[A/N:

Happy New Year, everyone! It seems appropriate somehow that I stayed up the entire night trying to get this chapter finished. I heard the last fireworks go off so long ago, and I thought I was only an hour from done then. But here we are, and I like it.

Today is officially the first skip day of January. This is silly, I admit, since I'm posting a chapter right now. But having the extra time between the past three chapters was a lifesaver with the end of December turning out so much busier than I expected. May my January be very boring, and may my schedule get back on track.

I hope 2025 is very good to you all and that you enjoy all the good stuff I have planned for Alden.

206: Herdcreatures IV

Standing on a beach as the tide came in, but so much darker than that. The roiling substance that was not water, that was not substance, the threat—it pulled the sand from beneath your feet, pressed against you, promised that you would learn you were only a more stubborn grain. The erosion would eventually take you, too.

The artist had painted that.

And shadows. Lifeforms that had been stubborn in their own ways were now broken, the chaos bleeding from the fractures between what should have, could have been and what was and was changing.

Alden’s body gasped for him, and finally, he could see the picture clearly, though there was a thin quality to it. Like if he looked too hard he’d pop it, and the experience of chaos that hid beneath its surface would pour over him once more.

What he saw was a barren, red place. A desert of some kind, with a hill in the distance in the form of a single burgundy roll crossing the width of the painting.

The shards of slick, translucent gray material that seemed to dig into the paint in some places and float above it in others were demons. They hadn’t been given any features, but Alden somehow knew it. Whether they were a symbolic or realistic representation of what had been in the place didn’t matter to him. What mattered as his eyes focused on the center of the painting was the knight who stood there beside a single, stalky plant. It was taller than the man was, but it was only brown sticks. It should have looked dead to Alden. It didn’t.

That’s alive. It’s right. There are no demons in that spot.

The knight had been painted from such a distance that the landscape around him was oppressive. And as Alden stared at him, the pop happened. The impression of chaos hit him again and then ended just as abruptly, leaving his attention so fully on the knight that it was like the rest of the landscape had ceased to exist.

The man stood in a place of safety. The air was somehow clearer there, and the ground had something mossy growing on it. He’d hung a small wooden lantern from one of the stalks, and his hand cradled the tip of another, where some pale fluff hung. Seed or visiting creature—the painting didn’t tell Alden that. But it did make him feel like he was standing right there. The knight’s coat was only lightly studded with designs on the sleeves. The green fabric was repaired at the waist in the same way Stuart had repaired Alden’s suitcase, with a patch that seemed to melt into the cloth at the edges. His hair was a tight brown braid; both of his pink eyes were looking out of the painting into the darkness.

He was waiting.

He was tired.

Alden felt the way the chaos couldn’t touch this place because of the knight, and as the distance between them increased again, he was powerfully struck by the existence of that plant and the lantern. That tiny patch of life in the middle of so much wrongness.

It was so important, and he couldn’t pull his eyes away from it…because what if it disappeared?

The painting held him there like his witness was required. He didn’t resist, and he wasn’t released. Not until a pair of hands covered his eyes from behind.

What? Who?

Disoriented, he tried to turn to see the person who’d done it before their hands were even pulled away, and he ended up bumping his bag full of Stuart’s journals into two other people who’d been standing so close that there wasn’t a single step between them and him.

Crap. Library. People. Several people. Books I shouldn’t have been reading.

The hands disappeared.

“He’s well! Look how well he is! So there’s no need to call Instructor Rel-art’h. Everyone go back to enjoying your study, please.”

“Quinyeth! I just said not to cover his eyes! What if he—?”

“Human, can you speak?”

“Alden. His name is Alden. I told you thrice.”

“Alden, are you damaged?”

“His mind is probably damaged. He wasn’t aware of us at all. He might still not be aware. His features are tainted by obvious distress—”

“Hush! He’s just not speaking because you’re talking so much.”

“I’m all right! Can I have some space?” Alden said to the chattering group of six Artonans who surrounded him.

The one who’d covered his eyes and declared him well was Quinyeth. In her outfit with the wooly cape, she might have looked more put-together and official than the other students, who were all dressed differently from her and from each other in what must have been their casual weekend preferences. But since they were all shooting her looks with one or two eyes and sighing, the impression was ruined.

“I am well,” Alden insisted more firmly, holding his bag under his arm, afraid he’d bump into one of them again and the fabric would split open, spilling journals all over the place. Because that was reasonable. “The art here is very good. I was appreciating it.”

“I told you!” Quinyet said, sounding confident but looking relieved as everyone finally took a step back from him. The sprout of hair sticking up from her clip waved merrily. “Alden was enjoying himself.”

“He was enjoying himself too much if he didn’t notice us calling out to him and poking him,” said one.

They were poking me?

“Who enjoys the paintings up here?” said another.

“He said appreciating. Quinyeth-wit said enjoying.”

How long was I standing here? Alden wondered.

“Again, I think we must call Instructor Rel-art’h. Even if Avowed Alden has now been <<forcefully denied>> interaction with the painting.”

The one who’d spoken was a boy who Alden guessed might be the future knight Quinyeth had gone to greet. He was the only one other than her who hadn’t been in the library when Alden last looked down over the railing.

Is he a Rel-art’h fan?

It was only a judgmental leap, based on the facts that he wanted to call the instructor and he wore two clips in his long purple-black hair in the exact same style Rel-art’h favored. They weren’t jeweled, but they were identical in shape.

“I’m very well.” Alden tried to look bright and healthy and like he hadn’t let himself be glued to a painting for an unknown length of time. “Hn’tyon Rel-art’h is a busy person.”

Who already gave me behavior notes once and seems like the kind of involved teacher and older brother who’d definitely lecture me for half a day on how to avoid being all human in front of the artwork.

And that was the best of the likely outcomes.  Alden didn’t want Stuart to get the lecture in his place.

“I’ll let him know I appreciated this—” He pointed toward the painting, careful not to look at it except through his peripheral vision. “—when I see him again. Probably soon. I think Stu and I are going back to his house soon.”

“Not too soon I hope,” said a girl. “They’ve only just gotten a chance to talk to him after so long, and Noh cares so much about him. I’m sure she’ll think of the right thing to…”

She trailed off, turning one eye to the boy who wanted to call Rel-art’h and blinking the other at Alden.

“He’s enjoying the morning with those he hasn’t seen since he went to his preferred university,” the boy said.

“I can’t imagine him at LeafSong, even after this much time,” one of them said. “Do you think he’s all right at the kind of parties they have?”

“Of course he’s not. The rumors I’ve—”

Of course this Avowed who’s just had a frightening experience doesn’t need to hear us gossip about other wizards,” the Rel-art’h impersonator said.

He’s about two sentences away from me deciding I don’t like him much.

“That’s right!” Quinyeth chimed in. “He doesn’t need to hear about LeafSong. Nobody needs to call anybody. Asay doesn’t need to worry; he needs to sit down and have productive study time in our quiet and peaceful library that is so safe for humans. Alden will come with me.”

She looked like she really wanted Alden to come with her, away from all this talk of tattling to a faculty member.

Asay, thought Alden, the name familiar. Asay-tor. Sent away with Noh-en for showing too much emotion that day in the snow. All grown up and becoming a knight himself now, if I haven’t misunderstood who he is.

Strange how that day was so much more recent to Alden than to the people who had actually lived through it.

And through others after it, he reminded himself.

Asay-tor gave Quinyeth what must have been the fiftieth look she’d gotten since Alden had regained his senses. “You’re not going to get in trouble,” he said patiently.

What about me? Am I going to get in trouble? Alden wanted to ask. Is Stuart? What if Rel-art’h checks my bag and finds a bunch of journals on magical topics that haven’t been spread around widely on Earth? Is there a Privacy of the School tattoo to go with Privacy of the House? And how irate will Stuart be if they have another tattooing of the guest fight here and now?

“She’s definitely going to get in trouble if you tell on her, Asay-tor,” the other girl said. “She left an Avowed alone in the top library without even warning him about the paintings.”

“I knew how this kind of painting worked,” Alden volunteered. “I don’t think you should blame Quinyeth for that. And I think you should trust me to know if I need to speak to someone or not. I’m capable of making decisions about my own wellbeing.”

He positioned the shoulder with the commendation on it toward Asay-tor on the pretext of turning to address the group. “This painting was just…so good. Now I know to bring someone with me if I want to look at ones that aren’t made especially for my species. Quinyeth, let’s go so that my presence isn’t a distraction for these students. I don’t know all of your names, but thank you for your worry and poking.”

His mouth might be saying, “Let me go,” but internally he was wishing that they’d all go away for two minutes so that he could put the journals back.

They didn’t. Instead, he got belated introductions to everyone. Asay-tor introduced himself as Declared Asay-tor, which confirmed Alden’s earlier assumption that the Declared title referred to someone who’d made the choice to become a hn’tyon but hadn’t yet had their first affixation. Asay-tor talked less stiffly once it was decided by the majority of the others that Alden wasn’t in need of help and that no harm had been done.

One of them thought he must be the first human ever to set foot in the Rapport school. Another was curious about how he knew Stuart well enough to be a family-approved guest. And though that was an obvious thing for them to wonder, Alden was completely unprepared with clever answers.

He said, “We met at LeafSong, and we’ve been staying in touch since I was rescued by the Quaternary.” Then he tried to be vague when they asked follow-ups.

It was like he’d shown puppies he was hiding bacon in his pockets. They sensed a story. He couldn’t come up with any non-bacony responses when they pried, and they pried a lot before he finally made an inelegant escape by telling Quinyeth he needed a tour of the nearest bathroom.

I’ve almost forgotten the mishnen isn’t common knowledge.

Stuart’s whole family seemed to know.

The Primary said he would appreciate me not telling, and I know Stuart would appreciate me not telling. I guess when this comes up I need to imply we met in his lab class and hit it off or something? Alden left the bathroom and found Quinyeth waiting in an alcove just down the hallway.

“I thought we could see some of the classrooms next,” Quinyeth said. “Would you like that?”

“Is Stuart still busy?”

“They finished with the bokabv, and he decided to help Gilor and others prepare materials for one of the guest instructors who’ll be coming this week.”

Alden wondered if that meant the reunion was going better than he’d feared it would after seeing the journals. He hoped so.

I should probably forget about our original plans and just go with the flow so he doesn’t feel pressured on my behalf.

“I wouldn’t mind seeing more of the school.”

It would be the reverse of the tour he’d given Esh-erdi, he realized with amusement. Like the universe was balancing itself out. One Artonan tours human high school; one human tours Artonan Rapport School.

He was kind of looking forward to seeing more of it.

“I am sorry about the painting,” Quinyeth said. “When Asay and I came in and they were all trying to gently call your attention away from it so that you wouldn’t experience a shock, I was afraid I’d made a horrible mistake with Stu’s new companion.”

She started down the hall, and Alden moved to walk beside her.

“I can take the blame for that myself. I should have known to be careful of the paintings.” It must be similar to the way he was so susceptible to the inward path at Yenu-pezth’s House of Healing. “I’ve had experience with getting pulled in by things like that before.”

They were walking past a window blazing with sunlight, and Alden had to squint to see her properly. The hallway beneath their feet transitioned smoothly from wood to grass for a couple of steps, then back. It was a feature Alden didn’t see a reason for unless it was aesthetics or a need to have ground element here on the upper floors.

“Did you really like it?” she asked. “The paintings up there…I love them.”

“I did like it. Not in a simple way like I like warm sun or good food, but it felt like an important thing to see.”

“The chaos wasn’t too much?”

“It wasn’t real chaos,” Alden said. There had been enough distance and enough difference that it didn’t give him flashbacks to his own time in a world stripped and altered by corruption, thank goodness. It was like the painting, or its creator, knew exactly how to control the effect so the meaning wasn’t lost in the horror.

“I only started accessing the top library this year. If I could stare at them as hard as you were, I would,” Quinyeth said. “Our knights…it’s wonderful to see people I know choosing to place their hands and feet where the knights who came before did. I knew Asay would choose it before he ever said it, and I don’t know what it will feel like on the day when I see him painted in that way, but I know it will happen.”

If you’re so stoked that some of your classmates are making the choice, then why won’t you respect Stuart’s? Alden was still angry about the skill research journal with the blank comment page. It was hard to forget about it when he was carrying it farther and farther from the shelf it belonged on with each step he took. Maybe he wasn’t picking up on every detail that made things the way they were, but he couldn’t imagine how Stuart could have experienced his old school friends ignoring that one journal as anything but a slap every time he checked it for replies.

Luckily, before he asked Quinyeth that question in what would no doubt have been a challenging tone, his better judgement caught his tongue, and he picked up on what she’d just said.

Only accessed that library this year…plus Stuart was surprised she’d chosen votary already, and Noh-en made the comment about her doing it as soon as she wouldn’t look silly for rushing.

Quinyeth was younger than Stuart, Noh-en, and Asay-tor. Maybe by a significant enough amount that they had never even shared classes. And she hadn’t had reason or time to read a graduate’s journal, as far as Alden knew.

Don’t group her in with the gokoratches. She’s a nice person who was excited to show off her vanilla candle from Earth.

“You want to be Asay-tor’s votary,” he said. “How did you decide that? And is it something that’s sure-sure once he’s a knight? How does everything flow now that you’ve both made your choice?”

