less perfect. Nothing personal. In this arc, he plans a campaign, co-opts allies, studies the lay of the land, strikes with intent at every opportunity, and contemplates the consequences. This may even be a rank up to his most visible skill 🙂

Kemlion

Aw Lute regretting the dice 🥹

Phlinn

So bash-nor has a problem with avowed acting in absence of obligation. He must really hate Aldens commendation.

Lucy Severine

I understand Alden not wanting to read them, but I hope *we* get a chapter of seeing various internet comments and characters reacting to the video of that!

JJ Hunter

Oh. Oh! This might be the dangling thread that eventually blows open the whole 'dead Avowed in Bash-nor's greenhouse' scandal, isn't it. The internet is going to look into exactly who died in Punta de Luna that night. And if Graham's full story gets told, they will know someone found the bodies of Graham's finance and her father, and try to solve the puzzle of *who*. There are quite a few people who can attest to Zeridee sticking around to help her neighbors evacuate, and a few people who would remember Alden had been there helping too. How long will it take the internet to put the pieces together from Alden being at Punta de Luna that night, to Alden being at Matadero for healing afterwards, to the Artonans protecting the name of who exactly found those dead bodies? Of course, Liam (and likely Liam's whole family by now) knows Alden had been evacuating on foot carrying a mortally wounded ambassador's assistant after they were both assaulted in the ambassador's greenhouse. If people are saying shit about Alden on the internet in connection to the ambassador incident just now, what are the chances Liam will stay quite when he could speak up and educate them on how heroic Alden is?

ppbrro

Joe's advice about acting stupid coming in clutch

WannaBeATree

I hope Alden doesn't forget to apologise to Nancy. Even just for his own peace of mind. On another note, Alden's Jeffy-energy is inspiring. I had to remember that Alden was also pissed at Jeffy when they first met and how easily Jeffy managed to turn Alden, without changing his actual behaviour. :)

Swinter

I think you're mildly abusing the word "Horror". It comes up with some frequency and in this chapter it doesn't really fit perfectly. chaos, surprise, shock, there's other words that would better fit. I can see Alden being Horrified, but there's not really any Horror going around. The reason I say "mildly" is because the word Technically fit. While that is true, it's essentially The strongest descriptor you can give. If you're using it for a comparatively mild event such as this, then you're devaluing the word for when it really would count. When Alden saw people getting killed by Chaos? That was horrifying and horrible. Now you're equalizing that experience with a considerably less serious event. (Now if the brute had Succeded and had pulped Bashi Nors head in, then yeah, the word would fit again. But since he failed...) Anyway, just my thought of course and something I'd advice keeping in mind. Other than that, enjoyable chapter as usual.

JennP

"They were lighting matches to apply a little heat..." I liked that. This is always such a well written story.

WannaBeATree

Oh yeah, great point! Alden was also nice to Liam and invited him for training, and had him have a great time. Liam is also realy into the news, because he knew about a protest of a handful of people in front of the school. Hopefully (for Alden) the next chapter won't follow the same pattern as Ripples -> Waves. (Because we might be all out of Snow)

WannaBeATree

I wonder whether he deserves a gift basket for all the usefull advice. Would be funny, politically speaking. Implying to everyone that Joe was the mastermind behind this stunt. :D

PeasOfCrab

Jel-nor’s gonna be pissed (maybe). Also, some lovely falling action. Feels like a lot of tension unwinding very slightly, with things still ready to snap in the background at any moment.

Tarry Higgins

Oh, I can see a plot, 4 months from now (in story months). Sleyca has laid it all out. Sleyca says "Gone from Earth at least! " 4 months from now when Alden is one more summonable, he will be summoned by Bash-nor right nto the path of a bullet! As threatened by Joe all those episodes ago...

Jazehiah

Yeah, but Alden was just seen with four stupidly important Artonans, so they'll probably just chalk it up to that.

denatured

I don't think Lind-otta fully made sense of Trash-nor's actions. I can only think the ambassador doesn't really believe he is an ambassador. Maybe he thinks the title of his post is a polite fiction for the humans' benefit. After all, you don't need to engage in diplomacy with beasts of burden. Maybe he thinks his real job is head boss wizard in charge of the human slaves. Then how he acts in front of the Grand Senator makes more sense. He doesn't think he's out of line, because he thinks this is how wizards are supposed to talk to slaves.

Jazehiah

He is skilled, but he can't quite do it on demand. He will master the skill eventually, but he's got a ways to go.

