Monday Chapters
51, 52, 53, 54 and 55

(Edited: Accidentally called this Legacies instead of Legions.)

Good morning!

It's Monday, so it's time for Chapters. I was working on these for the last few days, and hope you enjoy them. Love seeing the messages and discussion over on Discord, and all the great comments.

Someone asked about the eventual tiers and what they'll look like on Patreon. Pricing wont change for existing members, but there will be a new Tier system with benefits. I just want to ensure they are actually benefits and not something useless that makes a lot more work for me.

Anyways, let me know what you guys think. :)

Brian

Thank you for the chapters Brian

Pickled Rick

Just got into work so I don't think my boss will appreciate the cheeky reading break but if today is too stressful I might just need a little mental health break.😉 Thanks for the chapters

Manpolar

Wow this is easy. Thank you very much

A.J. Polanowski

Here I was, just about to go to sleep but now I have new chapters to read! Thank you for the chapters good Brian!

wendy woolley

My best days are now Mondays but ohhhhhhh having to wait so long to see their reaction to Jackel

Max

Question for chapter 51, page 1, last paragraph When did Sal’s goal change from creating a guild for supports to a guild that could attract the best heroes from all fields? Or did I misunderstood his intentions all the time.

Mike

Aghhh that cliff hanger made me fall so hard! ❤️ Thanks for another amazing chapter! Can’t wait for the grand reveal of Jackal

Kiwi

Oh, I think I’m seeing where the title for the book is coming from.

Michael WIlson

So, I was really hoping for the chapters for when I woke up. I suppose it's a good thing I decided I wasn't going to sleep last night. I got to start reading shortly after they came out. I will say this Brian. You do one helluva job making me want to read all the chapters. In the last two months I've read every book twice, including the chapters for 5.

Kiwi

I’m not usually upset by Brian’s weekly cliff hangers cause I know the book as a whole they won’t be there……. But this week has me craving more, Brian of all places to leave us hanging…… you dungeon tease 😜 .

Max

Chapter 54 and chapter 55 When they talked about he cape I had to think about Edna from the incredibles. “No capes!”

Max

Hi Brian   Suggestion for when to end Chapter 53 I believe it would make more sense to end chapter 53 on page six after this line. "First, you're going to need this." Upgrade smiled as she handed him a ridiculously detailed eye-patch.   I think, thematically, it would make more sense for chapter 54 if it had all the handling of equipment for the set in it. It still gives you a good point to end chapter 53 and entices the reader to continue and "read just one more chapter."

Max

Hi Brian   This is not meant as a way to plead to get the appraisal earlier. I will get it in a few weeks and that doesn't bother me and I know that I will just skip ahead in the story when I have the book. But it interests me. Can you maybe elaborate on your writing decisions and how you determine when you show the readers the appraisal tables?   I would think that it makes more sense for the character if Sal appraises the eye patch and the hat before he wears it. I know that it builds suspense for the reveal in 2-3 chapters. I can see how that would be a good move/strategy for the release via Patreon because you hook the reader to return next week. But will it also make sense in book form?

The Foolish One

Is Sal becoming Solid Snake? 😉

Cedric 'Driky' Chatelain

Starting the week with 5 chapters is awesome. Ending 5 chapters without Jackal shredding demons, not awesome. I’m a little sad that the weapons are not fully manifested anymore, that was pretty rad. But I guess when you have your own personal tempest generator that’s just a detail.

Jeremiah

Great chapters Brian!! I hoping someone can direct me to the link to the discord group?

Barbara Collier

Okay........ 1. Please commission a drawing of Sal in the Marshal Set. 2. This so unfair. Give the loyal followers the dungeon run chapters this week. We want to see Jackal. 3. You rock!!!

Abdulmohsen

Whatever happened to all the presents that Sal made to give to his friends? He only gave Upgrade her present and we're more than halfway through book 5 judging by the number of chapters already posted!

Dawn Zeleznik

Great chapters. I kept picturing Sal’s jacket and hat like something from WWII. Everything is always a little steampunk so that’s why that era came to mind.

Justin

There is a image that Brian put up in Patron Spoilers in Discord.

Ali Sha

Thank you for the chapters! That dungeon tease is killing me though. I can’t wait for the gangs reaction to not only Jackal but the first time Sal goes all close combat with a demon.