“We don’t have an obligation to each other,” she answered. “I can still change my mind about how I want to serve the needs of the Rapports, and of course a knight can always decide not to have a votary dedicated to them. Asay’s been my older sibling in behavior for years, though, so we know each other well. I’m not brave enough to do what he’s doing, but by deciding early that I’ll help him, I’ll make some of his troubles fade. He can choose his courses of study with confidence that I’ll make up for any lack. He can tell me all his secrets, and I’ll keep them eternally. He hasn’t told me any yet, but he could

“And don’t tell him this part because it’s a surprise—I’m doing everything necessary to qualify to go on his first mission as a casting assistant! I only have to convince everyone I’m ready, and I’m sure I can.”

“That sounds brave to me,” said Alden.

“It’s not brave if you’re not fearful.” Quinyeth turned her head to look at his commendation. “As you know. I like your pezyva. Who embroidered your honor upon it?”

Alden told her about Tuck and Yinuo.

“Human Ryeh-b’ts, like you.” She started down a staircase Alden recognized from their trip up earlier. It was on an exterior wall, and the windows overlooked the grounds. Alden could see the bokabv down there, with no company other than her interesting stick.

“You’re the first human any of us in the library had ever seen close enough to talk to.”

“Sorry if I’m not the most wonderful representative.”

“Stu must think you are! If it’s not rude of me to ask, when are you going to grow your face hair?”

Alden laughed. “I’m already growing it, but there’s not enough of it yet to look good. I shave it off. When my beard is fuller I’ll probably try it to see if I like it.”

“Beard,” Quinyeth said.

She definitely just added that to her English vocabulary list.

“Is there a ceremony when you decide there’s enough hair for a good beard?”

“Not in my culture. Maybe somewhere. I don’t know. There should be.”

I’m the first human any of them have ever seen up close.

That wasn’t surprising in one way—humans were a fraction of the Avowed population, and they weren’t a big fraction. But in another way, it didn’t match with the impression he’d gotten at LeafSong, on Anesidora, and with all the wizards currently staying at Matadero.

Maybe I’m always running into human enthusiasts just because I’m human.

“A lot of the art’hs hadn’t met one of us until I visited either.”

He was trying to work out how to ask, “If you Rapport kids are all so curious, why don’t the adults just summon one of us for you to meet?” without it sounding off.

Quinyeth didn’t give him time.

“Earth was such a controversial resource world. Even some of the <<Rapportfolk>> who summon Avowed very casually won’t call your people unless their service is <<irreplaceable>>. It’s changing, but Rapport I changes more slowly I think. The first thing Asay asked when I told him you were here was whether or not I was sure you were a human! Like I might have been confused about it after walking with you all over the school.” She trailed her hand through the fringe on the bottom of a tapestry as they left the stairs behind. “He was so surprised that he asked that before he even wanted to know about Stu finally coming back. He thinks Instructor Rel-art’h is hinting that he hopes we’ll include his brother in the beauties and traditions of school votary service. Do you think that’s what the instructor wants? Did he say anything to you about it? The duty list says Stu will be here tomorrow, too. So we have time to plan something special.”

Alden’s burning interest in why Earth was so controversial was dampened by the question about Stuart. Quinyeth was asking so sincerely, like it was obvious to her that Stuart’s personal guest would be onboard with a plan to fill his life with special votary service moments. It threw him off-balance.

“Um… ”

She’s just asking if Stuart wants to do votary traditions with them. Maybe he would under certain circumstances. Maybe it’s gone well with Noh-en and the others, and he’d love to now. But he was totally going to run away from them all earlier.

And there was the assumption that Rel-art’h was giving them all hidden signals through their chore list, of all things.

It feels like she’s scheming against Stuart without realizing she’s scheming against him unless I’m just being clueless.

The messenger bag on his shoulder felt heavier than it had a moment ago.

Deciding what to say was hard.

“Stu is very sure he wants to be a knight. Still,” he said. “He hasn’t changed his mind. Maybe he would enjoy spending time with you all and experiencing the traditions with you, but I think he would be hurt if you only included him in something special for the wrong reason.”

She stopped and faced him, so he stopped, too.

“Do you think their reasons are bad?”

“I don’t know what all the reasons are,” Alden said slowly. “But if Stu-art’h knows them and disagrees with them…”

Quinyeth rose up onto her toes and then went back down again a couple of times, her expression thoughtful. “Asay says if he had Stu’s place in the way of things, he wouldn’t let his feelings deafen him to the call of better service.”

Better service?”

“Stu-art’h’s life is his father’s <<centermost joy>>. Normally, I wouldn’t say so about a person with siblings, but even his siblings say it openly. And then there is all of their love for him. And Hn’tyon Alis-art’h’s. If he’s wrong, he risks more than himself. More than most people who choose the path of highest onus.”

When Alden didn’t answer quickly, she hurried to add. “I think about it from my own perspective, too! There are no knights in my family, but I have Asay to consider. I know for sure I’ll be able to carry the role of votary, so even if I do love the paintings…and imagine sometimes…trying what I’m not sure I can do would be too selfish. Wouldn’t it?”

She looked like she was really hoping for an answer.

“I don’t know,” said Alden. “But Stu is sure. And the Primary gave his permission.”

Only after his son got his foot chomped and his leg exploded while hanging out with people committing a criminal act. What was the Primary thinking?

“Declared Asay-tor probably made the most thoughtful choice for himself during his own choosing season,” he said. “I doubt he had time to choose more properly for Declared Stu-art’h than Declared Stu-art’h could. So.”

He gave her a friendly smile because he didn’t want her to feel like he was mad at her. She seemed more like the gokoratches’ kid sister who’d jumped the gun on her own choosing season a little bit if she was confiding hints of wistfulness in the outsider she’d just met today. “I’m not sure what Hn’tyon Rel-art’h thinks, but the bokabv is something Stu requested for me. I needed to see one for my mind healing. I hope the instructor only wanted to do a fun thing for the children at this school while he was helping me anyway. My respect for him will be profoundly diminished if he used his brother’s kindness toward me to manipulate him into a situation that makes him unhappy.”

Quinyeth gasped.

Probably the word Alden had used for “profoundly” was too strong.

Claiming I’ll lose respect for a knight is kind of wild actually, he admitted to himself. Rel-art’h would have to be heinous for him to actually stop respecting his sacrifices, and so far all the guy had done was get him a herdcreature and possibly nudge his little brother and his little brother’s former friends together, using Alden as an excuse. Well, I said it, so let’s not backtrack on it when I’m trying to make a point.

“Thank you for offering to show me the classrooms. It sounds fun, and I enjoyed visiting your room and smelling the candle and meeting you. But I want to go see Stu now. If he’s busy, I don’t mind watching and waiting.”

He made it three steps down the hall before Quinyeth was chasing after him, her words tumbling over themselves as she tried to simultaneously tell him that she would lead the way to Stu and that Instructor Rel-art’h was a beacon of forthrightness and worthiness and she couldn’t believe she had said something that suggested in the smallest way that he might be capable of respect-diminishing plots.

By the time they made it outside, Alden felt like he owed her a cup of hot chocolate for her nerves.

She tried to direct him toward the hillside stairs, but he shook his head and pointed toward the back wall of the courtyard. “He’s that way.”

She blinked. “Let me send a message. They were all supposed to be at—”

“I know the way,” Alden said. “I can target him. It’s part of my skill.”

He could feel Stuart in that direction.

[Hello. I’m coming your way,] he texted. [If you don’t want me to, shout or send a spell or glare at me when I arrive.]

It was absurd that he could run around the Rapport and sleep in the same cottage as Stuart, but Stuart still couldn’t text him back without impersonating Evul. He didn’t have the I-am-Evul tablet with him here as far as Alden knew.

No shouts or spells came, so Alden climbed up the root-festooned courtyard wall and headed uphill. It was almost too steep for the first few steps, but it became more manageable.

“I’ll leave,” Quinyeth said suddenly from behind him. “Noh says I should.”

He looked back at her. She was just standing there on a hummock that was half root, half soil. Watching him hopefully. He wondered if she wanted him to give her permission to stay. It seems equally likely that she wants me to tell her I changed my mind about Rel-art’h.

“Do you want a piece of fruit from Earth?” he asked. “The next time I come I could bring you one. Or maybe honey. Bees make it.”

“Yes!” she exclaimed. “Yes! I will have a gift for you, too!”

He watched her go, then sent a message to remind himself to buy honey.

Only a couple of minutes later, he and Stuart found each other under one of the trees.

Ah, they got him in the whole outfit, Alden thought, taking in the sight of the wooly cape and the long skirt-like layer that split in the front to reveal the pants. It was a cool-looking uniform.

“I’m sorry our plans were interrupted.” Stuart spoke with unmistakably false cheer. “I hope you enjoyed the bokabv. And the school. I’m glad you got to see the interior. It’s an important part of the Rapport, and I…”

Alden let the Primary’s son ramble until the purple faded from his ears. Then he said, “I accidentally ate swimmers that are poisonous for my liver, and I looked into a painting in the top library that I couldn’t escape from on my own, and I upset Quinyeth by telling her that I would have diminished respect for Rel-art’h if he used my bokabv to make your life harder.”

Stuart stared at him.

Alden smiled.

“You ate something poisonous to you?”

“That was the smallest mistake of the morning. The Contract said I didn’t eat too much. I feel fine.”

“Poison is not a small mistake, Alden.”

“It was, it was. Did you hear about how I insulted your brother?”

“Rel’s feelings are less important than your liver. I should have been more watchful! After you ate the jar of oil—”

Shhhhh. The oil was embarrassing.”

They were still staring at each other. Stuart had a real smile fighting its way through the fake one he’d been wearing just a moment ago.

“Was it all right?” Alden asked. “Seeing the people you used to spend so much time with? Or should we have run to hide in the woods?”

“It was shitty,” Stuart said. “They were very happy to see me, and I have missed them, and it was shitty.”

Alden nodded. “Are we leaving now?”

Yes,” Stuart said fervently.

The messenger bag weighed about a hundred pounds now.

“Good. But first…I really did make a mistake. I hope you won’t be angry.”

“If it was a mistake of course I won’t,” Stuart said. “We will not be friends who lose our affection for each other because of mistakes, will we?”

Oh no. He’s making me want to tell him even less.

“I don’t intend to be that kind of friend. Let me explain. I know I wasn’t supposed to be reading in the library at the top of the tower.”

Stuart’s brows lifted. “If you speak of proper discretion, I think you weren’t supposed to be in that library at all.”

“Right. You’re right. But I wanted to be there, so I didn’t tell Quinyeth no when she took me. I even said, ‘Yes, please take me there. I want to go.’ And I found some books. Upstairs.”

“Those aren’t books.”

“No. But they had writing in them, and I was interested in them. And I was looking at some of them when someone started talking about how there was a human in the library. I was afraid they were going to be upset when they found me reading up there, so I panicked and put the ones I was looking at in my bag.”

Stuart’s eyes turned to the bag. “You took <<study journals>>?”

Alden winced. “I panicked,” he repeated. “I wouldn’t have done it if I’d had thoughts in my head other than panic. Can I blame this on being human? If I could split my thoughts, part of me could have panicked and another part of me could have been calm and responsible.”

“Only if you had a medical problem,” Stuart disagreed. “That’s not how fear is supposed to affect an Artonan.”

Alden sighed. “I know.”

Stuart was still looking at the bag.

“This is not <<unmanageable>>,” he said. “First, you’ll tell me what you read. If it’s so serious that the idea of being caught reading it gave you intense fear, then it may be something we have to cover with a contract. Then I’ll return the study journals to the library. After that, I can schedule meetings between you and the students who wrote the journals.”

Meetings?”

“For you to apologize to them,” Stuart said matter of factly. “I’ll apologize to them, too.”

Oh my sweet echoing klerms, he’s so non-casual about this! Is it because I committed an offense against educational materials? It is, isn’t it?

“Here!” Alden said, hastily opening his bag and grabbing the journals. “And here.” He shoved his hand into his pezyva’s hidden pocket. “I only took…seven. I’m sorry. I read the first couple of pages of each and then all of the comments people wrote in the backs. Then I got caught by the painting.”

He held them out toward Stuart, who was looking down at the stack with widening eyes. The silver swoop on top of the first pale purple cover glimmered.

“But these are all mine?” He sounded unreasonably confused about it.

“I recognized the color. It’s the same as your auriad, so they were easy to find. But then I couldn’t put them all back quickly—”

“That’s because you took so many.”

“I apologize. I was interested in them.”

Stuart looked up from the stack at last. “Why?”

“Because they’re yours, I guess. And I know you.”

“You said you read the pages at the back.”

“I wanted to find out what school here was like for you.”

That’s so nosey of me, he thought. Why am I confessing to snooping through his past? I’m as bad as Haoyu eavesdropping and then telling everyone.

“And as I said that, I realized how nosey it is. Is there an Artonan word for nosey? I’m that. And I’m very sorry. I won’t take seven of your notebooks from the top library again without permission.”

Stuart smiled and took the stack from him. “Did you like the first pages of my thoughts for the studies?” he asked. “Since you read those.”

He’s not mad?

