“Stop that,” said Alden. “You’re as bad as…some person who kept being self-deprecating in the supply library." Hmm... who was that person again? I just can't quite seem to remember. Was it Ashden? Or possibly Alex? 😉

Gorgon can sacrifice authority to ”grant wishes” (sort of). I wonder what kind of wishes could be granted by sacrificing the primary’s authority. ”Fixing” chaos?

I am so glad, Stu is aware of the reason behind Alden‘s flight. He will find a way to sort it out with Ro-den. I picture him summoning Ro-den to his side at the old Raport 1 house, have him bound by a tree and offer him not to reveal his actions in exchange of releasing Alden from his promise.

Jazehiah

What are the odds that someone has already found Alden's "in case I die this weekend" notes?

its_raven!

Okay so Gorgon is on earth for unspecified reasons and is assumed to be the last of his people. His people, from what we know of the Gremlin, are huge fans of balance and have like this intrinsic drive to correct it when they can. The imprisonment is relatively recent, the problem of Chaos is also relatively recent. Chaos, as has been explained in the chapter is basically an imbalance. Am I crazy or does this seem like almost directly connected

Like... Victor? It is vacation time, and I am under the impression that Alden is alone in the apartment with Lute. Who normally has zero incentive to inspect his stuff. But if it's the situation of "look what the cat dragged in" - all bets are off.

Gorgon is almost certainly the only magically capable member of his species that isn't in a sealed dimension. If that wasn't the case, they wouldn't be trying so hard to keep him comfortable during his imprisonment with a cushy role as the *receptionist* of a *diplomatic mission* no matter how far out in the (relative to the triplets) boonies that embassy is.

Maybe the Artonan justice would be better off if it replaced executioners with Gorgon for the highest profile cases. "You wanted fame and broke the humans' only home? Now we take away your name, and your authority will be used by our esteemed judge to patch up Matadero. Welcome to the ordinary class!" This is what I call a good deterrent.

JJ Hunter

I treasure Stu's response to the challenge of Alden's human voice limitations and his deep desire to still learn to speak with adult eloquence in Artonan as he is able. "'Maybe daharsee? It means your own reflection, but it’s almost exclusively used by poets to give the idea that the reflection isn’t quite true to the self. Calling it that…might be very eloquent.' A nuanced, poetic word suitable for a human voice. A tool for him."

JJ Hunter

There's also a wisdom in using a different diction for a << remnant of a wizard’s command >> that inherently acknowledges that that echo of the self imprinted on the universe will never be wholly true to the self voicing that command, and therefore that chasing reasserting it can never fully remove all the distortions. Imperfection is part of the nature of reflections; even the clearest reflections are still partial, shallow, flat relative to the full self they are reflecting. They only return one view, one angle of one's aspect, not a full record. Given that Alden felt irritation the more he tuned into the increasing distortion of his 'voice' in its fading, and responded instinctively by asserting himself, "insisting on himself and insisting that the spell match back up with him", that poet's reminder may be a vital one for his path.

The art’h name is a resource Stu is preparing to use. It was also a shield in the mishnen incident. Using it now against Joe could give Joe reason to retaliate. It may still be an asymmetric power distribution, but it’s not entirely one-sided.

I wonder if MBF is capable of document recreation based on shredded paper. Perhaps Alden should burn the letters rather than shred them. Though it is kind of funny to imagine Elias's masterpiece spy network resort to dumpster diving for scraps of paper to gather intel from people of interest.

Markus

The Mishnen situation dont really matter? It would at worst cause Stu to be expelled, but would also burn the Bridges for all other students involves that Ro wanted to use. It is like treaten to expell the student of some major political block because they did some unsafe studies without supervision while you are currently holding that students friend very self imprisoned. It would only matter if Stu really cared about the school and if his family did not care about Stus education.

Catherine

"I know what I’ve suggested and who I’ve suggested it to." I love this sentence. It just encapsulates Aldens understanding of who Stu is and who they both want to be in a way that very few others do

I genuinely don't know if this is meant to read as a romantic confession, but damn does it read like a romantic confession. Probably would have read as Less intimate if they were just talking about doing the dirty with each other, hah!

Bob Smith

I'm pretty sure that the pair spell casting we just got was equally, if not more so, intimate when compared to sex. If you omit a few words from the scene in this chapter and show it to someone not familiar with the story, they'd think there was a steamy sex scene in this chapter. Now considering all the group spell casting and authority hugs and pats that go on in Wizard life, is it really a surprise that having a regular Tuesday orgy with your friend group is entirely normal?

Doodlyboy15

I'm SO glad Stu seems to have figured enough of it out to know the source is not the specific cause, and he's on the war path for Alden!

Riverism

AAAAAAAHHH oh my god oh my god this is AWESOME but we NEED to feed Ro-Den to a tree

hmmm

Not for Alden... probably not for Stu? And I only say probably because we don't really have a clue how their alien polyamory works.