Ricky Kukowski

Fair enough, but this is Alden’s perspective and I think the 1 layer away thing shows that this incident made his mind jump to how close the chaos really is. I think the word choice does more to show Alden’s mental state than it does to devalue to word.

puppy0cam

it's chapters like these that you get reminded that Alden is still a kid, and not a fully mature adult who knows what they are doing.

denatured

I really appreciate Lind-otta pointing out the layers are bidirectional, and that lovely things are just above the surface even when you're down in it. A thing that is hard to grasp or believe in, but she's obviously had practice.

Kooikerhondjelover

Hey, did you notice: next Soup coming up for Friday ( my Saturday). Wish granted. What worried me is Aldens contemplation that ripping the earring from the dead woman’s ear would have been faster and next time he would do that. Not a good development.

ImNotHere

Will Bash-nor be seen as a coward if he flees without explanation on the first threat to him?

J Reynolds

We have no insight into Artonan news media. Even whether they have news media. I suspect that any Artonan who wants to know why Bash left will easily be able to find out.

denatured

I don't think he needs to apologize to her. Although he tapped a domino, he didn't set them up and couldn't see where they'd land. Lind-otta just finished telling Alden not to take responsibility for the whole thing and she's right. Otherwise, by another light, Nancy should apologize to Alden for bringing an unstable person out to a public event. But it's not her fault either.

puppy0cam

> She is unlikely to give in to any requests from the Anesidoran government that the Avowed be punished according to your own laws instead of ours If Anesidora does want to prosecute him under its own law instead of the triplanets, then it would be a political blunder on the triplanets' parts to force the issue. They have very recently challenged Anesidora's sovereignty by taking over in the submerger incident. Forcing this through could end up being the straw that breaks the camel's back as far as the high council is concerned. It's not that Graham is a politically important person (he's not), he's just yet another reminder that the triplanets have little to no care to allow the humans (and likely other resource worlds too) to self-manage their own people. Eventually, Anesidora is going to get tired of being trodden on and retaliate. Of course, if they request extradition through normal diplomatic channels and Anesidora gives him up (they probably would) then this particular straw doesn't quite reach the camel.

Armo

I’m calling it now - Ambassador Joe is approaching!

denatured

Aww but then Lind turned it into something lovely. And Lute brought it up again later as a good thing to have shared. Maybe that'll break the filter a bit more.

WannaBeATree

Is it not? He is internalising that he was over his head. He might even have fiddled with it, back then, merely because it gave him an easy, achievable task to do properly. He might have realised that he focused on it to keep his mind off of the stresfull and dangerous situation, just to reduce stress. Like needing to do something important, but cleaning the house/room instead. That he even went out of his way to do it was not even appropriate in his situation to begin with. That 1min(?) he fiddled with it might have even played a part in him not being able to make it a few blocks to safety in the end. I see his comment as him acknowledging that he should have dialled back his expectations to be closer to his capabilities, no matter what will happen. To pick his fights. I call that a win and character growth. Especially if it makes him survive future - equaly stressing - encounters.

Jeff Wells

There's definitely a level of extreme arrogance. I didn't know that he actually thinks of avowed as beasts of burden, but he definitely thinks he's better than pretty much all of them. Maybe that's a distinction without much of a difference, the effect is basically the same.

Poiuy

This was a really good one but a bit too real. Now I’m thinking about all of the things that are one layer away.

John D Jones

He'd be a much better boss to Zeridee than Bash-nor was. Granted that's a low bar to clear, but still.

denatured

Just remember what Lind-otta said. Good things are a layer away too. Don't forget that in your contemplation.

denatured

Lots of comments comparing this burdering to Hazel's, but the Artonans already have a very public example: Joe. I'm sure there are Artonans that take the perspective that Alden is an extremely effective pawn of the Knights as they make political moves. What a scary position for Alden to be in!

zero1995

Alden did it again, he indirectly got rid of someone he didn't like.

denatured

I think this is the most top-level comments I have ever left on a chapter. But I'm still having thoughts! Isn't it fascinating that Esh and Lind are just standing back, letting Alden light the fuse here? I have a hard time seeing how anyone that fits in Joe's categories would fail to intervene. Even the holy gifts faction wouldn't want humans involving themselves in Artonan politics -- that purpose is far from holy and an inappropriate focus for beings with shiny organs. So is there a fifth category, comrades in arms? One that Joe neglected to mention because he doesn't know anyone that fits, or doesn't recognize their perspective? Or maybe it's not something he wants humans to learn, that they have potential allies?

William Johnson

I am really looking forward to what ever forms pig parry memes take.

