"I could have been stuck in the eighteen-hundreds for ever.", "Did you really believe I'd abandon you?", Peri and the Doctor, "The Mark of the Rani" Awww! "Lord Ravensworth's seen to it that Luke's been well taught. He'll outshine me.", Stephenson, "The Mark of the Rani" Luke has such promise and then he goes and gets turned into a tree! "I'm afraid the Rani simply sees us as walking heaps of chemicals. There's no place for the soul in her scheme of things.", The Doctor, "The Mark of the Rani" This story was written by the husband and wife team of Pip and Jane Baker. And this idea of someone considering people to be just a heap of chemicals was their inspiration for the character of the Rani. "Don't move, Peri! Don't move! The tree won't hurt you!", The Doctor, "The Mark of the Rani" Oh dear, we've dropped into "The Wizard of Oz" with moving trees. The transformation would be totally horrifying if the Luke-tree didn't protect Peri by swinging its bough around her - which just looks so silly. But a high-tech mine is an interesting idea. Someone should write a modern Who story about it. "Oh, stop being sentimental. What's happened? Animal matter has been metamorphosed into vegetable matter. So what?", The Rani, "The Mark of the Rani" Yes, the Rani is an interesting character - cold and ruthless but without the megomania of the Master. I like the way they play off against each other in this story. "And when you do, your invention will take off like a rocket, Stephenson.", "Oh, those puns get worse.", The Doctor and Peri, "The Mark of the Rani" Stephenson's Rocket locomotive was built and demonstrated for a competition in 1829. It is preserved in the UK Science Museum collection. "Betty!", sesskasays, Reaction to "The Mark of the Rani" Going into this part, there was one word I just knew would be part of the reaction!

Some time in the 1980s - I'm guessing it was around '85, shortly after this series - our local library was visited by the legendary VFX designer and modelmaker Mat Irvine, who brought along a selection of props from Who and Blake's 7. I well remember he had the original K9, as well as a couple of the Rani's landmines and a T-Rex embryo in its jar, and an FX rat from the next story. It was a more innocent and naïve time, as he let us kids manhandle them as he talked about his work. They'd be like religious artifacts now.
