A lit candle, clean hands, a quiet tune that was almost “Jingle Bells” played by the twitch of his fingers against air. One smashed marshmallow. A pillow tumbling into more pillows after being pummeled by an invisible, square-shaped punch. The memory of the light that had once filled this room becoming real light that shone on a blade-shaped leaf—still green after all these days.

Alden held the spell, striving for another ten seconds while the feeling of resistance grew. If the first spells he’d cast tonight had been like diving into water and feeling it part for him, then this was like swimming with tired muscles as the water thickened and hardened and, finally, refused to give way.

The light dimmed, then vanished. He let his auriad fall loose and enjoyed the way it settled around his wrist.

Midnight casting done.

He stood from his cushion and carried Whan-tel’s Art and his leaf over to his desk. He sat there, flipping through pages by lamplight, resisting the urge to put on his study earring this late at night.

What next?

The flashlight spell wasn’t mastered, but he was itching to add more to his casting list.

At the end of the book, there was a summoning spell. Just a basic one—line of sight, bring that object to me. The thing the caster summoned would travel toward one waiting hand while the other held the auriad.

Basic. But difficult.

He’d often entertained the idea of leaving this one for last, as a prize for reaching the end of the book. But tonight that sounded like a long time to wait for such a cool new spell.

“Maybe you’re a prize for beating Winston,” he murmured.

He was almost finished reading the first page of instructions when Stuart called.

Alden slipped his leaf back into place as a bookmark, and dropped Whan-tel’s Art into his desk drawer. Shoving his auriad up his arm almost to his shoulder so that it was hidden by the sleeve of his T-shirt, he looked around the bedroom like there might be more signs of magic going on that he’d forgotten. But it was only scattered pillows and a cedar-scented candle burning by the learning cushion.

One long breath to collect his thoughts.

He’d been expecting this call and worrying about it in the back of his mind, even though the battle with Winston had been won and hanging out at the diner had been so much fun and casting spells made him feel like a badass who could tell the universe what to do if he wanted.

Last day of Welcome End for Stuart, and I left him with who knows what fallout from my encounter with Emban-art’h this morning.

Please don’t have had a horrible afternoon because of me. Please don’t have been embroiled in even more family drama because I talked to your cousins.

He answered the call, and Stuart appeared. He was stepping out of the elevator that carried people down to the siblinghold’s underground floors. He looked calm. There was even a small smile on his face.

The call with his father must have gone well. And Emban must not have complained about me to him. Good! I didn’t cause problems after all!

“Are you in the supply library?” Alden asked.

“No. This is the manuscript library.” He turned so that Alden could see more of the room.

Stuart stood in a lighted area with comfortable-looking chairs, small tables, and something that looked like an easel. Shelves surrounded the seating, the gaps in them leading into dark corridors of more shelving.

“It’s not only manuscripts, though. We also keep art on this floor, memories, some learning tools…. You <<quarreled>> with Emban about me this morning.”

Alden’s relief vanished, along with his urge to ask to see what kinds of books the art’hs had. He slumped back in his chair. “I’m a horrible guest.”

“I overheard the samefaces telling Rel about it. You said it was sad that I’d spent all of Welcome End with you instead of my family and childhood companions. Emban said you would never understand the shades of my sadness as well as my family does. Then you said my family couldn’t tell the difference between helping me and being unkind to me. You called them mean-mean.”

He had distilled the argument in a different way than Alden would have, but the identical twins had obviously conveyed the whole thing to Rel-art’h.

“I’m sorry I lost my temper. Especially at her. Especially today. If I made things hard for you—”

“She was wrong,” Stuart said lightly, dropping into a chair and tapping a statuette on the table beside it. It was in the shape of a bird resting on a branch—a panpi’i, Alden guessed—and it glowed at the touch.

“My family has known me longer, but when it comes to understanding me, I don’t think they have as much of an advantage as Emban thinks. My life has been very different from theirs. And I hope that your <<tactic>> is superior to theirs because I like it much more.”

“My tactic for understanding…do you mean the tactic of listening to you and believing what you say about yourself?”

“Yes. That one. More people should attempt it.”

Alden returned his smile. “You’re in a good mood. I was afraid I’d ruined your day.”

“I had a chance to talk to Father alone,” said Stuart. “It was a comfort. And even if our conversation was a brief one, he said things that will last long in my thoughts. I’ll tell you some of what we talked about after I’ve kept it as my own for a time.”

“I’d like that.”

“You failed at your tactic today, though. That’s why you had a quarrel with Emban.”

“I didn’t believe you about something?” Alden asked.

“You don’t seem to believe me about you. It’s my fault in part. I have been mentioning the other declared often…and wishing they would welcome my company. But I’m sure I must have conveyed how much I enjoy your presence just as many times. Why would you tell Emban my weekend was really sad when we stole the wevvi cart together and I showed you the patient creatures?”

“Of course it was a great weekend. I was just thinking…”

The look Stuart gave him then was irritated. “Don’t tell people your company is inferior to that of declared I rarely speak to these days. Tell them the opposite. I call you my friend.”

“Oh,” said Alden. “Okay. I will.”

Stuart crossed his legs and settled deeper into his chair. “How was your day?”

“It was good. I dueled Winston—the person I told you I was practicing for.”

“I remember the names of people you like and dislike. May I watch the duel?”

“I can’t wait to show it to you. It’s not as exciting as discovering something new about my skill, but it’s still me using what I already know in a new way. Winston wasn’t as good of an opponent as he could have been, but I tried the same maneuver out on some of the others afterward and learned a few things from them.” He accessed the gym footage.

“Alden, there will be more.”

Alden turned his attention back to the call and saw Stuart watching him closely.

“More?”

“When you’ve searched every corner of your skill and found the limits of its power, I think you’re the kind of person who’ll be disappointed the journey’s over rather than satisfied that you’ve completed it. But there will be more—other skills to explore or to expand the possibilities of your current one with. Always more. And better. It will be like that.”

For some reason, Alden was reminded of himself a few nights ago, looking at the mother bokabv and her calf and insisting they would have peaceful lives and never suffer from chaos. Like he had the authority to make that happen just by wanting it.