Rielgesh

Tftcs! Loved the chaps! Small question/suggestion. End of chapter 55, no one refers to Jackal by name except in internal monologues, yet Barry asks who Jackal is instead of "he"? Maybe change Fabi's "he" to "Jackal" or Barry's "Jackal" to "he"?

Frilas

The chapters were a great read but also a reminder of why I keep trying to stop reading. First thing: please don’t make this the book cover. The only thing that comes to mind is another back view of Sal, and personally, I’d rather not have Sal on the cover at all than a back view for the third time. The gear sounds amazing, but with Sal’s tendency to give away his crafts, his big gear set not having a single item that is purely his is annoying—especially when now, depending on the count, 3–6 parts are made by others. So, no more mythic in the soon-to-be divine-crafter’s set. The refusal to appraise anything aside from the Tempest Marshal—I can’t find the words to describe that issue. It’s SD all over again. Finally, the TM is a completely new item crafted from scratch (not a rework) that doesn’t have a single one of SD’s abilities. All the abilities it has are part of Dominion-summoned items, which are not essence signatures of SD’s body suite. The items are great, and they show how amazing the others are without Sal, but they are also the people who should understand the most that what they’re making here is a joke compared to what they could be making if they had just involved Sal in the blueprint creation stage—not to mention going from ordering a mask and reworking SD to doing everything but that.

Frilas

I already regret commenting again, and it’s going to bother me the whole week like always, but I just have trouble understanding why all the teasers earlier in the story are there only for the end result to once again not include any of that.

Robert Crews

Well I gotta say it has taken forever to get everyone together and then it stops. I can't wait until next week! Man he needs a shirt and his guns though

David

Especially for someone training in close quarters combat like the family’s style.

Frilas

I'm interested in that as well, as we saw in Book 4 that doing the dungeon run before doing the appraisal is a rare occasion where nearly everybody had a big issue with it, and reader opinion aside, it contradicts the concept of Sal learning from past mistakes like the Strategist's Dominion test run.

Erik Van Norstrand

I love the reference to Divine Apostacy by AFK 😄

Ron Blondeau

Amazing chapters Brian. My question is, how do you keep track of all the functions and skills? Do you use a logic tree and flow chart?

Semper Malus

Can't help but feel like these chapters were a big middle finger to your readers. Just a big show and tell with no show. Kind of makes this serious massive war with demons seem not that serious at all. Like the last book with the archwright there's nothing happening that makes this story feel like it's progressing much.

Rion Smith

So far Sal has almost pissed himself at the thought of running a dungeon. I'm really happy to see some character growth there. I know most will disagree with me on this, but I despise the aesthetics you seem to be going for with the new armor designs. I understand how a lot of people could find it really cool, but it brings to mind a kid history nerd playing dress up. I really miss trench coat revolver Sal. I love time jump and seeing how things are snowballing without Sal there but because of his previous actions.

Abdulmohsen

Why making the Darwin cruise ships fly was so outlandish to Sal? Before the excursion in book 2 a guild came to pick up the students they were mentoring in a aircraft carrier that flew. Surly a cruise ship would be easier to make fly?

Dennis Biancanello

I can understand those who hate cliffhangers that mean a week of waiting to find out but id rather wait a week than wait a year for publication lol. I am wondering though if i missed a section on the argentos silversons connection reveal. From a work perspective if it stays with the reader and they are wondering afterward something is being done right i'd argue. You cant go down every path and sometimes leads as it were are left for growth later but i kind of think i had to miss a chapter somehow.

William Howe

"I was going to message you to come into us,…”. Chapter 52 Don’t know what she was trying to say here.

Dennis Özel

I just want more to read haha i read all the books 4 times now just love it to much to stop. And kinda wish the story speed up some parts i do love the details and all but the story is moving fast on some parts but super slow time wise if that makes since

crewband1701

Was going back through saviors and Sal was talking to Alex. Said “Don’t take Kaizen until you’ve finished the basics. Kaizen splinters your gates into smaller ones to increase your capacity, and it’ll hurt like a bitch and fuck your insides if you use it.”“Don’t take Kaizen until you’ve finished the basics. Kaizen splinters your gates into smaller ones to increase your capacity, and it’ll hurt like a bitch and fuck your insides if you use it.” might need to good back in book 4 to change Sal's gate count to something in the 500 range when he takes kaizen after the trip with Fabi to the dungeon. Sal took the full dose. With him having the perfect weave going at that time it should have attest doubled or quadrupled his gates 🤔

Pickled Rick

#Edit Suggestions Chapter 52 "I haven't seen her properly in since I got out of the infirmary." - you can drop in from this sentence. Felt like you were going to say "in forever" then changed your mind. "I was going to message you to come into us, or just knock on your door..." - sounds unintentionally sexual. Maybe replace "into" with "join".

