Writing Update:

I'm quite pleased with this one. I'm aiming to have the next chapter to you on Wednesday. I won't be doing a Sunday update post separately since these top of chapter updates are kind of serving as my info zone. And I'll have that Wednesday opportunity for a check-in, too.

Chapter Title: Snow VIII

“Zeridee-und’h!” said Stuart. “I wanted to ask you something about her, too. Not about her. Pardon my <<inaccuracy caused by enthusiasm>>. But about how you protected her with your skill when you rescued her. Without touching her.”

Huh?

It was 8:15 in the evening for Alden, and around the crack of dawn in Rapport I. Stuart claimed to have slept “enough” since they’d spoken hours ago. He was in the manuscript library with multiple stacks of books on the table in front of him and two tablets other than Evul’s. When their call had connected, he’d been putting stone orbs into a floating box that had drifted out of view a moment later.

“You haven’t done anything like that since then?” Stuart asked. The panpi’i lamp sat glowing beside one of his book stacks. “You’d have told me, wouldn’t you? Because it would be exciting if you had. But it could have happened again very recently, and you haven’t had time to mention it, so I should ask.”

They’d been talking for over twenty minutes. Alden had tidied his room while they did. It had been an unusual call, but Stuart had said he wanted to hear about Wednesday’s gym class. So Alden had been prepared to touch on the highlights and show him some footage, and he hadn’t been surprised when Stuart asked detailed questions about what exactly had happened and why and how Alden felt about it.

But now that they’d covered everything interesting about MPE, Alden had brought up the incident at the Christmas market today. Only for Stuart to jump straight to a question like this.

“You heard me say that Lute and I spent time with Grand Senator Servin-ith and Ambassador Bash-nor because of Zeridee, didn’t you? And that something happened?”

Stuart hastily set down the stylus he’d been holding. “I should have asked what happened.”

“I assumed you would, but you don’t have to be curious about it.” Alden nudged a shoe deeper into his closet with one foot so that he could slide the door shut. “And, no, I haven’t used my skill like that again. What was it you wanted to know about that?”

Now he was going back over what had been said tonight in his head, as well as all the things Stuart had seemed interested in during their last couple of talks. I thought he was just getting really into MPE stories. But…

“When you told me about saving Zeridee-und’h, you mentioned your mindset,” said Stuart, “but I didn’t question you much about it because it had just happened and you were still wounded in heart and body. I wondered if you would tell me more about it now. Your power <<manifested>> differently than usual during that life trial, so I’m sure you’ve thought about it and will think about it in the future. I’d like to know what your thoughts are in detail since I wasn’t able to see it myself.”

He picked up the stylus again like he was ready to take notes, then seemed to realize what he’d done and set it back down. “But if something happened with a Grand Senator today, that is an event I’m curious to hear about too. Of course. You said it was Servin-ith? I don’t know much about her except that her votes are rarely in line with my family’s beliefs. She has poor vision when it comes to chaos.”

“What does that mean?”

“She opposes efforts that don’t directly protect our planets and our resource worlds. Some people believe that there’s no need to work on the chaos situation except when and where it’s an immediate threat to our realm. They are wrong. According to every knight I’ve ever spoken to, and even people like Ro-den, repairing as much of reality as we possibly can is necessary if we don’t want to be entirely overwhelmed at some point in the future. Actually, Ro-den claims that all we’ve ever known is ultimately doomed to be overwhelmed no matter what we do, but his actions don’t make sense to me if that’s really what he thinks. People like Grand Senator Servin-ith are more concerned with the comfort of the present generation than the survival of future ones.”

Alden would add that to the mental picture he had of Servin-ith. When I woke up this morning, I never guessed I’d have such well-rounded knowledge of an Artonan politician by nighttime.

At present, though, the Grand Senator’s shortsightedness when it came to chaos was less concerning than the direction of Stuart’s interest. Hadn’t there been an unusual number of questions lately not only about how Alden’s classmates’ skills worked but also about what Alden liked about those skills?

“What are you researching in the manuscript library?” he asked. “Are you doing homework for LeafSong in there?”

“No, it was rude of me to focus on my own questions when you tried to tell me about your day,” Stuart apologized. “You speak first.”

“But…” Alden frowned. “Okay. We can’t talk about three things at once. I’ll tell you, and then you tell me what you’re up to, and then I’ll try to answer your questions about the thing with Zeridee.”

“Yes.”

“All right. Lute and I were shopping for Christmas presents earlier. Tell me if there’s anything from Earth you’d like, by the way, because buying friends gifts is a Christmas tradition.”

“Grapes!” Stuart said immediately.

Alden hadn’t expected him to have a request. “Grapes?”

“Are grapes difficult to acquire?”

“No. They’re easy to acquire. I’ll bring you some for sure. Lute and I were shopping for presents at a market in one of the parks in F-city when Zeridee approached us and suggested I talk to the Grand Senator. Ambassador Bash-nor was with her, and…”

Stuart listened to the story of Alden’s afternoon without interrupting after that, though he looked perplexed more than once.

“Anyway, Lute and I expected Lexi to have something to say about it when we made it back home,” Alden said, “but he hasn’t heard yet. I’m sure as soon as he does, he’ll complain about us being involved in something so weird. And I’ve been expecting Boe to call and be at least a little upset.”

“Boe is your friend who has known you longest,” Stuart said after a moment. “Why will he be upset?”

“He’ll probably say it was stupid of me to get between an enraged Brute and Bash-nor.”

“It would have been if you threw your body between them, but you used your skill. And there were many other people around. Although you probably should have worried more about your safety since some Avowed are much stronger than you, I do not think you were stupid under such urgent circumstances.”

“I’ll tell him you said so.”

“I would like to talk to him sometime. Since he is your friend, I would like to know him, too.”

“He’s been under a lot of pressure,” Alden replied. “Ever since I went missing and came back. I’d like to introduce you to him, though. When he’s in a better mood.”

Stuart nodded. “I understand why you tried to protect the former ambassador even though he is a bad person. But I don’t understand why you bowed and apologized to him for it.”

“I told you. I wanted to interrupt him, and I wanted to keep him from saying anything else to Servin-ith. I don’t know exactly what I thought he might do…say something cruel to Mrs. Nancy or the man who lost his promised spouse. Or he might have convinced Servin-ith to think about it all in the wrong way. It just didn’t seem like Bash-nor should be allowed to talk anymore.”

“Why didn’t you tell him to be silent and feel the weight of his shame? Why did you bow and offer a fake apology?”

Alden sat in his desk chair. “Because he’s a wizard. And an ambassador. Because a Grand Senator and other wizards who I don’t know very well were watching, and they were all tense.”

“But that’s no reason—”

“You know what I mean. You just don’t like it.”

Stuart tucked his chin and pressed his lips together.

“I was trying to find a way to speak in front of people who might not approve of an Avowed shouting that a wizard should feel shame,” said Alden. “That’s all.”

Stuart made a displeased noise. “I’ll contemplate it.”

“That’s the first time you’ve ever said you’ll contemplate something and somehow made it sound like a threat.”

“The only threat is that I will disagree with you even more after contemplating and gift you with a stronger argument.”

“I look forward to it. Moving on…what are you researching? I thought you were enjoying hearing about MPE like usual, but your questions have gotten more specific lately. What’s that about?”

Alden wanted to fidget. He tried not to.

What are you up to, Stuart?

He thought he’d guessed, but it would be a great time to be wrong. Because if he was right and Stuart had been researching skills for days, analyzing footage of human Avowed, and losing sleep…

Stuart scooted forward in his seat, his eyes gleaming and the corners of his mouth lifting. “I’m collecting information about skills for you, Alden. So that you’ll never have to bind anything you don’t like or understand again. I’m making a list of the types of abilities you might want to consider, and I’m also thinking about what will complement your nature, your interests, and your current skill. Some of what I’ve collected is general information and skill theory for you to learn. I don’t want to add complexity to your choosing season before you’re ready, so I’ll wait for you to ask me for it. But this will be available for you when you need it in the future.”

But you don’t know exactly what my skill is. You don’t know what my circumstances are.

“There will be more options for you than whatever your Contract shows you when the time comes. I’ll help with that.”

Don’t try to give me even more when I can only give you grapes.

“Stuart, you don’t have to work on this for me. I’m fine,” said Alden. “This sounds like a lot of trouble for you.”