“Was it a long duel?” Stuart asked. “Would you have been injured if it were real?”

Alden blinked, resetting. “No, it was quick…don’t ask for all the details when I’m about to show it to you. It won’t be as fun.”

After Stu finished talking to Alden, the manuscript library was completely quiet. Everyone was upstairs. They would be having third meal outside tonight. Every available family member had already gathered because of the opportunity to wish his father well, and it was going to be a warm, clear evening.

It would probably turn into a party. The ens would come over to join them.

Stu stood and looked toward the shelves.

“Contract,” he said, “I want to research skills based on concepts of protection.”

His eyerings activated, showing him specks of purple-white light to indicate how many useful research materials could be found in every direction within the library. The names of experts he might want to contact also appeared. All of them would be happy to answer his questions.

“I’d rather just study what we have here.”

The list of names disappeared.

There were still an overwhelming number of options in this room alone. He should have expected it. Protection was at the core of many bindings. It was good that Alden liked that part of his skill because it gave Stu a broad starting place to search for something that would complement what he could already do.

But this is too broad.

“Have any of the skills mentioned in this library been adapted for humans already?”

“You haven’t received the proper education or earned the necessary permissions to access that information. However, if this will help you with your skill selection, a request can be sent to—”

“You know what it’s for,” Stu murmured. “Don’t send a request.”

It didn’t matter anyway. If a skill that approached perfection hadn’t been adapted, that didn’t mean one couldn’t be.

Something like what he already has perhaps, but better. Yes…I know how to begin.

“Show me everything related to skills that Jozz accessed in the last half year before he became a knight.”

Whisperer of Refuge had significant similarities to Alden’s skill. Jozz was thorough and picky. Whatever skills he’d wanted to study in the days before he made his final decision would be worth looking at.

And he had been rude about Alden, therefore it was right that his past efforts benefit Alden.

Most of the specks of light disappeared. Many of the remaining ones were concentrated on a single corridor between shelves.

“Would you like to know what order he accessed the manuscripts in?”

“Yes. Thank you, Mother.”

Stu whistled, and the panpi’i lamp lifted off from its perch and fluttered to his side. Together, they headed toward a bookshelf that had just begun to glow at the end of the corridor.

Daedalus

*OH BOY* That was quite the ending and new scene. I was a little worried about the retracted chapters and that we might get a lot of repeat and less-interesting chapters as they were redone, but *nope*

Bzzt

Movement on the Stu front!! I like this direction very much

Daedalus

Stu plotting to get Alden a Knight-quality skill once his current skill runs out is adorable, and I can’t wait to see his reaction once he learns The Truth.

Jazehiah

Thanks for the chapter! So, Stu is looking to get Alden a Knight Skill for when Alden's Skill inevitably caps out. Will he find Bearer of All Burdens? Who knows! I wonder what he'll think when he learns he didn't need to search.

ImNotHere

first win in the publication lottery! Thanks for the chapter

Thadd B

I just want to comment early. Is that so wrong?

Sean Carter

I like it! It's the last part that's new, right? It really works - I like the idea that Stu would solve one of Alden's problems (or at least a reasonable interpretation of them, based on what he knows) by designing him a skill.

Super Super Supportive Supporter

Oh wow, you reorganized so fast? Honestly I was expecting to wait like, one and a half weeks, nice job

Lystic

Chapter 258 is dead. Long live Chapter 258.

Erin M

HOLY SHIT WHAT A DELIGHT. I was so hopeful to get to see something like this from Stu in the rewrite!!! I am eagerly anticipating him finding Bearer (one day, sooner or later!) and maybe getting a History Lesson. And I’m happy to confirm that for me, at least, the rewrite is like getting a Special Edition behind the scenes of my favorite show :)

Alice YU

I like Alden’s taste regarding candles.

D Potto

Yay Stu's doing some digging! I love seeing Stu take the initiative and agency - this is a short but quite impactful chapter. Excited to see what else is coming!

Armo

Oh boy, there goes Stuart, slipping on that banana peel! While holding Checkov’s gun, too…

TheLunaticCo

I like this version more, although once more we missed out on stu ripping Winston apart...

BeepBoop

Oh my. Stu is doing some digging. It is good that he is because eventually Alden will probably work up to telling Stu about having an authority sense, but Stu wouldn't be able to get a true sense of Alden's position without knowing the skill, which Alden is limited in speaking about. If this setup allows for character and relationship development whilst also contributing to Stu actually being able to know what is happening with Alden fully that would be great.

Heather White

At first I was wondering if he’d find it. But given how adamant Mother’s been that him finding out would be too dangerous for Alden’s low intensity life, I don’t think she’ll guide him towards BoAB. I can even imagine her actively sabotaging his search.

BatheticBoy

Yeah that's the good stuff

Alice YU

This is beautiful 🥹

Thomas Todd

Ooooh, possibly it's time for Stu to catch on!

Heather White

This chapter’s phone call with Stu has a lot more life to it. Having him in an interesting, meaningful setting gave it a lot more depth. I enjoy it when you draw us into the world like that. The reason why he’s there also gave his words to Alden more weight. It made his declaration feel more powerful.

JennP

How is Alden going to handle turning down Stu's suggestions for skills when he can't explain that his own skill will never stop growing? ... maybe during his research Stu will find Bearer of All Burdens and recognize it as Alden's skill

ImNotHere

That make me think about Ro-den contract: Alden can not teach/talk about what he learned in Lesson One. But can he confirm that his skill is BoAB if somebody say to him "I know your skill and it is BoAB"?

PeasOfCrab

I predicted developments like this about a month ago when Stu was contemplating Alden’s lack of info/options and gave him the gift of a Klerm saved. What will prompt Alden to be open with Stu? Stu being such a caring, generous friend with both his time and attention. He’ll offer Alden knowledge and choices - meanwhile, Alden will feel major guilt when facing Stu’s openness and sincere best. And that guilt will scrape, scrape, scrape away at the protective covering of the Quiet Rabbit.

Sleyca

I wouldn't call myself reorganized just yet. Pulling this scene forward was the first thing I was sure needed to happen during my reread, but I still have a good bit I need to figure out about the next chapters.

Trin

I want that lamp.

ImNotHere

jealous of a bird shaped lamp that follows you...