Elle

I'm a fully mature adult who has no idea what they are doing. Lol

DAK

Have we had any confirmation that they are related? I always assume they are, but maybe -nor is as common as Jones or Kim.

Neil H

I saved this quote, it spoke right to me: >“Taking responsibility for everything is only a little better than taking responsibility for nothing,” said Lind-otta. “You will be able to act more effectively when you learn to accurately assess your own importance in a situation

DAK

When they meet up, I imagine Esh sadly informing Alis that her chosen human is a ruthless murderer. And then handing her the video of this terrible, terrible incident.

TheLunaticCo

Bacon block! Porcine protection! Boar-er of burdens... That's all ive got so far. If we include the cotten candy aspect, Sucrose Saviour or Candy champion.

Stuart Brown

I disagree with Lute. It was their fault. When you meddle in something, you have responsibility for *all* the outcomes of your meddles, not just the ones you intend.

Kahandran

Definitely need more Gorgon content. I'm madly curious about him and Alden's gremlin

denatured

Hmm... I disagree when the situation is this complicated. You don't control other people's actions. If you're trying to assign the blame a single person, who do you pick? The Grand Senator helped choose this Ambassador. Nancy brought Graham to the market. The thief of the sinker-sender caused the original disaster. Zeridee brought Alden into the situation. The hot dog wizard introduced Alden to the group. Not every person holds equal responsibility for this outcome, unless you want every person to each be fully and equally accountable, which seems pointless. Let's put the blame on the people who acted directly in a clearly inappropriate manner. Bash-nor and Graham. They are responsible.

MWF

He attacked the Artonan ambassador in front of an entire Artonan delegation. Sure the ambassador was being a punchable jerk but that's still a massive diplomatic incident. The Artonans are well within their rights to deal with a criminal who attacks one of their own.

Adamas Shield

There a chance the video will 'pop' in multiple of the best schools of wizards. because I assume the little sister will do her part too. And I will laugh because for once Bash-nor will be right. The MC was being part of a scheme of Stuart's family. He just missed all the rest, like it "just" the son of the strongest person that will take this personally :D :P

Jared

It’s especially great that Alden blocked the punch for Bash-nor because we know Bash-nor is in the faction of “avowed should all be little pets with ryeh-bt powers that don’t have combat use”. So to be “saved” by the super ryeh-bt really pokes a hole into his entire philosophy.

KB

Thank you for the chapter!

Calibri

The sigh of RELIEF I breathed when I saw that Esh-erdi had arrived

MWF

Great chapter but I do have one slight pedantic question: is pastel green the same color as seafoam? Way back in the sauna episode Esh-erdi used his auriad as a scrunchie to hold back his hair and I remember noting the color bc I was not expecting a pastel but green seemed about right. Like maybe it's the color of a fresh shoot in springtime or something. I just looked at the two colors to compare and they are very similar but slightly different and they kinda exist in different places in my brain. Is seafoam supposed to be the color of Lind-ottas auriad or has the pastel green been seafoam all along?

BigD4mnHer0

What's the bet that Esh is sending the video to Alis as all this is happening?

TrustPixiDust

He was able to detect how much authority he was using for heavier burdens day 1 in the lab, no? He just confused the sensation with physical heaviness. His comment to Bash-nor about still being on leave months after his return to Earth on the other hand…

Marcus Green

They intervened as soon as it became necessary and Drusi and Zeridee were there if something had to happen before they arrived. I think Hn'tyons in general, and at least the art'h faction, are a mix of CINOI + GFTHU with the added recognitions that children grow up and that the gift is relatively small.

Curtis

Very possible I'm wrong about this - but is this the first time someone has linked personal identity to the feeling of authority? When Alden says he could mistake Lind for Esh, he must be sensing their shared/entwined authority. But previous to this, I think descriptions of authority had been removed from identity. It was big or kind or something like that. Alden would talk of Stu's authority, but never that the authority inherently felt like Stu's. It's important because it comes back to the partnerless handshake from ages ago - could Lind idenitfy the authority as being Alden's? My gut still says no, but this is moving the needle for me slightly.

J Reynolds

It's been a low-key theme that you are your skill and your skill is you. Bithe said: “In some ways, we are always using our skills.” (Ch. 221). I -think- (not sure if there's any in-text confirmation) that people whose skills match their personality / goals are better off, in that they level faster and are more satisfied.

Insomniac

Would be funny if he becomes a poster-child for "what not do do". Students making up wild conspiracy theories about not messing with human ryeh-b’t's as they are the downfall of arrogant wizards. Just look at Joe and Bash-nor.