“I’m enjoying it! You use your skill brilliantly, and finding what may help you use it even better is something I’m proud to do. You deserve magic that makes you happy and fits you with nearest-perfection. These are full of skills that might be useful to you if you decide to keep helping in houses of healing.” Stuart laid his hand on top of the stack beside the panpi’i lamp, then stood to reach for another stack. “And there are a few offensive spells in these that could be easily turned into impressions even if Earth doesn’t already have similar options. It probably does. The drawer full of memories over there contains all sorts of things. And I don’t know if you can make out that table in the shadows back there, but it’s completely covered with materials Jozz used when he was approaching his final decision for Whisperer of Refuge. He protects an area, and only those who he’s told about the refuge may enter. There’s more than one similarity with your skill. Following his path of study has been very helpful to us!”

Damn. He’s already researched so much.

“You can’t just give me offensive spells and healing skills. I’m a Ryeh-b’t.”

“It’s true that some choices might be much harder to obtain than others, but I can make it possible,” Stuart said firmly.

“You can’t make everything possible. And my next binding isn’t important enough for you to be spending all this time thinking about it. Your own life is incredibly busy, and you should—”

“It’s not important?” Stuart was staring at him, and it wasn’t one of his usual, scrutinizing stares. He looked shocked. He bumped a book stack with an elbow and barely caught the one on top before it could fall. He didn’t stop staring.

I said that what I affix isn’t important. Out loud. “I meant…”

“My friend…will you really say such a thing about such a thing to such a one as me?”

It was suddenly like they were nose to nose, and Stuart’s fist had a grip on Alden’s lungs instead of a book.

“I just don’t want any of the doors that are left to close yet,” Alden said quietly. “I cut away so much of my life in two or three instants this year, and I wasn’t terrified to do it, but I should have been.”

“I don’t think I understand what you’re saying.”

“I know.” Alden shoved his hands under his desk so that he could clench his fists and release them a couple of times without Stuart seeing. “I’m sorry I said it wasn’t important. I didn’t mean that at all. I spoke thoughtlessly because…I was uncomfortable. For a couple of reasons. One of them is that you do extraordinary things for me, and I feel like getting you grapes isn’t equally extraordinary.”

Stuart set the book back on its stack and took his seat again. “If our positions were swapped, would you not be here in our manuscript library trying to help me?”

“I would. Of course.”

“Then what’s so extraordinary about it?”

There was a minute or so of quiet in which they looked at each other. Halfway through it Alden rolled his eyes and Stuart wrinkled his nose, and that became a signal for the atmosphere to return to normal.

“I am familiar with the feeling,” said Stuart, “of someone giving you a gift you can’t match.”

“Who’s out there giving presents so expensive that the Primary’s family can’t compete?” Alden asked lightly.

“Some human.” Stuart looked away from him, toward the glowing bird. “Do you remember how kindly you spoke to me and how carefully you carried me while they were preparing the room so that my leg could be restored? I couldn’t hear you or see you, but you were recorded that day. Father obtained the video for me. When you told them you were too tired to hold me for long, they gave you drugs to make you keep going. More drugs than were good for you. So that I could have the perfect protection of your skill until the last moment instead of other options that would have been fine.

“You were still wet from the pool. You didn’t even have on shoes. And you looked younger than you do now. We treated you badly and scared you. But the whole time you walked back and forth in that room, holding me, you were talking to me. You called me stupid a couple of times and asked a few questions about school. Mostly, you spoke words of comfort. You told me you hoped I would be all right. I have studied that video. It is impossible to study that video and not see that you were giving me the gift of your compassion.”

He looked back at Alden. “I thank you for it. But it was cruel of you to get lost right after that.”

Alden couldn’t remember exactly what he had said to Stuart’s unconscious body while he paced around with it before the healers were ready.

“Hard to tell a dead man you noticed his efforts?” he asked.

“Remarkably.”

“Sorry. That was shitty of me. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

Stuart gestured at the table in front of him. “I’m going to keep doing this. Because it’s obvious and right that I should. And because it makes me happy to do it. And because you will appreciate it when you’re not being shitty.”

“I appreciate it now, Stuart. I really, really do.”

“It’s not a project that should be delayed. You should have this information before your next binding. And it needs to be thorough so that even when I’m not here you have everything you might want.”

Even if what? “Why wouldn’t you be here?” Alden barely kept the alarm out of his voice.

“I’ll be a knight,” said Stuart. “I’ll travel to places where communication is less simple. Even when I’m somewhere like Goldbush we won’t be talking to each other as easily as we do now.”

“Goldbush…”

“The world where most young knights are training now. Did you forget the name?”

“No. I remembered. I was realizing…trying to picture your work there,” Alden said slowly. “Is it a place like Moon Thegund?”

“Not in many ways,” said Stuart. “Except for the chaos, of course. Now, it’s my turn to ask you about Zeridee-und’h again, isn’t it? I think I have a fair understanding of the concepts that are essential to your skill, but I was wondering if there might be something I haven’t thought of in the way you used it when you saved her. You were separated from her, underwater, in a state of extreme stress. And you kept her shielded. Did you notice anything about how you thought or felt in that moment that might be important?”

Alden wanted to give him an answer. However, now that he was aware Stuart was actively going after information about the essence of his skill, the contract tattoo was problematic.

I’ll have to say I can’t say, he thought.

But then he realized phrasing it like that might make Stuart suspicious, and the tattoo wouldn’t allow him to deliberately make Stuart suspicious. He searched around for any answer he could give that wasn’t a lie.

It was like being trapped in a tiny, dark room, banging into walls.

“Are you well? Your face is odd.”

Alden tried to make his face be less odd. Having an odd face might also make Stuart suspicious.

“That was a bad night,” he said. The words dragged themselves out from between his lips. At least they weren’t a lie.

“It’s fine if there wasn’t anything obviously significant,” said Stuart. “Maybe you remember something that seems insignificant but unusual?”

He looked so expectant.

“I’ll…I’ll think about it.”

“Oh.” Stuart drooped a little, but picked himself right back up. “Well, that might be best anyway. Record every detail you can, and we’ll go over them together the next time you visit.”

“I do look forward to visiting again,” Alden said. A pitiful attempt to make up for how disappointing he was being in other ways.

“You can come see the manuscript library and help me research if you want. That would be a nice way to spend a day, wouldn’t it?”

******

When he got off the call several minutes later, Alden had exactly enough composure left to climb up into his loft bed and punch his mattress a few times instead of hitting something that would break his hand or be broken by it. Then he smashed his face into one pillow, covered the back of his head with another, and tried cursing furiously.

It didn’t exactly work, but he could only bully a mattress and shout muffled insults at a pillow for a short while before continuing became too dumb and embarrassing. He rolled over onto his back.

This well of emotion needed something to vent at. He was so happy and touched to have a friend like Stuart. And he was so ashamed and angry at himself. And afraid of himself.

He wanted to peel off his tattoo and throw it out the window.

I wish Ro-den would appear right now.

Alden would bow to him. Then, when his head was conveniently aligned in that position, he could charge at the professor like a bull.

Yeah, that’s the thing for my temper. Bet nobody’s ever done a bow like that one.

Alden answered like lightning.

Boe was glaring. “You—”

“No,” said Alden, glaring back. “I’m having a bad moment, and I don’t want to hear it right now.”

Why did you jump in front of some crazy man who could take your head off? And you did it for that ambassador whose money we blew!? What were you doing?”

“MY BEST! I was doing my best. That’s what it looks like today. And I said not right now.

“Fine. Whatever. We’ll talk later.”

“Stuart wants to say hello to you. He is such a fucking good person, Boe. He’s awesome. And I’m starting to get really pissed that you don’t like me being friends with him.”

Boe stared at him. “How mad are you?”

“I only punched the mattress. It’s just a mattress. It can’t feel anything. I’ll be over it in ten minutes. I miss you.”

“Yeah. You too. Talk to you…tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow’s good.”

“Eat some carbs or something, Alden. Go to that spa and inhale peace potions. What’s up with you?”

“For your information, I’m having a very good week. I feel a lot more like myself. Teachers do important work. Klein and I are pals now. The hospital staff loves me, and they’re all willing to mentor and support me. I can go to the Christmas market one day and have a ton of friends and a giant family waiting for me there. And it would be a great trip with no mishaps.”

“…okay.”

“I warned you the second I answered the call,” Alden said.

“You did.”