March Parabola

Thank you for the chapter! I don't imagine Stu will figure out BoaB right away but I think he might get an inkling that something's suspicious.

Frozen

Stuart: I'm going to have this perfect protection skill adapted for humans for you! .... Alden: No Don't! ....Stuart: But why?..... And then a big reveal or frustrated noises at the contract tattoo. Or growing suspicion from Stu.

Daedalus

I know it’s unlikely to happen, due to mismatches in what characters know, say, and generally understand, but it would be fantastic to see how Klein might react to learning that Alden has a wizard buddy absolutely willing to help him get good skills, even ones that aren’t typically Rabbit-y, and make him begrudgingly admit that perhaps the Artonan connection did offset his concerns about Alden’s future potential.

Marcus Green

This chapter feels very right in a way the last few didn't.

Msharlo1

It is very Stu ish to be honest about his consultations.

zetorian

I mean, if Klein thought about it for more than his gut reaction biases, it wouldnt have been a stretch. Alden has a commendation for fighting chaos, from an obviously important artonan. The Contract is explicitly for making warriors against chaos. There is every reason to expect the artonans would make sure a commended individual who is willing to fight chaos wouldnt wash out for something as silly as lack of skill choice. Lexi had it right, the commendation absolutely should have been enough.

Aspiring Moth

Note that Stuart was already on his way to read the documents before the call happened. This is just like the time when he decided to take magical rings from the library to use in Alden's training after Alden was accepting and positive about his study journals. He appreciated Alden standing up for him to the point that he's decided to go do some skill research for him. Stuart has a habit of trying to return acceptance with favours

cafenacet

Huh is Stu gonna be the first to figure out he has a 300? It'll be funny if he figures it out before Esh does, even though Esh started way earlier.

funktorial

I really like this direction

Listerine

I think that while Stu is searching for ideal skills he'll stumble onto Bearer of All Burdens, even if just part of the symbolic/academic aspect of it being one of the very first, and figure out that Alden's skill is (very similar to) that. Which is great! Between his wizardry and his skill, the skill is the one he'd be more comfortable sharing with Stu if he could. That's already been brought up

zetorian

I mentioned it quite a few chapters ago during here-to-there. But Stu is, at this point, the artonan with the most experience with Alden's skill. And not by a small margin. I also think that as the primary's son and a declared, his access to knowledge about skills is going to be pretty much unrestricted. As we see here, even the restrictions he does have were straightforward to work around. Ro-den figured out Alden's skill with minimal investigation and some direct exposure to its workings. Stu doesn't have the experience to do that, but he absolutely has the determination and access to information to figure it out.

Neil

This is exactly what I was hoping for. Something that leads us in the direction of one of the many hanging pianos (in the form of various secrets and affixation events) falling.

Adam Woods

I definitely enjoyed the previous version of the chapter but the new one is the delight and I can see how it might help move towards the outlined plan.

Mag1cM

I like the chapter but I kinda miss the way the call with Stuart started in the old chapter. Alden being relieved about the quarrel not having come up and Stuart proving him wrong in the very first sentence was just really funny to me.

Jeff Petkau

I like this. Stu potentially on track to figure out BOAB feels like plot movement, although we had the same thing with Esh-erdi and that hasn't gone anywhere yet. Although I did like the line in the previous version where Alden thought "Oh good, he doesn't know about the argument" immediately followed by Stu saying "you quarreled with Emban".

Hallow

I love this chapter. I'm so excited to see what happens next, and I loved the somber yet hopeful tone the ending evoked. And I loved it even more reading through a second time where it evoked different feelings. Also, I so badly want Stu to encounter the Bearer of All Burdens in his research and to bring it up to Alden. I also suddenly hope that Stu notices that Alden is unable to talk about it, that would be so interesting to read, and it might lead to Stu finding more out about the Thegund things, which would also be fun.

zetorian

Assuming Alden's true skill becomes known, and Stu is able to arrange proper help for him. I'm _very_ interested what kind of tweaks are available for already affixed skills with the active cooperation of a skill designer. Obviously they can't change the base nature of it, but the original style skills are explicitly designed to be evolved over a lifetime, it seems logical to me that there would be ways to add or modify parts of it even after affixation. People change a lot over their life, people steeped in battle and loss more so than most. Could they design something like the de-fogging package Alden already has that allows him to have multiple entrusters? To have him be his own entruster? Small (relatively) things like that would be intensely and immediately helpful to Alden, and it seems like the kind of things that could be modified with active wizard / knight cooperation.

Arugula

I bet Stuart will stumble on Alden'skill! In your face, Joe! Muahahaha

Arugula

Omg, I hadn’t realized how bearer of all burdens could be read xD and in my country Bob is a type of sleight, so from now on I will forever read Alden's skill as Boab, lololol

zetorian

I think a joint mischievous Esh and very serious mode Stu research mission in the At'h archives that culminates in revealing Bearer would be super entertaining. Unlikely, but entertaining.

Hallow

It does also remind me of this bit. “Yes.” Esh-erdi set his empty mug on the armrest beside him. “I hope they’re mature enough to handle that sincerity. If not, they might rip away each other’s shade leaves without being prepared for all that can be known in harsh light.” I am somewhat worried for Alden and the potential for his secrets to be uncovered before he's ready, especially considering he's set his own deadline on deciding.

Casey

Love it!!!

ciopo

eveyr now and then I have a thought, then I forget it, then I remember it again. But THIS time I have the thought NOW while I can actually ask what I meant to ask! : While on Artona, can't Aiden ask Mother about Hannah? while Earth contract may not want to disclose anything about it, Mother is a whole different pair of trousers!

Partha Peddi

Is Stu researching complementary skills that will supplement Alden's BOAB? Why did he think that Alden will be disappointed at reaching the end of his skill?

Gregory

I think a) if that information was available then Hannah's mother would probably have had an opportunity to ask and b) Alden really does prefer to move forward. There's no reason for him to believe that he would learn anything good about it.

Gregory

He won't be able to talk about it even if Stu finds it out independently. And in that situation Stu will know exactly why, it's not like Alden has a ton of privacy contracts.

