OOOOOOH I'm going to watch this immediately - was waiting for it to drop!

Ryan

As it happens, I still haven't gotten any further in the show so these are my total unspoiled thoughts. The premiere got me on board in its second half, but this episode mostly got me right back to the same boredom I had in the first half. Cool as it is to see Gi-hun and Jun-ho finally team up, and that he's turned a whole hotel floor into a bunker that Bobby Singer would be proud of, this all ends up feeling like a development they had to get through, but also couldn't squeeze into another episode where more was happening, so it's just thrown out on its own without nearly enough to justify spending all this time on it (especially when we only have seven episodes, which I'll keep harping on as long as it's relevant). And the reveal of In-ho in the front seat got a quite inappropriate laugh from me for its sheer pointlessness, up there with Ghost Protocol's "the henchman was actually the main villain." About the only part of this story I fully got on board with was the reveal that he's seeing to the wishes of his old gamemates, which I was expecting would just never be referenced again. Luckily, we also have the introduction of No-eul, an instantly engaging new major character who's built as a total hourglass opposite to Sae-byeok without it feeling forced at all. It helps that she has what I've always kind of pictured as your day job, and the shot of everyone snapping back into character was both really funny and oddly moving after they'd all just been complaining about it. The final reveal that she's a guard more than made up for the lack of surprise elsewhere and has me aching to know where her story is going, even if I'm still pretty sure we won't be getting any closure on it until Season 3. For now, her total lack of surprise at being handed the card or seeing the uniform has me thinking she isn't a new hire, and that will probably say some things about "category traitors" who turn on their own for a pat on the head, just like we started to get with the Salesman. And since she's now most of what's keeping me with the show, I'm begging for this to go somewhere good.

Says something how the show has got your heart racing, and no games have been played yet. Sign of a stressful show. Good on the show to immediately follow-up on the ending of the last episode. I like how you expressed concern that Jun-ho would think that Gi-hun killed the Salesman. Setting aside the fact that the matter is resolved quickly, I’d imagine forensics would show Gi-hun wasn’t the killer. Placement of the wound, combined with the lack of residue on Gi-hun’s hands. Again, the matter is resolved quick with help from Woo-seok. Love how they all commit to working together, and Woo-seok rejecting the money. There is worry how Jun-ho keeps mum about his brother; pray to God this doesn’t build toward a bullshit liar revealed thing. Certainly, Jun-ho is keeping the truth from his mom, loved that scene. Gi-hun spent his time getting ready, and stocking up on the armory, which gave us both the “By the power of Grayskull!” response. You handled the business with the tooth better than I did. Pragmatically smart of the people behind the games to have events on Halloween, thus no one bats an eye at people in masks walking about. It is emotional when Gi-hun tried calling his daughter and can’t bring himself to say anything. Good further establishment of the time that has passed, given how his daughter’s accent sounded a touch faded. Quick thing: You asked if Halloween was Gi-hun's birthday. Made me pause, look that up, and only that, and yes, you recall correctly. Good memory, Jess. The not jumpscare that ended up being a jumpscare is a jolt, and I lived for your reaction. The nervousness was felt as there was no way that the Salesman’s suicide went unnoticed. Plus, it’s still far too early in the season for the hunky-dory times. (If any.) Tense when Gi-hun has his talk with the Front Man. I anticipated the bullshit that the Front Man was spewing would rile you up some. The motherfuckers DO have a point about the players enter voluntarily. But to act like one’s hands are clean is where you lose the argument. Just as you sell how full of shit you are when saying the games keep going because the world is horrible. Given the presumed infinite resources that they have, they could make efforts to change things if they really want to. Instead, they keep the games going, whilst the V.I.P.s just get to sit back and enjoy that, whilst living their best Eyes Wide Shut lives. You know, minus the orgy. (So far as we’ve seen thus far, anyway.) I confess that I got distracted by the question of has Gi-hun seen The Matrix, as I expected him to answer, “Why, yes, I’ve seen The Matrix. Trinity and I are old friends as it happens. We’ve been through thick and thin, like the time we buried all evidence connected to our accidental murder of the gay space witches back on Brendok. Good times.” I’m not disagreeable with the blue pill logic of ignorance is bliss, with the nice steak dinners. A sentiment aided by great love for Joey Pants, my brother is the same. Making that analogy, however, proves the villains fundamentally missed the point of the Matrix films. Regardless, Gi-hun is now going back into the game. I refrain from commenting on pondering of how that’s going to go as I don’t even want to accidentally spoil anything. As it is, I have not seen past this episode at this time. Now to the character of No-eul. Interesting seeing her at her job at the park. She and her coworkers, they do exhibit admirable dedication to a job that likely provides little in way of bread. I’d imagine their quick response on putting the costumes back on speaks more to how they know how traumatizing it would be for a kid to see them sans masks. The one guy who fucked up, I’d have smacked the guy up the head on that one. It is great how the show does sprinkle the small breadcrumbs of foreshadowing before the big reveal. Particularly effective was the, what’s called, five second foreshadowing at the end, when she gets into the trucks, which is where the idea started to form, and had just about solidified when we see her bring the pink into frame. Your reaction to that was wonderful. This now brings a new wrinkle to the proceedings. A wrinkle which that also I am not trying to speculate much about at this time for fear of accidentally spoiling shit. I will say that you mention about possibly the father of the little girl being a contestant, the idea sounds plausible and should be interesting if they go down that path, which I do not know if they do or do not. One thing that does seem certain, that you commented on as well, is that there was the tier system with the symbols on the masks, in addition to denoting ranks and jobs. No-eul has the symbol of the triangle indicating one, she is at the rank of soldier, and two, she’s possibly been doing the job for a while. In any event, this reaction was fantastic, Jess, and I await what’s to come. Thank you for the fantastic reaction.

