So Gerling is still out there. I’m guessing he has become an energy ghoul. Trying to get enough mana to transform into an energy vampire.

Pierce

Bah. Undeath again??

Bingus McCready

ZOMBIE GERLING????? Oh, shirt, you shouldn’t have. I mean, you absolutely should have, this is incredible, but still. TFTC!

SomeGuyWhoReads

Edit: “The clan has a better grasp of magic and technology the North did” To “The clan has a better grasp of magic and technology than North did”

Joe Foreman

why is there always cliff hangers? However thank you for the chapter Shirt, and Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Sean Sheldon

Undeath? Oh damn. Someone done messed up!

Flojoe

Tftc, hope Jason gets to free gerlings soul as he still just causes trouble even after being a flesh puppet for nearly twenty years.

Kenneth Mølbæk

So Gerling just moved up the priority list....

Adrian

Prolly more like bodak Gerling, unfortunately. I'm also smelling an affliction war. Ugly, but fun 😅

Kevari

Did these idiots find a way to invite Undeath to Earth? 🤦🏾‍♂️

Laura Hemly

That's the nature of serials, web or on paper. Dickens was doing in the 19th century, after all, just in newspapers! I regard them as an opportunity to develop patience and appreciate delayed. gratification. Not that I've managed either yet!

ItWasIDIO!!

These dumb mothertruckers

Justin Butler

Why didn't Jason eat his Sins?

Hell 5pawn

The rise of undeath on earth is not a good sign.

ByLAWphoto

I'm all about bringing on local gods, but does Earth have enough magical density at this point? I mean, wasn't that the reason Earth didn't have them before?

CaptainFlowers

So obviously love the series and I wouldn't be here if I didn't, but the first half here just felt ... info dumpy. It feels wasted, as we've gone of North and his history multiple times now. Obviously a refresher is needed sometimes but, yeah lol. Loved the second half, and the hint Undeath may be involved is nice!

Joanna

Mmm, blood clone to energy ghoul seems like a big leap. I’m guessing he’s some kind of blood-based plague monster we’ve never seen before

Fuzzy Wuzzy

Ohhh.. undeath fucked up..

Nematrec

Probably working with that necromancer guy that was already here.

Joanna

Good question. Having Neil examine him first just makes sense, but the problem does sound like one Jason’s perfectly suited to fix. Maybe he’s getting a little too into the “hands off” attitude?

Justin Butler

That's what I'm thinking. Originally as soon as Neil said what it was Jason wouldn't have hesitated they'd have been taken care of.

FlareNight

Nigel knows what death feels like too. Seems far more likely that Undeath is capitalized for being at the beginning of the sentence than because it's a reference to a god.

Brave Badger

Good thing Jason’s aura is antipathetic to undeath on a near divine level

Alicia Bolick

While the ending of this chapter was perfect, I think most of the Jason/Anna part was unnecessary long winded and could be cut down quite a bit.

Soli116

Hey @Laura, just imagine me giving you like 30 ❤️s for that, ok?

Oddrey

Tyftc

Jeff

I kinda miss Mr. North. Fun villain

Monty

Ohh great now he is undead...

Caleb

If undeath is the first god to manifest on earth that will be bad.

BloodStorm

Can we get an apocalyptic merging of Earth & Pallimustus? That would be an amazing start to a new post series of HWFWM. With Jason also being a diamond rank that travels the multiverse

curtis gatley

"Goddammit, what are you doing here, Steve?"

DasGoat622

It doesn’t necessarily have to be a god. The power can exist before the mandate/authority is given. Doesn’t make Jason any less effective against it, just because he’s not fighting a Divine Avatar.

Phallusar

Everything about Anna is long-winded. She's the author tract, which makes for a poorly developed and one dimensional character. She recently got better, but is quickly backsliding.

Thomas Froehling

Hmmm, makes me wonder: if Nigel suffers from afflictions similar to the ones Jason spreads, why doesn't he soak them up with his sin eater spell (forgot the name, Feed me your sins)? Would be less mana consuming than Neil just filling up his health...

T-Dawg 2099

Looks like we're getting that rematch with Gerling after all. Also, "I know your nonsense" would make a great chapter title.

Jordan Rogers

It’s an interesting thought, but unlikely the cause, they had human remains turned into zombies already due to the necromancer

Will

Jack Gerling + augmented whatever he got into = Baby god Undeath?