Julia

My impression is that they're the same color, and Alden is just bad at identifying colors by name.

Julia

Is Lind significantly older than Esh?

Elle

“Why do you have self-control?” Some random reader grumbled. “It waxes and wanes. I’m sure I’ll have to look and see what everyone is saying about them Friday."

Francis

I knew that the Senator had a ruthless side to her..

Francis

Alden feeling calm after the event is interesting. People who have gone through trauma tend to dissociate when a stressful situation occurs and they become almost like an observer of the situation. Hence the cold, calculating thoughts and Alden just thinking what he should do to worsen things for Bash. Interesting language, btw, when he says "I want him off my planet". My planet. Could be nothing, or could indicate that deep down Alden knows that he is more powerful and influential than he acts out to be

Francis

Wonder what Stu's reaction is going to be...

Terrestrial_Biped

Except Alden had basically no role in what happened to Joe? And the Primary liked Joe prior to Thegund.

Philip

Why is Drusi-otta glaring at Zeridee? Did Zeridee do something unhelpfully self-sacrificing that delayed Drusi-otta’s response?

Aspiring Moth

Completely minor point, but on a reread I made the connection on why the seats on the ferry between F city and apex are slightly too small. it's because the ferries were teleported in from the triplanets as part of the aid efforts. artonans are maybe half a foot shorter than us on average, and proportionally smaller, so even though most equipment/tools/vehicles etc should be cross compatible, humans will find artonan stuff slightly too small, and artonans will find human stuff slightly too big

Robert Mullins

I suspect she's upset by Zeridee inviting a situation that led to Lind and Esh returning early from their vacation.

“I thought I was asking a few friends for help, but everything got crazier than I planned.” “I’m here to add to it,” said the Principal, passing him an accordion folder. “But at least it’s not food. Let’s try and keep the next few holidays on the calendar simpler.” “I will.” I cannot wait to find out about Principal Saleh's reactions to Alden's latest Anesidoran holiday adventure with prominent Artonans. At this rate she may try to pull favors to send Alden back to Chicago over New Year's just to minimize the possible chaos.

[Lind-otta smiled. “Show me something bright in this place,” she said, “and then I’ll leave you to enjoy the day as you were before you decided to help Zeridee-und’h with her battle.”] Lind was doing balls of light when they saved Alden and Zeridee from the unpacific. Does she used a spell that work on the same basis that the flashlight from Alden? It calls the memory of the light that was.

Jazehiah

I'm imagining CNH requiring him to take courses on how to act as a semi-public figure.

Jazehiah

> The pig’s tail was gripped in between two fingers.  If I understood that right, Alden used some of his twirly dexterity practice to line up the block. It's interesting to see how much more natural it is for Alden to protect things. Lute, one of the most powerful people in the area, dove for cover. The "weak little rabbit" was the one to defend the ambassador, who totally didn't need help. This feels important, somehow.

Anthony Lutz

Her skill is the slowing of motion, so it could be that it converts the kinetic energy into light. Alden didn't notice this phenomenon when Esh spilled his red drink, but the tsunami where it was noticed would have had a lot of energy that needed to go somewhere, else it would all go back to destroying things once Lind stopped the skill. Edits (but original left above for reference): Bigdamnhero is likely correct, Esh cast a "familiar giant ball of light" over the ambassadorial residence, i'd forgot he did this. Frantisek, no she does not stop time, esh explicitly said so.. “Does she slow time, or is it something else?” Alden asked quietly. “This is the slowing of motion, not time,” Esh-erdi replied. So in retrospect to these reminders, yea shes not converting kinetic enrgy to light, what is more likely is her authority would be fighting the submerger particles authority in their effort to "submerge into the ocean" again. once she'd worn the particles out of magic, it would just be gravity effecting the water, and she could just gradually release her hold on the water to allow a calm river flow back to the ocean instead of the tsunami like flooding Her request to see something bright is most likely a follow on from her comment at alden moments before; "We enjoyed the rising of a sun that shines on many imperfections, and when we go on other trips to places that are much darker, we will remember that all of this is, as you put it, only one layer away"

PeasOfCrab

Next time… > A kind grandmother who had invited him into her home was trying not to cry. Her mouth strained against itself. Her chin wrinkled. One of my favorite parts of the chapter. Love the small, troubling details still haunting our protagonist.

Lute doesn't have any self-defense training. He's lucky he had the presence of mind to jump back. Quite often, someone will just freeze.

