I haven't yet had time to watch the other two available episodes, so this is going purely on what the first one gave me. And it's really working for me so far. Most of all, after suffering through all the weaker parts of the Defenders shows, it's actually pretty refreshing to get one of these where it's a deliberate part of the storytelling that the hero kind of sucks. For once, no one is impressed by someone who spends every second they're onscreen throwing their weight around and acting like they're the main character by default, and within a few minutes that attitude has already gotten her kicked out of college (including a surprise return of Jim Rash's cameo from Civil War; clearly he's not taking any chances with this kind of thing after the amount of times Lil Bulb turned evil). And Dominique Thorne is fantastic at playing up that arrogance you're happy to see smack into reality, while still being likable enough that you want to see her learn to be better rather than just shutting off the show right now. It also helps that she has such an immediately compelling opposite number in The Hood, who's got two pints of Sam Adams but he's working on three. I've found out that he's actually from a standalone miniseries in Marvel's mature-themed "Max" line, so this is a pretty deep pull, and I'm already looking forward to what more can be done with this relationship (although I'll say right here, please don't have them fuck). This is kind of new territory for the MCU, having a main character who's explicitly on the wrong side of the law like this, at least a law that's not obviously corrupt like the Sokovia Accords. Echo's the only one that comes close, and she was already out of the game by the time she got her own show. My one gripe is that this supposed mechanical genius seemingly doesn't know how a lever works, and just pulls on it so that she might as well just be using her hands, rather than getting any kind of fulcrum. That ending is one hell of a hook, and I have absolutely no idea what could be going on here. From the flashback, I gather that they were both gunned down right in front of her, and with the way she acts about it, it'll be ridiculous if the show tries to say Natalie didn't actually die, like that bullshit from the last season of Alias. And if she programmed the AI to be like this, why is she acting so surprised at it? That's easily what makes me most want to keep going, and I'm very glad to have you along with it.

Start by saying that I love the color coordination game with the jewelry and the top, Jess. We share the thing of going into this not really knowing the title character. The most knowledge that I possess of Ironheart is from Wakanda Forever, same as you. I do recall that she was for you a bright light amongst the sea of tears that was that reaction. A “short, sweet, and solid opener” is an apt description. Find it interesting how they don’t really handhold if one missed Wakanda Forever, yet they reestablish Riri’s character rather well. I am sensing that I’m going to need translations for the slang at times, for instance, how Riri says that she’s, how did she, “not going to roast Tony off rip.”, which I heard that last night, and again in the reaction, and my response is, “...What?” The local news over the past week has of course been focused on the primary setting of the show being Chicago. The Toddlin’ Town. Home of the stockyards. Mrs. O’Leary’s cow. The White Sox. The Cubs. Carl Sandburg. “Hog Butcher for the World, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and the Nation’s Freight Handler; Stormy, husky, brawling, City of the Big Shoulders.” Funny moment too when Riri has to specify to Not Clippy that she means the city Chicago, not the band. My dad loved that band. And I love how you stressed “No shade to Chicago” when expressing confusion as to how the Microsoft Word assistant came up with the band before the city. Honestly, fair question. You speak well of the difference in financial situations between Riri and Tony as Tony had plenty of bread, and Riri does not. You had the response that you had to the line of Riri being a horrible steward to Tony Stark’s legacy, the line honestly makes me ask, “...And that’s a bad thing?” I object to the description of Riri being a “wiseass who got kicked out of school”, she’s a smartass who got kicked out of school. Her ass has a ways to go before being wise. Leads to her seemingly teaming up with this questionable bunch, or at least a bunch with a questionable leader. That elevator scene is pure Saw shit. We agree on the idea of gathering round the campfire and sharing everyone’s reasons with the criminal activity. They established some good skill in their opening scene. Got pulled out of things some by the bad guys hiding out in the van disguised as a plumbing van, that I would assume was supposed to read OK Plumbing, but the Wet Bandits (Or would that be the Sticky Bandits?) had the rights. Stu is definitely the Marv of the group, good to see Eric André. I am happy to see you delighted about Shea being in this. I’m sorry to say that I don’t really know who that is, but I’m happy for you, Jess. Times like this, I wish my aunt/godmother was still alive so I could talk to her. She watched a lot of RuPaul. And you two would have loved each other, Jess, I swear. Of the other new cast, I was most excited for Cree Summer. Her character only has the one scene here, and I say, “Oh, I LIKE her!” Bringing us to what seems to be the big emotional crux of this, Natalie. Yeah, they establish her well, both how they show who she was, and you like her, and how she holds the present absence in the narrative. Your reactions to the topics of Natalie tell me that if the show really dives into it, that’s bad luck for your makeup. In addition to the contention with grief for Natalie, there’s going to be the focus on the grief for her dad. Which means that burning through this show as fast we are means that we won’t be spreading that out over the month of July. That’s...probably good. At least in that respect. See how my heart holds out with that one. I like how you say that you’d be going through it badly if you lost your best friend and dad in a very sudden manner as Riri did. Of course, it doesn’t make the biggest difference either way, suddenness-wise. People ask when you lose someone, especially when you lose a parent, they ask if it was sudden. That very real answer is, “No. And yes. It’s always sudden.”, as they say. But again, with the show airing as fast as it is, we aren’t going to stretch that out, so my worry of how bad it is going to be for me isn’t QUITE as overwhelming as it could be. And as Ryan notes, a hell of a hook with the last scene with Natalie9000. Love you got the laugh that you did. Lovely first reaction, to Ironheart, Jess, thanks.