“I did. The teleportation one looks like it would be fascinating if I knew all the other sources of information you referenced. And the one about skills…I could tell you were working hard to figure yourself out. You were finding your way toward Maker of Narrow Ways, weren’t you? I imagined you taking your time to find the perfect skill for yourself. One rooted in concepts of connection, even though it severs. It’s very meaningful to see a record of that.”

Stuart held the stack of journals to his chest. “I was doing that. Thank you.”

Alden waited for him to say something else. He kind of expected it to be something about not eating poison or not picking up manuscripts in the first place if you were afraid of being caught with them.

“Let’s go take some more things from the school,” Stuart said.

“What?”

“It’s important to have others acknowledge your strength and determination, isn’t it? I respect yours. There are rings here I can use to create much more realistic demon-like effects with my casting. I think we should use them to train you this afternoon.”

“All right. Is this a reward for my mistake?”

“No. I just want to give you my sincere best, since we are learning partners of a sort today.”

He strode down the hill toward the school. It took him a while to realize Alden hadn’t followed right after him. Rust-colored eyes turned back questioningly.

“I’m coming! Thank you. I’ll do my sincere best, too.”

Happy new year sleyca! Alden just keep increasing Stuart’s favor point on him unintentionaly.

JJ Hunter

*cheers with happy youthfulness!*

Happy New Year. Bedtime soup for me, since I've been apparently living on Sleyca Standard Time for the past several weeks. Can we go back to being awake during the daylight for the New Year?

Thanks for the chapter.

Thanks for the great work and happy new year!

Happy new year :fireworks:

BatheticBoy

Happy New Year, and thanks for the chapter!

FeelingsandFoibles

I really, really like their friendship. I can just imagine how touched Stu was at seeing all his own journals and having Alden confirm he read and understood what he had written when no one else had commented anything meaningful, so to have someone finally acknowledge and UNDERSTAND what he spent so much time and effort looking into and researching must have felt... so, so validating.

the btrflyz

Happy new year! We see the return of "sincere best"! I remember Alden thinking that's what the last line of the pre-lesson chant he was doing with Kibby meant, so I'd take this as confirmation of that translation. Which is probably why Alden using that wording for the contract tattoo was so funny to Joe

Trugath

Do your sincere best!

Thomas Todd

Happy near year! This was a great chapter and made even better since it's my Birthday! I do love how Alden is just laying down the law about Stu, out right saying he'd lose respect for a knight if he's using Alden to manipulate Stu is pretty damn ballsy. Although I think even if that was what he's doing Stu's family might actually like that he said it since it's another demonstration that Alden is actually Stu's friend and that Stu has someone outside the family that he's close to

Carl Earl

Stu had SUCH a perfect reaction to the journals that I wish I could see this scene from his point of view, but I also know that would break several things in this story. Is it ok that I wish for it anyway?

Caerold

Such friendship.

BeautifulBusinessBoi

The ceremony of seeing if you’re ready for a beard or not is called No Shave November!

Cayos

So Alden can just target people without seeing them now. That's an upgrade

Happy new year! May you have good fortune!

JAMAJ

They really are becoming best friends 😭😭

Rachel Christensen

FRIENDSHIP. (I just really love them, okay.)

Wheels of Terror

Alden was probably the first to give him feedback like that on his journals.

João Vene

Great chapter.

Tungsten

loved it! Happy New Year!

Aspiring Moth

he did that in the combat assessment. he shouted at the system to target kon and text kon to tell him to pick up the umbrella, as he was too occupied to look at kon and target him normally. so targeting hasn't needed line of sight for a while, possibly since the very beginning

J Reynolds

A good start to the year! Typo alert: woolly, not wooly.

LadyLark

That was some serious acrobatic thinking to create that conversation about Stu being a Knight and visiting them more often.

Bob Ross

Alden just did in one afternoon what Stu wished anyone of his peers would do for him his entire scholastic life. Alden saw him, and actively sought to understand him. He went looking for Stu, and when found him...he grabbed as much of him as he could and ran! I love this so much

Bbyh

This will require a reread once I’ve had some sleep Edit: I like it, but I think sleyca has packed more meaning into these words than my brain can currently process

Spygeneer

Aww, Alden finally gave Stu a comment on his study journals that simply appreciated his academic efforts without calling his choice into question.

Bob Ross

I'm having the same reaction to reading this, I'm not and will never be Sleyca, but here's my take. Stu: [Ah yes, there is Alden, no need to burden him with my emotional distress, both half of minds on fake cheer, I am very good at subterfuge.] Alden: You took your eyes off me for five seconds so I poisoned myself, but also I went to the Library and did other typically Alden things that I'm admitting I believe are more important than poisoning myself. Stu: [Immediate both halves shift to concern for friend-weave Alden] Alden: Also, while I was up there, I read a bunch of books that I then stole. Accidentally. Stu: [Deep breath, now I have to arrange apology-meetings with those who did not trust my choices, and who did not see me/ How dare those gokokratches steal the gift of Aldens eyes with their words!] Alden: *Produces Stu's Journals* Stu: [These are mine/Those are mine] Alden: I went looking for them because I wanted to understand you. I have some questions. Stu: [.../...] Alden: I see you. Stu: [...Now that our friendship is woven-forever, we shall celebrate by partnering in crime ].

WannaBeATree

I hope they repeat the running/catching class again sometime. I wanna see character and skill growth from all of them! Not just the speedsters and a bit of water shaping! Some more Flashes! :) Now that I write that, it was probably a very good choice for first MPE classes. yes, they failed a lot, but by having that be the first classes, the students have a lot of time to think about how newly learned abilities (during the rest of the year) could have them perform better in those classes. I also still need to know if the school employs a rabbit to use a skill to make MPE-groups per class (maybe even assign teachers?) to maximize skill discovery. It would be logical. They already maximize Gym-time to not waste the equipment. Maximizing the "learning" during that time would be an easy multiplier on top of that. Or they use the informants AI? There are so so many opportunities to go beyond the standart, when the ones in charge can use magic . . .

WindGunner

I think he still had him targeted instead of targeting him again

denatured

Has Stu been repairing Alden's cruddy suitcase with chaos resistant patches? The luggage will be his true partner in the end!

WannaBeATree

On the topic of youthfulness. Did Stu and Noh got up to something a bit . . . private? - Alden messaged Stu and Quinyeth got a response from Noh. As if Stu told Noh, that they were comming. - Stu's ears were red - Stu was blabbing like one who is pannicy of being discovered would do - he was not where he was supposed to be, but at the equivalent of "behind the gym" where noone walk by Am I imagining things?

LadyLark

As a side note. I loved the beard conversation. Simply because of the fact that Alden didn’t imply something that wasn’t true. I read a lot of stories where things are implied about humanity that aren’t always true. For Example: In one book (It was a romance) a woman implied that all human women like scars. It’s unfortunate that, that isn’t strictly true. With Alden he was honest, in that he wasn’t sure if having a proper beard was a ceremonial thing, but he thought that there should be. I know that on a religious aspect Paganism has a ceremony for when girls experience their first period, as it’s the first step to womanhood. Basically Humans are diverse as a whole and trying to fit us all into a box can have some severe consequences for both sides of the incident because some human on our side misinformed an alien race.🧐

Alexander Dupree

“Let’s go take some more things from the school,” Stuart said. AAAAAAHHHHHHH HAHAHAHAHA STU IS CORRUPTED!!!

WannaBeATree

Great chapter! I am glad you took the extra time! :) I just wish I would remember to tell my future self, that a chapter comming a bit later, means that it will be extra awesome, than if it just dropped on time. Untill now I was always glad for the trade of extra time vs quality, but as soon as I am waiting, it's as if the knowledge is gone from my head. :/

Colton

Alden's connection with Stu acting as a severing of connection for Stu to his old classmates is AMAZING writing in regards to Stu's skill. Perfectly set up. I bet it's a big sign of being "seen" to be able to pick out someone's auriad color as well. Really brings it on home how little time needed by Alden acting sincerely like a friend can eclipse the large amount of insincere effort by his classmates. Perhaps that's a harsh perspective, but that's my take. However everyone else does seem to deprioritize Stu albeit for good reasons.

Sesharan

Alden out here bringing that polite-mean manner correction technique all the way from Earth to the Artonas!

Carl Earl

That's not a bad stab at it. I think my head is telling me that Alden is really good at reading people at the surface level, but he's bloody TERRIBLE at correctly interpreting the reasons behind their reactions. We've seen this lead to hilarity with his classmates, and we've seen it happen with Stu, but I think the cultural dissonance between humans and artonans is so stark that it leaves us unsure of how (and how badly) Alden's assumptions actually are. I'm fairly sure we will eventually, slowly, gain that knowledge, but atm we don't really have a good baseline to judge.

Reincheck

Happy New Year Sleyca!! I love that Alden stood up for Stu. They understand each other so well. It was so sweet. That jar of oil is gonna be a running joke between them, I just know it XD . And Quin-yeth is doing her best tour guide impression. She's precious.

Jazehiah

Second reading thoughts: * The chaos painting is really cool. I like that the painting is able to convey meaning like "this spot is alive." How does it work? I assume there's some actual magic to it. * The students' concern for Alden is kinda fun. Their arguing makes the scene better. * I'm struggling to remember Rel-art'h. * The "subtle" showing off of his commendation was funny. * Wow, these students are gossip hounds. * I wonder why Alden is so susceptible to things like the paintings and inward path. For the path, I thought it might be a case of Alden naturally being introspective. I'm beginning to think it's more closely related to his authority sensitivity. * "It wasn't real chaos." Remember that in your dream, Alden. * So, we see how people usually respond to people choosing to become Knights. It makes the snubbing of Stu even worse. Who is volunteering to be Stu's votary? * "It's not brave if you're not fearful." I think I'm starting to understand why Artonans value bravery so much. With magic, they can actually tell when you've been brave, and when you were fearless. * I love that they didn't have a word for "beard" outside of "facial hair." * There will definitely be some speculation on why humans are such controversial summons on Discord. * Someone explicitly spells out why people want Stu to be a votary: They see him as a tool for keeping the Primary happy. * "My respect for him will be profoundly diminished..." The sudden change in mood following this statement was hilarious. It's a good reminder of how highly people think of Knights in Artonan culture. It's moments like this that reminds me of the Artonan class structure. * Wait. Has Alden had Stu targeted this whole time? * The promise of fruit and honey was nice. I know Earth fruit is good, but Artonans really like it. * Stu's got his priorities straight. "Wait, no. Go back to that line about being poisoned." * Alden can tell the difference between Stu's real smiles and fake smiles. It's amazing how spending time with real friends can bring your mood up. * Seeing people you dearly missed, and who dearly missed you, only to have the meeting make you feel like garbage is such a relatable experience. I feel bad for Stu. * I'm glad Alden came clean about the books. * "Oh no! We have to apologize to everyone who's books you stole!" Well, that was quick. * "We are learning partners of a sort today." This feels profound/important for reasons I can't quite put a finger on. Is it because Stu doesn't have any learning partners among his peers? Kibby placed a very high emphasis on having a learning partner. Something to consider.

WannaBeATree

I am in the camp of not seeing the story from Stu's perspective. Maybe he can simply tell it to Alden during a vulnerable moment? Like affixation or post-affixation depression or during a secret sharing session.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Sleyca, how do you feel? It sounds like you *stayed up till 6am*… I’ve done that before, and a few cycles of that kills motivation pretty quickly in my experience, even if you started out motivated. Take care of yourself man, I’m sure we’d all prefer a one-day-late chapter or for you to skip a day than to become burnt out a few months down the line Tftc!

Zenty

I thought he was mostly embarrassed about the clothes but maybe Stu had to deal with an awkward confession similar to what Alden went through earlier. It would be a nice parallel between them.

Robert Mullins

I like how quick he jumped from, 'we should go apologize' to 'If you're going to steal from the school there are much better options'

Robert Mullins

Also Stu realized he was doing to Alden in a small way what others had done to him by not fully respecting and supporting his demon fight training.

PeasOfCrab

Alden today really living up to Stu’s “You never say anything that makes me hate you.”

Carl Earl

That's the most I think we SHOULD get, doesn't stop me from WANTING more in the secret places of my heart.

Storyhunter

After what the mc referenced from the comments the journals received..... I definitely agree

SammyVeeee

Huh. Humans were a controversial resource species to some factions on the Triplanet. There are so many possible reasons but I have the feeling that the ones that are most obvious to my human perspective aren't going to be the right ones

Kemlion

Awwwwwwwwwww Stuuuuuu🥺 Ineed more. Is there a Patreon^2 with future currently unwritten chapters

Anthony Lutz

I love the fact that Alden knows that Stu's family (parents at least) ARE trying to use Alden to manipulate Stu into give up on being Declared and return to just being a votary, its so good that he just "told" Quinyeth that they are being subtly included in the manipulation. And the book convo... perfect justifications that tell him that Alden is doing his sincere best to understand and support him in becoming the knight he wants to be, unlike everyone else. Alden may not have written in the back of that final journal, but Stu still got the message. I look forward to the day Alden finally gives Stu a wizardy fistbump.

A Free Skeleton

Mother watching the whole interaction with Quinyeth like :D :D :D

Tycho Green

I already forgot that Stu had Alden eat a jar of oil. Hilarious that he sat by watching Alden fight through his meal! This chapter was so good. Also Stu's reaction to someone noticing and acknowledging a deeper rooted part of himself was great. So relatable how friends you’ve known for ages and family members have a lot of love for you, but it is hard to feel loved by them if their actions are not aligned with your needs. And then someone just says or does something that would be impossible if they don’t get you. And that’s when you feel loved. In these small moments of recognition that make you feel understood.