"You are like my Esh when he was younger, I think... Waiting for him to understand this was a very time consuming process, and I am old." I wonder how long it takes until joint breaking becomes the true union of esvulgivnas. So far my mental picture was of an affixation and once the pain is gone for both - immediate access to all the goodies. But of course it makes sense for existential alignment to take longer. What may it involve? Does it go by itself in daily life or does it need active effort and reflection like veawing friendship? Will active effort accelerate it? How do the partners know they have reached esvulgivnas? So much lore yet to learn even on a single crink in this magic universe!

Marcia McGinley

I've just had a reread and I'm wondering why Drusi-otta was glaring at Zeridee. Because Drusi s the one who had interacted with Graham previously and was in a position to recognise him; not Zeridee. I suspect it must have to do with Alden and Lute getting mixed up in the situation and the interest Esh-erdi has taken in Alden and whatever Esh said to her when she didn't tell him Alden was with the Senator - I get the feeling that votary Drusi doesn't like being caught unprepared.

David

The first living creature that Alden preserved with his skill was an invasive pest that the nearest Artonan authority figure promptly disposed of. The first living creature that Alden shielded with his skill (outside of gym/dreams) is an invasive pest that the nearest Artonan authority figure promptly disposed of.

Terrestrial_Biped

I think the esvulgivnas is more or less instant once there are alterations to authority, as you initially suggested. I think they knew each other for a long time before they made the relationship official, at least partially because the younger Esh needed time to catch up to Lind in strength.

Alden really saved his bacon. The Brute shouldn't have gone for the pork chop, or the ham slam, or tried a bit of gammon slammin'. If Alden hadn't preserved that pig, he would've been smoked. I feel sorry for Bash-nor- it's hard to be known as a dork saved by pork. Ambassador? More like Ham-bash-ador, amirite?

Cassie Brooks

Yeah. The “next time” is doing a lot of heavy lifting for Alden’s anxiety

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Lind’s skill + esvulgivnas is really strong combo - basically making her partner the equivalent of a really strong speed brute within her zones, together with whatever other power they have Wonder if Alden does esvulgivnas (with Stu?) what the interactions will be… on the surface it doesn’t immediately seem to have this synergy

Aspiring Moth

I can see Stuart becoming a permanent entruster, regardless of whether Alden has targeted someone else with his skill or not. having a second entruster who is partially mind melded with you (and so always available) would be especially useful, but it isn't specifically related to maker of narrow ways maybe the narrow ways are always entrusted, so they could hold the wormholes open for far longer than the skill would normally be capable of by preserving them I'm reminded of the predictions of Alden, Boe and Jeremy on what let me take your luggage would actually do, and I think it was Alden that wanted a pocket dimension for items. making a narrow way that orbits him and contains his entrusted item outside of normal space could be the way to achieve this goal

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Truly Alden’s real power is to curse any enemy to self destruct Joe: lost his title and clout Hazel: banished off planet Bashnor: lost his position Aulia: motivated her grandson to take concrete action against her Graham: was mad at Alden, now arrested Manon: Dead Random dude at convention: birdered Win-win: lost his room Olget: sentenced to labour for life Robbers: dead or lost limbs Woe be to any who approach the rabbit with Malice in their hearts! "It is time to fight fire with fire using the *big* guns." said Alden, as he published his Odee chicks video.

I just had a major insight. I thought that Snow - VII was the last chapter of the Snow arc. It occurred to me, though: the snowball fight is where it will end. So look forward to Snow - VIII, guys! (Predictions are difficult. Particularly ones about the future. So don't judge too hard if I'm wrong.)

I wonder if Hannah's Bubble of Patient Waiting is a spell biosimilar of the defended hibernation state of Stu's patient ones? It's unlikely to be directly inspired - I get the sense the world Stu's mom picked for her refuge was not well known to Artonans - but it is striking that both Alden and Stu were protected from violence / chaos in their childhood by involuntary confinement to a magic bubble / mindsnare, both had a male protector who was previously a stranger to them cleave or rip in half the threatening person who might normally be a battle partner (Stu's mom) or another minor to protect (the teenage killer), and both Stu and Alden continue to use patient ones / protective preservation as a touchstone concept for their affixation.