TheWorldbearer

I agree! I stopped reading for a few weeks hoping to come back to some Jackal action and we still haven’t gotten to the dungeon yet. The struggle of not waiting till the full book is out

BrianJNordon

A painful process of trying to remember whatever chapter I referenced the functions before. I tend to just rely on my memory and then rely on my Discord to correct me when I screw up. :)

BrianJNordon

Sorry you feel this way. I'm just writing the story I want to read, and hoping for the best. I totally appreciate that it might not be to your tastes, and that the pacing is off. I felt that each of these chapters were necessary. I could be wrong, but this is just how I write.

BrianJNordon

Hopefully we'll get a cover art version that does the depiction more justice. I personally love it, but I'm biased because I see it clearly in my head.

BrianJNordon

Those described aircraft were transporting maybe a few hundred people. Cruises are transporting over 5,000 people. I think my error was calling them carriers, where really they were just large transports for the Guilds to navigate through Red Zones.

Zwil

should it not say legions? instead of legacies? not sure if someone already pointed that out. thanks for the great chapters this week!

BrianJNordon

Prestige split Sal's gates for him. Kaizen was used to accelerate the activation of the new gates. There is diminishing returns as you activate more gates, making it harder to reach the higher numbers. That was established in Book 1 in the Skills Class. Chapter 51 or 52 I think.

Justin

I love the chapters and the buildup, the reunions, the teasing, the surprises and of course the damn cliffhanger lol. I can't wait to see if Marshal will live up to the expectations we have in regards to functionality, can't wait to see Upgrade and Fabil lose their shit over Jackal especially when he's done cooking. Brian thank you soooo much for your writing it never fails to make my Mondays better!

Justin

Unless you miss that Monday, then I hate you until the next release lol!

Madisyn

So are you going to add the option to put a character named after us in the book?

Tanstaafl

Glad to see that Villa is keeping involved. I question the occassional reference by Sal to an implant for himself. With his ability why would he bother or limit his options?

daGrimm

Is it just me, or is Sal now looking like Raul Julia's M. Bison?

David

I was picturing M. Bison too! Have you seen the Pete Holmes skits about organizing the street fighter tournament? The Bison one is pretty funny.

T W

I'm getting very confused on the capabilities of everyone at the moment, in the earlier books, Doc is a big deal with a request list years long because he can craft legendary gear and in doing so it takes a long time, and is the only / one of the only legendary crafting crafters in existence.. this made Sal an even bigger deal because he could craft Mythic But so far, we've seen Fabi, Blathnaid, Ugrade all craft legendary.. so is it a big deal or isn't it? To further on this.. why would Divinity in earlier chapters be asking about the mask, when this set involves no mask? I'd say that yes future can change etc But for the most part, I really just dont understand why sal is never included in any of the crafting.. already here he just found out in his class not hours before the interactions in these chapters he needs to get a uniform happening, only for the following chapters to hand wave that away because it's already done with 0 input from sal, the elixir machine which started the original scope of essentially being a coffee machine of types ended up being an industrial factory that sal has no idea what it does, when he built it? feels like everything sal has done, is going to do, or should/need do is being passed off to everyone else and we're just seeing it as a teaser into reveal 20 chapters later, and its a rollercoaster that needs to chill a bit

JoeO

Great chapters! This is your world and I’m just living in it. I do hope we’ll find out more on the following Skill for Machines - hoping that’s included with the Quest/Coach project Presents from Sanctuary - we only read about Upgrade’s…were the other gift given “off camera” Bobby, Doc Bob’s son - not sure how a building full of animals or tamers could be tied in right now, but was that just a throw away? If they beat the demons, do they ruin the economy?

