Oh, ok. Thanks for the heads up about the reaction to next week’s episode being paired with the finale reaction. You did say that you were planning to take a few days off this month, no problem. Hoping you and your best friend have a lovely time together, Jess. Lot to talk about, this episode. Plenty of character focus as we set-up the last two episodes of the season. Kim has proven a most wonderful addition to this universe. “Absolutely, delightfully psychotic” and “slimy and magnetic” as you put is such a succinct description. We agree on living for Bruegel’s watch knife accessory. A man’s got to have a good watch, even in the apocalypse. One with the fancy knife really is quite nifty. Rather love how Bruegel calls out the New Babylon strategies. Perlie’s not listening to Maggie about not trusting him. Perlie has been a testing man this season. He does make the valid point of not having much alternative, plus actually leaving is going to prove tough. Bruegel had some damn fine scenes, and he gets the good rug pull with Narvaez. Which would explain Dascha’s name still being in the credits, which I was wondering about that, see we both clocked that. Mean old Lucia surely was one stubborn bitch. And I thought my family was bad with that. “A pain in the ass even in death”, and that “with her dying breaths, she was like, “I’m gonna rat out this bitch.” that’s next level petty.”, like you said, and I got such delight from that statement. We see the Dama is now extra crispy. Bringing us to Mile. (You still call him the Croat, which is fine. Since we learned his name is Mile, I’m calling him Mile.) Interesting to see Mile spiral following the Dama’s death. More interesting is his offer to let Negan leave with his family, no strings attached. And it was nice that they shared a smoke. Honestly, I’m with Negan in accepting the cigarette. Whole world’s gone to hell, why not take up smoking in that scenario? Shame that he noticed the distinctive imprint on the rat, the blood stain on the boot with the shape that matches said distinctive imprint, and he recalled Negan mentioning the rat. Mile putting the puzzle together was great to see, especially as yes, Željko does have an eyebrow raising game that would make Leonard Nimoy jealous. Nice effort though it was, Mile stood little chance against Negan with Lucille 2: Electric Boogaloo. That darkness inside of Negan just yelled, “Can the Negan come out to play?”, and it was rather terrifying. He sent Mile packing. Loved his scene with Pierce who was locked up after he brought up the biting. Nice how the two gents shared the gin. Negan regaling Pierce with his Savior stories, yeah, I knew that’d hit you hard. I could see it in your eyes how that got you. Negan says he doesn’t like history. Which is a lie. Nobody dislikes history, they don’t like they’re own history. More on that in a sec, because first there is the bear. Yes, Jess, I do believe that we’ve got a fucking bear. That was a hell of a thing. Good teamwork with mother and son. Hershel’s knife throwing practice paid off, making us say, “NICE grouping!” Loved your reaction to the bear. Poor Ginny with her wound. You would think that Perlie would clock Ginny looking quite haggard. Hell of a line that Maggie said to her of seeing herself in Ginny, loved your reaction there. And you feel for Ginny: She came all that way just to pass out in front of Negan, yes, well, we can’t all be as fortunate as Abby, vis-à-vis revenge for one’s dad. Leading to one of the bigger topics of conversation. The Negan and Maggie drama, where you are PERFECT, Jess, with your reads on that. Sucks that Hershel was still trying to fulfill the Dama’s plan. Seems we both criticized his sneakery, my comment being, “You got to get up pretty early in the morning to sneak past Mom, kid.” The Dama did target that truth of the trauma that Maggie has never let go, understandably so. After last season where, as Negan described, vengeful thoughts that he thought she had put to bed, CLEARLY, she woke the hell up, this season has been the aftermath of that, and everything she’s been through. And it’s not just the result of that, it’s Maggie’s trauma and anger and resentment of Glenn’s death, the Savior war, Rick sparing Negan, and everything about that. As Hershel says, Maggie’s just never there for him, at least not as he wants her to be. I ponder does Maggie, knowingly or not, project the idea and image of Glenn onto Hershel, and if that plays into it too. You spoke very well of the growing self-awareness that Maggie has exhibited in this season especially. She is at least trying to listen. How successful she is, that’s a separate matter. Hershel shoving her, we share the thing of the boy being on thin ice on that one. And Maggie’s scene with Negan was striking. Jeffrey and Lauren were sublime. Love how they’ve reached a point where they are as candid with each other as they are. Love how it got you when Negan offers a likely location as to where Hershel is, and where Maggie offers the warning of Bruegel and his impending attack. And how Negan asks that all too resonant question: Was the past really what we remember? Or do we choose to remember things wrong? Sometimes, I feel the former is true. Sometimes, I feel the latter is true. Sometimes, I think we accept certain truths and memories for the complicated messes that they are. We know that they weren’t perfect. And yet, still, we wish that we could return to that as it would mean that certain people live still, certain places still exist, and we can be who we used to be rather than who we’ve become. Love how when Negan poses the question, Maggie has no answer. You were more surprised by Annie and Joshua than I was. We did both entertain the idea of the Dama and Mile shooting straight, but yes, it was suspect enough that we had our doubts. As it is, they were captured. And it gets a man, seeing Negan turn them back, which you note that given the shit’s hitting the fan, that might be for the better. Though it hurts seeing Negan make that call. He’s reaching the point where he already knows that he’s the villain. He thought that he could be the villain to earn some measure of the happy ending, and that hope has been undermined at every turn. So, he comes to that painful conclusion: Sometimes to love someone, you got to be a stranger. That is the call he made. And that’s where we leave things on whilst we wait two weeks to share the remaining two episodes with you. I’ll still catch the episode next week, but I shall be patient with the reactions, as it is more important that you have the time to yourself and your best friend. You spoke of the numbers. Yes, I have noticed that they’ve not been great, but this world is home to you. And for what it’s worth, I have been greatly treasuring the time sharing this world of The Walking Dead with you, Jess. Thank you for this week’s beautiful reaction.