I've commented on several occasions that Alden being a knight of the Artonan's Mother planet doesn't make much sense because his Mother planet is Earth, and he is a human. Now he starts thinking in those terms, and I'm glad. Of course this has a few delightful corollaries. The Earth Contract, unlike Mother, does not primarily serve it's planet's people. It was not even equipped for a human wizard, and thinking of managing a human Knight might make it chant "Melt, melt...". Even more interestingly, the narrative quietly leads towards Stu and Alden having an esvulgivnas. So if one of them is Knight of Artona's Mother planet and the other is a Knight of Earth's Mother planet, doesn't this bring so many delicious possibilities for mayhem and improvisation, along with unprecedented closeness of the two species? It is really fitting that Stu will be the Maker of narrow ways so he can keep the path to Earth always open 😉

One of the things I love about this story, is the good mix of responsible and irresponsible adults. Most stories with a not fully adult protagonist, struggle with giving kids any kind of agency without making it so that there are no adults that they can rely on. I really appreciate how seamlessly Alden fits into this world. Where he is dealing with issues that really shouldn’t be a teenagers problem, but as soon as he was like, alright, I’m actually in over my head, there were people that he could call, who were willing to drop everything and take over.

Shweta Narayan

I'm kinda hoping Alden creates a situation where Earth Contract has to change 😆

Given Alden had been holding the pig tucked under one arm, and post-block he found he was holding it by its tail with his right arm fully extended, I've been imagining he effectively 'drew' the pig from under his left arm using his right fingers and did a magnificent whip across (forward-across?) with a final wrist flick to get it perfectly lined up to take the punch in time. Like a comic underarm battōjutsu draw using a brilliantly pink pig instead of the more usual katana. I really hope someone takes a stab (heh) at trying to illustrate this scene, the image in my head is magnificent.

“I got teleported to Punta de la Luna,” said Alden. “A flyer was there waiting for me, but there was some trouble when I tried to board it.” Possibly that made it sound like a mechanical problem, but it was the best he could do. “I had to evacuate on foot with an Artonan. She got hurt, and I was carrying her. So I was slow. And the ocean caught up to us.” Haoyu’s eyes widened. Lexi’s narrowed. “Punta de la Luna is gone,” said Haoyu. “Yep.” “It’s very gone. There’s basically nothing left.” “I made it out of there before it was wiped. We were almost to safety when this enormous water mountain stopped us. Hn’tyon Esh-erdi and Hn’tyon Lind-otta arrived to deal with it. He pulled me out of the water.” “You were in the water?” said Haoyu. Alden rubbed his cheek. The freshly healed skin was a little sensitive. “I was about to drown.” Lexi’s eyes were slits now.

Yeah, the pig must be honored. I have this mental picture of it replacing the panp'i lamp in the arth's documents library. So Stu may read under a human-made lamp, and one with history at that. Edit: Also, per your order, a picture of the happening, as Gemini imagines it. It is far from perfection - I couldn't persuade the AI to picture Trash-nor less handsome, or to move the pig between him and the fist. Still, I kinda like it. You know, I would really not be surprised if someone from the Anesidora High Council (the Rabbit counselor, perhaps?) reached out to Alden and Lute to recruit them to be Servin-ith's tour guides again tomorrow, or another day soon before she's done with the Anesidoran portion of her tour. Perhaps take her and her wizarding entourage on a more official tour of CNH with some bonus school-aged relatives of the high council like his friend with the cudgel?

JJ Hunter

What the chances the High Council and/or Colibri would try to align having Grand Senator Servin-ith + clearly popular with Artonans Alden Ryeh-b't visit the CNH gym when the maintenance wizards are there doing the spell renewals? Give the kids a treat for their successful high-stakes diplomacy with that unfortunate bout of violence the other day, try to steer a Grand Senator in a good mood towards leaning on the wizards to give the school some impromptu extra gifts in the name of education. Commended kid + school-aged youth + young Ryeh-b't + fluent Artonan-speaker + has successfully taken a high-status Artonan on a CNH tour before = surely nothing can go wrong with this paradigm!

Chapter 60 (Mother, pt 2): > “The tension between your free authority and your bound strengthens your power. The more equal they are to each other, the greater the benefit. This is why earth tries so hard to cajole people into taking affixations as often as possible. It's a problem of exponentials. Everything is all under control until it isn't. And this is considered the safe "operating temperature" for avowed. Maybe the ranks are about a safe baseline to try and take the amount of unbound authority to in a given affixation. And the rank up process is the system deciding your "power output" is insufficient for the amount of fuel in the tank, so it changes you to the next baseline quantity of authority. Which is why the time people gets selected can be so random. They get selected as soon as they meet any given baseline amount of authority (along withmeeting whatever other requirements exist) and the 90 days is a window in which the average human leaves the baseline. Or maybe this is just late night babbling after watching a video about Chernobyl... https://youtube.com/watch?v=WMr3-ShzB08&lc=UgwCsY9hPZbJRRDPcdx4AaABAg

If I were the incoming / returning Artonan Ambassador inheriting the diplomatic mess Bash-nor just left behind, I would give Zeridee the Maricel treatment.