I’m showing my bias which favors Star Wars rather than Marvel. By that I mean, I did see all three Ironheart episodes last night, but not right away, and I wasn’t in a rush, though I should have been as I had work first thing this morning. Andor, every week, my ass was seated on the dot, and I had all the attention on that. So far, the show is a nice little thing. Under the shadow of Daredevil back in spring, but you temper expectations. Sort of like how Revenge of the Sith was such a high bar, and you had to remind yourself of that when The Force Awakens was the first Star Wars movie since Revenge of the Sith; that being especially prominent with John’s music for the films. Have yet to get to Defenders, so no real frame of reference there. They are hitting a good balance with Riri. You see her brilliance and results are unquestionable, but her methods and attitude face some scrutiny, and it’s a nice realistic portrayal. And you see she does face the consequences such as the college expulsion, and for legitimate reasons at that. In addition to Jim Rash doesn’t want to take the chances. Seems hypocritical, considering the amount of times Lil Bulb went bad. Not to mention his villainous partnership with Mary Elizabeth Winstead. (Which, as soon as I say that: one, that likely shows my age some, I imagine, and two, that reference is probably too obscure, so, sorry about that.) The Hood is in a similar thing as Muse as I know he’s in the comics. I’ve never seen him before. (Wholeheartedly agree with you on the “please don't have them fuck” request by the way.) Good note on this being a case of an MCU protagonist being on the wrong side of the law. Echo being the closest though, as you note, she was already out of the game by the time she got her own show, and even then, we still explored her criminal past, and Vincent and Alaqua expertly sold it well that much though she may be a more noble villain, she was still a villain, and she made the effort to escape the shadow of Kingpin, and she got that lovely happy ending. Fair point on the lever. As I mentioned, I’ve not seen Alias, so I can’t speak to that point, but the way this has been set up, it would indeed be bullshit if somehow, Natalie returned. (Well, technically, she now has, but more on that later.) I’m expecting that I might not love this as much as some of the past MCU projects, and even then, it’s been fun so far, and even more fun, as you say, to have Jess along with it.

Is it weird that my mind immediately goes to the musical when I hear "Chicago?" And we can't forget it's where the Pope is from. I go with Steven Wright's line: "Everyone dies suddenly. It's the only way you can die. You're alive, you're alive, you're alive, you're dead."
