This was the 3rd in a series of "Chevy Chase Vacation". movies. All are funny and worth watching. You should definitely watch the first movie "Vacation". This one is a Christmas classic in the U.S. Eddie and Kathryn are in all the movies. Eddie's wife is Clark's wife's cousin. They are only related by marriage to Clark. National Lampoon was a comedy magazine that expanded into movies and books, tv. I think it went out of business in the 90's. The next door neighbor (the woman) was in the Jerry Seinfeld show -- she played Elaine in the Jerry Seinfeld show.

Besides it being a continuation of the "Vacation" franchise of movies, many children in America have a couple weeks off from school around the Christmas and New Year's holidays. So many kids refer to that period as their "Christmas Vacation" even if they're not traveling anywhere. Many adults also of course take time off as well so the entire family can be home together on a vacation of sorts.

This movie was written by John Hughes, who directed Planes Trains and Automobiles. He was responsible for some of the ‘80s biggest comedies. Also, the actor who plays Russ played Leonard in The Big Bang Theory and Clark’s boss is Bill Murray’s brother.

I actually had seen this one as a kid and didn't see the others till later on, and thought it was stand alone for dozens of years. This one is my favorite of them all. The song you were thinking of was "You can call me Al" by Paul Simon. LOVE that music video. Can't tell if were singing Al or Out though on my speakers. :) I had never really even thought about the fact that it's Christmas vacation and they don't go on any vacation because that's just what we call it here between Christmas and new years when the kids are off school and whatnot. I take that time off every year too. Even if you don't go anywhere, it's Christmas vacation. Versus like a vacation or a European vacation - those I would assume you were going somewhere. This is definitely what I'd consider one of the American staples of holiday movies - we watch it every year and it never gets old.

The Christmas movie they were watching on TV that said, "Everytime a bell rings, an angel gets his wings," is 'It's a Wonderful Life' which was my vote on your Christmas poll (its another classic!)

Our family watch this at least once every year during the holidays it's our (and I'm sure many other family's) Christmas tradition. Save the neck for me Clark!