Gregory

He could say that he'll look at the new skill once he's reached the limits of his current one, and it would be technically true. Which is still lying in the most relevant way, but hey, that's the downside of Alden's path of deceit.

Gregory

It feels like there's another constraint here on top of "is this skill adapted for humans" - "is this skill available to Rabbits?" Now, I can't imagine that knights have any of the class constraints that Avowed do, but (barring shenanigans that Stuart can quite possibly pull off some day) Alden has a much, much shorter list of available skills than this library contains, even with the overstuffed (with red herrings?) Rabbit skill list.

KB

Stu!!!! What are you about to learn?!!?

Rae

I don't think Stu is concerned with that constraint because he believes he'll be able to overrule it in the same way he believes he can get a skill not currently adapted to humans to be adapted.

Tarry Higgins

I think people are missing that Skills are designed by Wizards, in fact from what Esh said in previous chapters, they are a grad student project. Stu might not be looking for an existing skill, but for ideas from which he could create a more suitable skill tree for Alden. He is at the point in his university career of designing his own skill (or modifying an existing one). Stu was horrified that Alden's spell impression was something Alden was not happy with. I remember Stu specifically said something about Alden should not chose one he wasn't delighted with.

Aspiring Moth

I think this will probably settle the debate of whether the original 300 avowed skills are different to the knight skills, or are just adapted knight skills (as in adding accessibility features for people without authority senses, and modifying them to suit other species). it's looking increasingly likely that the original 300 skills will actually just be adapted knight skills, but we'll find out soon enough

Jeff Gault

Not a cliffhanger, in the traditional sense. But, instead, ending on the first pebble beginning to make its way down a steep, rocky hillside.

Sloth

Good soup!

J Reynolds

If I had to guess, I'd say that Joe was 95% to figuring out Alden's skill on his own. Then he simply asked Alden what his skill was. Alden said it was LMTYL, which confirmed it was BOAB. (I say 95% because there are probably tens of thousands of B rank rabbit skills for earthlings, and Joe said he was afraid some foe of his was setting him up for something. So caution would have been his watchword.)

puppy0cam

it could also be the other way round. Maybe the skill was adapted from an avowed skill to a knight skill.

Tarry Higgins

I think it's worth re-reading Lesson One, chapter 39 to see what Alden can and cannot say. https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/63759/super-supportive/chapter/1228338/thirty-nine-lesson-one Joe's triangle of secrecy for this lesson is pretty wide coverage. "And I would like you to confirm specifically that you will not, through any means or by any permutation of interpretation, intentionally reveal the information I’m about to disclose to you with anyone else of any species without my permission. Ever." Alden can't tell someone that his skill is called Bearer of All Burdens, because that would let them know it was skill 112 of the original 300, and that fact is covered under his non-disclosure. Depending on how twisty his thought in this matter have been, and Alden is pretty thoughtful, even telling an Artonan wizard/knight that his skill is called "Let me carry your luggage" might be too much. That Artonan hearing the English words may well have it translated back to Artonan by System unless they spoke good English - and that's the name of the skill and that's protected information. I don't recall Alden telling Stuart his skills name, or any other Artonan, so I think Alden has already gone that far down the thought path I outlined. Alden describes what his skill can do. Secrecy contracts are a well known thing and Alden is tattooed with one. Asking questions that cannot be answered is how experienced Artonan investigators can get around it with a willing witness. Secrecy contracts are probably very difficult to break, probably powered by your Authority. Someone breaking your secrecy contract would break your Authority, that's how I would design such a thing.

PeasOfCrab

This vibes really well, serving as a sort of transition/capstone of Stu and Alden's Welcome End to then move towards the Christmas arc in subsequent chapters. It creates anticipation of what Stu's going to be up to while he's off-screen. I'm so, so very excited for the release of 259 and Sleyca clearing the hurdle of the new and improved Christmas structure. Let the Soup flow!!

Max Dudley

Ohhhh this one does feel better than the previous version. Im happy to see you took the time and you're much more satisfied with the outcome!

Harimeow

I'm SO excited about Stu's research into "skills for Alden". I'm only surprised he hasn't done this before now, since he's an amazing friend, but he has been busy supporting Emban and with school.

Elo2Coon

Great chapter. There’s many thing that can happen that I see for now. One: Stu learn about bearer of all burden and can or can’t confirm that it’s Alden skill. Two: But by the look of the warning, he doesn’t have the accreditation to see all of what it truly is. Plus, we know Joes isn’t your typical wizard… I mean, what is a typical wizard really? Three: Stu concoct a new skill or path for Alden Fourth: By this experience, he discover that Alden isn’t fond of the new skill but he’s nonetheless really interested by the spell from which it is derived from.

Harimeow

Thinking on it a bit more: Stu's reaction if he finds out about Alden's skill will hopefully tell Alden something of what he needs to know to judge how Stu would react to the knowledge that he has an authority sense. Will Stu prioritise the fact that Alden will make great support for a Knight, or Alden's own choices?

Not_You

Ooh! What a fun development that makes so much sense! Can’t wait for more of that to play out

Karim Saadi

The planets teleportation budget just decreased by 2% because it was used up by Mother having to find the self control not to highlight another book for Stu

Lyssur

Even if lengthwise it is shorter than some other chapters, it feels longer because it feels there is movement on Stu figuring out Alden has BoaB. I really like this angle- even if Stu doesn't figure out what skill Alden has- and he doesn't seem very focused on that- the fact that Stu is looking into possible protection skills for Alden might make him likely to stumble over something. It also places more pressure on Alden, as such a thoughtful gesture- again time and effort spent to help him instead of Stu- and he's not sharing? And what an image! The art'hs having a happy family dinner, and Stu alone in the manuscript library studying for Alden's benefit. Poor Stu. He's more vindictive than I thought he was, with the whole- 'Jozz's research is a good starting point since he insulted Alden, so helping him is only fitting'. And Mother at the end, offering him the order of access for the manuscript... hmm. Thanks for sharing, and really liking this new path!

