An innocent, very special young person trapped in a basement? Being tormented by a self-righteous bitch with a cause? Trapped, alone and cut off from any family that would actually help them? Told they were evil just because they had special abilities? Told they were the devil? I absolutely adore the parallels between Magda and Sam this episode. The way she is living the same things Sam did, the way Sam is able to relate to her, and help her, because he knows exactly what she is going through. His father wanted him to either be saved, or killed, the same way Magda's mother tried to do with her. And Sam, like Magda, once believed the same lies that she has been conditioned to believe- that he was a freak, a monster, evil because of things he couldn't control. And, unlike her, he actually knows the devil. Was made to be the devil. But seeing him now, compared to season 1 or 2, or even 5 Sam, and hearing him tell Magda the truth that he has finally come to believe himself, that she is good, and her powers are just who she is, nothing inherently evil or bad, is both heartwarming, and heartbreaking. Sam trying desperately to save the girl from the same hell he went through, to get her help, and help her make the right choices, just goes to show how far he has come on his own journey of self-acceptance. Add to that, trying to help Dean through his anger, and abandonment issues, while never discounting the feelings, it is just a solid episode for Sammy. And I love that we are getting a realistic portrayal of the complexity of their situation with Mary. It isn't an easy fix, and it isn't going to sort itself out, so seeing the responses to the situation for all of them is really refreshing, when most shows would just skip to the happily ever after part