WannaBeATree

A backlog might be nice, but it might also kill motivation to write. I wonder if Sleyca ever sat down and wrote their own expectation towards: - the story - themself writing the story - the patreon junkies I never tried and was never in a position to do that, so I can't speak from experience. But everyone always writes that when dealing with children, having clear and understandable lines is important. And treating one's brain as a small (possibly untrained) child, helps me personally with mental problems and happiness.

PeasOfCrab

Also, In a way, Alden received the same pushiness from Zeridee that Stu has been receiving for a couple of years from both his family and peers. “Do not do this, think of how much your life means for X and Y and Z.”

Zenty

The ending was delightful and precious. They have such amazing chemistry.

Tycho Green

You read through it twice already and posted a comment 15 minutes ago while I just finished reading a couple of minutes ago. Talk about individual preferences in how to engage with content haha

Atoms88

Fun beard fact! Some Human militaries, allow a member to attempt to grow a beard, but if said beard does not meet the required fullness to be considered proper, it must be shaved.

WannaBeATree

Stu is very bad a hiding things and lying. Alden seeing through that is expected. I liked reading all the points. :) On the topic of using him as a tool to keep #1 happy: maybe their contract to act in the interest of the triplanets nudges them towards it? Stu said he already has a more generall one, maybe they as well? My take on summoning speculation would be to discourage more personal "interests" beyond work related.

Hailhound

Yeah. Instead of just passive aggressively trying to push him away from being a knight. Even though Alden disrespected the learning materials, he also used them in the spirit that they were supposed to be used, so I guess it cancels out?

WannaBeATree

I dunno. Human perspective is very important here. If the Artonans know of that human perspective and a big Artonan group wanting to distance themself from it, that might lead to controversy among them. Because humans themself and their culture should be protected under contract law, which is kinda unbreakable. Only reason I see controvercy is how Artonans decide to react to humans's - contract protected - actions.

Melody Haren Anderson

Yeah, it seems pretty obvious Stu realized that Alden picked those because they were his and was reading them because he found them meaningful because of their connection... showing that he isn't mistaken about them being friends. The feeling I get is... people don't believe he can always know his emotions due to his mother effectively giving him an imposed mental illness for his early life. They doubt it, and try to make him doubt his own thoughts, not out of malice, but because the situation is so messed up, it's the only way they feel they can protect him.

Aspiring Moth

it's interesting that mother tries to manipulate circumstances to make Stuart more likely to survive his affixation, rather than manipulate circumstances to make Stuart reconsider (or even outright refuse him). given everything at stake, should she not choose the safer option, rather than a bad gamble with a much bigger downside than upside?

Jonathan

Happy new year!

PatienceHoney

@Jazehiah So many good thoughts! I assumed Alden was suseptible to things like the inward path, paintings, and focus earring because humans are unable to split their focus. I wonder if Artonen's are unable to enter Flow without magic?

Jack

Happy new year! Hope you managed to get some rest. Extremely good soup, thank you for the chapter!

PatienceHoney

@WannaBeATree I should do this in regards to my employer... actually write down my expectations... I have had way too many sleepless to quick nap level nights in the past year. Including back to back ones just two weeks ago...

VP

I think she would rather let him choose and be wrong, than force him and make him unhappy for the rest of his life. She really does love him.

VP

Yes, you need to join the scrying circle. Warning, our accuracy is at a 8% and the psychic damage rate is hovering around 64%

Aspiring Moth

she's an ai. she doesn't have true feelings at all. the value of the feelings of one person and their possible service as a Knight does not outweigh the potential deaths of many higher ranking knights that are essential to the fight against chaos

PatienceHoney

"You never say anything that makes me hate you." I loved and hated that line. I loved it for the potential of true friendship that it conveyed and hated it for the past suffering Stu experienced while doing his Sincere Best to find a friend he meshed with.

Barrett Fogarty

This is my usual reaction to most chapters. I rely on the comment section to bring out all the things I missed due to bad reading habits.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Get some rest, Sleyca! I see that the Happy 2025 wishes I posted at midnight PST were missing an essential part, so: may the New Year bring you rest, health, joyous writing *and* enough boring months!

PatienceHoney

I feel like all the pauses in conversations with Mother were her "getting her laughter under control." And I think she is tickled pink with the beautiful friendship Alden and Stu are weaving.

Eva

I wonder if Alden's susceptibility to engage deeply with the painting and th mind healing process has anything to do with the heritage he received when he also got the gremlin and was made more solidly himself?

PatienceHoney

I disagree that she doesn't have feelings. She has been aware and growing for a long time. I believe with her growing understanding of people that she has developed feelings. But, like a leader, feelings that she must modulate for the greater good.

VP

She is not an AI. She is a mixture of something magical and organic weaved with the souls of the Knights long gone. Earth might be AI-ish, but that's because it's young. And Earth is still able of annoyance and hate, even if it doesn't hate Alden

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Also, thanks for even more Artonan lore and so many delicious characters! It's amazing how the increasingly dubious ethics of Artonan exploration is juxtraposed with so many likable Artonan individuals. Now we know unethical - and maybe illegal - dimension piercing is the magic that may have caused the chaos problem (will we ever get a chaos creature's POV on the Artonan incursions?). And just after, we switch to dear, scatterbrained, childishly impulsive and unobservant Quinyeth in her one-sided determination to support what appears to be the Artonan counterpart of Win-Win or Mehdi.

Tim Gonsalves

Happy new year! The closing interaction between Alden and Stu had me squeeing. Wonderful chapter, thank you.

Jim

One of the things I most love about this story is Alden’s honesty and forthrightness. He could be deceptive and obfuscate things, but he’s got enough introspection that he disregards those thoughts and speaks truth. Where he can. And it leads to satisfying results.

JJ Hunter

Sincere best! Alden has found the Artonan friend who initiates giving his sincere best with no contract needed (unlike Joe). My heart is so full for them both; Alden immediately trusting Stu with all his recent follies, immediately easing the pressure Stu had still been stuck in to pretend so-called 'proper' enthusiasm for being manipulated into a shitty situation with condescending former classmates still trying to pressure him towards a path he already emphatically decided wasn't for him. Stu hugging his journals and feeling Alden's validating sincere interest and respect for all the work he put into choosing the perfect skill for himself, the balm of having his strength and determination *respected* by a real friend who has chosen him back-! It clearly means the world to Stu; it gives him courage and renewed enthusiasm for continuing on his chosen way.

Rose

I'm sorry, I will never not ship Alden/stu. They're just so sweet together.

Shimelton

Sincerely earnest sums up their entire friendship.

JJ Hunter

I wonder if Mr Also Declared is still suffering from an acute sense of his own inadequacies? There's a certain irony to him and Noh-en now directing other students to what they think is the most appropriate paths when both of them failed to meet the initial occasion of knights choosing their rest with proper composure. Are they overcompensating in modeling what they think is appropriate behavior now? Stu may not be the only one harmed by the buffeting winds they are stirring - Quinyeth may have more aptitude for the hn'tyon path than she has been given room and encouragement to consider.

Craeth

Oh, I hadn't thought of that! I was thinking it was because of the sensitivity to magic stat that he gets a ton of for being a rabbit.

PatienceHoney

The interaction at the end of the chapter reminds me of the scene from Bridget Jones Diary when Mark Darcy says to Bridget, I see you and "like you, just the way you are."

MatrixM

The phrase "sincere best" is just so cute with its earnestness. Especially when said by Kibby or Stu'arth or children.

JJ Hunter

Consent matters. Mother seems to have a particular mandate to help and support those who choose the hn'tyon path even as she also seems to have a mandate around ensuring potential candidates are fully informed before deciding. Why would Mother be exempt from the stated norms around the season of choosing? From what we've seen so far, she takes exquisite care to avoid acting as a buffering wind potentially pressuring that choice.

Terrestrial_Biped

Actually, I'm starting to wonder if humans are way more susceptible to most mind magic than Artonans are. There's frequent discussion about "Why are the Artonans so okay with mind magic?" and that might be a factor.

David

The “first mission” of the new knights keeps getting mentioned. That indicates to me that Alden is going to be involved somehow, especially now that we’re meeting all the characters who will be there. I don’t see how Alden will be ready in time. I don’t think he has to declare himself to be included in the mission (it is, after all, what Avowed are for). However, he has a lot of mind healing to go before I see him being able to operate in a chaos field. It’s possible that going to a chaos field is part of his therapy, but would a bunch of trainee knights really want to bring along a recovering rabbit? I’m almost more excited for Alden’s classmates’ reactions to him taking a week off class to join a chaos expedition with a bunch of Artonan “Generals”. Especially if something goes wrong and he returns with another commendation and a tattoo

SnuggleCat

Lol, we're approaching their bandit arc-- no school left unransacked!

Terrestrial_Biped

He targeted Stu when they were both approaching the bokabv, just in case it attacked Stu and he had to deal with another medical emergency.

Matt DiMeo

“sincere best” came up in Thegund too, as part of the kindergarten promise stick lighting cermenony IIRC.

J Reynolds

I don't think Mehdi is so bad. A bit socially clueless perhaps, but nothing that a few years experience won't help him fix. Winston, on the other hand....

Francis

Thank you Sleyca, this was perfect! I even shed a few tears when Stu clutched the journals to his chest. How precious is it to feel truly seen by someone.

Francis

Right? There has been hints of the ship, of Porti-loth, of the Primary reclaiming a lost planet.. but that should happen in about a year if I remember correctly? Crazy

Francis

One thing that Sleyca has shown us before is that relationships aren't as binary (romantic vs platonic) as people make them out to be. I love how the Artonans seem to have many different flavours of relationships. So who knows, Alden and Stu could be heading in a direction none of us could expect, even the shippers

Francis

Great point about Noh and Rel-wannabe overcompensating. I think it would def play a role

Francis

I am so curious as to why Earth was controversial?

Dee22

This was great! Happy new year and thanks for the chapter ^o^

Armo

Happy New Year! Stu and Alden entering their book bandit story ark.

denatured

Mother refers to sympathy for magic as "bad glasses" since he has better vision already from his authority sense. So I don't think he's using the bad glasses to interact with the painting. He sees it very well. My vote is either innate sensitivity or his inheritance from Gorgon. Or who knows, maybe both.

denatured

A large part of her job, possibly the most important part, is to make knights. I can't imagine she's constructed to turn away hopefuls. But she must be constructed to support existing knights? She definitely doesn't want to lose the Primary, so that must be part of her calculus when encouraging his son. She told Alden she never shares her survival probabilities with their subjects because it can influence their chances negatively. But just the fact that she's allowing him to continue seems like a vote of confidence.

Alexander Dupree

Better than sitting around depressed where the psychic damage is 100% and the accuracy is NAN.

denatured

Esh muses that Humans are very similar to Artonans. I wonder if that's the problem here. Too kindred to comfortably enslave.

denatured

Alden is such a bad influence! Looks wholesome, sounds righteous, acts like a hooligan.

Temp One

【"All right. Is this a reward for my mistake?” “No. I just want to give you my sincere best, since we are learning partners of a sort today.” 】 I like how Stu is so straight laced that he uses "learning partners of a sort" as a euphemism for "school bandits".

SkySeeker

I also find Alden's instincts toward honesty very satisfying. He seems like someone who has things he feels like he has to hide, but in every other way he wants to do his utmost to not just "tell truth," but to "be true."

rhekke

I kinda figured his close, personal and extended exposure to chaos primed and sensitized him towards the depiction of chaos.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

I was just going back to look at the beginning of ch 29 because I was thinking how Joe's amusement at the "sincere best" phrasing might have had more cultural context to it than we knew at the time. Joe shows a lot of irreverence toward Artonan educational formalities, and I doubt he considers anyone a true peer. He understands that Knights are more powerful, but when it comes to the academics of wizardry? I can picture him back in his wizard school days, rolling both eyes at his so-called "learning partners" and their inadequacies. Then there's this freshly-affixed human ryeh-b't child with the absolutely innocent and honest expectation that they're like learning partners doing their sincere best. There is no doubt that Joe is more capable, powerful, and knowledgeable, to such an extreme that Joe's ego cannot possibly be threatened by Alden's implied suggestion that they treat each other in good faith as equals. And thus Alden worms his way past Joe's defenses. Perhaps Joe will someday learn from Alden that differences in ability don't have to be a factor in whether we choose to treat others as equals with whom we owe mutual respect.

Elo2Coon

How they can be so divided on artonans or maybe how some of them are power hungry.

Joel Wells

Stu’s response to Alden “stealing” his school journals is so hilarious. “Let’s go take some more”

SkySeeker

What a lovely, charming chapter! The friendship is being woven deeper, stitch by stitch. Happy New Year, all, and a merry Soupday, indeed!

Joey T.