ImNotHere

Each time I reread this chapter, I always react to the way Stu talk to the system. For me it explains how Mother presented herself ch59 [...You’re the Artona I System?” “Sometimes. A part of it,” she said. “The kernel.”] There are automated part of the system and a more sentient part [“Contract,” he said, “I want to research skills based on concepts of protection.” ] vs [“Yes. Thank you, Mother.” ] Stu knows this and can make the difference. I think it's also the first interaction between Mother and Stu that we witness

Msharlo1

Sort of but not exactly, the secrecy contracts are based on the authority of those involved as well as potential third party interference. We see two examples of this 1. When Joe and Alden make the contract Joe explains that trying to break the contract would instigate an authority conflict between Alden and Joe, which Joe states (with reasonable accuracy at the time) would result in Alden (new, generic, B-ranked Rabbit) being crushed by Joe's (powerful wizard) authority. Then in later chapters we have the example of Joe and the senator's wife, where Joe used his authority to supersede the senator's, allowing his wife to act unfaithfully. So, the Arths or possibly even Esh could break or bend the contract if they wanted, as could any wizard more powerful than Joe, or even Alden himself if he grows enough. There are also several terms in the contract that could be exploited like "species". For instance, is the contract a living entity? Does it have a species? Does Gogan, given that his people are extinct? Would a new, singular intelient being/entity with no kin have a species? "Permission" is also a wide open term and while I wouldn't say Joe has given it as of yet, there are all kinds of sneaky ways to get it (ever read the back of a ski-lift ticket?) similar to how Alden got entrusted in the entrance exams. Finally we have the clause Joe made at the end of sharing that it was him that taught Alden with the Primary and more open language.

Topher

I always find Mother conversations interesting narratively. We are seeing only the very surface of the interaction, but there is so much going on underneath when writing a near omniscient character. We are guessing at motivations from the barest hints, but on the other hand the author has this massive conception of the character's motivations and structures that they can only show through the smallest of windows

Bob Smith

"Oh, wow, this would be perfect for him. It's a shame I don't have authorization to tell him about it. Maybe in a few years..."

James Walsh

What a lovely chapter!

Calibri

Stu is such a sweetheart

Joey T.

I will be disappointed if Stu doesn't come across BoAB in his search. Not sure if it would be on Jozz's list, though. Plus, Stu's just looking for complimentary skills. If Stu discovers Alden's skill name on his own, Alden will be relieved, I think. He's wanted to tell him before.

Joey T.

It would be funnier if Stu discovers Alden's uncapped BOAB skill & tells Alden not to pick a second skill. I doubt he'd tell him to avoid affixing until the last minute, like one Very Bad Wizard did. But he might be tempted to break bad for Alden.

Eitan G.

I agree. It was a short chapter, but this felt like movement.

Buddych001

I really hope this rewrite is building up to Alden revealing at least one of his secrets to Stu

Joey T.

*** Spoiler Alert *** (If you didn't read the prior version of this chapter.) I am eagerly awaiting the Lute bathtub scene's return. There was a moment where Lute reminded Alden that he could entertain Alden's opposite if Alden plans to go a long time without casting chains. Maybe in the revised chapter Alden will think about his upcoming affixation and at least make plans to tell Lute about his wizardness. They could schedule another trip to the soundproofed train car. Lute's his closest friend on the island, and Alden told him first about the commendation. So it would make sense to tell Lute if he's getting close to telling an Artonan declared.

J Reynolds

I've thought for a while that the roommates will be brought into the secret if Alden chooses to affix and stay in Anesidora. And that a secrecy room will be involved. Perhaps with tattooing. Lexi will love it.

Joey T.

It definitely fits Sleyca's intended focus on power for these chapters: --Alden's working hard to exhaust/grow his free authority, instead of worrying about how the scale is tipping towards affixation. --Alden thinks about how doing magic makes him feel like he's in control of the universe. --Alden's excited about burdering Heelfeather. --Alden decides to skip to the end of his spell book to learn something more powerful as a self reward. --Stu points out that Alden will never want to stop expanding his powers. --Stu starts researching to help Alden grow his skills, foreshadowing a more intense conversation about Alden's power.

Robert Mullins

This whole journey of Stu trying to find an appropriate skill for Alden must be hilarious from Mother's point of view.

Jack Slash

This is an interesting direction, love seeing more Stu!

Kios

Stu knows Alden well enough that he's totally going to find BoAB and suggest it to Alden and it's going to make a wonderful discussion that should point out that Alden was paid in information and I'm very excited for this.

KB

I was trying to remember if this was the first time Stu used "Mother" as direct address. It does seem significant that he uses it now.

Joey T.

If he finds BoAB, he should instantly recognize it as Alden's skill. Stu's outrage when he finds out about the tattoo will be glorious. A wizard who took advantage of an avowed also tattooed him against discussing his own skill! (And Stu won't know for sure what Alden got in return, because Alden can't tell him.) Knights introduce themselves by their skill names, because their Self is bound to them. Even if Stu doesn't know Alden's a wizard, he'll be offended by the tattoo. When Stu eventually learns that secret, he'll be incensed. Joe's getting a visit.

Sesharan

Stuart researching a skill for Alden is fascinating to me, for one very specific reason: as things stand, even if Alden got himself to the point where he could tell Stuart about his wizardry, he still could not tell him about the nature of his skill. That information is locked behind his contract with Joe. And as much as we readers love to believe that Alden could find an easy loophole, realistically that’s not the case. Stu’s focus on Alden’s skill brings that into focus and reminds us that even if Alden entrusts him with everything he can, there will still be a barrier between them that needs to be overcome.

Vega

I can sense it! Alden is close to cracking, I can feel it in my bones! Votary Stuart’s for Alden!

Ian T Hathaway

Oh. Oooh fuck. Okay, I held off commenting on the redactions until I could see what exactly you were going to replace them with. I had faith even in my disappointment, and you still surpassed it. So excited to see what the future holds(again ;) ). Great chapter as always, Sleyca

Phlinn

I'm amazed Alden hasn't tried using the system as his entruster, unless he did so off screen. Although if it did work it might have the authority to entrust any avowed to him since it sort of owns them. I forsee Alden bearing the burden of haecity for groups of avowed in the future.

Leonhard R.