JJ Hunter

Throw Bash-nor further under the bus - Bash-nor *did* leave Punta de la Luna at the first possible opportunity and left a single assistant behind to deal with all the obligations he didn't care about. Foreground the heroism of that ambassador assistant, a holdover from a previous ambassador's appointment, who stayed to help with local evacuations at increasing risk to her own safety because she cared about all her human neighbors *that much*, and ended up tragically attacked by thieving human Avowed trying to protect a human child's escape flyer (and then that child himself!) for her trouble. Look, here's Zeridee-und'h just the other day back at work while still recovering from major head trauma because she's that dedicated to serving humanity to the best of her abilities! Someone behaving like is worth being called a hero, both of our peoples can agree on that.

Anthony Lutz

none of this disagrees with what you just said, but I think its like: unmanaged free authority is a chaos risk, so turn ordinary people into avowed. once an avowed is at 1:1 bound to free, they are about to have loss of skill assignment and become an abomination, so affixing early at low percentages to avoid this is best. Alden got his notice at 13%. Aldens 9 + 13% = level ~10 lines up for this idea. affixing early, and affixing low avoids the risk of Thegund-like experiences when away from a system while on assignments for extended periods. Ranks are "quantity of authority", yet the avowed average leveling time (at least for all of these school age avowed) is 2-4 levels a year, regardless of rank, which makes leans towards levels being % of total with some funky "human management" involved with timing. with the fact of "Even when he’s leveled a few times, he won’t get another S-rank skill, Some lower ranked ones instead." yet with Mother, Alden (at B4+4free) was offered a second B skill instead of his chosen path. until your old and/or have lots of levels will your "early affix percentage" be high enough to start another skill of the same rank. the age of selection speed at which a person passively gain free authority since birth. if your 14 and have S-rank quantity, boom early affix, 18 with a small amount, your an F. 20+ year olds dont have enough free authority generation to be of consern to point 1: chaos risk is low. i'm sure theirs some minimum age/maturity thing going on because lute was a double S instead of a 12 year old affix or something. hyperbolies/rank-upers are either someone with a high level with enough free that 1 srank affix isnt enough so they get a new "big skill" to compensate, and/or they are accidentally partially becoming wizardlike and forcibly growing their free authority too fast. I believe Alden will rank up to A and beyond because of second method. the hn'tyon path is a super speed boost for wizards because of they tension between the free and the bound. the exponential potential of the tension probably ramps up quite high after a few affixes

Cassie Brooks

I wonder if the Avowed who were associated with Bash-nor at the festival are in any kind of trouble with Seriv-ith? I doubt it, because cuddly lambs are too innocent to be responsible. But, like. They are in trouble with Alden. Through their own actions and Bash-nor’s as well. It would be unreasonable for them to be in trouble at all, but I don’t know who the new ambassador is gonna be like?

“It doesn’t,” Stuart said more firmly. He looked back at Alden. “Not right now. It’s not a simple contract, where rules are set and I must follow them without <>. My interpretation of the most correct action can change. But if Evul were to fall on top of the table right now, <> injured and only moments from death—-” “That’s a very specific and dark example.” “—and if you refused to use your skill on her, but I had the authority to force you to do so, I would. For the good of the Triplanets. Even if you hated me for it and were no longer my friend.” — Thinking about it, these sentences can be interpreted in a few ways. Sways exist, and Joe’s contract lessons implied that there can be conflicts between contracters that weren’t there initially in which case the person with stronger authority wins. The warriors contract = sway like effect on avowed who refuse to follow instructions, as long as an authorized high authority artonan is nearby to enforce it? Would fit with how Joe was so sure that Alden could be made to endure endless misery (of the kind where he works in a chaos zone) and how artonans can make use of even planets that are anti-artonan

Alden, who was preserving his jar so that his water bugs didn’t get sloshed around, looked over at him. “It’s absolutely been shitty,” he agreed. “But there have been good things, too.” SLEYCAAAAAAAAAAA HOW DID HE PRESERVE THOSE LIVING THINGS AND CAN HE EAT THEM, he asked calmly.

Joey T.

