Hey guys,
At long last, I'm delighted to finally share with you the trailer for the upcoming earthquake documentary we've been painstakingly working on these last few months!

Filming mostly took place in August and September and since then the team have been editing the episode and doing lots of the more mundane aspects of production, such as clearing footage.

And at long last, we're just a week away from the launch of the documentary.
🍿 Watch: https://youtu.be/1pPl_KwXvOw

The documentary is about 36 minutes long and takes us across the country from a rural destroyed town in the opening days of 2024, to the heart of Tokyo to find answers as to how likely a mega earthquake is and what kind of devastating affect it would have.

As a Patreon backed project, thank you to everyone who made this possible. It simply wouldn't have been possible without your support - it was the most expensive single video we're produced in 12 years and having seen the finished documentary, it's one I'm very proud to have been a part of.

Before then however, we have the launch of the 21 Days in Japan video out tomorrow! A huge sequel to last year's 14 Days in Japan episode, and in case you missed it, we did have a somewhat more sombre video out yesterday about my thoughts on certain individuals.

- I won't dwell on it here, but thanks for all the kind words I received.

For now guys, enjoy the trailer and please have yourselves a wonderful Saturday!
Best,

Chris

Very excited about the upcoming videos and I think it's great that you're shedding light on very important issues!

Tom Principato

This looks like it'll be top notch. Happy to support content like this.

Kitsunelaine

This will be really relevant to me in New Zealand too, as the Alpine Fault is predicted to go in the not too distant future which will be particularly catastrophic. (further reading on this; https://www.newsroom.co.nz/coming-ready-or-not ) Also, can I just say: The colour grading in this is damn good.

Jaziem

I can't wait to see this Chris. Just from the trailer alone we can see what has already been put into this doc production wise.

Stefan

This looks BBC Documentary level and I'm all for it!

Kevin Cromarty

Looks great Chris - and this is just the trailer! I’m a Brit expat in Outer Sunset in SF and got a tsunami warning after a 7.0 quake last week. I immediately thought of the footage after the Tohoku earthquake, hopped in the car and drove to the nearest hill. Which turned out to be part of the San Andreas fault, so probably not the best place. It’ll be interesting to see how Japan prepares and hopefully others will learn from it. Cheers and have a good weekend!

Luke Beaman

Lovely stuff, big fan of your documentaries, looking forward to it!

BRAKEL3SS

This trailer looks genuinely insane Chris! I'm looking forward to the full release

Acrosicious

Yesss, really looking forward to it! Just came back again from Tokyo. I'm really interested on how the locals cope with this looming dread.. Its always one of the major unknowns when visiting the country for me.

Acrosicious

I saw the damages still visible in Christchurch a year ago. I hope they are more prepared now than they were then. Here's hoping my accommodation next next is earthquake proof 😅

Luciano Arrieta Martins

I’m so proud to be part of this community and to be able to help you in these projects Chris, even if it is only a little bit. Can’t wait for it and I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. just watched the preview and I KNOW it’s going to be an incredible piece of work and answer my doubt on how do the japanese people live with the reality of earthquakes. I don’t live in Japan but it was always in the back of my head the two times I was there and sincerely I do not know how you people living there deal with it. To me it is trully a source of admiration and respect towards the people of Japan. The reality of their lives is what is is but it is as real as the determination to get up everytime the very earth tears them down.

Krispi

Looking forward to seeing it even though I'm pretty sure it's gonna make me cry. I'm so proud of you, Chris. You are truly a brilliant and talented filmmaker. P.S. Pet the kitties for me!

This looks fantastic Chris! Being in the UK, seeing how devastating nature can be makes me feel thankful to live in a place where (largely) this sort of thing doesn’t happen. I know how long this has taken to make and how passionate you are about it, can’t wait for the full length to drop 😁

Ilyas

jppiov

That looks really great, Chris. I was working in Japan about 30 years ago and there was a SMALL earthquake in the middle of one night. It scared the crap out of me.

Norma Vela

I will never forget the Northridge earthquake back in 1994 (6.7 magnitude) which only lasted about 15-20 seconds for us but wrecked my house - I can't imagine. This will be both fascinating and maybe a little triggering to watch. People don't usually realize that the difference between a 5 magnitude and a 7 isn't just two steps larger; it's 100 times larger, with each step being 10 times the previous one. Entire freeway overpasses fell in our area and the aftershocks lasted the rest of the day.

Gina Wilkolak

I absolutely love your documentaries. Very much looking forward to this!

Lauren Merchant

Trailer gave me chills. I cannot wait for the full release. Thank everyone who worked on it for us!

John Leitch

Rynnik Elddi

The trailer is absolutely amazing. Probably the most excited I've ever had for an upcoming AiJ video.

weepingsheep

The scene where you are at those massive pillars looked incredible!

garrett1433

Will there be a patreon deleted scenes for the 21 day trip vid? And can't wait for the documentary!

Justin sells

I continue to be inspired and impressed by your ability to use your platform for good. The production on this project is next level. keep it up :)

Eric [UK]

Ooh, has someone been watching Video Copilot? All looks amazing and I do like that title sequence. Andrew Kramer is a badass. Must've been watching his stuff well over 15 years ago, damn, I'm old 😂 I thought I recognised the After Effects curve i.e. the camera 'swoosh' in that basement, I thought it was CGI, but actually, was that real footage with a drone? I'm intrigued as to why it was so smokey/ foggy!

Eric [UK]

After re-watching I think that is CGI (Ae or UE) because of the green screen edges, not a problem at all, it's seriously really well done, better than some B-tier films! Plus, I realised they might not let you film down there 😅 But the scale looks massive, it's amazingly represented! Can't wait to see the whole thing.

Seek83

such a great trailer and then the stupid AI Dubbing Effs up the first few seconds. to bad you can't deactivate it permenantly on the users Side.

FarTinBaNaNas