Mike Zebill

Jason talking about Earth and Pali being closer and not wanting Earth to become just conquered land makes me wonder if Killian Lorent will show up on Earth. Kinda like Wormtail in the Shire.

Malcolm Gray

Speaking of energy vampires I wonder if we r ever gonna run into Thadwick again

Chad .

Maybe Steve decided cardio wasn't enough and hit the Roids. I wonder if shirt ever reads these comments. Picks some good ones to use in the final version.

Jacob Kraus

He was a fun villain, very "Bond villain/ anti-hero" esque You're supposed to hate him, but you can't help but like the guy

AfroMocha

For sure he is the leader of the merger vampires that have been making those weapons that can kill a guesttalt being

Jason Hardman

What a shame for nascent undeath that there's a godlike being with explicitly anti-undeath powers hanging around on Earth.

Joshua Little

Thanks for the chapter.

Will

I’m guessing yes. That sword was designed to attack gestalt entities, and was locked away for a reason. I bet it’s one of the few things that can threaten something like an Astral King.

John Durrett

My internal responses are complicated with regard to Anna. She complains about manipulation, yet has had a career in the Network where information is compartmentalized on a Need to Know. Jason is her employer and is giving her information on a need to know basis. Its how all organization work and their all run by individuals who operate on a need to know.

John Durrett

While it may be a nascent God - Gerling himself or otherwise; the very CONCEPT of undeath could act as a seed to a God taking root on Earth.

FlareNight

My point was that the concept of death had been there earlier. The notion that it was hinting at the god of Undeath wasn't actually based in anything. Earth doesn't have enough magic for diamond rank. Transcendent is above that. And it's obviously required for gods, according to what we've seen. The concept of undeath showing up is only an issue because of Jason's deal with Death and the idea that it might spread.

Kristy Riedel

Jason should do that, we know he can eat affliction from others. He did so in the battle of Yaresh. It leaves behind the transcendent damage, which he can then remove with hegemon's will.

Kristy Riedel

He was killed in the transformation zone, but maybe Todd the necromancer will ride again.

James Rosado

I look forward to seeing Jason show off his powers against undeath

Derrick Snyder

Would have liked to see the actual fight between gerling and nigel. There's been alot of talking lately :) And although Anna isn't annoying here, I do think it's lore dumpy. Love the Neil interaction though!! Tyftc!!

Rando Calrissian

The ally version doesn't leave behind transendant afflictions, but his spell isn't the most comforting sounding for the recipient

Laura Hemly

Although I know other people have mentioned a number of typos that need fixing, I just remembered the one I caught that I'm not sure anyone else did. When Neil is looking at Nigel, he talks about dumping "huge amounts of magic to heal though it." Should be *through* it, I do believe.

Laura Hemly

Again? Didn't he do enough for you in the Brightheart territory? I'd be happy to never see undead again after that whole mess! (Although I did find the idiot Jeff to be a welcome addition to the list of Shade's memorable side characters!)

Laura Hemly

Killian Laurent would be an excellent evil opponent again. He has that total nastiness that you don't see in even the other evil characters, most of whom have a couple of redeeming features. Laurent doesn't have *any*! Although I'm not sure Earth needs a baddie quite as bad as he is for a while yet ...

James Rosado

I look forward to Jason showing earth that he is incapable of accepting another makassar....

Laura Hemly

If Earth doesn't have enough magic to even support diamond rankers, I don't see any gods being revealed until long after Gerling has finally gone off to visit Shade's dad!

Laura Hemly

Sometimes the best way to get the less exciting info out to the readers is by info dumping. At least Shirt keeps it remarkably brief and always pertinent to the story, unlike an author or two I won't name here.

Laura Hemly

I think Jason let Neil handle it because it shows the Earth healers just how much more they have to learn, and because Neil is perfectly capable of fixing Nigel on his own. It's another instance of letting Earthers see just how much they *don't* know about magic in almost any form.

Tartlet

People really need to stop coming after Jason in fancy expensive ships…

AfroMocha

With the ancient script that's on the sword and Jason daggers I'm assuming either the messengers made it to kill off the Orignals or the Orignals created it to kill their messenger astral kings that went out of line. My guess as to why it was sealed away would be it prevents death somehow. the gestalt beings killed with it dont end up with the reaper but get trapped someplace kinda like Dragnipur from the Malazan Series. That would be cool. My understanding of the sword is that it eat energy, doing so seperates the gestalt spiritual and physical bodies.

