Basically a lie to help ensure their members don't ignorantly invade the sect's collection of inner realms. They can't be trusted to interact with them so that makes sense. Karmic Dao and Ke Yin's current sect position and past decisions show his trustworthiness with this information and ability to act on it.

Others have commented on the two suns exposition stuff with Lin Mei, but it’s a little bit jarring how the Sect Master has gone from being a big deal to now just chatting with someone who isn’t his disciple or anyone of real note (no shade to Lin Mei). And going fairly deep into talking about karma. We’ve had the elders who haven’t been able to figure out his dao for centuries, and now Lin Mei’s only real interaction with him will have had her listen to him talk about karma with expert knowledge, and then execute a technique based on karma. Feels like a lot of cards being shown to her.