Alden nodded. “I bought you a Christmas present. Connie’ll take it to you for me. Sorry it’ll be a few days late.”

soup! thanks you Sleyca

and soup of the future! (should be VIII instead of XIII?)

Jean

I love a good building friction. Taking bets on what gives first, the triangle of absolute secrecy or Stuart's trust.

Kooikerhondjelover

Note: the title is a bit far ahead (XIII instead of VIII).

Cole

Oh poor Alden

Sky23

OMG they're so in love!!! Just my interpretation, and one I personally find a lot of joy in. It's not one without logic, however. Stuart apparently watching the recording of Alden saving him… At least once to have the thoughts he has about it. That's pretty cute. And Alden literally crashing out because Stuart is just too perfect.

Topher

Thanks for the chapter!

JJ Hunter

*dances for joy: new chapter!*

It really made me cry to see how Stuart cared that Alden spoke to him when he was frozen. I understand how that can make a lonely boy like Stuart feel quite A Lot. Especially after trying and failing to become friends with other kids, now he sees someone who thinks he is an idiot and still asks questions, tries to connect and to comfort him. That is very special, even if for Alden it is less so.

Aspiring Moth

Maybe snow is a reference to the ceremony where knights take their rests. That's where the choosing season of candidates truly starts, and Alden is exploring his possible futures right now

Dervish

Now Alden's fear and that tattoo of secrecy are fighting with his care for an exceptional friend. Does he know anybody who can help him out of this dilemma? Meanwhile, Stuart gets a lesson in human social programming on top of Alden acting strangely. That makes for one hell of a confused day for both of them. I'm hoping we'll see Alden realize how mixed up his signals will seem to Stuart, and at least they'll be able to correct some of that. I'm *sure* that if that happens, Stuart will contemplate how hard it must have been for Alden to understand all he's been doing. Especially when one of the first consequences of his affixing will possibly be Stuart getting sent to Goldbush? How long are those tours of duty?

Thanks

Another punch in the guts... If having signed such a strangling contract keeps being so difficult, Alden may eventually ask Joe for permission to talk to Stu and Boe about his skill. And should Joe refuse, there's always the option for Esh to remove his tattoo. But maybe Joe's revenge / shake-up for the Primary can be enacted if Stu learns about the skill? Or Stu will notice Alden being so evasive eventually, and take things in his own hands.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

I love Alden and Boe's friendship. Who else in Alden's life does he not have to pretend to be a happy child for? Even with Stuart, Alden is careful and always spinning things towards social ease. I wonder how Joe would react to knowing his tattoo restriction is causing the Primary's favorite son to waste late night hours, day after day, doing useless research based on misinformation?

Kate Yen

Wow wow wow this one has me REALLY wound up and wanting more. Excellent Aldening in this one. Aughhhh

Dervish

I was so excited to see the new chapter that I forgot to say thank you. I've been looking forward to it for almost a week, and you have reason to be happy with it. It really shifts those two characters' relationship. Forward, I hope! Thank you so much for writing it!

Terrestrial_Biped

I looked back, and Alden carried Stu in chapter 35. Only one thing he said to preserved Stu made it into the text: |||“I think Joe is about to give all of your friends a tattoo and make them pay up somehow in exchange for keeping quiet about this,” Alden told Stuart’s petrified body. “It must be crazy important for you people to get into wizard school, huh?”|||

I'll share a part of mine as it is morning for me Enjoy your soup and be rested for tomorrow

I’m a bit confused. Can’t Alden just tell Stuart his skill is called Bearer of all burdens - he didn’t learn that from Ro-den, so it’s not covered by the contract. And Stuart can just look it up? Or, as an Artonan Wizard, Stuart can just get the (human) name from Alden’s profile? Anything that Ro-den can work out, Stuart can work out too (with help).

Zenty

Stu and Alden chapters are always the best; they never fail to melt my heart.

abowden

I wonder if this will motivate him to see what he can do without the Tatoo stopping him. We know it was never meant to get in the way of the big C, and cannot, in fact interfere with it anyway. He should be able to say "I've changed my mind about you summoning me" and show him the real profile, if he can make himself really mean it.

11037

I've been thinking something a bit more ominous as this chapter naming continues. Too much snow leads to an avalanche. But that's probably overthinking it too. It's likely just a reference to it being Chistmas season in the story.

abowden

This is the first time the tattoo has really, seriously got between him and a friend in a nasty way. I hope Alden doesn't just let this go, he has options.

TheLunaticCo

Alden should be really just skip jo and go straight to esh. Like now, this night. This geass is a burden not worth bearing.

WannaBeATree

Thanks! Nice chapter. The tattoos ended up being scarier than I thought, but also easier to trick, if you suspect it's existance. Especially since it is not even drawn in invisible ink and everyone knows about it. I am reminded of a fantasy fanfiction story (HPMoR), where similar tattoos are used by terrorists. Those also had the added effect that their restrictive nature could be partially ignored by the wielder, as soon as they suspect that their interrogator uses the restrictions against them to try figuring out what information is restricted or identify them as terrorists. That clause is very good, if the terrorist actually wants to keep the information hidden. Though if an under cover agent is tattoed, it allows for easier info gathering by interrogators. They simply have to purposefully trigger the restriction-lightening and the under cover agent can spill the discovered secrets. In the case of Alden, if someone gets curious about his tattoo, they could just ask him questions like: - "Is the info it prevents you from speaking related to a location?" - "Is the info it prevents you from speaking related to skills?" - and so on... While strapped to a heart rate monitor and zone in on those that get a strong reaction. Since the restriction is always active and restricts only specific things, he'll give it away through the fact of trying to find the least suspicious solution.

puppy0cam

Alden is specifically prevented from behaving in a way he thinks could lead to someone else learning about his skill. By calling it Bearer of All Burdens, chances are that the contract will translate that to something that too closely resembles the true artonan name of the skill. Theoretically I think it may also be preventing Alden from calling it Let Me Take Your Luggage to artonans. Because Let Me Take Your Luggage is, in theory, the official translation from artonan to english. An intentionally misleading one, but still a translation.

Awesomepossum15

Are the volunteer wizards still at Matadero? Or did Ro-den specifically leave already? Obviously Ro-den would say that of all the people he shouldn't let in on his skill, an Art'h is one of the shouldn't-est. But we're at the point where I feel like Alden should be hounding him.

WannaBeATree

Except if Alden knows that they are doing it, the tattoo could make him stay quiet and freak out over every question.... Worse still, since this technique only works if the tattoo does not have Alden freak out over every question, interrogators could stop and randomly try to ask veiled questions again, days or weeks later, hoping that Alden does not realise that he is being interrogated. It could work, but if Alden *does* realise, then the tattoo could literally make him mad! Since Alden would know that interrogators could be anywhere and every question could be analysed to figure out the secret, the tattoo could just make him stop speaking entirely forever or have him freak out 24/7. It could explain why we've not heard of anyone going around the restrictions. Because people have tried in the past and now those tattooed are in permanent psychiatric wards ... scary, scary.

JJ Hunter

Oh my heart. I keep thinking of Alden surreptitiously looking at Stu's study journals in the wizard's library at the Rapports school, and here Stu is *inviting Alden to come research with him in his family's manuscript library* right after Alden realizes he's stuck in a metaphorical corner about what more he can say that might give Stu clues when his contract with Ro-den is in play. "Some of what I’ve collected is general information and skill theory for you to learn." Stu is offering Alden the materials of a prospective *knight's* education where Alden had been scrounging for bare crumbs of a wizard's education. Oh my heart.

WannaBeATree

If he means it, then yes, I agree. But isn't him trying to convince himself to mean it not going against the tattoo? Sort of like: The tattoo can't prevent him from going through a door (big C), but is allowed to prevent him from walking *towards* the front of the door, if the reason for it is purely to go against the tattoo? I'd imagine by that time, the big C would interve on a case by case basis...

JJ Hunter

Alden trying to tell Stu he has some very large secrets left to tell, and he's not ready yet to close massive numbers of doors again taking that leap yet without actually telling Stu he has secrets of that caliber to disclose yet-! Oof. It's kind of convenient Boe called right at the end there where Alden was actually mad enough to tell Boe what bit of that being mad was Alden being mad at *Boe*. Boe is someone Alden feels safe being mad around.

JennP

Alden is always so careful and thoughtful about what he says and how he treats people. I actually think this blow up at Boe is good. He should hit Boe with a facefull of honesty. He deserves it and maybe needs it. They both do.