Pickled Rick

I feel like the finished uniform 100% needs to be featured on the cover of this book with either Jackal hovering over Sal and/or members of the myth guild standing with him in the cliche superhero lineup.

Lisa Johnson

So good. I thought you were giving us a chapter in the dungeon. And you did but … cliffhanger. Good cliffhanger. Connecting the uniform to the converter… with sticky tape? That he can’t do himself seems like a fail point. Can’t he just activate the connection? With his voice?

Lisa Johnson

I have a feeling they are going to clear a lot of dungeons. Only Divinity has witnessed Sal’s marshal arts. Add the suit and they’ll clear the dungeons fast.

Pickled Rick

Question of clarification Brian. Is Petro still hiding his martial prowess from people at Quest Academy except Divinity? Practically speaking it seems it would be easier for Petro to go through the Silverson moves to identify the best places for joints vs protection on Sal's uniform considering the flexibility requirements for those arts or is Petro's skill just that good that he knows exactly where the fabric and protection was located on his uniform and can adjust for his son's dimensions.

Kurby

HOVERBOARD HOVERBOARD HOVERBOARD HOVERBOARD HOVERBOARD HOVERBOARD! When Sal makes the legs he needs to make the shoes either transform into or summon a hover board. Whether he uses it to visit his family or fly around during scavenger and portal runs. Being able to fly is a must. Also that superspeed ability from book 1 but most importantly a hover board must be a priority!

John Duncan

Grrrrrrrrrr, was hoping for the dungeon run this round. Love the book so far!

Deko

Cancelling Ethical Crafting for a personal crafting related issue... Upgrade is diving head first into the hypocri-sea.

Bennett Street

I know right all i could imagine was like a command strip being applied. Also since it is connected how does arsenal work can he send the whole jacket now.

Bennett Street

I agree we have been waiting for this damm dungeon ru. For like 50 chapters and I am not a fan of the I hurt so I need to spend a month in the infirmary when there is magical healing

Koral

The book is great, but so many teases is getting wearisome.

Daniel Crouch

I think if this was an animated series we'd see a ghostly light outlining of the weapon used around his hand. That's how I imagine it... think it will still look pretty bad-ass. Just more general leading from the front than lone gun slinger.

Jeremy

So next week will be the battle oriented chapters 😁?!🤞

Greg Cottingham

I deliberately waited a few days before I read, trying to avoid the instant withdrawal symptoms of needing the next chapter. Damn you Nordon, purveyor of literary crack.

nin10do

I’ve been listening to all the books though audible and read aloud software and all though all the books are great my favourite book so far is book four due to the very detailed build of Arkwright and also the Jackle project which will be coming something truly a masterpiece of engineering, Brian world building is different to most authors I have read that normally in the book have the books end at the year, I love the fact that we have a fix of quest academy every single week I am always happy when new chapters are released.

Dr. Chaos

“Zero.” “None.” “Fuck no!” It’s been 4 days and I’m still laughing about that… I love precisely placed humor in a dramatic story. The writers of Stargate SG1 called it “Dramedy”,

Jim Swift

This week I read all the chapters in Book 5 (again!) But this time, Upgrade's first meeting with Sal after the infirmary stood out as a bit odd. The meeting was at the Mythic Guild launch – Upgrades greeting was very casual with no mention of Sal's eye issues. It was a bit of a contrast to her enthusiastic greeting when Sal first saw what Upgrade and Fabi had been working on. It will be interesting to see how this comes out of the pre-publication edits :-) Re-reading all the chapters each week is a fun way to meet the new chapters. Thanks again Brian, this series has risen to the top of my all-time favourites.

Sam

If he had, say Perfect, as an implant, then he could more easily use it with other weaves that he "borrows". As it is, he struggles with holding multiple weaves active at the same time and I'm not sure that he can use two weaves that aren't his at the same time.

Robert Crews

He needs pants for his uniform

ts25679

I must be imagining Sal's new uniform wrong, because it sounds like it look kinda lame. Hopefully the cover art will correct that impression.

Brett 'Swantz' Swanson

Chapter 51, end of page 4: "list of of" only needs 1 "of."

Brett 'Swantz' Swanson

Chapter 52, page 1, end: "properly in since" doesn't need the "in."

Brett 'Swantz' Swanson

Chapter 52, page 2, end: "so really super rare" should probably have "it's" included.