Thank you for the chapter, i enjoyed it very much! (Wish it would be possible to send you an anonymous hot chocolate for your amazing work. Allways love reading it! *PS: Please don't drink the random refreshments from your doorsteps, i'm dreading to receive a note that there has been some unforseen food poisoning. Even if the hot chocolately has the perfect temperature and melted marshmallows on top, ESPECIALLY in that case! ...If in doubt, ask 'what would stu do?' and i think you should be fine. Most of the times.)

The Icarus Collective

Given that Jozz has done this research before selecting his own skill, that positions him as someone who might actually recognize Alden's skill as being Bearer of All Burdens. Could be intriguing if he stumbles across that info before Stu does. Wonder what would happen?

YellHeah

loving this new direction for the chapter to end on 👀

C. Adkins

Justice of Votary Kibby! Wait, can Alden have TWO votaries on his lonesome?

PatienceHoney

I totally agree. I have seen the loophole comments and felt like those were just wishes and not probable. After reading this chapter, I had what is probably a similar wish with Stuart asking Alden particulars about his skill thay rubbed up against the Roden contract and all Alden says is, "I hate Worli Roden!" in oder to indicate to Stu that he is on the right track... but that may not even be possible given how tightly the gremlin holds both the terms and spirit of the contract.

Aidan Gorman

Thanks for the update and chapter, can never complain about an author caring about their craft

abowden

I've been waiting for this moment forever, it's going to be hilarious if he hits Alden up with "Hey, I've got this great skill to recommend you, it's a lot like yours but way better, it's designed for avowed but even knights would consider it, We call it bearer of all bur-" (yes I know he'd instantly realize that was Alden's skill lol, let me dream!)

puppy0cam

> “You haven’t received the proper education or earned the necessary permissions to access that information. However, if this will help you with your skill selection, a request can be sent to—” > “You know what it’s for,” Stu murmured. “Don’t send a request.” > It didn’t matter anyway. If a skill that approached perfection hadn’t been adapted, that didn’t mean one couldn’t be. > “Show me everything related to skills that Jozz accessed in the last half year before he became a knight.” > Most of the specks of light disappeared. Many of the remaining ones were concentrated on a single corridor between shelves. > “Would you like to know what order he accessed the manuscripts in?” > “Yes. Thank you, Mother.”  Mother deliberately annoyed Stu here with how she phrased her refusal of his query. But why?

Gojisoar

Oh? (゚з゚)

abowden

Multi entruster MIGHT be possible, but self entrustment? I'm betting that goes way too far against the base nature of the skill. The closest he'll probably ever get is a piece of tech that has authority and can entrust, like the post drop, or more likely, he'll break himself with Stu and get mentally entrusted things the second he needs them.

Travis M

Well, knowing more about alden's skill could be argued as helping him with his skill selection, in the same way that knowing about a fellow knight's skill they plan to group up with would help. But he doesn't know that...I wonder if it's a subtle bending of rules by responding as it would if he did know that alden had an uncapped skill.

Terrestrial_Biped

You'll be fine... unless there's a killer fish and your classmates will only think you're cool if you step in the water with it.

Topher

This is a chapter that approaches perfection

Terrestrial_Biped

It's entirely possible she offered chronological order because she thinks that will help Stu figure it out, lol.

Terrestrial_Biped

*Some* skills, some *Avowed* skills, are student graduation projects. Not all, and few to no student projects would rise to a quality level that a knight would consider them. And Stu is not at the point where he could design or modify a skill himself. He is in his first year at an eight-year university. For his own future skill, he requested mature experts to make modifications; he did not do the work himself.

Martin Banks

Yusssss, I like this bit where Stu goes digging its surprising he hasn't already given the training they were doing and Stu's disposition as a huge overachiever. Awesome chapter can't wait to see how the flow changes 😁

‘The first arrow falls short. The last pierces the sun’ (emban ch.212)

Leonhard R.

Random thought, i was wondering if we one day might see a knight or avowed-skill, that focuses on language (communication). That helps with understanding the main ideas/concepts that are communicated by someone over language, and how this communication could be improved to be "easely understood" by a certain audience. I could imagine it to be useful... (.... even as a superhero job, e.g. i could imagine a S-rank hostage negotiator might be quite usefull in all sort of conflict situations...) Some Sway-skills might also be going in this direction, but i still think there are a broad range of use cases, where the use of text or speech as a medium is more practical/acceptable/usefull then having a sway directly work on ones mind.

Scarlett O'Hare

Stu appearing to comfort Alden by saying there will be more skills seems so jarring. The conversation is Stu saying Alden knows him, but then quickly shifts in such a way that... Stu doesn't know Alden. Why does Stu think Alden needs to be comforted in this way? I must have missed it... Not only does this seem to pause Alden but I think of how Alden has reacted before when people try to tell him that his current skill is not enough. I get that the people saying it don't know what Alden knows about the 'lifetime growth potential' of his skill. It's just in all the recent cases it seems to be coming from people with condescending points of view about Rabbits just have servant skills, Alden being lucky to have found this one, and the unlikelihood he'll find another. Though in this specific case of Stu, I can't think of a case where Alden represented that he was worried about finding a cap to his current skill or worry that he would not be able to find another useful skill. Which, to me, makes it feel like this conversation came out of the blue. *edited to clarify my comment and to resolve typos...

Terrestrial_Biped

Stu's not wrong, though. Back when Joe told Alden not to take another skill or spell, Alden kind of panicked. And part of the reason he panicked was that at the time, he saw his skill as simple. He could do one thing; he could protect an item he held. That was it. When Alden finally met Mother, though, she comforted him his skill was one of the most flexible ever made. And then she showed him the many facets he can add to the skill, when he saw he truly could discover completely magical new things about his skill for a lifetime, he was finally all in on the One Skill For Life program. Alden hasn't had these particular issues since he and Stu got to know each other, which makes it surprising and insightful of Stu to have picked up on this. But Stu can, at least, see that Alden is kind of a workaholic, a guy who wouldn't know what to do with himself if true leisure was inflicted on him. Stu can see that Alden loves magic; Alden loves discovering new things about his skill. He sees how Alden is working to replicate one-off insights and turn them into reliable tools. He can see the restlessness at Alden's core, his unwillingness to be satisfied and to cease striving. Stu's wrong about Alden needing to be comforted in this manner now, but he's right about that particular blessing being close to Alden's heart.