Catherine

I loved that moment at the end of Alden describing what happened at the market and Stuart not approving of Alden bowing. The differences in their positions in artonan society are made clear for a moment. It was so real, especially Stuart's reluctance to acknowledge it. It was very well done and when Stuart said he'd contemplate it 'threateningly' (according to Alden) it made me smile and laugh.

Fabian

I just realized Tailor Environment is not just a skill in the book, but a real life skill. I feel like I live in a dump, things scattered about and not fitting together.

Aspiring Moth

I wonder if Esh-erdi could pressure Ro-den into breaking the contract in exchange for legal immunity and a favour of some sort. I can see a scenario where Alden tries to get the contract removed without telling Esh-erdi what it was about

The soup is thick and full of contemplative moments. Thank you

puppy0cam

I'm just imagining Alden barging into Ro-den's room with Ro-den in a state of undress, Alden demanding a conversation with him and without giving him a chance to react, immediately drags him to the nine edged son to talk about secrets in the middle of the ocean, and a random wizard seeing a naked Ro-den being dragged by the arm to the nine edged son.

Guus van der Borg

I don't understand Alden's reluctance to say 'I cannot talk about this'. None of the things he talked about with Joe are a big deal for him at this point. And pointedly saying what he CANNOT talk about will only push Stu in the right direction to find the skill he has on his own. The stuff he wants to hide from Stu, his authority sense, does not fall under the contract. I really don't get it.

Francis

"I think I have a fair understanding of the concepts that are essential to your skill, but I was wondering if there might be something I haven’t thought of in the way you used it when you saved her." I'm immediately wondering why the above incident didn't fit in with Stuart's "data" he has collected on Alden's skill. The concepts are pretty much the same whether Alden is touching the person or not (protection, preservation etc.). So what is the anomaly about that incident that doesn't fit in with the concepts he already collected? I'm thinking if there is something we don't understand about protecting someone from a distance. Maybe it would by default require a person to completely and utterly devote their mindset to the object they are protecting (and Stu knows this). Then, the protector is not in charge anymore, they are actually getting pulled and changed by the person they are protecting. They are in a position of vulnerability, not strength. Thus, BoaB could also have concepts of devotion and almost servitude built in. Perhaps it would be suspicious if a skill is so broad and has so many concepts connected to it - it could automatically reveal Alden's skill to be an older one when wizards didn't try to keep the purpose of a skill very narrow. Anyway, I don't know if I'm even making sense.

skinnywhite

Thank you for the chapter! I've been waiting for Aiden to be blunt with Boe that's is lame to be upset that Alden is forming a friendship with Stuart. They're good enough friends that Boe can take it. I'm surprised that I'm this time of stress and frustration Alden didn't again express how much he hates Ro-den. He's done it before to Stu, and based on conversations with Lute, it seems fine to reveal that a tattoo is preventing answers to questions. And Lute was allowed to explain that his misdirections in one particular area were deliberate to give a clue about the actual answer.

Robert Mullins

The contract forbids Alden from acting in a way he believes would reveal the information he was given by Joe. Saying I can't talk about this because of a contract is a very obvious way to get someone to look into his skill and so Alden can't say it.

WannaBeATree

You asume the contracts are the same. Alden has a marriage lvl contract, while Lute has a prisoner lvl one.

BelligerentGnu

Way too short. >< Also, gods, fuck that fucking contract. It needs to go yesterday. And Stu needs to figure out Alden's skill.

WannaBeATree

Yeah, it is like Stu looks at the skill and sees the word "apple", while it should actually be "fruit". So he is checking for things that fit apples and wouldn't you know it, most/all of them fit fruits as well, so he is not questioning it too hard. That one incident would point to something that does not make sense for apples but fits fruit in generall. Like the color blue for example. Alden also insisted on the word "preserve" at first and only started calling it "protect", because of the people around him being confused and him usually using it for protection. I think Stu's research direction is the consequence of Alden's misplaced focus. So Stu might think that Alden's limitations are because of the underlying concepts - which Alden keeps bringing up - and not just designed training wheels.

WannaBeATree

Yeah, I loved that part. Alden can't really say that he is playing the part of a child in need of instructions, to get away without consequences, if he acts like an adult would.

MelRein H

Ironically the contract is almost certainly the only thing keeping alden on earth. He tried telling Stuart during his sleepover, and here while he wanted to give only hints, hints are still a gamble since Stuart is actively researching. As far as they're all aware. Its just a preservation skill that rabbits may use to move things. "Let me take your luggage." Roden confirmed that it would simply look like an inefficient skill. With his father being the primary, almost certainly aware of the original skills... any clue could accelerate aldens time left on earth. They already expect to use him in his 30s. Still young and only one level up? Min max that original skill for the sake of the universe. (Doesn't help alden is already doing this).

Francis

You and me both. Clutter makes my life feel cluttered, but I live with two people with ADHD, and I am not the most high energy person. So the piles keep getting babies and I'm fighting a losing battle trying to clear them.

Kemlion

The poor mattress. The poor Alden. The poor Stuart. The poor pillow. Darn you contract.

J Reynolds

Esh probably could pressure Ro-den in such a way. Esh might have the authority to temporarily overpower the contract, although that might be more difficult because Joe and Alden were in close agreement about their contract. Overwhelming a contract when one party hates and chafes against it is one thing. Overwhelming a strong contract? Probably very difficult.

WannaBeATree

I just notices how Sleyca had Stu talk about healing books that are under the light and knight books being in the shadow. Very nice symbolism! (I hope it's called symbolism)

denatured

Alden might never be able to slice a moon in half, but someday he'll be able to preserve an asteroid, turn it to point at the moon, and destroy everything on it.

Fabian

We did not see the Knights' bureaucracy yet. There should be clerks. There should be pencil pushers. There should be application forms for getting various things done. And there should be a statue. There is always a statue. A symbol for knights. A parliament. Offices. Society.

Anthony Lutz

Your describing votaries, the knights themselves are too busy fighting chaos or strengthening themselves for that task that they have no time to deal with paperwork.

denatured

Alden being mad that he can have nice easy things because then he has to actively turn them down to do the hard horrible thing he actually wants. I'm upset for him but it's also a bit funny. Relatably ridiculous.

Erin M

I feel like when Stu meets Boe, that’ll end up being the piece that clicks for knowing Alden’s skill. Boe helped him pick it, he knows it, *he* can say the name of it, but Alden can’t (I may be misunderstanding that and welcome correction).

WannaBeATree

I think he does not believe that he deserves being an exception to the rules. While completely forgetting/not knowing why the rules exist in the first place. To be fair, that statement could be applicable to (a lot) more than his situation.

Anthony Lutz

I wonder what timeframe Stu is expecting for Aldens next binding. I dont recall if Alden ever said he was "level 4" to Stu, but Stu knows he was would assume he was maxed out on free authority from the whole teleport to the forest return. so he as a 7 month 0-99.9% baseline. I realise circumstances are different, but hes had 3 months of high-quality skill practice, he should have (and has) gotten the affixation offer if he was a normal avowed. how long can Alden NOT get a level up that Stu can offer a new skill or spell for without it becoming odd. going another 6 months without it happening is going make him take notice. The school faculty already suspect he should have, but hasn't/wont due to mental health concerns and Earth not offering him one until hes in a better state of mind.

WannaBeATree

I think Boe will be weirded out how and why Alden was so angry. During a talk with Stu, he'll realise the timing was right after the call. The call that talked about skills and which afterwards Alden told Boe how awesome Stu is. Boe probably spent a lot of time thinking about contracts and could make the connection. It would be super funny, because then Boe and Stu would be keeping a secret from Alden. Some Karma there.

Makel Grax

Or, alternatively, see that a large chaos meteor is heading for a planet, and preserve the planet against impact.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

The way I see things, the great misery is here already (albeit caused by the triangle tattoo and not in the form Joe expected). So Alden has a very easy way out: saying "I will only speak about my skill with your father". No further explanations. Stu would be baffled but Alden *does* have permission to tell the Primary. Plus, such telling would take months until the next magical call in which he can finish his choosing season.

