It literally means "piercing through heaven." Gurren is something like "crimson lotus" and Lagann is "enveloping face."

I started this series a couple of times. First time I watched 3 or 4 episodes. I liked it but might have also started watching something else. Last year I started again after the pilot season. Got to episode 6 and put it on pause for a bit but still watched when i needed something else. When you started the series here I started watching again but this time I completed the series and loved most of it. I was thrown off of ep 4 animation (different but looked like it was for budget reasons) then ep 6 being a recap (thought budget again but did learn about the cut). I love the series so much I want a gurren lagann tattoo of the skull symbol.

Tears for different reasons in each of these episodes. Every time. Perfect show. Its been said before but the movie fight is somehow even more epic. Will Matt get a gurren lagann tattoo? Also wanted to add, that the creators said that they didn't know how this show was going to end when they started making it. Which is why the very start doesn't match with where the show ends. They retroactively said that it's an alternate universe, but still much like watchmen it is staggering for something so singularly unique and perfect to not be have thought out in full advance. Just another level of why this show is fully peak fiction.

I heard you talking about the dragon ball movie in chain reactions. Just a short anecdote; in college, my roommate and I watched the dragon ball movie through an illegal upload on YouTube. It was uploaded into 11 parts iirc, and as we got to part six, parts one and two were already taken down, so we put it in 1.5x speed and finished this disaster. The film truly benefited from being displayed in the worst possible video quality one could imagine, on a laptop screen with indistinguishable dialogue. Two out of ten, where the two points are gifted because of our very funny assumptions for what the plot was.

Simon got that Final Fantasy X ending. Rossiu at the ending is roughly the same age as Nick currently. If Nick wants to see a wall of skulls, there's one at the Mooter museum of medicine in Philidelphia. A doctor collected dozens of skulls to discredit the theory of frenology which suggested that the shape of the skull determined personality and morals. It was a super racist theory. The anti-spiral alternate reality despair thing is extremely fucked. Viral's in particular would be rough. So next show is avatar the last airbender? You all would love it! There’s an animal big guy and a little guy in it so it’s cute and it is playful but the violence is based on martial arts so the “bending” is sort of grounded and yet they are throwing fire and boulders at each other. The storyline is impressive and an all time great arc for all the characters. The movie really did the show dirty 😬

I am very surprised this show is this beloved. I found it a drag to get through that I am now like 3 months behind the podcast. In fact, out of the three Gainax we watched I only truly loved Evangelion. The other two were not great. Hopefully, I find Birdie Wing fun