PREDICTIONS: Xmas Present Edition Since we've already seen a lot of Alden's Xmas-present shopping, what presents do we predict Alden will receive from everyone else? -From his Aunt: Delivery of Victor, Womby, & Jeremy/Boe's presents. She has that visitor slot soon. -From Lute: A soundproofing array, w/ a note: "Lexi will self-immolate if he ever hears what you've been practicing in your room." -From The Informant: An unbound wand engraved w/ the Artonan logograms for "Know Thyself." -From Natalie: That chocolate pretzel from the Shoes chapter. It's not even stale yet, I bet.

Stuart Brown

I think Stu'art'h's present will be something living, like a klerm colony. Or those rock creatures they like. It fits well with a thoughtful, long-lasting gift that has personal meaning to Stu (and Alden) after he showed him the quiet ones his mother 'gifted' the river.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people that Bash-nor was hanging out with weren't okay with him being suddenly recalled. Imagine you're employed at a place where you have a good salary, but an overbearing, condescending boss. The boss goes, your salary remains. "Ding-dong, the witch is dead!" sing many.

Guus van der Borg

I've reread this chapter multiple times already, but only now did I realize how Lind-otta turned Alden's words around on him. "and when we go on other trips to places that are much darker, we will remember that all of this is, as you put it, only one layer away." I like it. Yeah, the shit is always just one layer away from normal life. But that also works the other way around. If you're going through shit, remember that normal life is only one layer away from you, and you can (almost always) get there again.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

I wonder what Evul will make of the happenings. Will she be confirmed in her belief of the bloodthirsty rabbit? Will she approve? I was just re-reading the chapter where she formally meets Alden and tells him he may call her Beast in the flock. A funny skill name, and the skill being her, she comes across as both mischievous and strong, like a kitsune.

JJ Hunter

Is the Rapports I tree that dropped a living leaf on Alden's head the first tree to shade his face after his emergency affixation surgery (first affixation after he gained his authority sense)? Stu has mentioned Sina's knight tree as being significant more than once before. Maybe the first tree to shade your face after your rebirth as a knight (after your trial of self-forging is complete) is significant much the same as the first tree to shade your infant face is significant. Maybe that living leaf Alden has been using as a bookmark will help save his life someday.

ShadyAsEck

Stu also referred to Sina's affixation there as her "first death and second birth" so it certainly has ceremonial significance, of not magical.

Casey

Just some parts of the running on the moon that clearly demonstrated a struggle of will to me. "Maybe there were three hundred miles left to go. Maybe there were twice that many." "One foot in front of the other. For as long as he could naturally." "Hey. Gorgon’s confused ancestors. Talk to me. Keep me company at least." "He walked a bit farther, trying to put himself in the right headspace to do and say the right things. What were the right things again?" "He wanted to lay down. He wanted to sleep right here in the chaos. It couldn’t be that bad could it?" "He took a step and then another. It wasn’t enough to satisfy his fresh sense of dread. He needed to jog. So he did." "Now, it seemed like even that was at risk of cracking apart." "Yeah. This is worse than bad, he thought tiredly, kicking up soil and sand as he trudged forward. Gotta keep the willpower and the focus up somehow." "Admittedly, he was also hyped up on alien drugs and talking about himself in the third person. But it was still an impressive achievement." It is my opinion that the good protagonist in a story has stronger depths of reserves typically because they fight for something other than theirselves. Ergo, they can keep going pass sensible selfimposed limits. It's for Kibby in this arc. Alden knows it with certainy, that he has to do this for her. Do you think he would have managed to run as far without Kibby?

I am curious of the comments in trime and at school after these events. The pig shield will be a meme, allright. But I imagine quite a few believing Alden was being nice to the wizards in the „nonagon waxing“ way rather than brilliantly getting Bash-nor thrown off earth. Not that those comments matter much. But he cannot clarify either.

This reminds me why I should do another reread. Alden is such a good protagonist and his motivations feel superhuman in an earned way, because he cares so genuinely. I don't remember the exact wording, but when he was doing the accounting of lived saved to Boe, he internally thought how saving Kibby doesn't count because she saved him as much as he saved her. Without Kibby, Alden would not have made it to the final run to begin with. With Kibby, he made it to the run and also had the will to push himself to his superhuman limits and bring them home.

Wheels42

I love how you've written Alden, especially his struggle with self worth. It hits a little too close to home but I don't mind a little cry at certain passages to laugh heavily at the next.

Good stuff! I was thinking how wise these characters are, especially Lind-otta and Esh-erdi. Must be hard to write these things as an author but I must say you're doing a fantastic job!