PhoenixPax

>>> “Why didn’t you tell him to be silent and feel the weight of his shame? Why did you bow and offer a fake apology?” Stuart has the Space-Autism real bad. I'm kind of shocked anyone in his family has thought he would make a good votary, with all the intricate social calculations. Even if he can do it, as we've seen, it would destroy him to be in that position long-term. Like a sort of hyper-masking. Honestly, he would be able to shine as a knight -- get so powerful he can safely be eccentric, and have a more neurotypical Artonan follow him around and do the masking for him. >>>“But that’s no reason—” >>>“You know what I mean. You just don’t like it.” Alden calls him out. Good for Alden! We all need that friend that reminds us of what the universe actually is, rather than what it ideally would be.

PhoenixPax

For those who want a refresher: “Ah, I would like to clarify a point. Today’s lesson is going to be special, you see. And I would like you to confirm specifically that you will not, through any means or by any permutation of interpretation, intentionally reveal the information I’m about to disclose to you with anyone else of any species without my permission. Ever.” Surprised but intensely curious, Alden thought through the wording. “That’s way too strict, isn’t it? It means even if I hear the information from someone other than you at some point, I still can’t ever repeat it. Or even act on it in a way that I thought would allow it to become known.” “Yes, that’s right. Anything I say that you’re already aware of is yours to do with as you please, but any new information I reveal falls under this agreement. Also you will not use this knowledge to advise or instruct another person in a fashion that would allow them to take advantage of it.” -Chapter 39 https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/63759/super-supportive/chapter/1228338/thirty-nine-lesson-one

This seems like a good opportunity to encourage Alden to teeeeeeeeeeelllllllllllll hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimmmmmmmmmmmmm. Thanks for the chapter!

VP

He can't. Metaphysically he can't. He is gagged 😞

VP

Without my permission. I had forgotten about that part. Joe owes him (and Stuart!) one. Maybe.....

Matt V

Here's my proposed contract workaround, let me know if you think this would work. Alden confesses to Boe that his frustration was about the contract preventing him from telling something to Stu. This reveals nothing to Boe since Boe lacks the underlying knowledge, so the contract does not complain. Stu gets his wish to meet Boe, and Boe can let Stu know that the contract on Alden wasn't allowing him to answer his questions in that convo. Granted, for this to work, I don't think Alden would be able to ask Boe to tell Stu any of this. And given Boe's paranoia, he'd never do this of his own volition. But in differing circumstances, I think that would be a way to get around the contract.

Shweta Narayan

I think what Ro-den meant by the Great misery was intensity level 99 -- reading that chapter it didn't seem like he agrees the chaos needs to be fought everywhere, and I'm pretty sure he thinks the knights are... self-inflicting misery at best? He's super selfish and can't imagine any emotional upside to protecting others -- he didn't even protect his ardent supporters on Thegund effectively, because it would have cost him a bit of leverage. meanwhile the misery for Alden is being alone with it, which is why triangle tattoo is causing it. So, the issue is that Alden doesn't necessarily want to talk to the Primary about it -- that would mean letting in high intensity early -- so it would still interfere with his Choosing Season. I feel like he's way past the point where he needs to talk to *Gorgon* about it though, so what he really needs is to get rid of triangle tattoo. I forget how it works, removing contact tattoos, but it's possible, right? And that would let him talk to Stu at least somewhat...

Kooikerhondjelover

I believe he can share his true profile with Stu and maybe Esh and Lind. He can also remind them that he still has a secrecy tattoo.. The fact alone that he has a fake profile from mother will make them curious and I assume the knights could ask mother for details on the skill in order to assist his education. I do not think Boe would entrust Stu with any of Aldens secrets.

Kooikerhondjelover

I like the idea of 5 day intervals instead of Sunday posts. Seems a good compromise . Let’s hope it works out for Sleyca. Oh, the title number got corrected. So we did not time skip after all..

Robert Mullins

I wonder if this will be enough to get Stu clued in to the fact that Alden has a secret or contract around his skill. This is the second time in my memory that Alden has choked up when asked about his skill. And Stu has a habit of contemplating his interactions with Alden.

Sleyca

Thank you for the well wishes! Right now we're still on the whenever it feels right/whenever I'm sure it'll be solid schedule. I think we'll average more than one chapter a week and a monthly word count similar to pre-redaction months, but I like not making it an official "weekly" or "sunday/wednesday" or "five day" yet just in case I do want to do some chapters of unusually short or long lengths. Or in case anything comes up that I just need to keep thinking about for longer.

Jared Obermeyer

I suppose little bouncing finger motions would not be allowed by that contract when Alden says different things about his skill.

KB

For Christmas I want Alden to *pat pat* Stu. please!

KB

out of context that sounds so weird, but you know what I mean!

KB

ooh, one more thing! Alden being unable to communicate because of the contract is calling to mind Gorgon trying to find a way to communicate with Alden about what skill he should choose despite not being allowed. I might go back and reread that scene.

KB

I'd love to read a scene from Stu's POV with him figuring this out.

Adamanus

Ro-den's beliefs about chaos inevitably destroying them all are probably part and parcel to his beliefs about Avowed being an existential threat to the Artonans.

Terrestrial_Biped

It's not that Stu doesn't understand. It's that Stu doesn't want to face the fact that such an honest action would have nasty consequences for Alden, but the son of the Primary could get away with it scott free. Being reluctant to address his privilege is a normal consequence of being privileged. But he is a good guy; now that Alden has called him on it, he'll think it through.

Adamas Shield

The funnier way for dealing with the contract since it was kind of tilted/unbalanced to the mage direction even with the ?druid? System help. Would to use that as sacrifice if possible or reduce in power by doing a bit of sacrifice like offering the spell impression. If this works like that I mean.

Sleyca

The following is a comment from J Reynolds, who got hit with Patreon's comment filtering on this post. Begin J Reynolds comment: "A comment by @skinnywhite earlier: 'it seems fine to reveal that a tattoo is preventing answers to questions.' To which @wannabeatree responded: 'Alden has a marriage lvl contract, while Lute has a prisoner lvl one.' ------- Lute's contract with Aulia was specifically identified by the tattooist Rekiss-tha as being imperfect and out of balance. '"Aulia, this one aligns very poorly with you. He is agreeing to your terms barely, but your minds will not be one. You are against one another again and again."' Lute can work against Aulia's contract because their interests do not align. The contract that is made is explicitly weak. '"[It] is too complicated… It doesn’t settle properly with so much weighing on it,"' Rekiss emphasized. Lute has a lot of authority, so his ability to work against his contract is strong. I think that this is where the gremlin is making Alden's life difficult. The gremlin ensured that Alden and Joe were in close accord, understood well, and agreed fully that their contract would be binding. There was no room for fingers crossed behind their backs. (Although Joe obviously meant that he himself should have wiggle room.) Result: Alden is strongly circumscribed. Even telling that he has a contract of secrecy when in Alden's opinion telling about it could lead to discovery is impossible. Talking to Boe about the existence of the contract back in intake was fine. There was zero chance that this would reveal BoaB, since Boe has no such sources of information. Talking to Stu, someone who has the pull to discover this? Not so much." End J Reynolds comment. I've temporarily turned off the comment filter to keep this from happening to people. Hopefully that works!

Isak Mark

It's been 200 chapters Alden's secrecy is getting really tired.

How do I get to be J Reynolds and have Sleyca personally narrate all my patreon comments?

Sleyca

I sometimes like to imagine Mother's relationship with various knights and what kinds of inside jokes she might have with people like the Primary and Alis.

GWJ

Just noticed that Alden refers to the motorcyclist as Graham’s “promised spouse”, not fiancée. This is because he’s speaking Artonan and that’s their term for it. It’s one of many tiny details that Sleyca weaves in here to add to the verisimilitude. I don’t always notice the details, but I do notice the effect.

Sleyca

You must be bullied unjustly by Patreon when I happen to be online to notice!

František Novák

Is Alden still wearing his 112 T-shirt?

SkippyARC

I spent an hour looking for all the details I could find! Chapter 29 has all the details of the contract with him and Joe. "They had already agreed that the purpose of the contract and anything they said to one another within the walls of Hot Lab 7 were never to be shared in any fashion with another living soul." In the same chapter, is the message from the system, "IT IS YOUR RIGHT TO FORM ADDITIONAL CONTRACTS, BUT THE INTERDIMENSIONAL WARRIOR’S CONTRACT CANNOT BE OVERWRITTEN." I can't yet find any specific wording to The Contract other than the speech and system notice in chapter 12. I hope his duty to The Contract lets him circumvent the triangle of absolute secrecy...