Bryan Jackson

Nah, it was capitalized because it was the beginning of the sentence. That's one of the rules too, if you recall.

Bryan Jackson

Jason didn't eat his sins because he can't. Bleeding is a "Wounding" condition; Feast of Absolution only removes Curses, Diseases, Poisons, and Unholy afflictions.

Bryan Jackson

Bleeding is a "Wounding" condition. Feast of Absolution only removes Curses, Diseases, Poisons, and Unholy afflictions.

Bryan Jackson

They've been explicitly described as different from undeath in this universe. While they are dead, the life energy they steal makes them close enough to true life that they don't count as undead

Morgan Smidt

Yeah, the ghost fire has been a bit underused methinks. Also, who doesn’t love a good ol’ zombie culling.

Morgan Smidt

Was gonna correct your vocab choice, then I learned a new word (or a correct word anyways). Thanks!

Morgan Smidt

Agreed (with Laura). Also, I doubt that was alluding to the god Undeath (disagree with C. Flowers).

Morgan Smidt

What do you mean ‘rise of Undeath’? It’s just Gerling… he’s been undead for a long time now.

Morgan Smidt

Pretty sure he has another way to remove wounding effects too. Don’t remember specifically what method that is though.

Jeff

More or less dropped a nuke on him iirc

Issei Hyoudou

Its basically his job to right the wrongs of undeath with his dealings with the goddess death

Issei Hyoudou

It doesn't consume the energy it changes its form so the energy vamps can consume it. I think you need to reread when it gets used on the messengers. its explained during that encounter as best as we will probably get

Jessica Olson

Yeah for some people it might have been years since they last read in detail about North.

Jessica Olson

Not to mention all the vampires. Literally the Earth is swarming with undeath energy right now. Still not powerful enough to support Pali style gods though.

Jessica Olson

I think 1) the bleeding wouldn't have been eaten i think? And also Neil needs opportunities to use his skills to advance them as well.

RonGAR

Well thank god Jason has those flames then. Yeahhhh... Jason Vs Gerling Part 2. Nice. Looking forward to it. Hope this is not another hyped-up fight like the 23 Pirates, where we think Jason is about to hold his own then gets the crap kicked out of him and had to have his team save him. If it was not for the author changing everyone's opinion to make Jason look like a badass, I would've saw that as the worst Re-Intro of a MC and display as 'The most powerful gold ranker'. Bro got stomped! Point blank Period! ---------- Hmmm I like that he wants Earth to catch up to Pallimustis, buuttttt just because he could, the real question is, SHOULD YOU?! You want to give them MORE power without doing anything about the current ETHICS, MORALS, and political betrayals, that constantly put them against you, and you find yourself distaining. How does that make sense? How? -------- As for the ship... can't he just feed it to his cloud flask and let it work out all the functions? When that ship becomes part of the cloud, doesn't that give Jason an intrinsic understanding of the ship and its functions?

Cromegas_Flare

Well, taking care of undeath is kinda Jason's thing.

Kconraw

Thx for the chapter

Shadow

Might be too overdone, but I’m hoping for Jason to be way better than Gerling in the fight, and have the battle be more emotional and Gerling playing tricks as a kind of role reversal. As for Earth catching up to Pallimustus, I think the focus for now is the worry of colonization. If Earth is taken over, it doesn’t matter. Imagine going back to turn the Aztecs into a utopia only to watch them be massacred. There isn’t time to do this in steps. The Earthlings need to learn ethics and military at the same time. But you are totally right. This will probably go wrong.

StarkRG

It'd be pretty funny if their astral vessel was just a cardboard box with the words "interdimensional pirate ship" written on the side in purple marker.

Tartlet

I mean, I’m just saying if you’re gonna try to go after Jason, do it in a Yugo, not a Porsche.

Shadow

Bronze Rank member here. Is this a week with no updates? I'm pretty sure there wasn't a Monday update

Havics Child

Shirtaloon is taking a bit of time off, he will be back mid April. As bronze you should still be able to read his notification I think. He's currently sick enough doc sent him to a hospital instead of letting him fly back home after a vacation.

Opossums Coat

Ngl it’s such a treat to see Neil in action, I know it’s just at the end here but still. Everything about Neil is imo what it means to be a combat medic. The perfect mix of need to do good, and drive to be in the mix of people fucking shit up.