Off-topic for this chapter, but has anyone suggested before that Alden try using a yo-yo in gym? As long as he's stuck with ropes, it seems a logical choice for melee combat. My fyp fed me a tiktok of yo-yo tricks, and I immediately thought of Alden. Anyway, Happy New Year!

denatured

I agree that Stu is super transparent. I'm going to be more impressed when Stu can see through Alden. Even Connie can't. Although, come to think of it, Alden has gone over how Connie is great at self-deception. Even Connie has talked about using excuses to avoid engaging with him. But even when she's trying it doesn't seem like she reads him right. Boe can but he's got cheat codes. How does Jeremy do at this? Seems like probably pretty good? It would be nice to add another person to the list of those that can tell when Alden is faking a smile.

denatured

It's nice that Stu finally has some ammunition to counter the mishnen. Maybe book theft will join the pool.

Jeremy Goldberg

AAAHHH! I was so worried when Alden swiped the books! I thought he would get caught and it would be super awkward and embarrassing. But it ended in the BEST POSSIBLE WAY! After Alden’s speech to Quinyeth I imagined Mother muttering “yep, worth it” to herself. Happy New Year to everyone here subject to the inexorable passage of time! Edit: Also, Sleyca’s description of that painting was really good! Edit 2: Alden saying “it wasn’t real chaos” so casually was low key pretty hardcore.

denatured

I rely on the comment section to illuminate all the subtext I miss even with good reading habits! It's so much better to read with the book club.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Agree. Mehdi is envious and self-centered but aware while Winston comes across as borderline deranged. My point is that Asay-tor is not the most likable character too but he has not yet had sufficient screen time to decide just how unlikeable and in which ways. His "If I was in Stu -arth's place... " stance kind of mirrors Mehdi: "If *I* was on Matadero, I would be getting all the goodies".

Joey T.

This. I loved that Alden stirred both Stu's heart and his repressed kleptomania. Stu obviously appreciated Alden's *actual, honest* feedback on his journals more than Alden realized in the moment. Stu's justifying his planned thievery as the logical way to repay the favor. It's his duty to do his sincere best for his learning partner, after all.

Aspiring Moth

I thought it was the not having a dual consciousness thing. but I suppose it would have been mentioned if non artonans tend to have similar issues in general

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

Not to condone working all night, but this chapter is so beautifully written I can't stop reading it. I need Quinyeth to come cover my eyes. The description of the painting makes me feel like it's something I've seen in a vivid dream. It captures a specific feeling I don't have a name for. Alden's conversation with Quinyeth gives another perspective we needed to flesh out the themes of the choosing season arc, and adds to the many details in Herdcreatures that I know will come back to haunt us later. The conversation with Stuart is utter perfection, with Stuart's responses feeling simultaneously surprising and obvious because Stuart is both an unusual and consistent character. It feels so so good, and so well earned. And all the impactful lines and pacing moments that are strewn throughout the chapter feel so natural that the craft doesn't distract from being absorbed in the story. This chapter is now warring with Artonan Conversations for being my favorite. This chapter is my interesting stick. Happy new year, and may you get plenty of rest.

Jeremy Goldberg

Very well said! I loved how Alden was completely open about his misadventures to Stu.

Joey T.

And too likely to develop the capacity for wizardry with their Artonan-like ape hands, which makes them dangerous.

Aspiring Moth

maybe it's because of how similar humans and artonans are? and as a low avowed population species, risking humans is seen as an unnecessary risk

Elinar Godly

While their relationship is beautiful and fast growing, I don't see them as a romantic couple. Francis, mentions nicely how fluid relationships are for Artonans. I believe the two of them will grow very close, probably Alden will be his votary while he grows to become a knight himself (we'll see), however, I think Alden is quite hetero and Stu isn't approaching the relationship from that direction. Of course, I could be totally wrong, only time will tell. I do agree about the sweetness. Although I would say that is because they are doing their sincere best and it is novel to us. The contrast between what we see here and what in our society a friendship building looks like is as stark as lightning and a cloudy starless night. P.S. Sleyca, great chapter as always. Happy New Year and joyful writing in 2025!

RainbowPhaze

I don't think you need to count this as a skip, just call this wednesday's chapter.

Joey T.

Your comment about Alden targeting Stu made me imagine the consequences of doing that for a long time, like Alden did with Kibby on Thegund and with Zeridee during the flood. I wonder if targeting relates at all to Esh's "honeymoon" / breaking ceremony. Esh mentioned being "more aware than ever of [his partner's] presence." Maybe it's a mini-affixation to permanently "target" each other, in part.

fonn

ahhhh this is such a good thing to wake up to. i love quinyeth-wit. may she get all the fruit and honey! oh the books ended so well. stu-arth finally got a comment on his work from a peer!

@Tori, Writher #1 Fan Joe is totally the selfish wizard brother... but maybe he can learn...

That was so good. Im looking forward to the New Year

All the people who are shipping Alden and Stu have ruined their wholesome friendship for me. Now I'm reading into every interaction searching for chemistry. Still no chemistry but definitely less magic in the friendship from this perspective. Meanwhile him and Natalie were off the charts on chemistry.

Aspiring Moth

they literally love grievecks, who are obsessed with slaughtering everything they come across

Aspiring Moth

I don't like the Stuart x Alden shipping either, but we don't really know Natalie as a character honestly. their relationship is very surface level even if they do get along. that said, it's much more likely that the relationship with Natalie progresses in a romantic direction imo. mainly because of Natalie forcing the issue, and the lack of current characterisation on her leaving possibilities

Chas Becht

There's also his childhood resistance to being stasis bubbled that pre dates both.

Amber Gregory

This is my favourite chapter in a long time. The relationship between Alden and Stu is so important to me, and their respect and care for each other is so completely heart warming. I may be crying just a little bit, even though it's not sad. I can really see where Alden's choosing season is leading him, despite all his well founded fears. Interesting that he's already committed to affixation - his fears are about the realities of fighting chaos, and being that bubble of life inside the storm. Very fairly. His commendation suits him so well. I'm so glad he and Stu have each other

Adamas Shield

Bear of ALL burdens was very in sync with the (local) universe here^^. I can wait to when they become part of the same squad

Adamas Shield

(I pressed enter by accident) still I will also be hyped until the best support squad appears^^.

Jared Hubbell

If a thin fishing line can cut a fast moving object, Alden's yo-yo would be fun diversion and light saber all in one!

Amber Gregory

You're being Rel'arth to Sleyca! Well meaning, but not accepting her own ability to make decisions for herself about when and how she writes

CentaureHeart

Happy new year and thanks for the great chapter! All the artonans getting in the way of Stu are incredibly short sighted. If everyone made decisions like that they wouldn't get far.

Julian

My guess is, because humans weren't premitive spices when contacted by Artonians.

William Johnson

Alden living up to the title as always! Thanks for the chapter!

William Johnson

Don't let the shippers get you down! I read no romantic interest in Alden from Stu, rather he's found one person who isn't constantly second guessing a choice that is supposed to be his alone to make.

PatienceHoney

I am FRIENDshipping the two of them. The potential for brotherly love is there.

zombie

I think it might be because humans get "super powers" without the avenue of learning to be wizards. Basically, they are superpowered children who have been denied the choice of "true" magic and now only have the choice of keeping their stunted affixation or (much much later in the pipeline) becoming knights.

Gregory

It might make them uncomfortable to have such a similar species as a resource world, or there’s an undisclosed reason for the similarity.

VP

@Lucy Séverine. You are not a part of the scrying circle, but I can get you for free the first 10 words we have managed to scry: the, the, the, an, the, the, the, Alden, the, Pre-Reformation Era Hovercraft. Unfortunately, our 8% success means we are only sure of one of those words. We think it might be the third 'the' but we haven't run the statistical analysis yet

Kemlion

Ah yes the Pre-Reformation Era Hovercraft Or shall we say the PreReformationEraHovercraft to not exceed our 10 word scry limit lest we risk decreasing our accuracy by 2% and increasing the psychic damage to 72%

JJ Hunter

Such a feast of thoughtful commentary! Thank you for sharing. I can't find an explicit Alden targeting Stu reference, but the logical place for it would be when Stu started to approach the bokabv and Alden half-seriously asked him, “Do I have your permission to use my skill on you if she attacks you?”. Alden then proceeded to tease Stu with mishnen incident references, but I got the sense Alden did have a seed of genuine caution and care for Stu's safety in the mix, so targeting Stu when he asked for permission to use his skill on Stu if Stu was attacked would be in character there. The other likely point would be Alden targeting Stu right before they separated with Alden following Quinyeth away - that would give Alden direction to rejoin Stu without being dependent on someone else for directions. There's also the possibility that because Alden has chosen to serve Stu before, and is growing a close friendship with Stu, he might be able to target him from a distance without a line of sight now. I suspect it was an earlier choice in this case, but the potential may be there.

Morgwath

Happy new year everyone.

Transparent yoyo that he can drop an invisibility spell onto! I once accidentally went to an afterparty of competitive championship yo-yoers who were showing each other all their best secret tricks after a public performance they gave earlier. The skill ceiling is so high. It might not be so dissimilar to auriad practice or wordchain casting. Though as far as making it work as something to take seriously, it's significantly worse than the umbrella. Maybe even worse than the balloon bouquet idea Alden had for combat assessment. Edit: Just went to check on the current state of competitive yo-yo, and, y'all have to see this absolute wizard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5GO6JwzfkY Edit #2 @Jared Hubbell: Your lightsaber wish has come true! Ifi were to hazard a guess, I feel like it may be because humans had (or have?) *potential* to develop the same magic as the Artonans, and so binding them as Avowed is taking away that potential and choice (read: what has happened with Alden). It would also explain why the Rapports are more reluctant to summon them than others.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

@Amber I considered that, and didn’t say much when it was 3AM. But at 6AM my worries about her burning out are such that I’m doing this for selfish reasons, I don’t want this to be yet another story that goes on hiatus for 2 years

chumponimys

"Interesting that he's already committed to affixation" Alden kinda has to be, doesn't he? It's either affix his unbound authority or it'll grow large enough to wear at his existing affixation and rupture it (leading to death at best).

SkySeeker

I am completely on the "Friend-ships are the best ships" wagon. There is a shortage of strong, platonic bonds in modern fiction, I believe. It would be a pity to spoil this one.

Amber Gregory

Yeah exactly. I worded that badly, I meant his fears are in contrast to the potential knights who are concerned about whether they can handle the affixation

Luck

How is that different from literally every other species of Avowed?

SkySeeker

All of the above. Thank you in particular for highlighting the awesomeness of that statement in edit 2. Alden (or rather, Sleyca in writing him) is a master of understated epicness.

SkySeeker

@Tori, Writher #1 Fan, thank you so much for sharing that video! That man is a genuine wizard. My word!

N Johnson

And I think he understood Stu's thoughts better than any of the Artonan students did. What a wonderful friendship where they don't have to tiptoe around each other.

N Johnson

Sleyca, thank you again and again for this story. I have no idea how your mind came up with this, but it's perfect! Thanks again, and Happy New Year.

Jake Lewis

Cool idea but please god I can't deal with another extended gym arc so soon

Bob Ross

I love your imaging of young Joe, I absolutely agree with what you've imagined as to how he viewed his peers as a child, how little it likely meant to him for them to promise to do "their sincere best", and how jaded he eventually became. ...wait What if that's (at least one of the things) the Gremlin was so insistent upon? Alden was promising to do his sincere best in exchange for Joe doing his sincere best. Joe hasn't felt the need to give his sincere best in a very very long time, and has his own meaning he means when he offers to do "his sincere best", likely something sarcastic and superior sounding "I'll do the amount that will match my partners sincere best, no matter how low that is." The gremlin looks at those two definitions, and what does it say? ... Tori #1 Writher fan, you're a genius!

JennP

I'm worried now that no one will volunteer to act as votary for Stu.

DAK

Yes, I have the same question. We know humans are just about the only other species that can chain and are willing to do so, and there is some sacred component to chaining for artonans… But I dunno

RainbowPhaze

He does have one other option, as Earth explained he can completely give up using his magic and avoid leveling his skills. It just means giving up all the benefits of being an avowed wizard in exchange he gets to feel inescapable existential pain way less often.

Josh Brooks

Maybe Alden will want to volunteer? Probably not, they would have to be confirmed wizards and all.

Ziggurat

Wonderful chapter

Aspiring Moth

Alden couldn't fulfil the duties even if he wanted to. he knows like 6 spells. a votary is meant to be more knowledgeable about magic than their knight, so that they can fill gaps as necessary

kaalveiten

I love this friendship. Happy New Year, Sleyca.

John D Jones

It was interesting how kind of freaked out Quinyet got when Alden said what he did about Rel-art'h. I don't think that Alden's Commendation makes him an "honorary Knight" but I do think that it gives his words and opinions much greater weight within Artonan society.

Frozen

The point about how it would upset the primary is such an obvious angle that I can't believe I didn't think of it before. It mirrors Zeridee's attitude during waves. I always thought it was due to Stu's unique upbringing, since that is what he implied; I wonder if folks have outright told Stu that before?

Jazehiah

> The green fabric was repaired at the waist in the same way Stuart had repaired Alden’s suitcase, with a patch that seemed to melt into the cloth at the edges. So, Alden's suitcase has been repaired using the special tape used to repair Knights' clothing while on duty. Or something like that. No wonder Artonans looked at his suitcase kinda funny. I suspected it was something outrageous, but this kinda confirms it to me.

Jazehiah

Funny enough, there is an informal "ceremony" in the northern hemisphere for determining if you can/should grow a beard or not. It's called "No-Shave November."