Charles

If the contract is this picky then I don’t see how it will ever let him become a Knight. That would be rather more than suspicion.

Anthony Lutz

I think it will qualify as "serving artona" which makes the Big C override the little c. But also Ro-den also never expected Alden to get authority awareness and get on this highly accelerated timeline.

Heckate

What happens if there's literally no action you can take that will prevent you from violating a contract? I get the feeling that Worli Ro-den is going to get in serious trouble again for this...

PhoenixPax

Also helpful to look here: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/63759/super-supportive/chapter/1228338/thirty-nine-lesson-one “Touch the ‘Triangle of Absolute Secrecy,’ please.” Alden stared at his back. “We already reconfirmed the contract for today.” “Ah, I would like to clarify a point. Today’s lesson is going to be special, you see. And I would like you to confirm specifically that you will not, through any means or by any permutation of interpretation, intentionally reveal the information I’m about to disclose to you with anyone else of any species without my permission. A minor note: I think “My friend…will you really say such a thing about such a thing to such a one as me?” Would be more readable as “My friend…will you really say such a thing to such a one as me?” I think my eye skipped over the double 'things' on the first read, stumbled over it on the re-read. The original is more funny, but it's less readable, and this doesn't strike me as a moment where Stu would be trying to inject levity.

PhoenixPax

People like Grand Senator Servin-ith are more concerned with the comfort of the present generation than the survival of future ones.” Stuart doesn't even know he's priming the pump with Alden's choosing season here. I like how this arc re-write keeps both sides of Alden's choices firmly in both the background and foreground of his mind.

Marcus Rodriguez

Alden has one way and one way only to let Stu in the secret of his skill: show both profiles. Because it is an action allowed by the contract, Joe's contract cannot stop it and Stu would immediately understand the high level of the skill and the enchant rider means he has uncapped skill (and is a wizard).

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Maybe there will be a surprise where we get to find out the gremlin has bargained for some escape clause on Alden’s behalf Seems to be able to tap into your deep subconscious (Alden remembered his mothers heartbeat in the womb or smth)

Super Super Supportive Supporter

To the people asking what happens if he’s trapped: “Ah, I would like to clarify a point. Today’s lesson is going to be special, you see. And I would like you to confirm specifically that you will not, through any means or by any permutation of interpretation, intentionally reveal the information I’m about to disclose to you to anyone else of any species without my permission. Ever.” Is fine if it’s not intentional! Though I wonder if that means at some point he’s forced to just tell Stu ‘I don’t want to be your friend anymore, I’m not coming over again’ because anything less would be intentionally placing himself in situations where discovery is likely Of course, that won’t happen bc that’s narratively bad, but hypothetically…

Jeff Wells

I can't really peg why but your version sounds very pretentious to me, while Stu's with the extra "such a thing" doesn't. It just sounds like an awkward phrasing, exactly the kind of thing a non-native English speaker might occasionally say.

Dervish

I was just noticing that Alden had a conversation with Joe (chapter 39, I believe? Near there, at least) where Joe suggested Alden /never/ take a new skill, either from the system or from other wizards. This kind of negates so much of Stu's efforts, and his secrecy tattoo prevents him from saving his friend from doing more research.

puppy0cam

> Actually, Ro-den claims that all we’ve ever known is ultimately doomed to be overwhelmed no matter what we do, but his actions don’t make sense to me if that’s really what he thinks Ro-den believing that and simultaneously leading cutting edge chaos research does make sense to me. Even if our efforts will be forgotten by history eventually, that doesn't mean they never happened. Ceasing to exist is a natural part of existence. That is true for animals, people, worlds, stars, black holes, and even the universe. You can't keep holding on forever but you *can* hold on to the fraying ends of reality for as long as possible before they finally slip out of your grasp.

WannaBeATree

Oh sh*t! That's such a good point! It could absolutely happen! Mother might even get involved at that point! Stu could call Boe on his own to ask wtf happened! Or vice versa. So many incredible ways to escalate the situation in a realistic way! :)

WannaBeATree

You put that very nicely! :) I agree. It's like cranking up the intensity without having a more urgent deadline.

tootiestatue056

nice idea, but if alden knows that it leads to stu finding out then it counts as 'intention'

At the same time, Roden is unwilling to sacrifice his happiness for the cause - because the cause is hopeless and all will die in the end. Roden is a bit of a paradox - he looks down on those sacrifice too much and despises the powerful who ignore the chaos and live as it does not exist.

David

“… People like Grand Senator Servin-ith are more concerned with the comfort of the present generation than the survival of future ones.” … “… I *can* go to the Christmas market one day and have a ton of friends and a giant family waiting for me there. And it would be a great trip with no mishaps.” Is he preemptively feeling guilty for having a family instead of fighting chaos? That’s rough. When he talks like this, it’s like he’s already made his decision but doesn’t like it…

J Reynolds

Maybe we could use hypnotism here? Make ourselves forget the entire story, then read the note from ourselves: Hey Super Super Supportive Supporter. You will want to read this series called Super Supportive. You'll like it. I won't steer you wrong! Sincerely, Super Super Supportive Supporter

WannaBeATree

Huh, you are right. That sentence is weird. I didn't realise. It's as if he thinks that a knight is a state of being instead of a job that people do. As if the knight option means doing knight stuff 24/7. Now I am remembering how he commented how hardcore it was that Lind and Esh celebrated their *wedding* fighting chaos. As if he thinks even a celebration must be done in service to knighthood. If he realises that he could also just only do a few missions when he feels like it, he's gonna be mindblown. :)

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Using a combination of Sways and negative wordchains, Alden should be able to make himself so impulsive that nothing counts as intentional, bypassing Joe’s contract as long as he doesn’t think that he’s doing this in order to let the secret out

Jazehiah

Where do Avowed fit into the social heirarchy of the Triplanets? Obviously, the Artonan breakdown is something like, 1. Knights 2. Wizards (ordered by accomplishments... kinda) 3. Ordinary Who a person works for also matters a /ton/ for determining where they land in the pecking order. The ordinary people of resource worlds are probably a step below ordinary Artonans. Their people were subjugated, after all. But Avowed are strange. Avowed have a shadow of magic. They can be more powerful than a wizard, but they /must/ obey their summoner. My gut tells me they should fall between the Ordinary and Wizard class because of their magic, but that doesn't quite seem right. They are not Artonans, so they might be between Ordinary Artonans and Ordinary resource-world species. This is where the whole heirarchy of employers comes into play. Most Artonans will never meet an Avowed who is not actively working for a member of the Wizard (or Knight) class. Similarly, Ordinary-class Artonans are not likely to meet ordinary species of the resource worlds unless they are working for wizards themselves. For example, in a house of healing or as an ambassador's assistant. It's a very interesting dynamic.

puppy0cam

Avowed are above the ordinary class. To paraphrase Sophie "A servant with power is more valuable than one without"

Lyssur

Everyone in the comments works hard to think of ways for Alden to sidestep the contract with Ro-den, but I think by far the most important reason that will not happen is that he doesn't really want to. He's too honorable a person. He made the contract with Ro-den in good faith, knowing what was being vowed. Ro-den delivered- I would say he delivered mostly because Alden made him vow to do his sincere best effort, and that was so culturally ingrained he could not sidestep it with a different perspective, but no matter- the important thing is he did. Alden might not like the price of the info, but he accepted it, and sharing it goes against that. If he tried to share, not only would the contract tie him up, but his gremlin too, so concerned with fair play, and also his morals. He hates Worli Ro-den for setting absolute secrecy as the price, but will pay it as agreed. He might ultimately want to share the information- but not by going around the contract, or overpowering it, etc. Instead, he would look for permission- and from what we know of Ro-den, he really, really does not want to give it, as sharing it will likely implicate him in even more crimes. How he could be convinced to give permission will likely be a long story, and perhaps the price will be even worse than the one already paid.

Alex Scriber

As long as Alden does it with the intent to obfuscate I think it would be fine. It would pretty in character for him to joke around that way “my skill is bearer of all keda beans,” would fit in there with joking about maker of narrow ways for keda beans and some of the other jokes we’ve seen.

I dipped for a while, around the Great Redaction of Yookie's Debut. Having come back, I think the Christmas arc is going well. I was worried it would feature too much Christmas charm and not enough of business as usual, but things are definitely still moving in a way I enjoy. That said, and I don't want to sound more negative than I am-- Alden is really miraculous in how much he can skirt the edge of telling someone something consequential without ever doing it. This chapter made me think "Man, he's really getting close to going Loud Rabbit," but then I realized I was saying that almost 200 chapters ago, too. Just the quietest rabbit who ever lived, he is.

