The canonical reason Meowth can speak English is that he went to Hollywood (yes literally American Hollywood) and saw a female Meowth he saw was hot as shit so he forced himself to learn human language as to impress her; the female Meowth could care less about human language and so with no other options the Meowth we know turned to a life of crime. If you think that's weird try explaining it to a 4 year old.

We have a few animals in English named after the sounds they make. It’s mostly birds or bugs like cuckoos and katydids. There’s one called the grey go-away bird, which feels like a stretch if you listen to the audio clip on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_go-away-bird

I watched these episodes on an airplane and once Yoko’s new outfit was introduced I because even more self conscious about being seen watching what appears to be a show about robots and boobs. Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