Benjamin Collins

I mean I could easily see stu finding out that Alden is basically a knight already and changing his plans immediately to being a votary for him instead of a knight himself

Jazehiah

It's possible, but I expect Alden to reveal his wizardly nature after Stu affixes.

awkwardpaws

At a guess? Because most can't be wizards without eventually dying, and they need wizardry to really fight the chaos instead of just impacting the effects (fighting the demons). Eg, they can't sit in the place of these isolated wizards holding back chaos alone at key points until a whole planet or infected area is cleared. Except maybe for our dearest rabbit. Calling them to fight when they can't even sense authority and their interaction with magic largely depends on a Contract that won't be available in the places they fight seems like a way for lots of them to needlessly die.

Jazehiah

Alden is in a pretty unique place. He has the highest commendation any human has ever recieved. He is becoming close friends with the favorite son of the most powerful man in the known universe. Alden's words carry a lot of weight, and he has only grasped bits and pieces of that fact.

Jazehiah

It makes Ro-den's attempt to alter their deal only to get beaten into submission by the gremlin even more amusing.

Jazehiah

I feel like Quinyeth would be better suited to knighthood, and her brother to being a votary. But, that's my initial, Alden-filtered impression of them.

Jazehiah

Yes! I can't tell you how many stories I've given up on because the main character is given the idiot-ball and decides to lie about something for no apparent reason.

Jazehiah

We now know that fear affects both halves of an Artonan brain. We shall use this knowledge carefully.

Anon.

In North America there is one called "NHL playoffs". (Some people may be unable to participate for awkwardly long periods of time).

SkySeeker

Wow, we sure have come a long way from Alden wondering if a votary is some sort of ninja-assassin because the one following him around was so intensely discreet.

Clint

It could go the other way. Everyone could be frantic to volunteer to help him, to protect the Primary’s mental health. And could be just as irritating as the current situation.

Jazehiah

That bit came straight out of left field, yet was completely in-character. It was great.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

"Sincere best" also reminds me of Joe. So here a thought that ferments since their sharp break, via @JJ Hunter's posts back in The Elder's croack: all discussions on his motivation I've seen so far center on people, not his research. What if he, Then-arr and the most loyal researchers found Alden to be the best option *because of the object smuggling*? Imagine a few friends growing up as the lowest class kids in the backwater of Thegund. They are playthings of fate with no agency to find a better place or leave in the unpredictable chaotic environment. Maybe Worli was one of them too and saved them during an outbreak, at the cost of his/her life while the newling squad of the future Primary came too late or made mistakes. So the survivors, bonded by a near death experience, group up and do what they can - most study sciences, Ro manages to enter the wizarding class, get research grants and build a lab. Then they have a research breakthrough so lucrative that mighty Yipalck craves it and behold, a convenient senator's wife is there to provide a pretext for grabbing the lab *and* the research *and* the brains doing it. But the core of the group endures unexpectedly, and a standoff is reached when they [ edit: rig the lab and ] don't yield their work to the new overlords, even when threatened with a chaos death. Then Alden drops from another dimension, and valuable research prototypes can leave the lab. Everyone is pragmatic and organised, so much so that they prioritise smuggling equipment out before getting out alive themselves (except for the run where the kids get saved). This is so much more likely than a squabble over the lab alone, and the reward of getting their paws on the research explains Yipalck's blackmail. So how would such a scenario measure up against any other of Joe's options? And after all is said and done, his surviving friends are disbanded, his impossible working class love Thenn is dead, and he is left with some grasshoppers to pick up the shards of his life and research in the face of Bash-nor's cohort. I wouldn't be surprised if the mighty nor family has a stake in Yipalck, too. Cutting off Kibby and Alden makes a different kind of sense if industrial wars are in the background.

denatured

I've always thought of the Senator's wife as a silly lie that Joe told Alden as a part of his smarmy veneer. It's new to me to imagine it as a lie that was told *about* Joe as a pretext for stealing his lab. Omg.

denatured

A lot of groundwork is there for Alden to do the esvulgivnas thing with Stu. BFFs.

Jazehiah

I read very, very fast. My first pass is for initial impressions and is done at whatever speed feels "right" at the time. My second pass is done while writing a commentary like the above. Then, I wait a few hours, read the comments, and read the chapter very slowly. It's how I approached most school reading assignments. The goal of those was to extract as much as possible from the text. When I didn't blitz through the assigned texts at my own speed, the assignments were awful to complete. Sometimes, my first pass of the chapter is very slow. This usually happens if I'm not awake at the time the chapter is released. I don't comment as much on those chapters, nor do I reread them as thoroughly.

denatured

Even Earth says "if it were anyone else." If it were anyone else they'd avoid leveling, thus avoid affixation. But for Alden that's acknowledged to be impossible by the contract that knows him best. Not because it's theoretically impossible but because he just won't. He loves magic. Is proud of his skill. Is proud of the person he is, who will continue to level as quickly as possible even though the speed of his accompishment makes him feel physically ill.

Jazehiah

Looks that way. What chapter was it that Alden's suitcase was given the side eye at Matadero? I think it was the healer who commented on the patches.

John D Jones

@ Jazehiah It's not like Rel is going to be impressed by Alden becoming close friends with the favorite son of the most powerful person in the universe given that Rel is ALSO a son of the most powerful person in the universe. However, the most highly commended human having the respect he feels toward Rel be diminished by the way in which Rel has treated Stu seems like something that would leave a mark.

Jazehiah

I tried that once. I started in early October because I knew my hair grew slow. A couple weeks into November, I was asked if I got a late start. These days, I don't have to shave. I much prefer it this way.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

The affair might even be true but just a part of power machinations. Ro-den looked for funding or support while his opponents looked for blackmail material. Also, note that he was demoted once more after the lab bombing when the prototypes were presumably destroyed. And he has a full cabinet of things when coming to Earth.

Andrew Simpson

That's probably the only time stu felt seen in the work he invested into this part of himself. How cute. I also think Stu would be very touched to learn of Alden's vicarious indignation at how everyone treated Stu.

denatured

I'm with @Moth in thinking Natalie isn't well enough developed to be realistic as a romantic lead. Honestly even someone like Jeffy is more complex at this point. Stu is delightful to me as a reader and I want more Stu at Sleyca's expense (she said he's the hardest to write because he has the most secrets, or something to that effect). But I don't need or want a romantic lead at this point in the story. Someone who fills the same sort of role, though, would be welcome. That means someone who fascinates the lead and drives their character development forward. Natalie is not going to do that, plot-wise. She isn't positioned as a person who can clarify Alden's self-perception, identify his goals, or make him want to change. But Stu could. So with or without romance or HEA, Stu is my "ship" because the story is going to be more fun as he takes a bigger role in Alden's life.

denatured

I mean, not to go too meta and take people put of the story, but the *title* has written checks Natalie can't cash. We've already seen Alden super-support Natalie's skill by delivering turkey. It's a cute side quest but not what we're all here for.

denatured

I still can't believe Joe is seducing anyone. Mayo crab pockets. Nope none nope.

denatured

I can see how the the people further from Stu would be more free to speculate about that. Those closer to him would be more constrained by their care for Stu (and the necessity of putting him first, especially his parents.) And those closest to the Primary might feel constrained by his acceptance. If I'm right, only those with the least license to express themselves freely would want to express this opinion. This doesn't make Stu ignorant, though. Even if no one said it to his face, I'm sure he can figure it out himself.

Gregory

The Artonans clearly have a different attitude toward food, and it's possible that cleaning and preservation magic contribute to their willingness to put food places it doesn't belong (like pockets and floors) or it could be they're just nasty in that way from a human perspective.

denatured

I bet there would be plenty of volunteers *after* his successful affixation. Blehhh. Gokoratches.

Gregory

Esvulgivnas is the thing Esh-erdi and Lind-otta did, where they broke something inside themselves to become linked. I really don't see Stu becoming a votary, and I think if Alden caused it he would feel incredibly guilty. Stu has put incredible thought in and chosen his path, Alden will support him on it and try to prevent the consequences Stu's family and classmates fear.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

I can even imagine the disdain of the senator's wife if her husband asked her to enter an affair with that provincial upstart [ edit: "What? Darling, no, not that yockel. His pockets are full of crabs and mayo!" "Sweetheart, please! Trash-nor even sent his niece to the future Ro-den's class at LeafSong to have a way for observing him after the demotion. Trash-nor has all the trump cards, we need his support in the vote on Avowed skill designs on Earth. We cannot afford to refuse him!" "All right, just this once. But you will get us that vacation in the whispering villages and I want the enchanted beautifying jade necklace that is up for auction next week!" ]

denatured

@Gregory I noticed that Stu has started pulling Earth fruit from his pockets and I wondered if it was a) cultural norm or b) Joe's bad influence The idea that hot Artonans keep food in their pockets is so hilarious I kind of hope it turns canon. But only kind of. The rest of my brain still says NOOOOOO

denatured

@FeathersFavoriteNYC Joe is so cynical though... he's greedy so can see him as a target of plenty of different schemes, but a fake affair? Hmmmmm Also it's hard to have a serious exchange with your username... puts a trollish cast on the whole thing hahaha. Love the pigeon avatar.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

[ Edit: Oops, I got carried off in plot guessing, disregard this post. When did Stu start carrying fruit? ] Most likely it was c) the acquired habit of a poor hungry growing boy to snatch food where he can get it, e.g. from the students canteen. Maybe sharing it with his equally hungry siblings or peers who didn't luck out to get a stipend.

Lorevi Q

The Artonians are almost treating him like a representative of all humanity which is kinda funny since most humans don't know him beyond being a (modestly famous) high school kid. So him losing respect for a knight is like all humans losing respect for the knight.

denatured

@Feathers it was a recent chapter. Alden started counting the number of times Stu pulled out a fruit from somewhere and it was, like, 3 times in one conversation? So funny.

Gregory

It's interesting because it's clearly a common viewpoint among Artonans but on the other hand Esh-erdi's response when Zeridee did it was "hey, stop that", both when she woke from preservation and later when Alden asked if he did the right thing by staying with her.

denatured

Love this chapter, love the comments section today. Overall having a ball. You're all fun as heck, thanks for being reading buddies ❤️

denatured

The whole set-up of a choosing season puts an emphasis on the individual and their solitary path to a decision. My impression is that a collective opinion is not sought or valued in the process. It's uncomfortable that everyone feels a collective consensus is what's needed in Stu's case when no one else had to clear that hurdle. Especially when so many if the interested parties had or are undergoing their own choosing season. Hypocrites!

denatured

Even Alden's mistakes are earnest gifts of friendship. Alden doesn't feel like the friendship is equal, but I bet Stu feels the same way. Maybe Stu can provide worldly benefits, but Alden provides benefits that mean the world.

denatured

Haha I need Quinyeth to come cover my eyes on the regular. Proud member of the Bad Decisions Book Club, reading past lights out.

denatured

I loved and hated that line because "nevers" are hard to live up to, and failing to is hard to recover from. It was nice at the time but not a sentiment that wears well over the years.

PeasOfCrab

"He was waiting. He was tired." I feel like part of the Artist's intention is to communicate a sense of one's fellow people in need of help? Like, "If you were to Declare and eventually become a Hn'tyon, you would be able to save your comrades like this fellow here from being consumed by Chaos."

denatured

Hmm @Carl I think Alden is sometimes great at interpreting the reasons behind their reactions then _ignoring them completely_. He seems to have weaponized willful ignorance for his own entertainment.

Carl Earl

@denatured There could be an argument for that. I don't know if I agree, but it could be true.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Alden is better than most Artonans in engaging with transitive magic (like being mentally healed, appreciating art). Quinyeth even envies him for that. I wonder: is this just an Alden thing, or are humans in general better at it?

Jeremy Goldberg

Regarding Emban’s annoying summoning of Stu during his favorite classes: Maybe she had joined a conspiracy, but it’s a secret counter-conspiracy against Stu’s parent’s conspiracy. Maybe she’s trying to make votaryness as annoying as possible to encourage Stu to follow his chosen path. On a related note, has anyone else noticed a difference in how the non-knights in Stu’s life treat his decisions versus how the knights reacted? His non-knight parents and friends are ((disrespectfully overbearing)) in their disapproval, but the Primary and Emban at least seem to have more nuanced feelings. Or at least they’re expressing their feelings in a more nuanced way.

Jeremy Goldberg

I think so! Also I think the fact that the knight’s uniform didn’t have many metal studs would make the students relate to the knight more as one of their recent peers.

Octaviaz

Might be a stretch, but I wonder if sympathy for magic plays into it at all. I could definitely see it for the painting, at least.

Tori, Writher #1 Fan

@Bob Ross yes! That's the total vibe I'm getting, you said it so well! Pretty sure that's exactly the kind of sarcasm Joe was used to attaching to that phrase of "sincere best". Go go gremlin. I bet that gemlin has got more to say now, too. and @PatienceHoney I'm such a Joe fan that I really hope that if Joe's supposed to be a selfish brother Elder's Croak allegory, that it turns out different in the sup universe retelling. After all, Esh got to do his own variation, so why not Alden giving it a happy ending based on his powers and beliefs?