I'm really glad Sleca has changed the way she's releasing chapters. It seems to be less stressfull for her. This should be a fun challenge, not a grind that wears her down.

The Importance of Contracts I think contracts are very important to Artonans in general and to wizards in particular. Most wizards, when described to us, have multiple tattoos. Each of those is a contract with another person. Contracting with another is clearly important to them and something that they all do. It’s socially acceptable and normal. The first Contract took the agreement and participation of 1/3 of the living wizards two thousand years ago to create – that’s how widespread contract magic must be. Earth’s planetary enchantment is also a Contract with the Artonans. Each Avowed is under the Interdimensional Warrior Contract. Stu was horrified that Ro-den broke the contract on his followers on Thegund – which he did as part of his negotiating contract. Ro-den is a rogue who does these sorts of things to advance himself. Breaking a contract isn’t a normal thing to do, in fact quite the reverse IMO. Suppressing a contract through your greater Authority from how Stu narrated Roden and the Grand Senator’s wife felt like that was socially unacceptable also. All that goes to make me feel that Contracts are a vital and integral part of Artonan normal life. Contracts are used to enforce significant agreements with Wizards – probably because of power imbalances between the participants. Erasing a completed and no longer active Contract seemed to be OK – Esh did it to Alden, that’s OK. An active Contract is very different. Esh didn’t offer to do anything to Alden’s even though it must have been clear to him that it was negatively affecting Alden and he was very interested in Alden’s welfare at the time. I would expect that breaking someone else’s contract is both illegal and socially repugnant to do. A Contract is something willingly entered into by the participants. The strength of that Contract depends on the understanding and agreement of the participants as well as the strength of the strongest. Alden and Ro-den’s contract was agreed to and accepted by both parties and Alden’s understanding as enforced by the Gremlin was woven into the contract by Ro-den. Simply because it is inconvenient and uncomfortable is no reason to violate the contract. Alden genuinely gained 20+ years of knowledge about his skill and skills in general that he could not have gotten anywhere else at the cost of not revealing that knowledge and protecting Ro-den (Very Naughty Wizard according to Mother) from retribution about revealing restricted knowledge. It was and is a fair trade between Alden and Ro-den. Ultimately I don’t see other wizards (or Knights) breaking Alden’s contract. Now Alden asking Ro-den to include Stu in the reveal of information while Ro-den binds Stu in some way might be a way forwards. That may be something Ro-den would do for his own future advancement and to recover his social and societal position. I don’t see Ro-den doing it unless he benefits from it, why should he? Ro-den is not a nice guy!

Armo

I do think it might make selfish sense for Ro-Den to modify the contract somewhat. Forcing Alden to run interference, as the current contract does, makes it a lot more likely Ro would be suspected of spilling info to Alden than allowing Alden to let the information be discovered naturally, provided he doesn’t directly aid in its discovery. Ro is heavily incentivised to stop hitting his head on branches going down, so he might just listen.

WannaBeATree

That got me thinking... Alden could make a similar contract with Ro-den, but with reversed positions this time. That'd be karma. Then Alden could tell him that he is a wizard, thereby saving Ro-den 20 years of guess work about Alden. As a price, he could ask him for exceptions to the original secrecy contract.

Is it possible for Alden to do like Lute, and explain his tattoo stops him from explaining things about his skill, or did Joe somehow prevent this with an extra level of secrecy?

The wagon model should get spray-painted on side: "Beware of winter snakes!"

We are definitely hitting 'Alden has a Yell in his throat that he's contractually obligated not to voice too directly in front of Stu' levels of boil now, which makes me think Alden is going to act on the Ro-den end of the problem soon. Alden needed some restored security, healing, and growth to feel able to take big risks again. He's had all three, and grown much closer to Stu in the process. It's not a question of if but a question of when now, and how much control of his life Alden will be able to retain in the aftermath. That's a fascinating narrative tension trick to pull off with elements of secret identity - is there anything else Alden 'needs' before he feel he can tell Stu (if he can figure out a way to tell Stu)? Does Alden need to see Boe in person again so Boe can perceive Alden is actually stable enough to make a real choice about this and not just another under-considered sacrifice? Does he need a hug from Aunt Connie and some reassurance he will always have family with her even as she's marrying in to another family? Does he need another talk with Mother elaborating on how he might be able to retain Quiet Rabbit and still add some other Persona options to switch to at will (Wizard Rabbit? Hn'tyon Punzee Thorn? C'mon, Alden, you're training to be a superhero, spawning some additional personas to protect your private life is practically tradition in this genre!).

“I am sure Hn’tyon Alis-art’h’s opinions are considerate and nuanced,” said Zeridee. “But those opinions are definitely in opposition to the faction, or factions, that believe every Avowed should be a harmless Ryeh-b’t,” said Alden. “Is that right? Bash-nor’s not just irritated she commended me. He thinks I don’t deserve one and that she only did it to make some kind of a statement.” A statement about how humans were too brave to be relegated to Rabbithood maybe. Or even about how someone being a Rabbit wouldn’t stop knights from summoning them and using them griveck style. Alis-art’h held me together while she helped me write my will. And Bash-nor imagines that while she was doing that, she was busy thinking about how to use me to stick it to him and whoever else thinks like him? Like I’m so unimportant I couldn’t possibly be the main factor in the equation. He had never felt more like he deserved the commendation than he did right now. “I’m going to have it embroidered on a t-shirt with a ryeh-b’t on the front and then walk back and forth in front of the embassy.” “Don’t.” Zeridee’s voice had turned to steel. Alden felt his indignation fade as he took in her expression. “I wasn’t that serious.” “Take him seriously. Anesidora is now full of wizards who Bash-nor will often be busy with, and Esh-erdi has made it very clear that he’s invested in your wellbeing. It’s not worth it to the ambassador to remain offended by your commendation, so he won’t. But if you ever meet him, be what he expects a Ryeh-b’t to be. “He is intolerant of slights from those weaker than him. And he is prone to pleasurable excesses that sometimes make him lose his fear of consequences.” Alden’s seat suddenly felt a lot less comfortable. “I wish you didn’t work for someone like that.” “He’ll be gone soon enough,” said Zeridee. “And I have chosen to be here on Earth surrounded by Avowed for my own reasons.”

Every now and then I think about the scope of Colibrí's ambitions for how Alden might help CNH politically vs. the magnitude of Alden's impact so far as an accidental one man diplomatic corps for Earth to the Artonans, and I have to chuckle. Broke: Have Alden help the maintenance wizards calibrate the CNH gym magic and maybe invite the generals to stop by. Youth + Rabbit + Commendation = Big Wizard Favors, win-win! Woke: Have Alden passionately enthuse to a visiting *Grand Senator* about the camaraderie-promoting value of magical gyms for CNH and other high schools Bespoke: Have Alden spend the last several months sending homemade videos and select Earth internet highlights to Kibv-ee and Stu-art'h, who have the close attention of the Quaternary and the Primary respectively.

JJ Hunter

How did Stu put it again? Chapter 239: “Their principles have been preyed upon by time” Stuart said dryly. “You’ve seen how eager they are to help themselves to my fruit baskets.” “I’m *corrupting* the family of the Primary and the Quaternary.” “The state of things was already changing,” Stuart said in a more serious voice. “They say the first Rapport tends to change at Father and Aunt Alis’s pace. I believe the two of them just haven’t had time to think much about humans over the last several years. But Aunt Alis has recently been offended by the justifications of a group that wants Earth to have a higher percentage of Ryeh-b’t Avowed. And Father got to meet you after you helped me!”

A yes! The well known annual migration of Snakes to Chicago... People need to be made aware!!

does Stu know that Boe is a contract refuser? I feel like that perspective will be really interesting to Stu if it comes up.

“I’m sorry about all of this,” Alden said when Rao was gone. He shifted his grip on the large shopping bag that Hadiza had given him for easier turkey hauling. “I thought I was asking a few friends for help, but everything got crazier than I planned.” “I’m here to add to it,” said the Principal, passing him an accordion folder. “But at least it’s not food. Let’s try and keep the next few holidays on the calendar simpler.” “I will.”

He really should have said "I will try." Because he really isn't likely to succeed.