J Reynolds

In Chapter 246, Rel says that his skill is communication-based: “You’ve asked me a question that’s best answered by yourself,” Rel-art’h said after a moment. “I have killed few demons. My skill is for communication and assisting others. I have felt empathy for the things I’ve killed. Others who kill more sometimes protect themselves by feeling less. I understand them, too.”

ppbrro

With what gorgon said about avowed being property im expecting the system to entrust an unwilling avowed sometime in the far future

ppbrro

Since Stu is searching avowed skills in a library meant for knights research Im getting the feeling that all skills derive from the og ones, one way or another

Just when I wrote on the last chapter that I'll take a break from SS, a new chapter comes along in the direction that makes me want for more. The revision was really a good idea!

Shawn

Agreed but the investigative route that Stu is taking here is covered by the secrecy contract in Lesson One so it's still a long long road until Alden can discuss his skill. I'm low-key worried that he'll feel enough guilt that he will make a second deal with Ro-den and it will be worse than the first one.

Joey T.

Relevant to a lot of comments: Ch. 60: Mother, Pt 2 [THE BEARER OF ALL BURDENS] [You may bear that which has been entrusted to you by the one you choose to serve. You will preserve that which you have mind, strength, and will to bear. You may not lay your burden down.] “This is your skill. Along with a better translation of what it was intended to be at its heart,” she said. “You have questions.” /end quote A lot of readers have questioned whether Alden can target the system as his entruster. If he takes the knight's oath, Mother would be "the one you choose to serve," yes? She did say in the prior chapter, though, that BoAB's not intended for solo combat: “Avowed skill number one hundred and twelve,” she said. “Designed at a time when the Knights were fewer and weaker, and many believed they would not be able to push back the chaos without help. Potentially powerful, of course. But not intended for solo combat.

Aspiring Moth

the knights oath is to serve the interests of the artonan species, not the contract/mother. the contract is a tool created by the artonans, and mother is a personalised face for it. accepting a contract has nothing to do with the entrustment component of his skill Alden was able to target Leo the post drop in anesidora, so targeting non living intelligent beings is possible, but Mother doesn't really have a physical location to target. for targeting her to work, he would have to learn how to target non physical things

I figure some people will need to drop their subscription so I upped mine to support you writing the story the way that feels right rather than the fastest way.

J Reynolds

I was just glancing through the chapter where Alden mentioned to the roomies: “Apparently there’s like a whole process for it to make sure [an Avowed takeover of earth] happens peacefully. But we probably won’t live to see it unless Earth gets a bunch more hyperboles with grand ambitions or we start making superbabies a lot faster, so don’t get too excited about world domination.” [Ch. 104] In Terrestrial Biped's excellent timeline, it's listed as "2300-2700: Earth’s Avowed achieve world domination? [Ch 70]" So at a wild guess, take the mean of those two values. Who expects to still be alive in 2500 or so? Even in a world where rejuvenation is possible, that's a pretty big ask. When we also know that rejuvenation has limits. Who could hope to be as durable and difficult-to-change as you'd need to be to live so long? Haoyu, his parents, and whoever else goes for a Dura Brute build, that's who. Once again in Ch. 104: “My parents say it’s better to think of Formation as ‘resistance to unwanted bodily deformation.’” Crank your Formation high, reject the notion that aging is just something that is inevitable, and maybe you can make it to your fifth century or farther without seeing a Healer of Body once. Food for thought, anyway.

Ch. 131 "Ripples II", Esh's thoughts on Jianwei Zhang-Demir: His path was simple. Strong. And he was proud of being those things, Esh imagined. Or selfishly hoped. It was a path that would protect the one who walked it as he followed it so that he lived long enough to see it widen before him. Now that is truly a hope.

nityaana

random question, do you guys think alden will learn how to do contracts when he gets the matadero tattoo? or will he eventually accept his fate, get the sexy hazmat suit (ch:25) and become a tattooist's assistant so he can ask direct questions without sounding suspicious?

Goodie

Sounds to me that BOAB was designed to be ‘the help’ for a knight during combat. So I wonder if it was designed to assist any knight who calls, or to complement and partner a particular knight (like esvulgivnas) to ensure their survival? Chances are Stu will discover the uncapped 300 avowed skills at some point, and if BOAB pairs best with a particular knight’s skill then there are some interesting implications.

Goodie

Alden wishes to learn a summoning spell… Stu whistles to summon the lamp.

Schuh

Esvulgivnas didn't exist when BOAB was made. It was also mentioned that things were desperate and knights were weaker back then. These days single knights are so strong that support skills are less popular. I think Alden could help maintain narrow paths Stuart creates. Stuart finding out about BOAB is also important. Otherwise he would get really depressed if Alden tells him he has the drawbacks of being a knight without having a knight skill.

Lute's bathroom extravaganza - He only found out the water heater was broken after the preparation of everything else so he's just sitting in an empty bathtub eating a bowl of 2 minute noodles, pretending to read a book he stole from Alden's room, surrounded by roses, and scented candles of many varieties. And there's a rubber duck in the toilet to make up for the lack of bathwater. Stuart slips on a banana peel right when he's about to pull off the shelf a book containing information about Alden's skill. Lexi discovers that Writher has been sentient this whole time! Leo the post drop box gets a bomb put inside him by someone trying to blow up the TC. Desperate toilet flushing ensues to get people's attention. Kon rips a mad fart and everyone in the room passes out as a result. Lexi discovers Writher has a 'tail' mode that attaches the handle to his lower back to be a super dangerous tail. Also it has no off button so its just stuck on him forever. Zeridee hears that her sibling is coming to matadero and asks Alden to take her to mainland so she can go into hiding. Esh-erdi introduces Alden to someone of another species who has BOAB as their skill. The gloss manifests itself upon someone randomly so that us readers can keep blaming it for everything that happens in this story.

J Reynolds

Worst case scenario: he could always ask Mother for another textbook on how to form contract tattoos. No idea of how many spells are in Whan-tel's Art, but when he's mastered all of them, I'm sure she'll give him another book. Unless contracting is just too advanced for him.