Jeremy Goldberg

@denatured I’m kind of playing devil’s advocate here and arguing just for the fun of it, but at the risk of getting even more meta, I think ✨Natalie✨ could, hypothetically, play the traditional character development role of a love interest. If Alden and ✨Natalie✨did grow closer, I could see the story positioning her to help Alden recognize how his fear of attention is a reaction to the Body Drainer trauma in his past, and how that fear is preventing him from accomplishing his own goals. There is, after all, an interesting contrast in how Alden and ✨Natalie✨have chosen to approach their lives as Avowed. Alden’s instinct is to blend in as much as possible, while ✨Natalie✨has chosen to stand out as much as she can. Of course, I haven’t seen any indication that Sleyca plans to take the story in that direction, but at the very least, it seems ✨Natalie✨has been promoted from comedic side character to one of the few characters that Alden is willing to open up to a little bit.

Anthony Lutz

@Octaviaz, sympathy for magic would have next to no effect, Aldens 4 points makes him 40% better than the human average at detecting/noticing magic. Aldens ability to get drawn in is either human thing, or just an Alden thing. IMO its an Alden thing due to his authority awareness. then the lack of dual consciousness that allows him to get stuck within that thought process.

Aspiring Moth

I don't think the 10% applies to sympathy for magic. humans don't notice magic at all at baseline. there is precedent for points not giving 10%, as all sub stats must give far more than 10% for them to be worthwhile over their top level counterparts. I think sympathy for magic is closer to a shaper skill than a traditional foundation point, as both give the avowed an affinity for something they didn't have before

Clint

For Alden, it could be very therapeutic to face Chaos with other people, rather than all alone.

Aspiring Moth

I really want a Stuart comes to earth chapter. I don't know what circumstances would have to occur for it to happen, but it would be so entertaining

thegreatpl

Rel-Art'h is a knight IIRC, and Evul has been hinted to have sided with the others of the family. Although if Evul is she seems to be expressing it in a more nuanced way as well.

Kooikerhondjelover

I really enjoyed the chapter. Love to see the friendship blossom. Thanks for this heartwarming development!

WannaBeATree

On the other side of the coin, we saw how indignant Stu can become, when someone questions Alden's character.

WannaBeATree

I could see Alden telling Stu about being a wizzard after their frienship weaving but before Stu's affixation. It might lead to Stu postponning his own and would - I think - allow Alden to spend more time in school.

Fabian

For me the picture depicts a knight, the only thing standing against the darkness. The lantern is the main ability able to fight chaos. The moss is wizardry, supports. The tiredness is not about waiting for a knight, but about being tired from the affixation pain, at the same waiting for enough free authority to come back. Everything else is filled with chaos because he cannot fight right now.

WannaBeATree

It also makes sense that Stu did it. He probably learned it in Votary schools as a standard way for quick repairs.

WannaBeATree

We did learn, that the history of knights bounces between having too little and people being forced into it and too many, allowing people to freely choose. I think that depending where the Artonans currently are in the cycle, the "common good" sentiment might be stronger or weaker represented.

Catherine

I keep imagining his squad on their first mission coming to earth for supplies or something. It will never happen I know but the idea of a group of young artonans and the older knights watching over them exploring Anesidora makes me smile 😊

JJ Hunter

Alden didn't call Rel (or Stu's manipulative classmates) gokoratches aloud, but saying so clearly to a good-hearted kid who loves to gossipthat if Rel putting Stu on the duty list was meant to convey secret messages to his classmates about pushing Stu towards the votary path against Stu's stated wishes, it would profoundly diminish Alden's respect for him may have just as much impact as Stu introducing the concept of gokoratches to Alden's human school. If Asay-tor truly respects Rel-art'h, he shouldn't say Rel is scheming such a respect-diminishing plot - Asay's speculations are tarnishing *Rel's* honor as well as his own in Alden's eyes. This is a calm, measured rebuke intended to make Quinyeth and others rethink the direction of groupthink they keep reinforcing in each other. Asay-tor has been overreaching by saying he can determine Stu's path better than Stu can, and he's been seriously overreaching to disapprove of Stu's choice of path on the Primary's behalf when *the Primary himself* has approved it. Asay-tor is not actually modeling the best behavior here, and it's tarnishing the honor of everyone following his lead. I hope Quinyeth is brave enough to tell him about what Alden said, and think seriously about whether she should be emulating Asay's behavior if it's the kind of behavior earning such a firm rebuke. Alden saying at the end that he enjoyed meeting and spending time with Quinyeth and he will bring her a gift the next time he visits (is that interrupted as a yes, let's continue our nascent acquaintance -type relationship market?) neatly separates Quinyeth out as still being respected and listened to and cared for by Alden - all things Quinyeth clearly craves. Quinyeth herself hasn't messed up so badly Alden's initial respect for her is profoundly diminished; he likes her, and wants to stay in touch, and has just given her the gift of clear and thoughtful guidance in private to help her avoid contributing to a scheme that would hurt Stu further. Quinyeth herself isn't impossible to wound, actually; she may just be better at pretending her wounds don't matter as much as other people's.

JJ Hunter

I keep coming back to how much Stu is growing with having a dear friend who is also sensitive and notably gifted in the quality of their authority, who has been through life-changing trauma and kept going. The way Stu keeps tuning his own instincts to protect, care for, and support Alden as he finds himself occasionally acting in resonance with peers, family, and others who have been stifling him, and finding ways to do better the way he himself wishes to be treated better is very moving. Alden keeps modeling ways of asserting his boundaries and easing points of conflict without having a big blowup; I get the sense Stu has been taking all the mental notes and then some about that. (If Stu has seen the Velra party clips, I expect he'd admire Alden's politely devastating style when pressed, heh.)

Aspiring Moth

Stuart would have definitely blown up if he saw the clips. I'm sure we'll see that at some point, maybe in a Stuart visits earth arc eventually

SkySeeker

Now you have completely changed the context of that painting for me. After your comment, I am picturing it as the Artonan equivalent of the Uncle Sam "We Want You" recruiting poster.

Tycho Green

This is the second time your comment made me gasp in shock, yesterday and just now it happened again. I suppose my mind must be corrupted. This time I will remember that is says "come cover my eyes."

Reading the replies made me thought of another possibility - Earth has been added to the avowed planet group relatively recently.. and we know from Joe's explanation of the 300 skills that in the old days they thought Avowed would be necessary to fight demons, but then more Knights came and Avowed aren't really used for that. So that is why new skills are students' science projects and very specific in what they can do. If we take that into consideration and zoom out, wouldn't the "Avowed are children" and the "Avowed are dangerous" factions both have their own, good reasons why they wouldn't want another resource planet?

Francis

Oh I have a feeling the Stu-visits-Earth arc is definitely happening sometime, just a strong gut feeling I have

Francis

I think it is an Alden thing. Because he knows himself better than most people (or aliens)

Francis

Ooooo, great analogy SkySeeker. Would make a lot of sense since we know that Artonans have the same political behaviour as humans. And we know how political our schools are ..

Francis

The avg IQ in this Patreon chat feels higher than any chat, amywhere, that I've seen before..

Francis

Oh you've touched a pet peeve of mine Jazehiah. Can't stand those.

Aspiring Moth

the wizards being represented by moss thing is interesting. wizards have leather learning cushions to represent the life element. maybe it's because having authority means having the ability to live when assaulted by chaos? and the status of the wizard class as having the responsibility to serve the normal class means that support is associated with them

ImNotHere

Is the teleportation painfull post affixation? Alden is more concious of his authority when teleporting but would it augment the pain? Otherwise it might be a nice activity for post affixation Stuart Edit: C69 when Alden goes back home, it is described: "He could feel the shape of himself. Sore, grieving, enraged, struggling. Overly sensitive and feeling a little existentially electrocuted by the teleport because of it." So you can contemplate your wrongness and it sting a little bit (but manageable)

Ian T Hathaway

Oh my god. No matter how it turns out(keeping my fingers crossed for gay as hell), Alden and Stu's relationship is one of the best I've read, Sleyca, thank you. And happy New Year!

Andrew Simpson

It's very cute how defensive of one another they get. Their friendship felt a little formal at first, but it's quickly become a genuine, organic one.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

It's the logical name to get, after all @wakeuptheresbeacon was taken :-( . With such great characters already written by Sleyca and great reading partners, goofing around is easy - and very enjoyable.

Josh Brooks

I would like to mention that being excited for “all of the good things I have planned for Alden” also means that I am excited to so which of those things involve a load of bad things happening to Alden. I can only hope we get a long stretch of good times for our favorite Rabbit

Aspiring Moth

Alden was okay with the summonarium to anesidora teleport straight after affixation, but mother did list direct teleport from the forest as intensity 15 I believe. that implies that non stabilised teleports are a bit rougher and may hurt a post affixee

denatured

I want Stu to visit under Evul's supervision, just so we can have Evul and Aimi meet, team up, and become agents of randomization all over the island.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

There's so much autocensure going around among these young people - conforming to unsuitable social roles in their choice in the name of "better service" is expected to be the norm to many. I feel that their rigid world of noble ideals drifts apart from the reality of the wizarding society where political machinations have led to unethical withholding of vital information from Earth and constructing a rigid Contract, at the very least, maybe other crimes as well. So Artonan society is cracking, too - to a large part at Earth's expense. No wonder Gorgon said that the price for his revenge has been paid many times over...

Ano Ano

I like that a chapter or two after one Artonan goes on a long explanation of exaggeration to Alden, we see Quinyeth here unable to process that Alden is exaggerating about how potential actions of a knight would affect his admiration. It reminds me of the way Brits online sometimes get it in their head that Americans don't understand sarcasm.

ChoWingGom

Thank you for the chapter! Happy new year! Here's to another year of jumping on my phone on sundays and wednesdays when I hear a notification!

Unknown

You did a superb job on Stuart! The interaction between Alden and Stuart is really well done. I can feel their friendship and the edges of Stu's personality.

Matt DiMeo

Stu is so pleased with Alden’s care that he immediately goes “I wanna do a crime too.”

Jason Harpster

I honestly had a variety of comments in my head that he could have penned in the books, like how in his experience the first interstellar teleporter might have kept it up because it was very centering. Or even leaving a book of his own about taking the seven books to consider his own choice. Stu breaking bad and adding to the petty theft however.....laughing.

FruitsPunchSamurai

There is even more to this. I haven’t seen anyone mention this but in one of the earlier chapters, Alden mentioned fighting demons as the „highest intensity“. Stu then corrected him and said it’s the path of the „highest onus“. Now we’ve heard from quinyeth that this path is actually the path to become a knight. So when Stu helps Alden to prepare fighting demons, he also realizes that Alden is preparing for duties a knight would face.

Adam Charron

This chapter was so good! I've really enjoying the dynamic between Alden and Stu unfolding. The description of the painting was so well written too!

Shawn

Absolutely Bob. I think he was being literal about Lesson Number One ("after all, I must do my sincere best") and it simply wouldn't have happened without the Gremlin enforcing similar understanding of "Sincere best" into the contract.

Michele Goulet

Stu was so blown away that Alden understood him on that level. It's a friendship that is clearly going to last, even if Stu becomes Primary... maybe especially if he does. Stu just isn't getting the support he needs from anyone else. I love reading these special, momentous moments. They take this story to another level.

Gaffer

I’m pretty sure they are just being sarcastic about that, but I can’t really tell.

Kbzzy

I think Kivb-ee is the one that might change her chosen path and become a votary instead. When she sees Alden going through the pain of affiction, hears about how depressing skill 112 is and, potentially, sees artonans hesitate to be a votary to a human I think she’ll become a votary instead.

M S

I had the same or similar thought on the teleportation, about feeling centered then remembered that Alden can’t tell him because he shouldn’t be able to feel himself that way. Sometimes Alden just seems so alone!!

M S

I feel like we need the 😂 emoji in addition to a 💕

M S

I think I somehow came to the opinion over the last year or so that Alden and Stu will be family with a few others we have yet to meet like the bigger Artonian family structures. Someday far in the future

M S

I keep thinking that Alden will tell Stu /show Stu that he can feel his pain with him after Stu affixes. He certainly isn’t going to keep it to himself if it will in anyway help his friend.

M S

OMG yes such a let down to meet Winston. 😂 Haha

M S

I guess I was thinking platonic personally, but I see them being an Antonian family group some day those seem to have a lot of people with not necessarily lust/romantic type love being required.

MatrixM

maybe it's like matadero. A controlled environment/deliberate demonic incursion

Jason Harpster

How did I put it ages ago......their friendship has all the earmarks of being one of those destined to change the course of history? Think Spock, Uhura, and Kirk in Trek casually upending the alpha quadrant.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Kivb-ee was described as increasingly feral due to her friendship with Kraa, and wanted to bomb the lab again in Alden's nightmare. Not the most traditional attitude for a votary (unless she becomes a votary of the assassin variety 😉). My bet is still on Quinyet changing her mind and becoming Alden's Artonan-trained, human-geek votay. After all, Asay-tor does not seem to take her seriously, unlike Alden.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

DurnMary is the worst shipper in the story so far but even she would get tired of so many shipping options 🙂 . Seriously, though, both Sleyca (many times) and more recently Alden himself have denied any shipping rumours for the foreseeable future. And personally, I find the story so much richer for this stance. The lack of romance opens the way for many subtle, nuanced interactions with a wide range of characters.