Chapter Predictions!

puppy0cam

Some people are really getting sick of hearing Mariah Carey's voice at the shops. Riots break out. Boe reveals Alden's secret to Stu in an attempt to get him the psychological help he needs... and while he's in the business of revealing secrets he also talks about Gorgon and how suddenly and strangely Alden's dietary restrictions came about. Not to mention the attempt to figure out Gorgon's hints for what skill to get. Stuart slips on a banana peel I just realised my prediction about flying pigs kinda sorta came true when Alden protected trash-nor Post Drop #1301 (aka Leo) is removed from active service pending a criminal investigation into its creator. Yookee comes in riding a literal wrecking ball they rigged up to fly because they couldn't get the appropriate permissions to leave matadero and enter anesidora Oops, Alden got food poisoning and needs to stay in bed for a few days.

PhoenixPax

I feel like with Boe being a unique with nasty powers, Stu would respect a principled stance not to risk becoming available to unsavory wizards.

I think the whole Bash-nor incident is actually an important part of Alden's choosing season. He is effectively the highest ranking human in the Artonan empire and that's only going to get more pronounced once he's a knight. So even if he doesn't set out to do it, he will be an ambassador for humanity occasionally with all the messy social intricacies that go with it. Bash-nor and Servin-ith are giving him some food for thought on what to do and what not to do as someone in that role and some of the challenges he will face. Edit to add: also a good lesson for Stuart too. There are some situations where technically correct is the wrong answer compared to a soothing pleasant polite nothing and backing away as quickly as possible.

@Super Super Supportive Supporter referred to a conversation with Zeridee and Alden in the Matadero hospital where she said a lot, and there was a bit in there I wanted to extract bc it seemed important: “And I have chosen to be here on Earth surrounded by Avowed for my own reasons.”

Cassie Brooks

I wonder if that reason is related to the choice to stop using magic. Or if it was a class choice? Is there something about Human Avowed that is upsetting or important to Zeridee?

That quick and dirty Artonan political primer Alden got from Joe is really proving its weigh in argold. Can't wait to find out what Ro makes of Alden's latest exploits...

Hi there, amazing fellow human being. Author. Sleyca. I need to warn you that you've had a significant impact on someone else's life. Mine, here. See, I started maybe two weeks ago your story. And read it. And read more. Then I became excited, because maybe a hundred chapters in, I saw an authors note saying happy new year 2024. I had SO MUCH MORE to read ! And now I'm done. It was a jolt, an error in reality, when the "next" button was greyed out on Royal Road. I mean, I'd clicked it 250-ish times. What was that ? No more ? What ? That moment made me realize I've developed a little bit of an addiction. And dropped all my other usual hobbies for the past weeks. And it was going to end. And I'm so happy ! And I'm so sad ! And I've learned so much about myself ! And I feel lost ! Making others feel emotions is, in my opinion, the highest proof of success of a story. And you did that so many times. Your story talks about rarely seen themes, trauma first and foremost. I've been through repeated trauma, I've had trouble fitting in reality for years. Wandering what I was doing still here, alive, what I was supposed to do, what I wanted even to do. I still don't have an answer to these questions, but I feel less alone, thanks to Alden, thanks to you. And I got materials to steep for a few months from this story. The type of hero is so easy to translate to daily life. I ended up in depression, burned out, because I chased an ideal of myself that I was not. I knew it, but now, after following Alden through his own realisation... I *know* it. It's not just a concept anymore, me still secretly sure that I should still try to be the one I'm not. I've tried earlier this week to find who I now want to be, that is also attainable and sustainable. And it's only one example. There are at least two more I could write an essay on, and probably a hundred smaller ways my perception of my world evolved through your story, through your words. So... If you ever read this ... Thank you. And I hope *you* are alright. It's hard to tell someone of something you're not familiar with. I really, really hope your days will be sunny and peaceful. Take some of my karma, please.

Fellow reader, I am glad you shared your thoughts here. I discovered Super Supportive while going through some fairly intense therapy for a trauma in my past, and have also often found Alden's journey to be a helpful parallel to my own. Feel free to add more essays in the comments! This tends to be a pretty active discussion space, though it wanes and waxes over time. I will add my own thanks to Sleyca here, under yours. A supportive author worth supporting, in my view.

“Which of the hn’tyons is it?” asked Alden “General Esh-erdi.” Her frown was worried, her voice nearly sub-audible. <> “Why would I leave?” Alden replied. “He’s nice, I have his nonagon, and I need to ask him about a corn snake.”

Sometimes I wonder if Sleyca lives in Point Nemo, like Anesidora, since their post day is usually after the vast majority of the planet's population is well into the next day already.

Somehow I completely forgot that Alden's crisis wardrobe + carrying an injured Artonan in desperate need of emergency medical care started not with Kibby but with Stu. No wonder Stu got so obsessed with Alden right when Alden disappeared! I bet the Primary got Stu that video not necessarily to teach him a lesson, but because Stu was desperate to know exactly what happened when he gave up and [gave into what could have been a mindsnare] permitted Alden to take him into Alden's protection. Stu probably needed to know on existential level if he remembered the whole thing correctly (remember, he was under the influence of the camaraderie of celebrants at that time!) and whether there was any break in his experience vs. what actually happened that might threaten all his progress proving he didn't need his mom's final gift to cope with existence any more, and he was still tough enough to follow through on declaring for the hn'tyon path.

I just realised the perfect present for Alden to give Stu for Christmas! He can return the piece of foot he's kept.

Happy The Thanksgiving to any Americans reading. Sadly I cannot persevere for soup... I'll just have to read it when I wake up 😔

Alright, I am now officially worried about Sleyca. She better either be sleeping or get a good amount of sleep later.

calm down, theres still no set schedule so its not definitely going to come out exactly when sleyca predicts. people need to chill.

Chances on a holiday double chapter?

JJ Hunter

The Artonans Alden has chosen to serve so far that he's been really committed to serving: - A boy from a knight family born to the wizarding class who declares for the hn'tyon path to the dismay of his family - A girl from a loyal assistant's family born to the ordinary class who declares for the wizarding path to the dismay of her family (and her family's wizard, for that matter) - A woman from a knight family born to the wizarding class who declares for the ordinary path, also likely to the dismay of her family I'm starting to sense a bit of a pattern here, Alden.

JJ Hunter

I've been wondering (and worrying) for a while that Alden may be a little too inclined to serve again those he's previously chosen to serve to the degree that he feels drawn to them like gravity. Alden sure went from 'I don't want to meet a grand senator, Zeridee' to 'sure, let's get Bash-nor fired since I think that's what really want, Zeridee' REALLY fast there. I'm starting to wonder if that's not a one-way path of influence - maybe the people Alden has chosen to serve and take into his authority to preserve their lives also feel like they can trust Alden more readily if they need help again. Zeridee has been quietly counteracting Bash-nor for so long, and trying so hard to protect various vulnerable human Avowed from his petty cruelties. Ordinarily, I can't imagine she would do anything to bring Alden back to his attention again, even with an extraordinary opportunity like Grand Senator Servin-ith there to help protect Alden. Maybe Zeridee also was influenced by Alden's past service to ask him for help where she previously wasn't asking *anyone* for help?

Eva

sleyca is cooking up something special for us, for sure

While I do understand Alden fears about an uncertain future when he is a revealed wizard, his utterly cowardly and lying behaviour especially towards Stuat actually makes me furious and is one of the reasons I drop this story every few weeks for a few weeks or months until picking it up again in the hopes he finally grew some balls concerning his relationships. Every good trait he brings just gets tainted by him being this dishonest towards somebody he actually considers a friend. He might be a good person at heart, but he is ultimately untrustworthy towards his closest people and that contract doesn't help whatsoever. It feels like it will end in massive disaster and only get worse the longer he tries to keep everything hidden from his best friends.

Korrasis

It's definitely time for alden to atleast tell Stuart. In all honesty he needs to tell Stuart, and esh erdi and lind otta. He should do so in stuarts home with the help of the mother.

When Stu asked for grapes for Christmas it made me smile. I am such a fruitbat that when I was around 14 my granny gave me a small box of apricots and 2 punnet of grapes for my birthday. I was thrilled 😊

FYI for Sleyca (in the possibly unlikely event that you review old comments): this chapter hasn't been made public yet despite the one before and after it being available.

Oh dear! Hopefully 266 will be made public soon - the comment section awaits fresh eyes.