Jazehiah

BoAB is described as "Avowed Skill 112," not "Hntyon Skill 112." I wonder if, at time of creation, there was a significant difference between the two. Did Knights only have access to 300 skills, or did they have a more expansive list? Were the original avowed designed to support knights, or to replace them? If their role was to support, other 300 skills might have similar "working together" requirements. If Knights could/would choose from any uncapped skill, then this whole line of speculation can be ignored. The fact that Stu is looking at skills that protect suggests to me that (at least in modern day) Knights can just choose any uncapped skill they are convinced will suit them well.

ImNotHere

ch59 [Designed at a time when the Knights were fewer and weaker, and many believed they would not be able to push back the chaos without help] I think that if the 300 are not an adaptation of a hn'tyon skills it is at least based on one The 300 are (for me) a selection of hn'tyon skills that are the most useful for support

PeasOfCrab

230. Here-To-There X “It bothers me a little. That I can’t do anything with my skill when I’m alone.” Stuart studied his face. Alden wondered what he saw. “That is a difficult limitation,” Stuart said finally. Simply. It made Alden glad he’d told him. “It is,” he agreed. But Ryada’s difficulty was fresh on his mind, giving him perspective. “You like protecting things and people with your magic, don’t you?” Stuart asked. “I do.”

denatured

It seems that Avowed skills and Knight skills have something in common after all. If Stu is hoping to learn about Alden's skill by checking what Jozz researched, that must mean at least the core of the skills can be used in either capacity. The Knights have the ability to redesign and customize, and to understand the full use of their skill. And they would obviously choose an uncapped skill. At least to begin with. So... there could be a Knight skill out there just like Alden's?

Traytray

Wizards and knights live very long lives right? Is it in the hundreds or thousands of years? Anyone wonder if the skill creator of Bearer of All Burdens is still alive? Maybe Alden will meet them one day.

puppy0cam

I highly doubt there's any artonans that are thousands of years old. Or at least, none that are still recognizably artonan.

Aspiring Moth

I wonder what Rel-art'h's reaction was to hearing about what Alden said to Emban. From the recent bokabv chapter we know that he was sympathetic to that point of view already, but only thought that it was a situation that kind lies wouldn't fix (as in Stuart needed to find a way to fix his confidence himself). I can see Rel scolding Emban even. the twins seemed to think that she was being very harsh, and likely taking her anger about Ryada out on Alden

Maria Agnesi

I feel it is likely that Stu is searching for a new Skill for Alden (As he is probably assuming Aldens current skill is a 'normal' one that will get stuck after a few levels) “When you’ve searched every corner of your skill and found the limits of its power, I think you’re the kind of person who’ll be disappointed the journey’s over rather than satisfied that you’ve completed it. But there will be more—other skills to explore or to expand the possibilities of your current one with. Always more. And better. It will be like that.” Though I just realize that does not really change your core point at all - doesn't matter if stu is searching Aldens current skill or future one, he is still searching skills considered by Jozz. Only difference could be about the implication about how common Knight/Avowed skills use the same 'base'.

Loser Me

Unrelated to the chapter, but just so glad my payment method problem is all sorted out and now I'm back~ Woo-hoo! On that note, did not know VAT was being applied to my payments now lmao. I just thought the Philippine peso suffered again since September and led to Patreon charging more lol

things like this have been popping up recently. it wasn't that long ago that apple wanted a cut of patreon subscriptions, causing them to raise the price for the apple app only. I guess your government just pushed some law through with a similar effect

Loser Me

Wait omggg, is Stuart going to find out about Alden on his own? Not immediately of course, but wonder if him trying to find a skill for Alden is going to end up with him figuring out that he got a Knight skill-

Wheels42

Thank you for a story that explores the characters so much. Some books I read for a power fantasy, others like this one I read because it helps explore and process my own thoughts, feelings, and emotions. You craft a wonderful world but truly real charactes, and I for one think taking your time to get the next few chapters to be where you want them to be is worth it.

Francis

Love the rewrite! The POV change makes things feel like they are speeding up

Francis

Stu looking for a skill is so interesting! So many questions in my mind. Would Mother try and "help" a little bit to get Stu to discover BoaB? Is BoaB there in the first place (probably, otherwise why would Sleyca write this scene). If there is a knight version of BoaB, has anyone ever chosen it? Maybe not, because a Knight's skill influences their personality to some extent and maybe no one is crazy enough to pick something that literally says you are willing to shoulder all types of pain in the universe. If my previous point is correct, then Stu would freak out when he learns that Alden has this. What would Stu do? Joe thought it was a dangerous secret to have, so how would Artonans react to hearing someone has a 300?

Francis

Also, to add to my point about BoaB being for crazy people - just look at the name of the protection based skill Jozz chose - Whisperer of Refuge. The constrast to Bearer of all Burdens is so perfect and stark, I think it speaks volumes

Terrestrial_Biped

Tiny detail I noticed on re-read. When the Contract highlights books for Stu, it uses specks of "purple-white light" - same color as Stu's auriad. His favorite color, the hair color of his father and his lost sister.

JJ Hunter

I am so curious whether Stu knows about the original 300 Avowed skills or not - is this a part of his education still pending? will any of this research into similar hn'tyon skills help him discover Bearer or some similar knight skill? In some ways, I suspect Stu will have an advantage over Esh in not being able to start his research based on what skills have already been adapted for humans. Stu has a lot more exposure to Alden using Bearer, and is working from his own observations and Alden's shared insights first, with Contract-assisted research second. Stu has more time (and I suspect more motivation) than Esh does, and researching from the angle of protection-focused knight skills that could be adapted and would be complimentary to Alden's current skill is more likely to get him in the right territory than researching from the angle of preservation-focused skills adapted for humans, I suspect.

JJ Hunter

Curious to see what fruits may come of Stu's quest here, even as I'm wincing a bit that Stu has decided to distract himself with this good-feeling quest on Alden's behalf that Alden didn't ask for and doesn't actually need. This will turn the knife of secrets even more bitingly painful when Alden learns how much time and effort Stu has already invested in trying to Be The Best Possible Friend in helping him with prospects beyond the anticipated cap on his current skill...

zombie

Much like Kibby's favorite color is the color of Alden's auriad which is why their auriads match!