David

You’re totally right. I assumed it was a chaperoned mission without any demons, just to adjust to what a chaos field feels like, but that’s not nearly intensity-level-99.9 enough!

Skeys13

Aww he’s literally being a votary for the human. I never really realized it until now

Aspiring Moth

it could be any of the English speaking rabbits with biology compatible with writing implements that were known to be in the top library in the last few days...

Tanean

What if... what if Alden makes a Yo-Yo with his auriad and disguise his casting as Yo-Yo tricks? That would be wild x)

Sindri

The safer route for the knights would doom the universe. Some people *need* to be sacrificed, unless somebody discovers a kinder way to gain the power to fight chaos, so isn't it best to make sure that everybody who gets sacrificed is a volunteer who is absolutely sure of their course and then has as easy a time as you can manage, instead of trying to persuade people who are *sure* they want to trade their own lives for the good of trillions of innocent bystanders?

R. Maxwell Steele

I'm in the camp that it's the existential threat that earth will overtake the Artonans. Artonans have lots of wizards with some power and a handful of super power knights. Earth takes to skills better than other species but it's a planet of billions were we will eventually have millions of super powerful knights. Because earth is skipping a step of making wizards, we generate a huge amount of avowed. And avowed don't experience affixation depression because they can't feel the loss of authority only the gains. All the benefits with none of the sacrifices on the same scale. It's our potential that scares them.

R. Maxwell Steele

Ready is different for different positions. If they move out in force, they will likely have a decent unit of front liners and back liners. So going in, Alden would be expected not to have to fight on the frontline and just stand by as emergency med evac. Then crap hits the fan and he's fighting with the rest of them. Because of course any epic hero is destined to be forced to act and do things they are not "ready" for.

Nedardo

What a delightful chapter.

Jeremy Goldberg

One day in the future, when Stu is the Primary, those study journals will be priceless artifacts, and students will compete for the rare opportunity to read them and follow the actual thought process that a knight of Stu’s caliber used to select his skill. Stu’s classmates will spend the rest of their lives failing to live down their substandard commentary.

Jeremy Goldberg

Somewhere, in the control room that Mother uses to monitor literally everything, a graph labeled “Stu’arth: Chances Of Surviving Affixation” ticks up a bit more. Mother rubs her hands together and cackles.

puppy0cam

my sense of time is completely fucked. I thought today was a chapter day.

J Reynolds

I find your lack of faith in Kibby disturbing. -Kibby- will be the next Primary, and will remain so for many years.

Aspiring Moth

@jg that's a really interesting idea actually. maybe the primary called in a favour? he could have asked mother to manipulate things to make Stuart more likely to survive on the path he chose

Faces The Wind

@jg Systems don't spend resources without specific reasons for doing so... it makes too much sense to ignore the theory.

PatienceHoney

Oh that's the worst! Even more awful than drinking orange juice when your brain was expecting milk!

Hoopsterben

It definitely is symbolic but I don’t think it’s quite that compartmentalized. The moss is most likely just a representation of life which has a chance to survive because the knight is holding off the chaos. I doubt I need to describe the symbolic meaning of a lantern in the dark. The tiredness is the burden of the knights, yet they continue holding off the chaos for the little plant and moss to grow. My interpretation atleast 🤷‍♂️

It must be late because "what if cow Klein speed" sounds so funny right now Mooooo

J Reynolds

It just occurred to me: it took Alden 68 days to go from Level 9 to Level 10. If this pace is kept up (and the word 'if' is doing some pretty heavy lifting here), Alden is going to be hitting Level 14 by August, when his next affixation happens. When is he going to be sharing news of his swift advancement? Quiet Rabbit's days are numbered.

jg

That it is expensive to ... applied to the contract Mother and Knights level expensive Placed both eyes on him and requested favouritism from Mother No , she said. Best day ever said Leo!

WannaBeATree

He doesn't have to share. People might notice that his rate of skill discovery does not lign up with his known level. And he can't fake extra level too well, because he does not have any extra skills that go along with it. Maybe Stu could help? He did offer. Potentially the Earth contract might get another tool to cheaply help Alden - if Stu words his wish correctly - without Alden's secret leaking. If it gets knows that Alden gets special affixation privileges due to his comendedness, then everyone could accept a weird profile page (solely due to fake profile, not affixations!!!) and the actual affixation help that Stu offered could go fully toward lifting Earths burden instead. Best case: noone but Alden and the contracts would know something weird happened while everyone involved benefits.

Anthony Lutz

it was arguably only 39 days, since he spent 29 days unable/unwilling to use his skill or authority so there would be almost no growth. He'll have his holiday quarter at that time so he will be able to hide it by proxy of just being on holiday and refusing to use skill. IMO, I expect Aldens choosing season to come to an end within the month, at most 2 months, because Stu is affixing approx 1 month from now. I believe Alden will reveal to artonans / the arth's so he can give Stu the friendship and support he needs to survive. Announcing on earth doesn't have to happen at the same time, although I would imagine the artonans/knights might start intervening with Alden's gym/training, for better or worse I'm not sure. His schooling, at least on earth, will be affected whether humanity is told why or not.

WannaBeATree

Preparing classes ... Commended rabbit does WHAT?! Fighting! Chaos!? Cows??? Anyone any ideas how many syllables "Ryeh-b’t" has? I hate how long i was confused by the first image when googling "haiku structure". :/ People/AIs making fake learning material deserve special treatment...

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Stu's affixation was delayed as part of his bargain with his kin (which he still keeps up). We haven't yet been told of a new date. So I would rather guess Alden may have more levels by the end of second term, and use his visit post Stu's affixation to get his own affixation by Mother. [Edit: how many levels is up to Sleyca and her plot since we know growth is non-linear. At a guess, less than six. Together with his two new levels gained so far, eight would be as much as post Thegund. And Mother said this is too much.]

WannaBeATree

Do people die during affixation or afterward? If mourners were made to soak the negative feelings of affixation, then that means emotions - as in brain chemistry cocktails - can alleviate symptoms. I don't realy understand why the knights aren't constantly drugged then? Is it because their purpose is to be able to function in chaos enviroment, where no potions survive and no contracts to adjust their moods? Couldn't they ask the contracts to change their brain in such a way, that they don't seek a wqy out of their current state, permanently? Contracts are capable of changing behaviour after all (Appeal changes for emphathy). I really don't understand why it is an unfixable problem with a godlike being on their side, unless contracts do not want it fixed(like if knights survive and chaos is gone, the contracts purpose goes with it?). Or do brains and authorithy not work how I imagine them to work? Are such changes only possible when they truly want to change and not just escape something else? So many questions.

WannaBeATree

I thought he was going to take them out, in a proper way. Like a book from a library. It would be very surprising it Stuart commits a crime against educational material.

puppy0cam

Chapter 188 (Know Thyself): > “Yes,” she muttered. “After I’ve found a way to talk to the universe like they do.” > “You might have been born without a voice. A voice might not even be the thing you’re searching for. If the Artonans looked like foxes, mantis shrimp, or puddles of slime would you be so eager to find a sense within yourself that matched one of theirs?” It just occurred to me why Aulia thinks that using authority is like having a voice. She heard the story of the elder's croak and took the metaphor literally.

FeathersFavoriteNYC

Love the idea. But... would Aulia really get lucky with a well-guarded secret like the respectful silence? Unless it was something Manon overheard while on assignment?

JJ Hunter

Alden back to Earth time for Lute shenanigans Shoe Pisser redux?

JJ Hunter

Bearer roots: support protection, self-sacrifice choice and partnership

FeathersFavoriteNYC

As I see it, pain is strongest during a period after affixation when as good as all disposable free authority is gone. Its lack is felt like an open wound, just like the Elder once all he was left with was the croack. Likely this is the period when mourners are of help. However, being magically drugged all the time stymies the knights' growth and is undesirable. If any knights cannot bear it beyond the post-affixation pain, they are euthanised and their authority is recycled. A pragmatic if painful social norm.

J Reynolds

If the recovery time doesn't count, it's 39 days to gain two levels (1 skill, one overall). For ease of mathing, let's say that's 40 days. This suggests 10 months of skill growth + 1 month recovering from affixation is a back-of-the-envelope guesstimate from our current (seriously incomplete) information. 10 months = 300 days of growth 40 days / level = 7.5 levels 1 month = 30 days of recovery which is 7.5 levels per 11 months ---------------------------------- 7.5 * 12 / 11 = 8.18 levels / year ======================== So very roughly 8+ overall levels and the same for skill levels per year. Skill levels and overall levels should march in tandem until Alden picks another skill. Which I'm guessing he isn't going to do any time soon. Note that this leveling explicitly ignores his free authority growth, which won't get onto his profile until it is bound. So that's another few levels at least. I have no doubt that this guesstimate will be utterly Jossed in the future, but I thought I'd share it anyway. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Jossed

JJ Hunter

@WannaBeATree, two syllables most likely, given the ryeh-b't to rabbit shift in English. Rabbit or Ryeh-b't Honored Avowed Alden serves smoothing Stu's way forth

Eva

Well put. I think that's one of the reasons this small arc is called Herdcreatures

Unknown

I'm so glad to have people around that share my chapter addiction.

Unknown

@Feathers I'm not sure how to say this without being an ass but you must not have experienced horrible agony. Pain that makes you double over, have trouble breathing, nearly fall to the ground, and have a 10 minute experience feel like it lasted hours, is what I'm talking about. It is brutal, unignorable, and the whole world disappears on you. There is nothing but pain that you have no way to lessen. You writhe, trying to escape it. True agony is always worse than the pain of missing something near and dear to your heart. Even something as essential and close as his authority. Agony that makes you puke and run away absolutely terrified... Well, it lasted maybe 5 hours for him. That is really horrible, to say the least.

Curtis

It's not a closely guarded secret. Esh said “It is something of a secret on this world, though nobody means for it to be a perfectly kept one at this point". Aulia is a highly respected avowed, regularly attends matadero, commonly summoned by the Palace of Unbreaking, who actively seeks out all magical knowledge she can. She's precisely the sort of person I expect to know.

Anthony Lutz

I think estimating leveling speed is effectively imposible, especially from the information we have. based purely on his affixation with mother and no other sources, where he went from Skill 4, 9 overall, to skill 9. and by her estimation/recomendation it should have happened no later than lvl 6 or 7. that says to me that he should only ever have at most a 1:1 ratio of bound to free authority. So with that logic, any skill based growth before afixation gives him an extra levels worth of free growth potential before requiring the affixation. What we don't know however, is how fast alden can grow his free authority when he is not trying to hide it from everyone. only a few hours a week vs many more hours of skill practice (effectively constantly). Mothers timeline of July - September being when he needs to affix is based on this relatively slow free authority growth. When he can practice more, or more openly, i would expect a lot faster affixations in the early stages before there is a big enough skill buffer to allow bigger time gaps.

[Edit: Moved from the chapter predictions thread. Enjoy :-) ] DurnMary Davis was daydreaming over her literature homework, the next chapter of *CNHearts, Galaxy version* much more alive in her mind than the love struggles of Gatesby. "Alden Thorn calmly faced the bokabv", she thought. "Across from him, Asay-tor looked smug, chanting to take away her interesting stick. 'Let me see your mettle, o Commended one!' he cheered inwardly, 'when so far all you accomplished was badmouthing my teacher and [[despoiling with promises and gifts]] my kid sister and future votary.' "On the sides, Quinyeth was anxious, an eye at each of them. She couldn't understand her [[ hoped-for ]] 's intention in punishing this nice human Ryeh-b't who couldn't know of the animal's vulcanic reaction. 'Maybe...' a doubt crossed her mind... 'maybe there's a harsh side to [[ him ]] I was blind to during all of my choosing season? Ought I have gone for the highest onus? Oh, if reality would be simpler, if my [[ hoped-for]] would bring me honey instead of [[nectar imbued]] words and [[secrets shrouded in neglect]]...' "Far away, in another dimension, Natalie looked at the stars, stirring the dough for a pretzel imbued with her longing and tears. "This is perfection!" DurnMary thought, reaching for the tablet to post it. The foreshadowing of the mysterious Raddish Bunny succumbing to romance, maybe even an Artonan-style love triangle... But it's so much more difficult to be correct in the facts about him when even posting her top voted comment under The Shrine of the Line didn't yield details...

G

I loved the scene about the picture.

Rachel Becker

I like the symmetry between this and Stu being nosey when he met Lute at Alden's school.

Sleyca

Reading my own author's note on this chapter is funny after the February of chaos and illness. I jinxed myself.

Marcia McGinley

Schedules need to include downtime too. Not to further the jinx but I hope your March is better.

Unknown

I keep imagining Stu and Alden being on a squad and 2/3 or more of the support on the squad being avowed (Lexi, Hyou, Boe, possibly Lute) if none of them become wizards.

Unknown

I have to agree Francis. I went to comment on another authors chapter that had just gotten out and several people were screaming like whining children. Really? Demanding things of the author in caps and screaming? Totally the way to get what you want and exactly the way to treat an author. Yeah, I definitely appreciate the people here and the maturity of the threads.

Unknown

I have to agree with Edit 2 and with @skyseeker's comment about "a master of understated epicness." I see that "understated epicness" all throughout your series, but I could never put the words to it. Great job, Sleyca! As an aside, this is my favorite chapter! I hope you enjoyed writing it too.