Same here. I’ve only seen the first two episodes. Probably get to the third episode some time tonight. How you speak of sliding back into boredom, the small amount of scuttlebutt that has come my way indicates that it’s not a particularly unpopular thought. I just like how Jess has almost always puts the greater priority on character over plot. Which my own thing of factoring in what type of story something is, thus through that, you determine which to give the greater attention and focus to, plot or character, it meshes well with the approach that Jess has. The laugh you had over In-ho in the front seat, yeah, I guess it does have that Ghost Protocol feel to it. Better than borrowing from Mission Impossible 2. I had the moment of getting pulled out of it with the Matrix reference, so you’re not alone on that. It is nice that Gi-hun remembers his debts to those that died in the games. No-eul does have our attention. That is a good way to describe the scene with the costumes as being “both really funny and oddly moving” given, like you said, they grouse about the costumes, but the second the kid walks in, they all have the “oh, shit” reaction, and snap back into character. The points you mention, combined with the triangle on the mask, suggest she’s been at the job for a while. Probably will tie into the theme of “category traitors”, see how that goes. No worries that you say her plotline’s the thing keeping you with the show You can keep harping on the episode count if you like. The fourth season of True Detective got obscenely shat on all across the internet. Though Jodie Foster has been taking home the major awards, which has been nice to see. My brother and I loved the season as we did the previous seasons, though we note there is the objective issue of it having the six episodes, and it would have helped expand on certain parts had they had the eight episodes like the first three seasons. Incidentally, the Golden Globes made me slightly annoyed that Ripley, particularly Andrew Scott got overlooked. Made the joke to my mom about the awards shows keep thinking that Mr. Ripley is not all that talented. Had to explain the joke some to my mom, specifically I explained about Highsmith’s series, and the adaptations, and how the actors who play Tom seem to be continuously snubbed. She also got puzzled by Shōgun being in the drama category, rather than the miniseries category. She still hasn’t sat down and watched the new one, but she’s seen the old one. I confirmed that it’s in the drama category because of the plans to continue with season two, as I believe you mentioned. I conceded, “I don’t see how, because, well you know the old miniseries.” So, that should be an interesting waiting game of how they’re going to pull that off.

The Halloween thing took a bit of getting used to, since both the players and guards became such popular costumes in real life and seeing one in a bar wouldn't be any kind of big deal. There's also the guy who the salesman was playing with when he was first spotted, and then the show went out of its way to show him calling his pregnant wife who also had a card, so they're definitely going to be in the games because otherwise what was the point of that? I'm sure a bunch of people will have plenty to say about their being willing to put a pregnant woman in the games.

Ryan

I mostly really loved Night Country, but you could feel them fighting the reduced episode count and just straight up dropping some plot points. And I really wish they didn't do the whole "All this show's seasons are actually connected, look at our vague easter eggs!" thing.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, the season was great, just, like you said, they fought the reduced episode count. What we got was well liked by my brother and I, we just note that the extra two episodes at least could have helped flesh out certain areas better. Hear you on the Easter egg thing, though some of those were really vague to the point that my brother didn’t even catch some of them until I pointed them out to him.
